I look at the hype meter and see that the two games I was really looking forward to, Jumpgate Evolution and Earthrise, had fallen off the top 5. So I look at Jumpgate hype, which for some reason had been dropping slowly lately, but I wasn't really surprised it was off the top 5. Then I look at Earthrise, and it amazingly has plummeted by almost .2 points since the Darkfall video came out. Than I see the last two comments are "Darkfall is better anyway" and "DF rulez".
Honestly, are they now trashing all the other games along with hyping theirs so that it makes it to the top?
Still amazes me that genuinely unique games can't make it on the hype meter yet every been there done that game such as WAR and every other boring fantasy level based game gets major hype. (Not talking about Darkfall here, that game has some promise if it ever actually releases)

Yes actually they are.
-its fully listed out in the Darkfall official forums that they are hyping up their game while de-hyping others-
Don't you guys know, 10 year old gameplay/graphics totally rulez and totally deserves to mark down other games.
Wow... thats just sad... You would think they would be smart enough to not trash similar games like Earthrise....

You should do what most people here do and simply ignore the hype meters to death.
It's nothing but fanboy material. The meters on mmorpg.com sadly have never given a good representation of the actual hype for an MMO.
Because this is so different than people saying "lol vaporwarez" and giving it a 1 without ever really reading up on the game right?
Please.
Do you know what "hype" is? It looks to me like when the DF video came out, it got a lot of people interested in the game, and also cause passed naysayers to change their hype to a 10 from a 1...which is why it jumped up so much.
"Hype" would also mean that the meter is refelecting how much fan loyalty is behind DF since they care about it. There are something like 2k - 3k votes on the DF hype meter...while other games have only 200 or so that are hovering around the 7.00 mark.

I am a darkfall fan and I dont dehype games that look good. I have given earhtrise and jumpgate high marks. The other games that are competing for the top however look like crap to me so I have makes them low accordingly.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
gotta love when people make points like this. gameplay being dated and 10 years old? how can gameplay be old especially in an mmorpg. I guess that means war and WoW have even older gameplay since they have perfected what EQ1 started doing.
Big compliment that now instead of calling it vaporwarez, people are attacking it for having "dated gameplay". Hmm guess i should not buy Madden 09' because the gameplay is so old...i mean there were football games on the atari for crying out loud!

Sounds like they arent interested in those games then huh? Which is what hype would be trying to measure...
If the games you are talking about have enough hype to be on there, im sure its fanbase will hype it up more. DF's hype has gone up in huge amounts the last week, and i guarentee you that is not because of some plan on the official forums alone...it is because people are actually seeing the video, reading up on it, and discovering a game they would like.

Thank you personal defender of Darkfall, you know everything. I'm sure the hype has gone up not because people are finding out about darkfall, but because they saw the video and thought "OMG IT EXISTS!"

Gameplay can be old due to poor animations and clunky looking combat, it looks rediculous. Something like a Quake mod =/. Heck there are better animated FPS mods for hl2 with completely custom models by amateur developers.
It isn't the system itself, it's how it looks.
And to be honest, i was being sarcastic in my first post because of the darkfall fans behaviours and excuses.
Graphics aren't important! gameplay is!
Gameplay isn't important! The systems in the world is!
and yes, There is a difference to marking down darkfall because of vaporware, and marking down another game so another has higher hype.
It's a dirty sleezy tactic to present a false hype ratio.
Sounds like this has more to do with graphics and animations to me.

Yup you are 100% correct. Since people cant seem to fathom the limitations of an indy developer...and since AoC and D&L have touched so many gamers in the wrong places...a lot of the community just wrote DF off and hyped it down accordingly without even waiting to see if it pulled through.
So yea, now that others who needed proof that DF existedn have gotten it, they have certainly hyped it up accordingly....because...that is what the hype meter is measuring!!!
sounds like everything is working as intended.

The Hype score is computed dynamically. One game's score CAN have an effect on all game Hype scores. Also the population of scores for one single game does not matter for the overall Hype rating. A game with fewer scores has as much weight as does a game with many scores. A game rated highly with fewer scores will show up higher in the Hype ratings than a game rated lower with many scores. A good example of this is Shadow of Legend. Thus one person's Hype score for a less popular game has more weight than their score for a more popular game.
www.mmorpg.com/faq.cfm/showFaq/15
"The scores on the game list all just drastically changed, what is happening?
We use a curving system to generate our game ranks (only for released games). Because the natural scores of our games tend to range in the 4.5-6.5 range we utilize a positive only curve for our game scores that adds to every score, but more to the games with naturally higher scores. This allows the games to stay in the same relationship and ranking with each other while giving the scores more depth and spread. The curve derives its multiplier based on how far below a "perfect 10" the number 1 game currently is. When a new game just comes out and it is getting a very high natural score, this shrinks the curve multiplier, causing every game on our list to fall in score (although they are still higher than their natural score is).
The exact formula we use for this curve is shown below:
Assume we have the following sample games. Their "natural" scores are shown here (the exact average of users scores)
* Super Ninjas II 6.5
* Dead Quest - 5.5
* MMO Junkyard - 2.5
* Zombie Hunters - 4.3
* Buggy Assault - 5.0
STEP 1: Determine the highest game score in the list. This would be "Super Ninjas II" which has a 6.5 score.
STEP 2: Find the value half way between a perfect 10 and the top rated game. This would be 10 minus 6.5 divided by 2 then add 6.5 or ((10 - 6.5)/2) + 6.5. This value is 8.25.
STEP 3: Now find the value that you would have to multiply the #1 game by to reach this magic 8.5 number. The formula for this is 8.5 divided by 6.5 or 8.5/6.5 - which is 1.30769. This is our curve mulitplier.
STEP 4: Lastly, you multiply every score by the curve multiplier (1.30769). This means that games with larger natural scores will get a bigger boost that those with naturally lower scores.
Using the above steps our list now becomes this (also now sorted from high to low):
* Super Ninjas II 8.5 (increased 2.0)
* Dead Quest - 7.2 (increased 1.7)
* Buggy Assault - 6.5 (increased 1.5)
* Zombie Hunters - 5.6 (increased 1.3)
* MMO Junkyard - 3.3 (increased 0.8)
As you can see, the above list ends up being a lot funner to look at that the first one. The scores are spread further apart, while no game is penalized (in fact, all get some kind of increase from the curve). However, getting to the answer to the original question of "Why do all the scores crash all at once?!".
What happens is a new game releases and gets a fresh start on our list. There is a lot of excitement and fans are giving the game really good natural scores. This will typically produce a game with a much higher natural score than the rest of the back. Let's use the very top list as a reference. Now, let's suppose that "Demongate Cincinatti" hits store shelves and MMORPG.com users are giving it a 8.5 natural score within the first few days of release. Our list would start like this:
* Super Ninjas II 6.5
* Dead Quest - 5.5
* MMO Junkyard - 2.5
* Zombie Hunters - 4.3
* Buggy Assault - 5.0
* Demongate Cincinnati - 8.5
Using the curve algorythm shown above we would now get our curve multiplier from ((10-8.5)/2) + 8.5 = 9.25 (new top score) which reduces the multiplier to 1.08823. This will drastically change the new scores. See below:
* Demongate Cincinnati - 9.3 (increased 0.8)
* Super Ninjas II 7.1 (increased 0.6)
* Dead Quest - 6.0 (increased 0.5)
* Buggy Assault - 5.4 (increased 0.4)
* Zombie Hunters - 4.7 (increased 0.4)
* MMO Junkyard - 2.7 (increased 0.2)
And just like that, one game completely changes the scores on the entire list. Now, normally shortly after a new game launches things will settle down and the scores will stabilize. It is just important to remember that no matter what, the score you see is actually higher than the real score of the game...so for fans angry that their favorite MMORPG just lost half a point, remember that without this curve the score would be even lower ;-)"
Reread your post you toitally contradict yourself, the systems make the gameplay same thing. I guess they could go to the AOC model beef up the graphics and have 6 people in 40 instances instead of 240 on one !!!
Think on ....

If Darkfall was in the top 5 simply because it's hype had gotten pushed high enough, that would be one thing. But the only reason it is in the top 5 is because DF fans purposefully trashed the other games ratings to get darkfall up there. That isn't right. They did to those other games exactly what the people you are complaining about did to Darkfall. But to you, when people trashed darkfall they were wrong and stupid, but when darkfall fans trash everything else to help darkfall, it's working as intended. Typical fanboy.
(Btw I didn't rate Darkfall until I actually saw anything substantial about it)

Sorry didn't say that, as much as you would like me to have. I just compared the two acts as being the same, which you just agreed that they are. Marketing is one the most cutthroat businesses out there, trust me i work in it so i know. Not saying one side is stupid and the other isnt, im just saying it happens on both ends and in my opinion DF has gotten it way worse.
By the way read up a few posts on the member who took a lot of time to explain the hype system to you, i think you would benefit from understand it a bit more.

Oh wow! 240 in one! that's such a shock, i mean like, this is impossible for any game to do. zomgz, let's go back to 10 yr old graphics so we can handle this!
for a FPS(which is what darkfall is right? or is it now a racing game?). It looks clunky, i can't say if it plays clunky, i got bored watching the vid so i may have missed someone actually playing it, since gods eye staged vids simply aren't that interesting.
It looks clunky, the battles look clunky, the models look clunky, the attacks look clunky, everything looks clunky and old.
If you say it doesn't your jaded.
Heck i'd say wow LOOKS better, and it was released 4 years ago, and people said it looked old when it was new.
How much of a exception are you going to make for a game you want?
A game is a game is a game.
It doesn't matter if 1 guy made, 10 guys made it, or 100 guys made it.
Guess there are tens of thousands of jaded people out there....ever think that your opinion may be in the minority?
Clunky. Sorry i like saying this word and I dont feel it has been used enough in this thread.

I don't see the big deal.
Politicians continually bash their opponents, despite the qualities that their respective opponents may have.
Sure, other games may not be bad, but you can't blame Darkfall followers for understanding the system and knowing how to raise their game's hype level to gain recognition.
As far as Darkfall goes, as a game, it's not perfect but it's closer to perfect than any other MMORPG since PRE-UOR. Every other MMO since EQ has been a clone of the same grind-and-find system that is boring and pointless.
It's time the real MMO vets took back the very genre of gaming that they helped create.
MMORPGs don't belong to the carebears it belongs to the roughneck hardcore veterens of the 20th century.
