People tell me graphics don't matter and only gameplay does but to me if i'm going to be looking at it for a long time then it HAS to look really great. Now i'm not saying the graphics have to be technically amazing like Crysis but they do have to be artistically good looking like Okami or TF2, doesn't mean they all have to look cartoony, just using them as a example.
However when I look at WAR all I see is a dated generic game based on a engine which was probably being made 10 years ago, though released 7/8. WOW nailed the cartoony great looking artistic style but then I look at WAR and I just think to myself "meh" I mean the textures all are really bad looking like they came from a late 90's game.... example; http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/newsletter/2008_02/beta04.jpg Got this off the new newsletter and look at that horrible Chaos armour. Then I was watching some videos and all I see is very bad animations which just arn't fluid and look really horrible, after playing TF2 it's a real downer because than game has such amazing animations and for a FPS is amazing! The little i've seen of the world just seems to look really ugly and empty, I know Warhammer is meant to look gritty but this doesn't look like that at all, just feels very generic and boring.
I'll give this game a chance when it comes out but for me the biggest disappointment is the game didn't go with the dark grim art style of the CG trailer which is what Warhammer should look like. Instead Mythic seemed to have gone with a generic cartoony style which just ends up looking like DAOC than Warhammer.
Though I spose that's going to be the story of this games life, more DAOC than Warhammer lol.

As stated often before, many of the WAR videos and screenshots have been taken with medium (or low in some cases) graphics enabled. If you check out some of them with full graphic detail on and such, it looks better.
Edit:
Thinking about it, there hasn't been a newer/better engine released lately. Maybe I missed news of one, but it's been several years now by my count.
Yeah unfortunately some screens make it out that are low to mid reso graphics. Take vanguard for example, pump it to max and the screens are insane. Mid to low res makes it look like a standard game.

Games played: to many to list, been playing MMO's since 2001

And seriously, who cares about the graphics? As long its a modern engine the game is ok to play. There is nothing more irratating then good graphics and lame gameplay. Both would be fun, but i choose gameplay over graphics any day.
And WAR graphics is not that bad.
Yeh but if I don't like the look of the world or the characters then I wont want to play through it because that's what I play mmorpgs for to live in another world and care about my character.... just wont happen If I can't care about how kool my character looks.
Well don't play then *is tired of this dead horse topic* Warhammer looks like warhammer. If you've ever seen the table top game this wouldn't be an issue.

You've missed the point of MMORPG combat games, it really isn't about your character's looks, maybe there's a America's best looking model mmo out there somewhere.

Naw, you just missed news about them. Here is a link to the best one I have seen. But the focus on NEW is kind of silly too. It's not like the good engines aren't constantly being improved. Unreal is up to version 4 or 5 now, I believe.

Tell that to the people that play on RP servers. I think all aspects of how your char looks are important. Just look at how people on the forums went gaagaa over the last AoC video. People love the idea that you can make a char with a broken nose.

Just because YOU don't care what a game looks like doesn't mean EVERYONE thinks the same way.
Graphics is a factor in whether I decide to play an MMO its not the only factor or the majority factor but its an important factor.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
I imagine during a testing phase you don't have your best graphics available primarly because you are testing other aspects of your game. (Plus, in this day and age where a game can install for 10-20 gigs... O.o... why would you want your testers to download that? Just give them what they need.)

I imagine since you pretty much have most of the designs already available... you don't have to worry about creating new designs, just use the ones that are in existance. I'd focus more on testing the engine and how things mesh together.
The skin you want will come, but first you need to get the skeleton and nervous system functioning smoothly.
its true if you turn up the graphics in warhammer that the graphics look a lot different and better. they arent bad but i also think they will add more and make it a lot better once they decide on testing it.
and whoever say that graphics dont matter is full of it. cause if that were the case we would all be playing mudds or text based games or mmos with atari 2600 graphics. I know they wanna sound all tough and elite cause they think gameplay is the only thing that matters so everyone is wrong about having good graphics and how everyone is all carebear or fruity or whatever but it doesnt.
people like the visual stimulation and adds to the feel. hence the evolution of any and all games out there.
i started with Asheron's Call and im telling you right now that no way in hell would i still be playing MMORPGs if the graphics were still the same as that in every game no matter the gameplay.
Seriously guys, I am going to run out of new dead horse pics to post.
Graphics are not problem, EAMythic will deliver before the game is released, and we will all parade through the streets of Altdorf singing songs of joy and happiness. Patience my friend.
here is a classic expamle of the mistakes op's make everyday....how can you base a statment or opinion on a game still in beta? LMAO the reason it is in beta is for trial and error....wait for the game to come out before you try to bash it......and btw bro....cant you tell that pic was made on a low resolution? lmao if you have a better cpu the game looks better.....play wow on 800x600 then bump it up and tell me it dont look like the dif between Psone and PS3 lmao
We should really really make a "beating on a dead horse" Contest giving Beta invites!
lol where do you get these pics!!!
Google and photoshop.
I think that is a cop out reply.
Warhammer could still be and look like Warhammer with a more robust graphics engine.
That being said the engine is tuned/created to work on "most systems". So don't expect it to be the top of the line. I think the graphics engine in wow is old but tons of people still play it so... perhaps they making the right choice.

I never really understood all the hate that this art style generates. I personally think that the devs made the right choice by using the style they did in WoW, and the WAR devs are making the right choice for WAR.
WoW's art direction stayed true to the previous Warcraft games (and the Warhammer universe that it was based on) and allowed a wide range of PC configurations to play the game at a decent clip. That being said, I don't think WoW and WAR are identical, merely similar.
As for WAR, I REALLY dig the art direction and don't think that the esence of the Warhammer universe could have been expressed any better. I think the over-the-top semi-cartoonish look of the engine was by far the best choice they could have made, just go and look at the table-top pieces and the art in all the manuals and books and you'll see that it matches up to what's in the game pretty well. I definitely think that anything more "realistic" or "technical", ala EQ2/Vanguard, would have been a huge mistake for WAR. The WAR graphics are detailed and sharp while remaining colorful and expressive, and from what I've seen will allow a wide range of PC configurations. Warhammer is all about being over-the-top and visceral and I think the art direction and graphics engine will allow the player to be fully immersed in the world.
To sum it up, no, the graphics in WAR do not put me off, in fact I really dig em.

This has been my favorite for a while:
"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."
A game being in Beta is no excuse. Regardless of how much they improve the graphics before release, the basic over-all initial "feel" of it will still be the same. In the end, it all boils down to each individual's opinion of 'you love it or hate it'.
I played WoW in all resolutions, yes the game looks more clean and crisp, but nothing is going to change my opinion that it still has annoying goofy cartoony graphics. By saying higher resolution will significantly change the quality of the look and "feel" to it, you're basically sugar-coating a pile of shit and calling it candy.
For those who think looks doesn't matter, do you believe a ugly fat person with a heart of gold has the same chance of finding a date as a super-model with a heart of gold? Which one would you rather have? It's a matter of opinion, right?
"When you're born you're naked, when you die you're naked again, and in-between all we do is work, eat, and play MMOs." ~Forum Warrior #141
If the graphics look poor to some people, MAYBE they will quit playing when the first month is up. However, if the graphics look great but the gameplay suffers for it, EVERYONE will quit playing it after the first month is up. When people say graphics don't matter, they don't mean they would be happy playing a MUD. They are saying that graphics don't MATTER AS MUCH as gameplay, and they are right.
