Everything's inferior to D&D...especially second & first edition.  But if i let that keep me away from games I'd have nothing to do. :)

We've already seen what online versions of D&D come out like (coughs the word shiit) lol

Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!

Wow, this is really odd. a couple of months ago I made a post on here about the graphics and people upgrading their machines to have better graphics for Warhammer and I got flamed from every which way.

Now, there is an actual thread leading up to 7 pages long with more than 90% of the posters saying that one of the reasons they are not playing Warhammer online is because it looks like War of Worldcraft?

I guess opinions can change drastically when folks aren't busy brown nosing or blinded by forum rage.

I love the Warhammer universe and played Fantasy Battle and the RPG years ago.

The reason why I'm not planning to buy WAR is because gameplay, skils and character development only seem to be focused on combat. I'm waiting (and waiting...and waiting...) for a game with more fluff and depth. Where character development includes meaningful faction development, religion (based on and affected by player actions or inactions) and character skills that do more than just increase/decrease hitpoints/attributes.

As far as I know there isn't such a commercial game out at the moment, so I'm not playing an MMORPG at the moment. That's right! It can be done!

If I'm wrong about WAR or any other MMORPG not having the above features then please show me where to play.

(edited to add line breaks...did it work?)

Not fantasy in the specific sense, but Champions Online might suit that "custom built characters" need of yours in the not-so-near future.

We gotta wait for their announcement on crafting, which supposedly will be really cool and innovative (up to a certain point). I don't think you'll be surprised or even interested, though, since WAR's all about the combat, like every MMO out there. In any case, your idea of a new non-combat MMO is nice. Good luck getting someone to do it.

Most true WoW loving players whether former or not are not going to like WAR.  They are not going to like having to think of their Realm along with themselves.  They're not going to want to share in the fight or the glory.  They're not going to like that people who aren't hard core raiders & grinders will have the same oppertunities as them (just comparatively longer to reach those goals).    Most true WoW players arent' even looking at this game because its RvR based instead of Raid / Gear based.

But if we went by your logic alone then there'd be almost NO ONE left to play WAR since every single one of us has Tried the WoW experience at one point.  Even I Have..and I'll be honest I hated it.  I prefered EQ2 far more even though EQ2 ran like shit, looked like uber shit just to run, and this one is the kicker here...they FORCED grouping.  Instead of making it to where grouping was prefered naturally they forced it..and now..we've seen EQ2 slowly WoW o fied.  Though I hear it worked out really well for most.

I still don't see why it being classed base is the sole reason to shun the game.  Point systems are not that popular atleast not on the mainstream.   I played RPG's and D&D games for years and they were always class based so for me I prefer it.  I know my role and I get to customize my character according to my role.  Plus I dont have to spend X months + life span in order to get my character into battle ready conditions.  In UO and other skill games you pratically live in town for months before your able to protect yourself.  Point systems are naturally unbalanced when it comes to a vet vs a new player.    There's no real way to ever balance that.  Does it make it a crap system?  No just a different one.  I dont have X amount of years to devote to trying to get my toon somewhere so I can feel some level of acheivement.   I dont want things like right away served on a platter but I'd like to see and feel achievement faster than a point system allows.

Here is my rebutal for the comment on the balance issue. Yes a vet is going to beat a new player, but what  game have you played that isn't that way? In class base game the diffrence is levels, but in a class base game when you are at equal levels it becomes an issuse of class and gear that wins not skills. In games like UO it comes down too where you placed your points, and your knowledge in those skills that prevail.

Honestly, why haven't they made a sequel to UO? I would play the hell out of it if they did. I'd prefer pre-AoS, but even if it had item grinding I might consider it. I just can't understand why such a successful and critically acclaimed franchise hasn't put out a sequel. I guess they're too busy making lame ass Ninjas Versus Pirates expansions for the 1997 original...... *sigh*

How many different types of players can you try to please with one linear MMORPG before everyone has a mediocre experience?

Two rules to live by when making a MMORPG in the post WoW world.

    1. Pick a specific target audience and stick with them and don't pick the same audience as WoW because that's just stupid.

    2. If your aiming for the folks that are all WoW'd out then make sure the tedious crap in WoW isn't in your game too.

I don't really know if I won't play it, but as far as I have seen; it looks like I will stay with WoW / Ragnarok.

I'll be playing Aion. At first I had some interest in this game, but then after reading up about Aion I felt it would be a better game for me. I still wish success for WAR, and I hope it lives up to the hype.

I still support WAR and defend it cause of the ignorant gamers who don't research and bash it for idiotic reasons.

It seems a tad ridiculous and feels like a cry for attention to me.

well i had played UO for many years, and even though it was a skill based system, it came down to who had the best skills. people had play tested skills so much that you all basically used the same builds, essentially creating classes, some being fotm classes, ie casters wearing the plate suits, the mind blast builds (75/75/75)... the potential to be different definatly exists in skill based games, but at what costs? being gimped because you didnt pick the best skills? imo it only appears as if there are more choices in skill based games, you wouldnt want to pick meditation skill for a warrior type build...

also i plan on atleast giving the game a try, its not like anything better suited for my tastes is coming along anytime soon.

I won't be playing WAR because it is not my cup of tea, reminds me too much of WoW, and it is based on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay which I tried and found inferior to AD&D and others.

It's not based on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay...

    • World too generic, too boring. It's just a cartoony version of Forgotten Realms with a bit more aggression in it.
    • Pseudo PVP. I don't see a point playing a pvp game when you can't loot corpses, or just go out of town, build a camp and ambush travelers. Everything will be stupidly cumulative -- collect X of Y from corpses of these to launch a catapult, or collect X of Z from corpses to get a new piece of gear.
    • 2 fixed sides. Means no backastabbing between guilds, no guild vs guilds combat. You will share side with fixed races from the very beginning of the game, until the end. And don't tell me Warhammer Universe is build like that, because it isn't.
    • Combat is target lock crap. People would expect to see new ideas finally coming into MMORPG. But I guess companies are trying to copy Blizzard perfect idea to not come with anything new, just steal everything from past and make it look new.

    REALITY CHECK

  • ezzaezza Member Posts: 88

wether i play it really depends on a few things.

its release being pushed back is one major issue, if its not out when earthrise hits beta then WAR might miss the boat.

theres the possibility if WOTLK is awesome  then i might go back to WoW, though i doubt it, think the ship has sailed for me and that game.

beyond that none of the up coming releases MMORPG wise are that interesting to me so its mainly down to WAR to screw it up between now and release for me to really not play it.

of course if THQ and Virgil games can move there ass and provide more details about the warhammer 40k online game then i might be to busy drooling over that when it comes to release of WAR, though since they have not released any futher info since the tail end of last year i aint holding my breath.

as for all the its designed for WoW players, disagree there, if its so much like wow why would they move from WoW to WAR?

as for the graphics, who cares, as long as there decent, its the game play thats important and that is going to be the test as to how WAR succeds.

games can have great graphics but if the game aint up to much who will want to play it

    I "wont" be playing WAR;

Tired of the same level / class / gear based grind fest.

    waiting for Darkfall.

The game that has "advanced" classes or what have you? The same game that makes you "grind" to "level" your skills to 100? If "gear" doesn't make some difference, there would be no need to have it.

I wont be playing WAR cause:

    Cartoonish graphics.

For a game that is based on PvP theres no hardcore PvP elements.

Constant dropping of features, no mounted combat.

Combat is the same old boring thing, mark the target click the spell.

    Character animations that...uhm...suck

Unrealistic release dates that developers set even tho they aren't even being pushed by EA. I foresee 3 more date pushes at least.

I have been looking into it and i agree with most people. Hey WoW has a new expantion thats called warhammer .....    anyways i will try it out but most likely be playing requiem (which i am in beta or now and is great) or aion.  I am looking for a good game that has a good story, not another button mashings MMO where nothing is balanced in PvP and PvE is boring and easy.

Constant dropping of features, no mounted combat. They dropped mounted combat and added keeps to fight over. Where is the CONSTANT dropping of features? I think you might be thinking of AoC on this.

Combat is the same old boring thing, mark the target click the spell. Only DarkFall is trying different casting where you don't click and then click a spell, and it may never ever come out.

    I am the green obviously.

    Spot on!

This is exactly the reason why I wont be playing this game. Hated Mythic's ideas from day 1. It's a brutal murder of a great IP titel...
