My thoughts about L2:
It's the best community enriching, policital, clan vs. clan, alliance vs alliance game I have ever experienced and am still experiencing. The reason why WoW cannot achieve this is because the sides have been already chosen by the gaming company simple, this is something only long time L2 players who have fully experienced the community of L2 can understand. The closest thing I've experienced community-wise to L2 was SWG. Although there are 2 sides, rebel vs. empire, people in that game has a choice to switch sides, you aren't forced to choose from the login screen HORDE or ALLIANCE. Because of these reasons of trust, backstabs, friendships, betrayal etc. etc. L2 clans seem very tight knit and "family like".
Many many people I see here bash this game because they have not fully experienced the community of L2 whether they have not played enough nor was in a clan that wasn't politically oriented/laid back. I have always believed the community is more important in an mmorpg than any other factor. L2 gives the best environment for an open community with so many factors that there are ALWAYS rises and falls of great alliances, clans, famous characters etc. (yes famous characters, L2's game style allows for infamous/famous characters where people will actually know your name because of your deeds like: pvp skills, building a clan, betrayal, uniting clans, forming alliances, etc) play L2 for the community, and play single player games for content.
EACH SERVER has it's own HISTORY of rise and fall of powers, famous clans, players, etc. In L2, when a famous player quits the game, you are greatly missed not only within yoru clan but even your enemies. Who can tell me the history of a server in WoW?
L2 has free updates called "Chronicles" which changes and opens alot more options in an "already" open community. There have been events where some of the top clans in each server were pited against each other in a Battle Royal in an arena colliseum.
Many say that alot of people have quit, however many have returned because they realize that they can't get the community that L2 has anywhere else. Many people have said ESPECIALLY L2 veterans that WoW feels like "a single player rpg with alot of online players." This would be totally wrong in the minds of WoW fanatics however it's something only L2 veterans can understand. Taste the community peoples it's sweet. The beginning is going to be very hard and dull but once you're infused into the L2 community, you will realize all the things I've said.
Lastly, BOTS... there are many but seriously you don't understand how many get banned also. The BAN HAMMER is out there, I have talked to bot runners and someone had about 70 accounts banned since release. However there are STILL many BOTS. Now we have to think of "why are there still so many bots?". One thing, DEMAND. The gaming community environment in L2 is VEEEEERY intense and DEMANDING. It is SO war-like that people will do ANYTHING to get their hands on adena, lvled characters which equals === BOTS+++ (people do whatever it takes in war). IF the game sucked and there wasn't as much demand, why would there be so many BOTS????? why would farmers even bot in the world of L2? DEMAND+++
Oh and using VENT/TS is VERY real in L2 because of the fast paced pvp. which also adds to the community +++. If you've been switching mmorpgs every few months and feel that it's all the same, try the community of Lineage2, it's here to stay. I've given up trying to quit myself :P there's nothing out there yet that offers this kind of community. There is no level cap or ENDing in community. One reason Lineage2 was less sucessful than WoW in the USA is because Lineage2 offered an unrestricted and uninstructional approach to the game while WoW offered a more "do this, do that" approach and gave people instructions and direction (which many label the instructions aka Quests and suger coat it as "content"). I mean look at the freakin SCHOOL SYSTEM in the USA, we're so used to direction and instructions that without them, we just sit there and complain that there's no "tasks" to perform. It's a game make your own goals don't be so controlled.
Join the history, the fight, the grind, be a server legend, create history, pain, savour the victories, control territories. Keep going until you realize what I've said here, and you'll thank me, or hate me for introducing you to such an addicting community enriching game.
Here's a video of a pretty good example of the community in L2 that I found. (castle siege of aden on Lionna server of an alliance called Invincible)
note: I could have talked about another game besides WoW but I think WoW was a good standard to use in comparing the two games.

Sounds very interesting,I will probobly check it out.
Thanks.
L2
Is GANK PK bonanza
If you like community that people will first group with you, than when they are bored of grouping..just PK you
Than L2 is the game for you

When I was playing WoW I wished a lot of times to PK characters of my same faction that were annoying, badmouthing, uncool... I couldn't do it myself and it frustated me so much that I left the game. Then I discovered L2. I think L2 offers a lot of freedom of action. Not even UO (in its present state) or EVE (except in 0.0 space) come close to L2 in PvP freedom.
I like the karma system and XP loss very much. It changes completely the way people play, and makes them think twice about their actions. Of course, if you're a newbe and someone PKs you then nobody cares, but the thing changes when other clans and known people are involved which is what matters.
For endgames, I think EVE with its POSs and conquered space, and L2 with its thousand-plus-people castle sieges and massive open field raids come together very close. But this would be futile without freedom of action, not only personaly, but also between clans in the form of alliances, wars and drama
To be honest, I preffer L2 since if you lose one castle you can fight for it later without that much of a loss. But in EVE losses get more critial, you can build a POS and if you lose it, well, it doesn't remain there for you to conquer next week }:-)
Unfortunately for the more hardcore kind, massive wars in EVE are just a lag fest -which is really the MAIN problem with EVE gameplay, that they cannot deliver what they promise-, while in L2 those thousand people fights are actually playable.
While they are far from perfect, both games share in common that, the more you play, the more interesting it gets.
Pretty good description.
Unfortunately you are wasting your breath here, you can tell by the replies. Some of them think that its a "ganking" game. Nonplayers and Korean game haters, whatcha gonna do with them? If they had a clue, they would know.
Most of them don't even understand what the game is about or how it even works lol. They are happy doing there cute little kill task and playing capture the flag for points.
I had a lot of interest in this game, however, when I did a search using Yahoo the main site did not show up on the first page. What did show up was all the sites that sell money, items, etc.
I see some people use the fact that all the bots show how popular the game is. While that may be true, it is a game killer for me.
Why would I want to play a "GAME" where players don't want to play a game but buy their "stuff" with RL money.
I know this occurs in other games but it seems to be epidemic in Lineage 2.
Sorry I am not going to play a game where I have to wait for a player named ofjfhl to finish with a mob before I can do a quest.
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.

Playing: Final Fantasy Online: ARR, Destiny
Most memorable games for me: UO, GW1, LoTRO
I wouldnt put to much into what Torak says.....this guy one day says he's done,I'll never post in the Lin2 forums again and the game is full of bots ( his words ), lol next day he is back. People don't need to understand a game to know what its about ( Thats why we have these forums ) but they do understand when a game is completly out of control with absolute corruption.
I'll agree with some of whats been said ( as I gotta keep it real from both sides of the fence, unlike one or 2 others here ) Community is good, graphics are good and thats where it ends for me. Being one sided about anything will hold no credibility
Waiting on Guild Wars 2

I fully agree with the OP, i've been playing Lineage II for about a year, almost quit twice, but always came back after just a few days !!!
And yes, the community is what made me wanna quit those 2 times, but that's also what made me come back once i found a great RP Clan (on the Lionna server) !
It is indeed a harsh game, because it's the most realistic RP game out there, you can kill whoever you want whenever you want, you can steal people's belongings if they drop them on the ground, there's no stupid rule like "ok i wanna kill you (for whatever reason), but some supreme unknown force makes it impossible for me to do it here, can you please move to an area where i can kill you ?"
But the thing is, if you do kill someone, you gotta be prepared to face the consequences, just like in real life. Only here in L2, you wont go to jail, you'll be killed on sight by the guy's whole Clan !
And if you get killed in L2, you will lose a lot of XP, sometimes entire days of playing, so yes, you'll think twice about it.
Now, about the bots, that's due to the economy system. Everything is so damn expensive to get, and the shops are so stupidly hard to search, that's really (imo) the weakest point of the game. Just implement a SWG-like economy system, and you'll get the absolute best MMORPG there is !
One point not noted by the OP are the graphics, they're just awesome, that was the main reason i got involved in the game in the first place !
So, yes, give it a try, you wont be disappointed !

Agree 100%. Gankfest and Bots/hackers have ruined this game.
so says the person with a carebear avatar. so name a PvP game that has no ganking? every PvP game worth its binary has player ganking.
anyway, ya good write up. I concur with the OP. The politics in L2 is second to none. The only game that has player politics as good as L2 is Eve. I agree with you also on what happens to a game when the developers make you choose a side vs. players chosing for themselves and forging their own alliances.
the game is about PvP, economic control, castle control, and at times mob drops and controlling hunting grounds. Its not about questing, and if you dont like games where a player can interfere with your questing by using PvP mechanics..then ya yer gonna hate Lineage 2.

Stop overreacting.

And I don't buy any adena, never have and never will.

Every game is corrupt, because EVERY mmorpg has goldfarmers and bots. sure its a problem, but it is, imo, not a reason to stop playing or to not buy a game.
You forgot to tell people how hard it is to get into a clan and how loooong the grind is to get to the large sieges and how often those sieges actually happen. You also forgot to tell them how many people are allowed in a clan and how picky clan leaders and officers are in recruiting, because of it. You also forgot to mention the other 80% of the population who are not nice, the bots, and the extreme expenses of armor and anything really in the game.
I would recommend Shadowbane over Lineage 2 anyday. The grind is not that hard, it's basically like L2, accept the PvP is more open than L2. Sieges happen more often and you can actually create your own city and have it taken from you.
Shadowbane is for people who appreciate a more open game than L2 and don't have 10 hours a day to grind away in L2.
Darkfall will blow both of these games out of the water though.
anti botting / cheating inforcement. NCA will ruin your Aion. Have fun playing
with the China and Mr. AionWalker.
And to you anti gankers ... WoW'ers and L2'ers alike judge you under ..
CAREBEAR
Cry more please. /EQ for you
As for PvP, the only thing that could get more open than L2 is if they removed safe zones in towns. Trying to say Shadowbane is better than Lineage 2 is hilarious. Theres only 2 top MMORPG's out there. WoW and L2. World of Warcraft appeases to the Warcraft fans, RvR players, casual gamers. Lineage 2 caters to those who care about more meaningful PvP, graphics, mass pvp in castle sieges and the great community if you ignore the asshole griefers. The game truly brings out the best and worst out of people which makes for a fascinating history within the servers politics that is entertaining to the last day.
C5 sounds like it took care of the clan problem, but you still have the large grind problem and gear being so expensive it is overly tempting to buy adena.
Shadowbane offers no safe zones accept the newbie island, so that newbs aren't getting griefed trying to learn the game. Shadowbane also doesn't have a penalty for attacking people that don't fight back. L2 didn't really have a FFA system, because you would be flagged red for killing your enemies if they didn't fight you back. I don't condone griefing, but not having that feature does offer a more open PvP system. You also forgot that in L2, you cannot create player cities. You can actually create player cities, take them away from people and burn them to the ground if you want. Far better than L2.
Saying WoW and L2 is better than other games is a subjective opinion, which I don't share. That's like saying McDonalds is the best restraunt because it has more customers than any other restraunt out there. WoW is a shallow game, even for a loot/level oriented game. L2 would be a good game if it didn't have so many bots, didn't have such a long boring grind, and wasn't so gear oriented. It is also bullshit that you can't level at a decent pace or even win in PvP without soul or spirit shot, which is also unaffordable for a newb. The community members are also mostly rude or nonresponsive and others in this very thread can vouche for that. L2 is just a good idea ruined by a bad community. I think Shadowbane is 10x a better game than L2.
