That would be fun but I dont see why you people dont think itll be, but you tell me why.
I don't think it will fail, but I don't think it will be a WOW level success by any means. I expect it will do better than most turbine games have done historically speaking.
The one thing I do have to credit turbine with is learning from their mistakes, they make big game breaking mistakes pretty frequently but they generally only make each mistake once.
WHy do people think all new games must reach WoWs level of sucess, we all know wow isnt sucessful becaue the game is groundbreakingly good. Its good because its warcraft, if it was starcraft, or diablo it would be just as strong as an mmo.
All new games are as goood as their fanbase, if you like the game play it, dont choose games based on whether or not they can boast "5million subscribers"
I agree With desert On this one, a games Quality shouldnt be based on how Many Poeople the game will attract or by how much money the game Makes. Actually I don't really care how many people play this game or any other. I don't judge a game by the number of subscribers, if I play it and have fun then it's good enough for me.
Alot of people forget that the main reason we play MMOs is because we have fun playing them. It doesn't matter if everyone thinks the game will fail, or if everyone thinks the game sucks. The thing that matters is that you have fun playing it, because after all, you're playing for yourself not for someone else.

While Im also tired of comparing any up and coming mmo to WoW...it has set the precident. WoW opened up more for mmo's than I think most people realize. Big business for one, has now taken notice of the ammount of money that can be made with a mmo. That in turn makes it possible for more companies to get funding for there game. If you think about it from that viewpoint, WoWs success while currently putting a tight grip on the market right now, also opened up doors for THE FUTURE OF MUCH BETTER GAMES. And who doesnt want much better games.
Secondly, and Im sure you have heard this before but I will reiterate it because its so true. Many games have been successful, but none have brought in as many future MMO players into the genre as WoW has. So while WoW may get boring for many mmo vets and eventually those new players, there is now a whole new player base that has been introduced to MMO's and are HOOKED. When they stop playing WoW, they will not quit the genre but rather find another game to play. That in turn reinforces the market.
To the subject at hand however....Why does everyone think Lord of the RIngs will be a flop. I dont neccesarily think this game will fail. But it may not be a overwhelming success either. Everyone loves to speculate but we will just have to wait and see.
For me personally too many name brand games based off of movies just plain suck. It could be different since MMO's are built more for the long haul.
My other big contention with this game is the lack of PvP. I dont know how Turbine can justify it to themselves since the majority of there success has come from mmo's with PvP (AC1 AC2). To me that seems like a sell out. Sadly I have yet to see a game that has made PvE FUN. Make pve just as challening, non repetitious and fun as PvP based mmo's and I will gladly give it a try.
logan, many many people think that not having PvP is a good thing, me included.
As for WoW, I started with the first Everquest, not WoW and WoW sucks in comparison to any game I've ever played. I lasted three weeks in that horribly sucky game. I didn't even finish the free month before punting it to the curb and feel like I wasted alot of money on it. The reason why people like the game is because it's easy. Well, I'm in this for entertainment, not for it to be easy. WoW is primitive and useless.
How can you compare this to WoW? The only real similarities is that they are both MMOs and both based on pre-existing lore. LOTR will pick up where WoW failed. They are going to make the lore matter. In WoW it makes no difference if you know anyhitng about the world. LOTR will bring in detail and substance, it won't just be an optional story in the background. I don't think LOTR will beat WoW sub numbers, but who cares? Just means less idiots who come and spam the chat. LOTR is going to attract people who are interested in the story and the roleplaying oppertunities.
Originally posted by gumbi17 But how many people are just speculating and how many are actually playing the beta?
just judging from the previous page and this one I wou;d guess none. Febuaray is just around the corner, and there are rumors ( started by a Dev) of an open beta before release
Beta is already going on. You can guess all you want, but plenty of people have been accepted into beta and are already playing it. But no one can tell you whether they've been accepted or what they think of it so far because they all signed a legal document called an NDA. If they break the NDA, they can lose their account to beta (at the least) or be sued (depending on how bad the break of the NDA actually is).
No one is going to be stupid enough to break the NDA.
Yeah I know that beta is going on Moirae, I was just specualting that no one posting in the last few pages of this thread are in it. I did not read all 14 pages.

Well, EA is one of the largest game companies in existence today I would think. They have had their eye on the MMO space for a very long time along with the very first commercially viable mmo, the granddaddy of the genre and arguably the start of the current generation of mmo's: Ultima Online. The only thing wow's successes have done is limit the possibility for future games to be different from wow and for the genre to advance. Everyone wants their own wow and they might have a few million subscribers but whether or not wow has actually done anything positive for the genre... well thats something else entirely.
The largest problem Turbine faces with LOTRO is that its limited to only the books. Not all books like the silmarillon, but to the trilogy. That cuts out 99% of what middle earth is about. Before turbine got ahold of the game it was Middle Earth Online and could very well have been a resounding success. With the tighter focus the game may be too limited for some people's tastes.
Secondly turbine has its own demons to face. DDO for one. Here was the landing of the granddaddy of all rpg licenses and in many people's opinion they botched it big time. First by taking on this Eberron setting rather than Forgotten Realms. Secondly by making the game 100% group oriented, sure they are making strides to change that, but with no open areas, no exploration, and the idea of no grind is a lie because you have to grind the same instances over and over and over again it all makes DDO a hard game to recommend to anyone.
From some of the screenies it appears that much of the art assets for LOTRO have been ripped straight out of DDO and while it looks alright, it hurts lotro because it should have its own art team that is dedicated to bringing the world of middle earth to life.
Some say that Asheron's Call, turbines first game, was one of the best mmo's to ever have been released. I personally never got that far in it so its hard to compare myself. But from what I have heard and remember of Asheron's Call it doesnt sound like much of that games mechanics are making its way into LOTRO.
One of my guildies keeps talkign about monster play or soething to that effect. Where a player can actually take control of something like a boss mob for example a troll. He then gets to kill all the other players etc and though that sounds like a good idea it would be too easily exploited and I havent read anything about it but from him. If something like that did make it in, and it was exploit proof then that could be the hook that draws in large crowds.
Personally I do not think that it will outright fail, it will probably have more subscribers than swg, but being a 100% pve game, very limited in scope, and so tightly wound up with the trilogy I think that it only has itself to beat if that makes sense.
Oh and by the way, 200 million copies over 50 years isn't that much either.
Sorry I am picky about mis-use of numbers but that is 4 million books a year (although my source indicates that it has sold about 100 million but I'll go with your number). The Bible is averaging only 3 million a year over its life. That said Harry Potter and Chairman Mao are doing much better (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books).
Perhaps we should make an MMO based off Potter or Mao's views on Marx (I bet Jack Thompson would love that one).
It wont flop, i think it will be quite a sucsess, ppl must remember that it is 4-6 months away from release anything can still be added, changed or implemented.
PvP is being tested and beta testers have given this gave a major hype, personally i cant wait till I get a beta key!
Turbine have done a really good job this time, yes, its a complete turn around but they have done really well. Little touches ingame make it incredibly immersive. You have to admit the graphics are amazing!
theyve had over 8 years to get it right, so I doubt another 4 months is going to fix this disaster. and im about the biggest Middle Earth Tolkien fan there is but i have zero faith in turbine. they couldnt code themselves out of a wet paperbag
Well , so far it would seem that not everyone thinks it flop. In fact, the data gathered here suggests the opposite.
Amazing, I didn't know we had J.R.R. Tolkien's son here - nice to meet you, admriker4. Don't go claiming to be the biggest fan there is, when the real enthusiastic fans already know who that is. Any real fan of the works should know who received all the short stories first. You must be him if you are the biggest fan.
PS - you better have all the puzzles from the Hobbit Movie from way back when. You'd need those on top of all the books and short stories to at least be in the ballpark of being the second biggest fan.

a few years ago, you could have asked me if I would pre-order a MMO about LotR, and I would have said yes without even a single detail about the game. That was then... now, I'm used to having companies push half-assed games based on great concepts off on me, and I've learned the only way I can truely respond is with my wallet.
Like most people, I hope this one does well. What you people repeating 'don't bash it till you've played it' need to understand is that many of us have learned from harsh experience how things work. We learned, sometimes painfully, what are the right questions are to ask, and we keep them in mind- when a game doesn't satisfy the community at large, you start getting the kind of backlash this game is getting. Even if it seems like mindless bashing, its not. Personally I have learned to ignore all the great possibilities I see in my head for a favorite world or concept, and look at the representation of that world that is actually being offered.
Originally posted by elzilcho21 _______________________________________________________________________ Originally posted by Anofalye In case you didn't know, their are more than 1 TT game for LotR, trading cards, board games...yet, they are WAY behind D&D. Uuumm buddy I'd hate to break it to ya but I doubt D&D has hardly any sales compared to what LotR made off of just the books.
Peoples who buys games are gamers, not readers, not movies watchers either. Thinking LotR is even close to D&D is showing that you are not well-versed in gaming. I am pretty sure the MOVIES make more moneys then all these books, and this is irrelevant. Since you have to consider who buy games, not who watch movies or who buy books. But who buys games. And among the peoples buying games, D&D is by far the main RPG. No RPG has ever come close to it. Now if we precise it more, online gaming, then Blizzard may, or not, be ahead, with their franchise. But Blizzard is losing speed with WoW, they cripple their fanbase, trapping them into believing the game is cool then at 60, bang, nasty wall, that ain't helping Blizzard at all.
It is ridiculous to think D&D isn't their flagship, it is even if Turbines is too much of a gang of noobs to realise it. And they screw it up. Can they succeed with LotR? Maybe, but considering they fail with the MAIN RPG out there...good luck at making a MMORPG.
The marketing studies you are using would prolly tell you that a MMORPG about SPIDERMAN, RAMBO or POWER RANGERS would be more successfull than D&D. As a movie, they would be right, but for RPGs and MMORPGs, nothing is even close to D&D (except Blizzard when it is online gaming), there has been NO SUCCESSFULL RPG about the LotR in the past. To think it is ahead of the MAIN RPG is just showing that your marketing is full of Hollywood influence and have no clues about gaming as a whole. Turbines designers should have laugh at you and pinpoint that out, the fact they didn't is just showing that they are either noobs, or that they where intimidated for any reason. Gaming reality is not the same as Hollywood reality, and failure to adapt give you nasty surprises. According to YOUR STUDIES, the game labeled STO should claim out loud that it will be successfull, it certainly has more visiblity at hollywood than D&D, yet, for some reasons, STO have real designers, peoples who know a few things about gaming, and they would never consider STO the best franchise for a MMO, yet, they are aware of the potential and everything, but they are also aware that nothing is gained and that they have to work hard, they can't count on such a strong name. STO name is a lot weaker than LotR name, gaming-wise, but I am pretty sure that their game will make you envy them, their success. Because they don't count on false information, they try to make a great game and to focus on their assets. LotR as a main franchise when compared to D&D about a RPG game, that is totally hilarious and presponderous. See, let's take STAR WARS, they have a movie power similar to LotR, yet, STAR WARS is a stronger gaming franchise than LotR, it has some success with it RPG in the past, nothing as great as D&D. I never saw SoE claiming anywhere that they have the best franchise for a MMORPG with Star Wars, they know that EverQuest was already stronger than everything SW ever achieve in the RPG...so they work hard, very hard.
Saying that LotR is the main franchise for Turbine would be like saying that Star Wars is the main franchise for SoE. EverQuest is a much stronger gaming franchise then SW atm, and SoE would be agreeing with this at ANY moment (they would be too professional to say it openly, LA is their customer after all). Star Wars is a wonderful and powerful franchise, but it isn't as strong as EQ, MMORPG-wise. Yet, SoE would also look toward D&D with envy, with jealousy...toward LotR? In your dreams. Just for the fun, see how much interest SoE would have in doing a MMO about D&D and a MMO about LotR, you can trust their marketing team, it is a LOT better than yours, gaming-wise at least.

Quite honestly I belive LOTRO will do very poorly. I had been lucky enough to get into the beta test and feel as of right now it is going to flop. I mean there isn't much of a grind fest, and the quests are not that bad, but because of it's lack in punch it doesn't have a top run game time play, and I don't mean comparing to WOW. The gameplay is not as bad as DDO, but Turbine fails again.
Don't judge just cause it's one of my first posts...
sarah, you may like to delete some of what you just said. You just broke the NDA. You could not only be banned from MMORPG but will likely get banned from LOTRO as well.
I´m not in the beta so i have to judge the game by it´s screenshots and the general talk. And i must say i dont think that this game will be a hit. It just seems too ordinary. LOTR, to me, is about a feeling, whether i read it or watch the movies. And the screens certainly does not give me any feeling. So, i will try it if i can try it for free, i will not buy it based on what i´ve seen or heard. This might be a good game but LOTR demands something more. I hope i am wrong because i soo want to walk the middleearth and feel like a fellowship member..
Don't woory...sarah is not in the beta. If someone was dissappointed enough to so openly break the NDA they sure the hell would take the time to actually give some details. But rereading the post I am quite sure he/she is not in the beta.
sarah, you do realize that your IP is logged and will prob be sent to turbine to compare with their logs. Love that.
1. It's Turbine 2. It does nothing new 3. Has no pvp 4. Can't play as Orc 5. That lotr gif of that WOW piss take
for one I have an issue with people who sit here and say stupid crap about a game when they obviously have NO CLUE what they are talking about, and you are one of them. how about instead of trying to sound like you know what you are talking about you take the time to look up some information about the game? sound like a plan? thanks

OMG the post necro from hell. Not only is it ancient but its not even worth replying to because the game has launch since then. If you bothered to read the context of the post you would see its about the speculation of what the game would be like. Since we are all playing right now, sorta pointless to reply to it....also, I haven't seen a post from scaramoosh in a very long time.
Dude, there are no necros in LotRs so lay of the post from 7 months ago Sound like a plan? Thanks.

I hope i am wrong because i soo want to walk the middleearth and feel like a fellowship member..
sarah, you do realize that your IP is logged and will prob be sent to turbine to compare with their logs. Love that.

Thanks.
