I think it is just making up for some of the lost XP due to bugs, etc. Guys, you need to put away your beta feelings about this game and play. I too was very skeptical but this one will be a winner. You can disagree but if you have a pretty good rig you will enjoy the game. Change your mindset from obtaining levels and beating others to a certain level. Just lay back and enjoy the world. The performance is improving but you still need a good rig to run it however.
Why should I put away my beta feelings... If I have them therefore they must be legitimate. Please don't tell me that my feelings are invalid, thats grounds for some disagreement. In any case, IMHO this game is in BETA and not anything will change my opinion till they make Vanguard what it should have been. I'm am not the only one to feel this way, so there must be some validity in my argument. In any case, please keep paying for beta if thats whay you want. Some ppl like this game, but I'm only going to loose 50$ on this stinker.
Only 1700 characters have made it past level 30. That means if there's really over 100k subscribers only an extremely small percentage are really getting anywhere. When you start drawing conclusions from the data...
Are you joking? This isn't wow. Getting somewhere is LVL 20 in this game. In our Guild, out of over 30 members, only 2 toons are LVL 20 & 21, and we're all Beta Players. Those higher then 25 are GRINDING Missives & Group Grinding Elite Mobs. Those playing the game are LVL's 16-25 Adv, 6-20 Crafting and 50-120 Dip.
Then why are they doing the double exp? That'll just cheapen the accomplishment of the level 20s. I think it was said several times why they are doing it. While no1 will know for certain why, we can arrive to an intelligent conclusion that they are trying to mend wounds of current Vanguard players who lost their XP due to bugs and/or crashes. Its not a way to GAIN new customers, but rahter to KEEP current ones.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
The issue that I've always had with "Doulbe XP" or "Doulbe Honor" weekends is that it sorts of cheepens the experience of the game. Let me be CLEAR on this one, I'm not singling out Vanguard here, alot of games do this. I know you rabid Vanbois are just foaming at the mouth. waiting to pounce on someone who doesn't think Brad was blessed by god when he made this game. But anyways, I know it's probably just me and I can be admitedly silly when it comes to stuff like this but I've always been of the oppinion that if your content holds true, if the experience in your game is enjoyable than things like this just aren't needed. EQ2 did this when the servers would crap out or back when experience was hell to get, WoW did this when people were forced to grind honor boringly over weeks just to move a bit ahead and Lineage1 did this when the first servers opened in NA and they found the populace there less then happy with the grinding. I realize that it's a quick fix and I don't think it's a huge cover up by any stretch of the imagination for a major flaws but as I said, I do think it's a little lame and cheapens the experience over the long run.
Why do stores have specials and promotion prices? If there are 5 shops with equaly priced items and same quality, then all it takes for 1 shop to gain a boost in clientelle is give a small bonus to customers. This way you might gain new customers, but most important, you wont lose your old ones. Its like a bone thrown to a dog, it wont satisfy his hunger, but it will make him happy for a while.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
I think it is just making up for some of the lost XP due to bugs, etc.
That's exactly right. If you read the whole post, rather than the top two lines, you see that further down in the next paragraph they explain that their data mining (which all companies do) has shown that XP gain rate has been a tad slower than they had anticipated it, making the time to level (hours per level, I guess) a bit longer than they had planned. So, they are globally boosting XP gain from kills (as they feel this needs to be a bit higher), and the double XP weekend sort of makes up for 1 month or so of "not quite as fast as they had planned" progress. I think that's pretty much all it can be taken to mean at this point.
I mean really, are any of the folks here who hate VG for so many other reasons, going to re-up their subs for a double XP weekend? And if not what is it they would hope to accomplish in terms of subscriptions? It'd be like SWG announcing a double-XP weekend for the NGE -- and expecting the NGE hatebois (of which I am one) to suddenly change their mind and start playing. Not gonna happen... and they know it.
And there it is !!! Best way to build your game up if you play Vanguard, knock another game. Cmon MX, your like 10 times smarter than this. I'm not saying I dissagree with you here, lvl 20 is a pretty good level to get to in Vanguard, but by no means is it a stratospherically different or harder than WoW as you guys make it out to be.
It takes a lot longer to get to 20 in Vanguard and if you don't group it'll take probably 10 times longer. Do you disagree?
I'll call you on this. It only took 3 weeks for a SOLO player to hit max. How is that 10x harder than WoW? What is the definition of "harder", mobs with 10x the hp's?? I really fail to see how this game is any more complicated than any other MMO out there. You have openers, bridges/spam, and finishers on a crit.. .. Maybe they should put a disclaimer on the box requiring a degree in rocket science eh? Really, how could anyone learn to mash buttons 1-9 in VG's sophisticated scale?? Best call MIT and ask them to offer an advanced VG course. What is with you Vanbois and your eliteist hardcore uber egos??
First you mentioned Sigil is just making up for lost XP, then you tell everyone to not worry about levels. Which is it? I mean, shouldn't the diehard VG players boycott the weekend because it's not "hardcore"? If VG players like to take their time and level slowly, then double xp weekends are not targeting the customer base. This is targeted to those who are leaving due to the grind and boring combat. I am certain Sigil has gathered info on players who have not renewed their subscriptions. There is no reason for VG to have an event like this when they are promoting themselves as a "challenging" MMO.
If lost XP due to bugs were an issue, Sigil would have done what most other companies do. Either fix the problem or hand out a couple of free days.
The problem I see is you are trying to take a general feeling or playstyle ("hardcore") and trying to make your own personal interpretations of what those people who consider themselves "hardcore" should feel. Likewise making a blanket generalization about how their target audience "should" feel about this weekend due to your interpretation of their views on such events.
There are alot of people who simply don't agree with the philosophy you are saying that: More time to grind levels = More challenge. Therefore alot of people don't share the theory that such an event means the end of the world for Sigil and Vanguard and it's...."hardcore" nature. (If they even share the view that it's ONLY targeting the most hardcore crowd, which many won't)
It was convenient, because it gives weight to the conspiracy theory the thread is based on, but YOU feel like it's a bad omen due to your own pre-conceived notions about the game, it's community and the developers. To others it is a couple days of extra experience gain because that's all it is.
I can't see it as a bad omen personally, but only because I could never imagine a company saying "Our game is going right down the tubes....maybe a couple of days of doubling the experience (that noone wants to earn) will save the day...yay!" So if things were really as bad as you thought they are, then Sigil would be worried about alot more then something as trivial as getting double experience for 2-days.

I'm not knocking Wow in the least. WoW is a Power-Gamer's Heaven, and I'm sure I could get dozen's of Folks to agree with me. VG is simply a much slower game to progress in.
I was told within the first 2 weeks WoW was Launched, there were a TON of LVL 60's. If you look at VG, the only one close is a Necro (getting thier Pets fixed soon BTW) and the nearest of other Professions are in thier low 40's.
My point was that this game is designed for SLOW, continual advancement. I have Guildies who LOVE WoW, and they have said clearly that if this was WoW they could be at or near 60 by now, and they are all in their Teen LVLs. My comment is based on the COMPLETELY different design model, and progression timetable.
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

I don't understand why people claim "Desperation" for a move like this. Things like this are not meant to draw in new players, but are meant to: - Reward existing players for having to deal with the current bugs. - Get a real head-count & test server loads. Those playing know first hand the Servers are all packed. Hopefully they'll start fixing issues now, and we won't need these weekends anymore.
Yes, they definitely need to start up some new servers. It is getting very crowded on my server and as an uppity high-elf, I like a little solitude.
I play on Flo, not the busiest server, and it is definatly crowded. I've been in the middle of NOWHERE (once a small Island that took 12 minutes to swim to) Harvesting, and run into multiple Groups and Harvesters. Peak time on Flo cause constant Chuck Crashes in the main Crafting Cities, or LVL 20+ Large Dungeons. Anyone who has been into the Shield has truely seen Hell...
I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!
I don't know about WOW being easier, but I was able to raise a toon up to lvl 20 by playing only an hour or two at a clip 2-3 times a week for 3 weeks. I did this without exclusively grinding. So far, I find Vanguard to be a much meatier game overall and a bit more complex. My highest toon on Vanguard is lvl 9. It has taken me roughly 45% more time and effort to level in Vanguard SOH. I am one person who is not going to complain about a double XP weekend.
Actually, World of Warcraft definatly gave freebees like this. When the server were really shitty and you could never play I recieved tons of free days. It was around march of 05 that they gave us 2 lvls of double XP(rested bonus) I know Vanguard is probably doing it for different reasons, not that I am insisting that they're having money trouble, but don't try to say that other games didn't do this untill they were failing.

Originally posted by Shoal Now, V:SoH, on the other hand, was supposed to be 'hardcore'. But, I guess with SoE in charge, things will be going a little differently now. Time to start to make V:SoH into another SWG-NGE.
SWG was a crappy game before NGE.
SoE doesn't control the game play of VG.
If you want to blame someone for a crappy game, blame Sigil.
As stated in the report, this double xp weekend is for pioneers of the game, the ones who have put up with memory leaks that would crash you to the desktop and most likely leave your toon at the mercy of the mobs you were fighting before you crashed (which basicaly means death) and the other various bugs...
A little off topic but I am addressing the posters who keep saying that WoW had a bad launch. Yes, they didn't have a perfect launch but that was due to server issues because of too many players. WoW didn't have mobs disappearing or you suddenly can't see your group members on the map, it's problems were because Blizzard wasn't expecting1million+ (not sure how many they had at launch...could possibly be a lot more) players to come into the game on launch day.
To all you haters out there, this game is going to be around for a long time. The game is starting to get smoother although it does still have a little lag. It's a very in depth game and it's fun to play and challenging.
I know what I'll be doing this weekend, and that will be playin' Vanguard: Saga of Heroes!!!!! Oh, and I might also watch the UFC pay-per-view.
Everquest had a double EXP weekend a few weeks ago
SOE is involved with both games, not surprising. I haven't played EQ1 since Planes of Power. I have heard the game has had many bad additions and changes since.

Do you believe everything you are told?
I was told Vanguards death penalty was when you summoned your corpse to an alter a group of Vanguard GMs drive to your house and beat you with baseball bats, to help encourage corpse runs. Someone told me that it's true, so it must be, right?
haha omg Vanguard offered a double xp weekend! No they can't do it..thats so unfair..they tricking people in to making them stay, its the end of the world!!

Taking something small and blowing it up..yup yup..its a ploy..and we seen it on 3 different boards..let's whine some more.

It takes a lot longer to get to 20 in Vanguard and if you don't group it'll take probably 10 times longer. Do you disagree?
I would most defanitely dissagree with 10 times longer, absolutely I would.
Comparisons of these sorts are by their very nature subjective, it takes me about the same time to get from 1 to 10 in Vanugard as it does in Warcraft or EQ2, 11 to 15 is dafnitely a little longer in Vanguard, EQ2 takes a bit less and WoW is the faster by I'd say 1.5 x or so.
The big difference hits at 16 to 20 where grouping makes more sense to level and gear starts to make more of a difference in Vanguard as where in WoW or EQ2 your still in cruising along fairly easily on your own. Given a good guild and or friends, the leveling is about the same as EQ2 if not a ltitle more and of course WoW is faster, I'd say at this point your about 2 - 3 times faster.
20 to 30 I just found a complete bore in Vanguard as where in EQ2 and WoW I found that was when I raelly started to get into the classes and having the most fun. Personaly though, I think that's just some gearing tweaks and spells tweaks that needs to be done by Sigil, something that is fixable for sure.
After that I can't really comment on, most of my guild and then shorthly myself quit so I can't really say what leveling was like after lvl 34 although I can say that spells, gears and leveling as a Blood Mage got a little more fun after 28, in term of strength and spells, the world was still just as dull though, that's more of a personal preference mind you.
