Top 3 most dissapointing MMORPGs

Before posting my disappointments, just a couple of things:

WoW was a groundbreaking release that got almost everything right and is practically universally acclaimed as being the grand daddy of them all; how can you call this "disappointing"?

Secondly, what puts LOTRO on a par with WoW is the fact that it uses pretty much the same engine. What sets it apart from WoW is the lush landscapes, beautiful cities, slightly deeper crafting system, more mature community (by far), a variety of deeds to do, great music and atmosphere, absence of 40-man raids requiring huge investments of time (often with no rewards), a lack of corrupt guilds...and the list could go on!

ANYWAY, onto my disappointments (I shall announce the results in reverse order):

3rd Biggest Disappointment - Hellgate London - Repetitive gameplay and bugs was the main game-breaker here. Lack of a variety of toolsets didn't help. There was no crafting (as far as I recall). Everything just seemed so mechanical. I never got the Diablo "vibe" that it purported to be - hence the disappointment.

2nd Biggest Disappointment - Age Of Conan - Really like Tortage; loved the pirate island / adventure playground feel. Wasn't too happy with load screens. This, ultimately, was my reason to stop though. For me, the world opened up too much after Tortage giving the player TOO MUCH choice; there was too much zone hopping required - with yet more loadscreens! Never got the hang of the stats for equipment. The world map was very badly designed in my opinion. Instancing was fiddly. Disappointing because it really did promise so much.

Biggest Disappointment - Guild Wars - Felt empty and lonely. Music was just dreary, making the atmosphere actually quite depressing. Movement was terrible and felt very restrictive. Hated how you couldn't run up a small incline so had to run round a long distance.  Gameplay was TOO linear. Inventory was awful - no sound, no "clunk" or "ting" when moving items around. Never really got used to the towns being the small "all players together and communicating" bit, while the instancing outside was the "open world" bit where you communicated with very few players. - Biggest disappointment because it happened to be the game purchased after the mind-blowing excellence of WoW.

    Thus ends my twopenny worth.

    1) AC2 - Nothing like AC. I quit playing after 2 weeks.
    2) DDO - I didn't even bother buying it once they announced there was no explorable world, and there was zero solo play. I've sinced tried it, and remain unimpressed.
    3) Vanguard - It was suppose to be the true sequel to EQ. Instead, it was a complete bomb. Its too much like EQ2, imo.

    Other worthy mentions:
EQ2 - At launch this game was complete crap. Once they saw that WoW was a solo fest they attempted to copy it. EQ2 never had an identity, imo.
Horizons - A joke on the MMO world. A very bad one, too.

I really Liked Horizons,  Just wish it had a purpose other than a craftng fest.

    But for my list.

    1. Wow

    2. AoC

    3. Tabula Rasa - I really hoped this game would have been great, but well there was no point at the end other than to grind.  I just hope Stargate Worlds is better, as it has the same feeling as TR did.

    1. RYL 2 - it was supposed to be the improved version of RYL but it got everything wrong and even couldn't keep the very thing that made RYL1 great, what a shame though.

    2.  Hellgate London - Well i thought it could be the diablo series just in modern times, and with vivid GFX, it failed badly, and showed how horrible a team can become if they don't have the blizzard whip behind them. What blizzard had trademarked very well, polish and quality, didn't exist in this game.

    3. AoC -did however improve., But at it's time as it should have impressed you to keep subbing, it failed badly, not to mention the shitty support. It lacked polishment in many ways too, it had such great potential but Failcom never utilized them.

    And just for pointing out.

Though it might just be your own opinions, i am still surprised people even put WoW on those lists, it's not a failure of a game compared to others, i guess i was right marking mmorpg.com as the number 1 site for WoW haters, hilarious thought.

    But to each their own.

    Personal experience-wise:

    1.) Age of Conan

    2.) Vanguard

    3.) RYL

I can't say WoW was a disappointment since despite my grudges towards it I had a great time with the people I played with.

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

    1.  CoH - Thought it was such a cool concept when I saw it in the shop.  Got it home and found the gameplay to be boring, shallow and repetitive.

    2.  Guild Wars Factions  - Loved the first GW but found this to be pretty dull and unimaginative.  Really disappointed me.

    3.  Eve - Just wasn't as good as I thought it would be.  I love space games but the point and click battles really turned me off it and I didn't like the training system much.  I don 't think it's a bad game but after everything i'd heard about it and coming off the back off 1 year playing 'Freelancer' online I expected a lot more.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495

    1. DDO

    2. AoC

    3. LotRO

  • chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

WAR - for such a massive fan of the table top game this MMO blows IMO. I have never quit an MMO in the first month including the sad ones.

Lotro - Feel  a bit guilty on this one as I only played the trial but I just didnt feel it and once again I am a big fan so I thought it would be a hit.

Vanguard - Played for 6 months still because I liked crafting and my guild were fun on TS.  The bugs, lag, lack of population and the rest just dragged it into the pit.

I would have stuck AoC up there about 6 weeks ago but since the last patch I am fully back in and it seems many others feel the same way as its quite obvious population is going up.

    1) AoC - Never in the field of mmorpg  was so many lies and empty promises made by so few to so many.

    2) Tabula Rasa - the title says it all.

3)DDO - the greatest fantasy lore wasted in deeps of instanced dungeons in instanced world.

    1. WoW

    2. WAR

Don't really have a third, and I guess those two aren't that bad, just really not my play style at all. Though I do agree that WAR was way overhyped and it's crappy WoW with some extra PvP.

EQ2 -something is so wrong with that game.

LOTRO- to be fair I was hoping it was an AC2, didn't really go much on a LOTRO ip anyway.

People have put WoW incidentally because WoW has been a disappointment to them. Was tempting to put it for me personally too but to be fair it wasn't a disappointment to me until a couple months in and then I just see disappointing elements of it rather than the game being a 'disappointment'.

Mr galad2003, eventho AOC phailed, Longest Journey and Dreamfall still are the best PC games as far as adventure games goes. I mentioned those 2 non-MMO games because you said "Funcom".

I would have to go with:

    1. AOC

    2. Pirates of the Burning Sea

    3. WAR

I guess my other mentions would be:

    1. Matrix Online

    2. EQ2

    3. Final Fantasy XI (I really didn't like the play shift from the FF consoles to this gameplay. I never even finished FF12 after seeing how they did the combat in that game.)

    1) SWG (the game launched and ran through episodes 1-3 releasing and should've done better, but was botched by SOE.  How they managed to fumbled one of the strongest IP's ever... who knows?)

    2) Tabula Rasa  (hope for a good sci-fi game vanished at launch.  underwhelming.  Richard who?)

    3) AoC (probably the most overhyped game in history.  went along with a nice flame-war with WAR fans. launch was worse than Windows Vista)

    ...

Other future, current, potential, or previous let downs of various measures.

WAR isnt' everything I expected either, to be honest.

LotRO ended up being too carebear/pve oriented for my liking.  A CoH/CoV type of split should've been considered for the lines between good/evil in this game, too.  Then gradually letting them live together and have open world PvP eventually.

Hellgate: London... loved the concept of a 'modern' (slightly futuristic) game based in a 'real world' setting.  WTF happened with this game?  Probably the same thing that will happen to Huxley, tbh.

Dark Fall/Fallen Earth/Earth Rise... should merge somehow.  In some odd way, they are bound.

Star Trek is now going to battle with SW:TOR.

Chronicles of Spellborn will be the next Saga of Ryzom.

Jumpgate Evolution will reveal it's true identify as a spin-off Dance Dance Revolution MMO after it loses it's competitive edge and basis for the IP to Stargate Worlds.

Stargate Worlds will be a blend of Tabula Rasa + a lot of good stuff.  Let's just hope there isn't much of that Tabula Rasa feel in there and it doesn't overwhelm the flavor of the good stuff.

SUN... seriously.  That's the whole name?  Is this game about using a magnifying glass on various virtual items to see what kind of mayhem you can cause?  Or is this about harmful UV rays?

Second Life... has no business being listed as an MMO.  Please list MySpace and FaceBook and all of the old AOL Chatrooms... and maybe the Yahoo! chat client, too (with avatar).  I don't see Hello Kitty listed here... wtf?

MapleStory.  I love Canada, too.  When do the other countries get their own MMO's?  And, what tree's or syrup flavors might they be named after?

Age of Conan . . . All the more disappointing because Funcom should have learned so much from Anarchy Online, not just its failures but its many eventual successes. How could we not expect something more ambitious than AO for their followup offering? But even the things Funcom has proposed for the distant future are less sophisticated than stuff they added to AO years ago.

Pirates of the Burning Sea . . . I never really got as far as the sailing. They lost me at the swordfighting on the boats and the running around in cities. Here they were with all this hype and all these innovations and Sony behind them, and the control of basic human forms in the most ordinary environments possible are more awkward and stilted than anything out there, present or past. And that counts the Earth & Beyond beta. This is the one game I would not try again even if you installed it for me and paid for it.

Asheron's Call 2 . . . My favorite game of all time - destroyed by unfettered cheating, a chat system that somehow broke several months after launch, Turbine's foolishness in the face of the problem, and Microsoft's terrible act of apparent decency in allowing them to walk off with the rights to the game and go independent. Three months after releasing an expansion pack Turbine announced the game would be shutting down, and three months after that the servers were turned off - on New Year's Eve, if I remember correctly. Turbine will not discuss with anyone any path to reviving the game, and their website treats it as if it never existed.

All the recent MMOs have been a let down, starting with D&D online, then Vanguard, AoC, WAR

I guess LOTRO is okay. I can't seem to get a character over level 30 though.

  • UbieUbie Member Posts: 185

    1. Aoc.........Nice graphics, but the rest was...........well.........crap.

    2. Vanguard.........Over-hyped and released about a year too soon.

    3. Tabula Rasa........Poor gameplay.

  • xzyaxxzyax Member Posts: 2,459

    1. Dark and Light ... The grand-daddy of using the word potential. Never even came close to realizing it though.

    2. Age of Conan ... A close second to DnL. Perhaps with a different management team and 6 more months of dev. time... it would have realized some of it's potential.

    3. Tabula Rasa ... Probably marks the end for me with Richard Garriot games. Just not sure how he thought this game was ready to release.

A quick tally of the top 10 scoring titles that are the biggest disappointments. Only counted games once per post even if they had them in all 3 slots. Only counted games listed in the 1-3 slots even if they listed more.  Just did a quick count by tally-sheet... so chill if it's not 100% accurate.

    10.  Dark and Light - 10

    9.   World of Warcraft - 15

    9.  Pirates of the Burning Sea - 15

    8.  Dungeons & Dragons Online - 16

    7.  Lord of the Rings Online - 17

    6.  Everquest 2 - 19

    5.  Star Wars / Star Wars NGE - 20  (10 votes each... put it tied with DnL if you disagree putting them together).

    4.  Tabula Rasa - 24

    3.  WarHammer Online - 37

    2.  Vanguard - 38

and the biggest disappointment of MMORPG's among mmorpg.com users...

    1.  Age of Conan - 64  (Far and away the "winner" in this list)

Found it funny/odd that very few games escaped at least a vote or two by someone.  A couple noticeable absences were:

    Asheron's Call

    Dark Age of Camelot

    Ultima Online

    ShadowBane

    PlanetSide

There were others not mentioned as well from the left-side column... but those that I mentioned above were the ones that I remember playing and so it was interesting to not see them on the list.  I guess that's a good thing... even though they are all older games and pretty long in the tooth.

    1.Dofus
-this piece of sh*t claims to be excellent tactical mmorpg, and the screens for some reason look before playing, but beware this game isn''t worth touching even if you got the money for premium.
    Features of uselessness
1.No Army-WTF did my entire force just leave before game even started, last time I checked 99% of TRGs let you have an army of cool classes.
2.Below Average graphics-They suck, and are  even worse then a normal TRPG.
3.Premuim Area-What, the you mean I can't explore most of this demeaning game without a premium account, screw you!
    4. Limited Class selection- ya know most TRGs are known for like 16+ classes, this game barely has 5 and at that they are still uninteresting, oh yeah I'm pretty sure their no class changing either, what a rip-off.

    Next Game-
    2.Magic World Online
This game seems to play like a diablo clone, but I soon I'll disetch it and tell you whats wrong.
    The Features of Uselessness
1.File Size-Huge 2G, and for what?! Some sub-par graphics and poor gameplay?!
    2. Out of Date-I think game was in beta when I played, I mean WTF beta in 2007?! Your making a game this cheap in this day and age, c'mon almost every F2P game looks better than this.
    3. Combat animation-lacking-boring, uninteresting combat animations that are repettve and equally lame make this game horrible.
4.Lack of things to do-so far this game just seems like buy items and kill monsters, what fun...
    5. Everyone is exactly the same-For a 2GB game, you might expect a massive awesome detailed, character creation process, but no you pick a class, a name and boom your in, wasted.
6.Diablo Just did so much better-Everything in this game has been done 10 years ago by diablo 1 and 2, and they mangaged to do it much more effectively.

    Finally the worse mmorpg is-
    3.Sword of Solstice-
Looking for Ragnorak Online? Well this isn't but they made sure to steal its graphics.
    The features of Uselessness-
1.Ragnorak Rip-Off-Judging by the graphics, this game has taken some of source for Ragnorak Online, and released it 4 years later without improving a thing.
2.Lets Quest-Wow, questing is like freaking chores, and seems to never end, seriously when am I gonna be able to beat up a dragon or something?
3.The Level Up Booth- How wonderful, leveling doesn't come just from beating stuff up, instead your get exp from the those retarded quests *cough chores*, and go to level up booth, how fun!
    4. Attack of the clones- Prepare to see lots you running around since theirs almost no character customization.
    5. Even if this game was good...- it takes too long to get through all stupidity that drains all hope for the game.

There you are my top 3 worst mmorpgs, feel free to use this topic to submit your own.

You judge a game that you played for 20 mins? Dofus is a great Tactical game.

    1. Tactical does not mean you get to control an army instead in dofus you have to work with other players and use tactics, this is not a single player game you can team up with other players you know...

    2. The graphics are based on taste some people will like them some will not, they are not crap they are just diffrent.

    3. How else will a game make money? premium area better then cash shop.

    4. 5?? where the hell did you get that number Dofus has 12 classes
