I dont see how WoW (or really any EQ mould high fantasy MMO) is any less repetitive than CoX.

For me it comes down to the environments that you encounter and explore not being nearly varied enough.

Character generation and combat are quite a lot of fun in CoH, but that can only take me so far.  I'm too much of an explorer.  I rarely get any sense of wonder from the environments in CoH.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

i dont think this game is "repeating". People who say its repeating is probably refering to its earlier state, where missions were more or less the go-in-kill-everything style...  The game is receiving constant updates and newer content like the recent invasion.

That said, i dont think the studio will give up on CoH even when Champions is released. Both games are from the same studio and thus rivalry is not present.

    Ipod,

Cryptic Studio's, the developer of CoX, has sold the game to the Publisher NCSoft. Along with the sale of the IP and code, most of the developing team also were hired onto NCSoft.

So, when Champions does go online, there will be rivalry.

Too much instancing. Every freakin mission is instanced. I played the trial and quit after a couple days. It felt like a single box game with some hubs where people hung out and chatted. Not what I am looking for in a MMOG at all.

I don't think this would be a reason for a game to not be super big. Look at GW. Great game, fantastic graphics/soundtrack yet mostly instancing.

I think mostly that the game is a nitch game, based on superheroes. The fighting and costume creator are tops. I'll feel the grind but at the same time I've felt the grind in all the MMOs I've played.

You mention that it felt like people just hung out in a hub and chatted. I felt the same way in WoW. If i'm not running a raid, most people will be in the general chat gabbing away, swapping Chuck Norris jokes in the Barrens. Just a larger hub, but still a hub.

The reason so many mmo vets dislike the game is the simple fact that there is no real traditional itemization in the game. I know about 10 people personally who would come back in a heart-beat if they added "real loot" to the NPC tables. Everything else in the game is just amazing imo.

I dont find that to be an issue personally. The problem I always found with the game is the lack of things to do at lvl 50 aside from starting an Alt... which sometimes isnt always that fun.

"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."

People who complain about a lack of "real loot" obviously haven't played in some time.  With Issue 9 they added Inventions (crafting), so that now mobs drop invention salvage and recipes.  Certain recipes can only be acquired by winning a task/strike force.  Plus adding a Market really helped out players buying/selling.

Plus to keep the 50's entertained they added Flashbacks with Issue 11.  Now you can redo any mission you may have skipped due to outleveling or simply because you want to.   They recently added very rare 50 recipes to the game to give the more hardcore types something to grind for.  I personally, don't care to grind for them but that is just my preference.

Oh and I'm loving my villain epic AT too!

I loved the game...and still do.  In fact I am about to re open my accounts once me and the wife hit the limit on quests in AOC....we are at 51 so it will be soon.

The only thing I dont like in the game is the repetition.....the same quests over and over.  Aside from that...it is INCREDIBLE!!!

best animation and combat moves...they look great.  This game is really a gem.

Funny thing...the only reason I played it and fell in love is because some friends at work convinced me...and that wasn not easy.  I thought it would be stupid and boy was I wrong.

Anyway, it is a good game and the developers, Cryptic, are making another superhero game called Champions.  I will definitely buy that one as well as WAR.....aside from those games, I might buy AIon but I will be holding out for CRUSADES!!

its now because of the trials cap and other reasons

It's a nifty game but that's about it. Repatitions is a killer and all the quest are the same, they just change the mob names. If CoH/CoV didnt have such an amazing character design system the game would be uber sucky. The crafting is a joke and needs some inspiration. LIke I said best part of the game is making a new toon then it just gets stale from there..

I know for me, it was the one game I have never complained about, like i never got passed level 18 in the game, but i loved it.

I dont know what it was though, i could just never get into  the later levels. I think it was because I never joined a supergroup or had any friends that played the game except say one person. Everyone else was too wrapped up in fantasy games.

Ive made it a goal of mine to get passed level 30 in Champions online. I just loved playing it because I loved the customizing options, and the way the fighting looked. Sadly though there was never a carrot to make me keep playing as the levels got passed 15, i just didnt see any great things coming up like player housing, or vehicles or anything.

I hear this a lot that the missons are repetative.  If you think about it all MMO's have "repetative" missions.  I  mean in WoW all quests are either Kill X mobs , Collect Y items or Kill Boss Z... so they "only" have 3 kinds of quest the game must suck.   (last sentence was full sarcasm in case you missed it)

We got the new roman themed zone in Issue 12, random invasions outdoors by Rikti from Issue 10, revamped Hollows now, they redone Faultline... the list goes on.  Heroes at higher levels have the Shadow Shard too, which I believe is terribly underused as I enjoyed those story arcs immensely.  My scrapper did most of his 41-50 stuff in Shadow Shard and Praetorians.

Plus when Issue 10 went live some of the missions with Lost have a few... surprises for you.

Of course my SG has a base, which is kinda like personal housing.  We have med bay, crafting tables, telelporters, storage, etc.   Basically a lot of quality of life features.  If someone was SG-less, they would be missing out on a significant portion of content.

I have been playing off and on for a long time now, mostly off. I haven't gotten above level 20 with any character yet and I would consider myself a pretty hardcore MMO player.

The combat is fun, but at the same time repetitive. I start out a new character and have loads of fun until level 10 or so when it starts to taper off.  I think this is true for most MMO games,  but working towards the next piece of gear alleviates  this feeling for me in other MMOs, but that doesn't happen in CoX, which is by design, and I do praise them for being different, but I lose interest.

Missions are similar, they are fun at first but feel very repetitive to me after only a short time playing, the same or similar enemies each encounter, with similar maps, its just not fun.

Another major turnoff to me is the fact there are certain specs that are considered to be "Uber" and others are seemingly gimped in comparison. If I want to play a super hero character I want to be able to play him with abilities that I find interesting or fun, and not find myself limited to certain choices because I will be less stellar in one aspect of the game or another compared to "cookie cutter" specs. This problem is not exclusive to CoX though.

I love the concept behind the game, and am sure I would love the PVP aspect if I was ever high enough to participate in it, but sadly the game doesn't manage to hold my attention long enough to allow me to.

  • YeeboYeebo Member UncommonPosts: 1,361

I tend to stall out at in the late teens once I have all my core abilities slotted out with DOs.  Usually the stuff I'll be subbing in once I get to SOs isn't really going to help my powers out that much.  I also find that the pace at which i get new abilities I'm excited about starts to slow around then.

That said, I'm actually pretty excited about the power diversification.  There were a lot of cool concepts I never got to roll before.  I'm planning to fire up CoX for my usual "month or two until I get bored" some time soon to check it out.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

I beta tested then bought the game and have played off and on for about 6-8 months.

When the game originally came out heroes were powerful they could do so much,  then instead of focusing on proper content and upgrades they spent a year on nurfing characters.  If at any time a nice character build came out  of the woodwork they destroyed it.

They could have made ALOT of money out of this game, but trying to nurf things drove people away instead of them staying and making it harder for them to complete content.

It was the Arrogance of statesman the guy who ran off to start champions or some such, sometimes the people who build the game aren't the best ones to run it. This case is one such time.

  • VortigonVortigon Member UncommonPosts: 723

This game will never be big because its TOO damn repetitive, the rest of the game is fun.  I love playing ti for about 3 weeks then its complete boredom.

Not enough variety of content, and the Devs are too lazy to add anything to a relatively old game like this.

  • DrowNobleDrowNoble Member UncommonPosts: 1,297

Bleh I hate repeating myself, but here goes....

The people that are claiming the game is repetative have either (1) not played in a while or (2) haven't gotten passed 20.  The RWZ and new Roman zone are for 35-50.  Striga and Croata are for those 20+ hero side.  You honestly can't make an informed claim about the game if you haven't even seen 70% of the content.  They added Mayhem missions for villains and Safeguard for heroes to break up this supposed "repetativeness" everyone talks about.  You don't like kidnap/rescue missions?  Then don't DO them!  The game allows you to drop a mish every 3 days, not only for the rare bugged mish but for the "I don't want to do this" mish too.

Plus with inventions, you don't have to wait til 12 and slot DO's.  You can start as early as level 10 and the 10ish IO's are relatively inexpensive.  They are much better than DO's anyways and at higher levels IO's surpass SO's as well.

So Roman Zone, Rikti Zone, Flashback missions, Inventions, Villain Epic AT , etc. just isn't enough for you?  If all that is the devs being "lazy" I hope they never get "busy" I'll never have enough time to do anything....

The last time I played was about this time last summer, oddly.  I didn't really care for the safequard missions, I found the invisible walls in most of the zones made them hard to navigate.  I never tried the Havoc missions villain side.  I liked the invention system, but at the levels I was playing I used it mainly as an extra stream of inf so I could get my slots filled out quicker.

I am actually planning to re-sub some time soon.  Having to get to 35 on the villian side to see less repetitive zones seems a bit much, honestly.  However,  I'll definitely get one of my heroes to 20 this time around so that I can at least check out Striga and Croatia.

I played this game for two years. Started a year before CoV and ended a year after. Back then, the game was huge. Tons of people, supergroups etc. but that ended and the reason is simple, no end game content.

Once you hit the cap, you could either grind for worthless badges or restart with a different character. Everyone pretty much had a server full of lvl 50 alts after several months of playing (depends on how much time you spent in game.)

The devs also ruined the game by constantly making classes weaker, instead of giving us tougher enemies. May be if we had more than one raid, there wouldn't be any lvl 50 fire tanks power leveling people, because they would be too busy doing their own lvl 50 stuff.

In the end, the best thing about CoX was character creation, but the rest of the game was stale, repetitive and un-rewarding. I go back every now and then, and sadly, after a few days of playing, it feels boring and unchaged.

Well with Issue 12 you can start Midnight Squad missions earlier, just can't get to do the Roman missions til 35.  I think the Origin of Power can be done at 10, not sure since I didn't have any toons that low when I did it.

Some people like grinding badges at 50, that's what they enjoy.  Myself, I will "grind" for salvage.  With the invention system more and more people are going that route for enhancements.  What my 50 does is drops the SO's in base storage for our lowbies to take out and sell, that way no begging for inf from the higher ups.  If I need magic salvage I just do missions with carnies, CoT's, etc.

There is more than one raid for those that want it.  Hami has two versions, hero and villain side.  RWZ has a raid to take on the mothership itself.  Reason there aren't more raids is that isn't what most of the playerbase wants.  Coop zones and crafting were the 2 big things most players enjoyed and wanted so that is what they put in.

Yes, a lot of the new content is 35+ unless you are hero side where Striga is 20+, so someone who doesn't have a toon 20+ will make claims the game is repetative and stale.  They did revamp Hollows for your lowbies, if you're a hero.  Also, they smoothed out the xp curve so  you don' have those slow dead levels where you seem you're going uphill to level.

I played, quit, played, quit, played, quit and came back again a couple months ago, I got 7 50s (with 1 on the way) and I don't plvl, only bridge when there are no teams in PI actually lookin to mish instead of farm and the one thing the game is is repetative, its the same groups, on the same tilesets, I will say tho its a "soft grind" because the gameplay is inherently enjoyable. Power proliferation and i/os are ok, but most pp sets are just recombinations of old sets, the new ones are cool tho, especially db and wp.  I/os? basically created a hard grind aspect to the game by making people actually need inf, instead of the good ol days when it was just for giving away to lowbies or costume contests. It also replaced the reasonably sized farmer population with a tidal wave of firekins in overalls. I/Os aren't even really worth it  til 50 imo unless unique, but to answer the OPs question:

    1) Nerfs-They're nerfing my wp/em tank even as we speak.

    2) lack of shelf presence and marketing

    3) limited endgame (used to be basically none, so thats an improvement )

...but if they nerf my 50 wp/em (my pvp toon and my favorite) I would have to quit for good, especially since its one of the few ATs that can hold its own solo in RV against more than 1 attacker (properly slotted).

Ya, they punked me. ET  is a joke now. 2 slow attacks do me no good in RV, especially with the previous damage nerf appearing even more pronounced. The extra almost 2 seconds and stun nerf makes it too easy for even squishy vills to self heal or phase or whatever. When I think of the time, and the hundreds of millions of inf spent just to compete, and then actually lvling a farmer (so far to 43) to feed my wp tank for the hundreds of millions more I needed to do him up right. 93 wasted lvls, and all this after they promised way back when, "no more nerfs". Bastards. I haven't logged back in since I logged in to test it in RV,  and banter in broadcast in PI about it an hour after I posted here, and haven't even had the desire to.
