Just got done with HGL. It plainly sucked - it was instanced (not an MMORPG) and just boring and repetitive. It sucked as a shooter, not just as an MMORPG.
I hear tabula has quests and levels, two things I despise.
Games these days cater to a crowd that cannot survive without a beaten path in front of them - being pushed and coddled along the way to an endless cycle of gear/level grind.
How did this happen? What happened to the fun times we all had in shadowbane and other MMORPGs? Even runescape has better pvp than half the online games these days. I applaud WoW for AT LEAST allowing us to kill alliance on pvp servers. Although the battlegrounds have practically ruined any chance for meaningful pvp - and killing an alliance player really causes little damage to them.
I just feel like I'm playing with a bunch of 10 year olds, rather than developed gamers. Maybe times have changed, and I haven't. I look at friends who were introduced to MMORPGs through WoW, and are quitting the game because it has stolen their time and left them with no good memories. If only I could have shown them the old MMOs, maybe they'd understand why I play EVE. Are people really happier playing carebear MMORPGs? I hear a resounding 'no'. Enter random teamspeak/ventrilo servers, listen to the misery and frustration of EQ2 and WoW players - you'll see what I mean.
Unfortunate that there are so many carebears these days - they can't fend for themselves like an 18 year old who has been dumped by his parents into the harsh working world. They can't survive ridicule and harrassment, running like children to the feet of GMs who will readily step into the game world and yank an 'evil' character out. They will conglomerate and clog the sewers of shit that are all heading in the same direction with the same meaningless purpose.
Gone are the days when you had to watch your back
Gone are the days when you had to fight hard to survive
Gone are the days when you had something to lose
Gone are the days when evil could exist
Gone are the days when your enemy could chase you behind city walls (and take them over)
Gone are the days when you fought for your friends, and jumped from your chair when victory struck
Long gone are the days of the warrior
Soon all the players who have played MMORPGs before 2000, will no longer be here to offer their experience and knowledge to the new generation - who will spend their time in a long, long instance; only to emerge with a single item that has a higher numerical value, then head straight back into that instance.
It was fun the first half of my MMORPG. I've met a lot of good chaps who've left MMORPG gaming for good, and I'm afraid that I will be too. There's just too many good games out there - and I'm not wasting my time on another stupid MMORPG (besides EVE, lol).
Flame away, tell me how much better MMORPG's will be without me. You're absolutely right; I have no place in your dreamless, creativity-devoid, levelling treadmill. Maybe I'll accomplish the task of telling one MMORPG rookie that things can be better - before they abandon this genre.
If this post is a waste of time, and being critical in general is a waste of time (democracy, anyone?), then adhere to your own philosophy and ignore this post rather than wasting your time trying to dismissively defeat my argument. If you have something that is constructively critical about anything I have posted, then I am all ears!

I am not posting to fight with you, so I will not touch your hellgate slag.
I do understand where your coming from, I settled on WoW for almost a year in it's time because despite it's short comings (my opinion of course) blizz made a fun game but in comparison to MMO sI started with it and all we are getting since are lame, uninspired games. I hope AoC does prove to be ground breaking and WAR to be DAoC 2.0 or even that we see Darkfall and it gives us everyting it promises for I to may follow suit and leave the MMORPG to the new gen. Give us DAoCs, SWGs and SBs or atleast break the damn mold and bring us something worth playing.
I have pretty much decided that if WAR doesn't pull through for me I'm going to say goodbye to mmorpgs. I don't blame the mmorpg market though. I just beleive that we have grown apart.
For me if SWG doesn't ever released pre cu classic servers or a company doesn't company that formula then i'm not playing a mmorpg too. I think really the only company that'll take risks now on something like that are CCP but tbh World of Darkness is not something that interests me.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I totally agree with you. My last hope of mmorpgs is Darkfall.
yeah well at this point we gotta pick the less evil MMO out of the pack.
The chronicles of spellborn will be PVE to the rim but i might try it anyway for the little meager pvp it might have. their community is my main concern. There was a bunch of crafters angry the best mats would be in pvp zones. Then finally someone explained to those noobs they could buy the items from a gatherer/pvper and they saw a little reason. still, they seem very dense too me they shouldn't need a vet to explain the concept lol its very common in EVE Online (how mats are handled)
Age of Conan is looking up if they can deliver on a good combat system. yes- its the same old crappy class/level based system we all known for past 20+ yrs. but pvp levels will be split off from PVE levels. thus, a lower leveled player can possibly kill higher lvl guy I read. that might be a lie tho i have my doubts
I have been feeling pretty frustrated with MMOs in general lately myself. The endless treadmill filled with boring gameplay, all for the purpose of getting one more monthly fee out of you.
It really hit me a few weeks ago when the game I am playing now did a survey to see what people would be willing to pay for extra services. I'm all for extra stuff, so I approached the poll without any particular disdain for the concept. It turns out that extra services include things like more vault space, or faster travel. I want those things, but I don't want to pay more for them. What bothers me is the thought that my monthly fee pays for guys to sit around and create a pretend demand, then charge me more money to fill it. Of course we need more storage space, it's intentional. Of course it takes forever to get around the map, if it was fast we wouldn't have to pay for as many months of service..... Well, not with the boring, repetitive gameplay these games offer. 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 heal , 1,2,3,1,2,3.
Why can't the gameplay be fun, and compelling enough to make us keep playing without a carrot. I'd like to play a game where the actual gameplay is fun, not just something I have to endure for some sort of in-game reward down the road. Coll loot should be a happy side-effect of great gameplay. You should be having so much fun playing that occasionally you look down and say, "Cool, when did I level?".
I had some pretty high hopes for TR being that game... I guess they could still turn it around, but right now it seems like more of the same. I still have my fingers crossed for conan.... but I feel like that is really the last chance I am giving MMOs. I pay three monthly subscriptions right now and I spend more time playing Guitar Hero or Madden.... at least they are all fun right away, and until I turn them off. I tried to play an MMO today, but by the time I got all the way across the map to where we were we had quests, I was already frustrated and bored. Sometime I just feel like they forgot what they were supposed to be selling us.
-----Zero Punctuation Eve Online Review-----
As the OP said. EVE is the game out there for the more hardcore PvPer but it still caters for the carebear community. It ticks all the boxes but unfortunately if a person is not into ships or SCI-FI then its not the game for them. What the mmo world needs now is a fantasy game that captures the elements of EVE and improves on them. Darkfall is the only game that looks like its going to cover this. Tabula Rasa is fun and for someone who hates grinding missions that is saying something. However its not EVE or sandbox.
kudos some one finally said it , im with you to the old gen mmorpgs despite there graphics where beter in almost ever way communties that would accually help you, old shcool but kickins where if you lost you really did lose your shoes hat and your sword and where being evil was a choice , and monster that really could kick your butt!, most games now if you "pk" if you can even call it that anymore youre cast out of town chased by npcs and players alike and there is no bounus for becoming so. and so no real "pk"s exist anymore even if you do rake in the alliance or horde kills its not completly freelance like it should be most of us older gamers spend all day in some stupid office and when we get home after having to walk the dog do the dish's and tend the the childern and the wife dont have time to sit and wait 4hours for a good pvp battle ground just to get 3 points or tokens to get some stupid cape that is .0001% beter than what you got on now beleave me when i say it if some one was to make a game that operated like the old shcool ones i grew up on with a good Gui overhall it would be unRivaled in almost everyway. but it seems thease days all the new mmorpgs that are coming out are dead ive long since left the mmorpg worlds behind for the single player ones there just more injoyable to play then haveing to go threw all the hassles of the new ones
Can I have your stuff?
Salvatoris, your sig reminds me of what I want in an MMO. Mechwarrior/Battletech on the scale of EVE. A galaxy to fight over, but unlike EVE it's pretty much 100% planetside conflicts. The various houses vs clan with merc groups. Even a smaller scale persistent world Mechwarrior would be nice. That IP has been dormant for too long.

same boat, sad sad situation. it isnt just mmo's either tho. 1 thing i would pay extra for would be completely iron clad ADULT servers linked directly to bank accounts (not just pay as you go credit cards), with real adult things like strip teases instead of gay dancing, removal of profanity filters, extra voilence, and most importantly no stupid kids asking questions.
Hey, how about a porn MMO?
..... nah, maybe not.

i hope they deliver i dont hear much talk bout this MMO.
Still holding out hope for WAR, and in a recent interview they were talking about improving the world RvR and making it more significant. They also mentioned splitting the servers into different kinds, with some being entirely RvR....including the ability to kill anyone anywhere.
Death penalty probably won't be as severe as back in the olden days, but hopefully there will be some initiative for destroying the enemy around every turn.
Best throwback we can expect, I think.
There is a place for every player I do believe, but not every game has to cater to every type of user. The fact that you or me or 70 million people do not like something has no bearing on those who do enjoy it. Also speaking as a "veteran" having played MMO games since 99' I can say that my tastes have gradually changed over the years due to real life circumstances. Back in my younger days these games would have never appealed to me at all, But now at least offer me the ability to play a game in what limited time I have and be somewhat competitive with other players. The players of today though do not need our guidance, it is not our duty in life to provide them such gems of wisdom on the all important matters of video games.
Noone was around when we started playing and some of us are doing just fine.

Nice! Will keep an eye on it. But the Battletech IP is what I really want. Everything else is just a pale immitation.

Dont be a freak mate! just games! there are other things in life like, sex, work, sex, studies, fun, party, sex, music, dance, sex, beatiful women/men, sex I forget to say that there is sex in life? besides, I think HGL is not an mmorpg, is more like an fps, but is not repetitive and boring like click and point griding or repetitiv hit and click questing
AHMEN, I do miss all MMORPGS before the year 2004/5..I do wish for all the good games to come back but i just don't think that will happen.
Playing: Everthing
Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
What r u on drugs? WAR & AOC are both coming up.
CURRENTLY PLAYING SHAIYA
I suggest:
Start EvE, play it for 6 months, buy big transport ship, spend all your money and put stuff in to the cargo ship, before the trip kill yourself and don't upgrade the clone, and go for a fun ride in lo-sec.
You will remember the days when you had to watch your back.
You will remember the days when you had to fight hard to survive.
You will definitely remember the days when you had something to lose.
You will know evil.
You will be chased... And your fortress (POS) will fall.
You will remembers the days when fought with your friends, and if you survive gank attempt by some miracle you will jump from your chair.
You will meet warriors.
those still have the grind system ? read OP again
Nah, not exactly. What happens (and I've seen myself do this): The games will get more and more sucky, the person(s) in question will get more and more disgruntled...and with no gaming options that really grab them, they will spend more and more time in these forums complaining about it and less and less time actually playing any games. Every so often they will make an attempt and play pretty much every game that comes out for a month, three at most, then realize they really hate it, they might struggle on for another month or two trying to make themselves like it, but in the end they end up right back here, replacing level and gear grinding with the sad realization that they have achieved 5 stars.
Then, one day they will call someone an F'in noob when they get disgruntled, get banned, lose a couple stars, then madly post to get them back...it's a sad, sad life.
D.
I'll be giving Darkfall another year to change my attitude toward the MMO industry. If it doesn't happen then apparently the MMO industry doesn't think much of how I'd like to play a game. That's fine though, because I don't think much of them and won't be giving them a cent of my hard earned money. It won't mean a damn thing to them but hey, atleast I won't be wasting time and money in a genre that doesn't even make an attempt to be appealing to me anymore.
