Look at it this way plain and simple. Ask yourself, if the theme was not star wars would you still play it?

    Or better yet,

If there was another Star Wars MMO would anyone be playing SWG?

My guess is that once there is a honest to goodness release of a duckpond that is fully stocked and loaded and managed responsibly that many will choose to hunt and fish there.

Besides, SWG can't keep going forever on 49.5K subs... Not when 254K wasn't enough for LEC/SOE, which was why we got the NGE.

My gut tells me that we will get some sort of KOTORMMO or Star Wars Pre-EP4 MMO announcement later this year for a late 2008-early 2009 release date and a sunset announcement of SWGNGE sometime in 2008. I've heard two different places about a shutdown of SWG in early `08.

Oh well, Warhammer Online will be out by then. That is where most of Bloodfin's -FOAD pvp guild is looking to go once it comes out.

I'm not sure I would want to throw numbers like that out to this forum community, but I have had the same thought and I strongly agree with you.

Sub numbers are obviously down from pre-CU, and if pre-CU was not good enough then how can post-NGE be considered a success?

  • randomtrandomt Member UncommonPosts: 1,220

Though I agree in principle that another sw mmo would be nice; from a business perspective, unless it was being released by soe, it wouldn't make much sense to release a new version of something that has been done before, how ever good/bad you consider it to have turned out.

My guess is there is a core of at least 100K players who would play a pre NGE or pre CU version of SWG basically as long as it was offered. Even though I do play the current game, reluctantly because there isn't anything else right now for my tastes, I can tell you that most players I communicate with in game feel the way I do, they hold their nose to play the game.

I have NEVER encountered a single person, not even ONE, in game, on the Bloodfin server who wouldn't rather be playing pre NGE, even if they are fairly satisfied with the current game.

Well, my point was not that there should be another SW mmo, but rather if there was another SW mmo would Galaxies be able to hold on?

    Could it be competitive?

TBH if they rolled SWG back to Pre-CU and added content and fixed the professions I'd come in a heart beat, but that'll never happen or at least I don't see it happening. So my next hope is that a KotORMMO comes out!

I'm not trolling.  Hear me out.

First, you have every right to take your money elsewhere.  If you left and found a home then good.  For you SOE-hating "cabalists" who just want to see SWG fail here are some words for you.

SOE is a business and it does everything to meet financial ends... period.. end of discussion.   None of this was personal.   The bottom line is that, for all its success on the user side, SWG couldn't be maintained as a financially viable business. I don't know how much more clear they can be on this.  The game, for better or worse, is now much more stable, far fewer bugs, easier for new players to get into, and has vastly more content.  The only problem is that the community isn't there.  Why?

Because all you SOE-haters have abandoned your community.

Again, people have every right to move on and find a new game but don't say that SOE abandoned you. We all lost alot in the NGE.  SOE did what it had to do to keep SWG financially afloat.    If you are one of those who miss the old days, and you'd go back if the community was there, but hate SOE so much that you want to see NGE and SOE fail then I blame..

    YOU

because the community starts with you and you are sitting here whining and moaning.   The dev team wont even listen to the community as a whole because of you.  They have to pick and choose who they can get feedback from because of the anti-nge rhetoric.  Thats where the disconnect is now.  You complain about them but its the community you are hurting.

I've said this before and Ill say it again.  It wasn't the old system that made it great, it was the vast community. The old system was just the framework. Perhaps it was better but it had major bugs and the community still adapted to the bugs and prospered.  Now that the framework has been fixed to be more stable you'd rather complain than give it a shot long enough to respark the old community back and adapt to the new framework.

I hear alot of people say that they would resub 2,3, or 4 accounts if they brought back the old system and yet, it would cost a fraction of that to give the new system a shot long enough to respark the community.

Not only are you part of the problem but you are ruining the solution.

But we had a great game to play. A game that was not like anything else.

If SOE had put the same amount of time and money into Pre-CU SWG........thinks of the game it would have become.

When they turned into a WoW clone, i stopped playing......because i hate WoW and WoW clones.

So SOE abandoned me for WoW.

Otherwise i would have contuinued to play untill this day

To that I would say Galaxies would Die fast, unless the new game totally sucked, just because us vets would be all over that game and the viral marketing from us vets along with any marketing the new game company put out would squash SWG! If it were released by SOE it wouldn't do well just because of the vets! I think the only hope for a Star Wars game to survive/thrive in the MMO world it has to come from a different publisher/developer than SOE!

They even said themselves they were willing to "sacrifice" some of their playerbase.

In 1912 a ship called the Titanic struck and ice burg and started to sink.  People rushed to the few life boats aboard and were lowered to saftey.  Those people leaving the ship ruined the cruise.  As evidence i submit that there was singing, drinking, and dancing before those people left the ship and after they left no one was dancing.

SOEs main problem has been that they ignored the people playing the game and focused on people who SOE wanted to play the game.  Your post suggests they have fallen back into that habit.  When will they learn?

"The bottom line is that, for all its success on the user side, SWG couldn't be maintained as a financially viable business." That is a flat out lie. Many MMO's survive with far fewer players than what SWG had pre-CU or even pre-NGE.

"The game, for better or worse, is now much more stable, far fewer bugs, easier for new players to get into, and has vastly more content." As for the bugs, the SOE mentality was obviously what would have been the point in fixing bug "x" when the CU/NGE would make it irrelevant anyway, why try fixing bugs for a system that'll be gone soon? As for content, are you saying that if the NGE and CU hadn't happened there would have been no expansions, no RotW or ToOW? You're an idiot, the best expansion came during pre-CU, i.e. JtL. As for "easier", who wants that? If I wanted easy, I'd play WoW, but then that's the point isn't it?

"The dev team wont even listen to the community as a whole because of you." How nice of you to try absolve the devs of blame for not listening to their audience. I don't know how to break this to you, but the devs didn't listen to the players way before the NGE, even back at the CU they didn't give a crap about what the players were saying.

"Now that the framework has been fixed to be more stable you'd rather complain than give it a shot long enough to respark the old community back and adapt to the new framework." So if you took your computer somewhere to be repaired, and they gave you back a "Learning to Spell with Elmo" or something, that'd be ok with you? Why not? It's a lot easier to use, and it doesn't have any of the bugs Vista or XP have!

"[Insert tirade about it being the people-who-left's fault]" You say the pre-cu community abandoned SWG? Another lie. When people left on Nov 17th 2005 it wasn't SWG they were leaving, it was some bastardized version of it, raped of all the diversity and character it had, just another single figure class game, another cookie cutter MMO.

Have you ever heard the phrase "actions speak louder than words"? Do you know what SOE's actions said to the community when the pushed the NGE after such negative reception to the product on the TCs? It said "We don't care about you", plain and simple, and not creating at least a few  classic servers and offering character transfers to people who wanted to play pre-NGE or pre-CU added emphasis to that. They cared far more about people who weren't playing the game than the people who were, it's as simple as that, and it's wrong.

What you are suggesting is nothing less than emotional blackmail. It's the same as staying with your wife even if you don't love her for the sake of the kids. I will not be blackmailed into playing a game I hate just to see old friends.

Edit: I'm sorry, I've just seen how old this thread is and the calls for it to die, but some of the things he said rather pissed me off.

At fanfare Smedley stated tha they dropped the ball on SWG.

    - During Smed's big press conference when he said "Who here plays SWG?" someone shouted: "Dead Man Walking!" But all in all smed praised us the community and really kissed up to the fact that they dropped the ball but that the new dev team is doing some of the greatest work in the industry.

Soe abondoned us. But now...we won.

FEH, what did we win?  The fact that SMED admitted he screwed up?  Sure that's a nice moral victory but until we get our PRE-CU back, (i.e. never), we haven't won a thing...

I guess when you deal with an MMO treating a game as just being a business isn't so sensible.  The game "business" is the community i.e. players, and if you can't satisfy them you don't have jack.  Pack your bags a go run a Burger King.

My 8 year old would be doing "great work" if he changed anything in the NGE.

This is just not a smart statement, how can you NOT do better work then what was there?    I mean when your at the bottom anything you do can be somthing better.
