When you want to upgrade your console, whats the price? When you want to upgrade your PC, whats the price? See you can upgrade a computer by part, but you cannot do that with a console.
Well... Let's see... I normally do an upgrade ever two to three years. Normally it's just additional memory and a graphics, but every four years I have to do a full overhaul since I have to change out the motherboard and CPU, which also means all new memory. The cost of the two year upgrade is generally between $150 to $200. The five year overhaul will usually land at around $300 to $400. That's about $600 over the course of five years unless I change something else like the the optical drive or hard drive. Let's just say between $600 and $800. Keep in mind that I build my computer according to the recommended spec of the games that I want to play. Right now, the highest end game I want to play is Dawn of War 2, so my computer is tweeked to that.  If I made my computer without gaming in mind, I could probably spend about half of that.
The average lifespan of a console is five years. I generally wait a year rather than buy a console at launch, so I spend about $300 on a new console. That comes to $300 every five years. Now if we couple that with a non-gaming PC we get the same cost as my current gaming PC. I get the best of both worlds with none of the bullshit that comes with PC gaming.
I play maybe at most, 5 games in a cycle. But if I wanted to play another game, if it wasn't an MMO, I could for free with ease. A console game is 50 bucks a pop or a minimum of 2 bucks to rent per day, sometimes a tad less in certaina areas.
You're forgetting used games and rental set ups like Gamefly where I can rent for less than 50 cents a day. You can neither rent PC games nor purchase them used. And I'm not even going to touch the piracy thing since it's only a plus if you think it's okay to steal shit.
I have a friend who is a semi console junky who owns well over 100+ xbox 360 games and just purchased a Wii. He has easily spent more money on his console that I have ever spent on anything.
Yeah, he bought games.  The money you spend on your game rig is money that you spend on hardware. He's actually playing games while you're out shopping for the next graphics card you're going to plug into your tower.
seriously. A console hobby is one of the most expensive, next to gambling.
I spend about $30 a month on games alone for my consoles. That's across seven platforms: XBox, XBox 360, PSP, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Gamboy Advance, Gamecube, and Wii.

    Dingdingding we have a winner.

The only real thing consoles have over PCs is that you can rent a game before buying it. Also, you can go to your nearest gaming store and trade in your console games for credit or something. Can't do that with PCs.

Eh..hmm..Yes, I know that. That is not the issue. The issue is that almost no games utilize them. You even said so yourself a few posts earlier. Jeez...Shouting doesn't make you more right either. You should think you figured that out by now.

Anyway, the lines getting more and more blurry the longer I look at it. Consoles are like mini-pc's now, allthough you can't upgrade them like a pc, and let's not forget the most important issue, no mmo's. It's just not viable on the consoles.

I can't watch TV while playing on a console.

    Console:
    1) I buy, or rent, a game.
    2) I turn on the console, put the game in and the game runs.
    3) If I'm on XBox live, I may have to download a patch, but that normally doesn't take more than three minutes tops and then I'm playing the game.
    PC (retail):
    1) I buy, becuase you can't rent, a game.
    2) I turn on my PC, put the game in and the autorun begins begins the installation wizard.
    3) I am then required to aggree to an End User License Agreement before the game asks me to enter a 25 digit alphanumeric key located on the CD sleave / case.
    4) At this point, the game begins installing. If I'm lucky, the install will take about ten minutes.
    5) If I'm not lucky, the install will stop every five minutes and ask me to insert another CD.
    6) After the last CD has installed, I'm then asked to insert Disk 1 and am asked if I want to install Gamespy Arcade, Xfire, Yahoo toolbar, or any other crapware that the developer is getting a gratuity check from.
    7) After declining all that shit, I click the finish button with the launch game radio button clicked.
    8) The game loads to the title menu at a whopping 4 frames per second.
    9) I then spend the next two hours in the graphics options adjusting resolution, texture detail, model detail, particle effects, anti-aliasing settings, and various other cryptic shit until I have about 24 frames per second, at which point the game looks less like the screen shots on the box and more like Quake 2.
    10) Back at the title menu now, I start up the game and get told that I need to patch to the latest version and the game dumps me to the desktop and starts the updater that spends the next three hours downloading shit.
    11) With the update finally installed, I restart the game and click on "new game" on the title menu. I then get to see the opening cinematics using the in-game engine and play the first ten seconds of tutorial when the game crashes and I find myself back on my desktop.
The download version of the PC game experience is different only in that you spend 6 to 10 hours downloading the game and you don't have to swap CDs.
The Steam version foregoes the first 7steps and doesn't allow  you to play your games offline.
PC elitists can call console gamers retards all they want. Take a look at that list and tell me who is really the retard in this situation.

Well you can always pirate games, which there are unlimited lists of them then, but no online availabe unless its bad private servers.

You can upgrade your PC more powerful

    Processor

Talking is much easier than typing tbh, and on consoles you dont have to fiddle with the devil that is Teamspeak/Ventrillo. Consoles have advantages over PCs, while PCs have advantages over consoles.

And, to the argument "PCs are upgradeable consoles are not!" is plain stupid, consoles are upgradeable, but only if you buy a while new one every few years (Seeming like a PC eh?), and consoles dont need to upgrade over those few years because their games stay the same in graphical detail/smoothness.

No, you got XBox Live (shudder). Anyway, the real issue is the games, and since this is mmorpg.com, pc is the king there at the moment. I like both my PS3 and Xbox though, but my pc is the one getting most of my love. It's just so versatile compared to the consoles.

I have a gaming PC and a 360, I honestly can't remember the last time I used the console but it's been well over a month. My PC is switched on every day, I certainly know which gaming system is giving me value for money day in and day out and it's not the console. The console is a childs toy compared to a rig built for gaming, there's no comparison and no better value for money than a gaming PC.

I take it that you've never used Linux, so let me explain. Photoshop has a Linux version available. I think that Maya also has a Linux version. There are also FOSS equivalents for Illustrator (Inkscape) and  Quark (Scribus). I'm not quite sure if you would have to recompile those packages specifically for the PS3 version of Linux or if they would run regardless of processor. I'm downloading Linux Mint-6 x64 right now to see if I can still use my favorite Linux apps with it (Streamtuner and Blender FTW!).

As for Bryce... you'd have to take your chances with Wine...

I'd like a link to ANY site that sells the kind of software I need to run on my PC....for PS3.  Give me a link to Illustrator or Bryce for PS3.  Or maybe Quark.....or something, you know....USEFUL.  I have decided I"m going to toss my eight thousand dollar gaming machine out the window and buy a cute lil' PS3 to do all my work on.  I'm going to need to replace all that software, so I'll be needing links.  Should I make a list of what I need from you, or can you produce the links I need here without further assistance?

Thing is, no one is suggesting that you throw out your computer. We're simply pointing out the stupidity of your arguement. Running a desktop on a PS3 is just about as absurd as running games on your PC. Get it?

These sorts of stupid argumentative threads that just go in circles and circles are nothing but more annoying drivel added to MMORPG, and really....this site just doesn't need any more of that crap.

Actually, this site thrives on this kind of crap. It's just a pity that you don't seem to see the joke. Then again, the joke is on you.

    Relationship vs Hooker.

    Hooker:

    1) Call/ find one.

    2) Pay $100 for sex.

3)Get some STD or cops arresting you.

4)Night is all done...go home alone.

    Relationship/Marriage.

    1) Find a decent partner.

    2)Date a few times...costing about $100/date.

3)Get laid after a few dates.

4)Date a few more times so you can continue with point #3.

    5)Have a constant companion.

6)Get Married...then you don't hafta go out on dates to accomplish #3

7)Buy a house n work your ass off for the next 20 years paying for it.

8)Have kids n work your ass off for the next 20 years for them.

Sure Hookers are easier to manage...but still alot of people still go with the releationship thing, cause it is more fullfilling.

No matter what, I can do a hell of alot more with a decent PC than what a console can do.

No, I didn't buy it just for gaming, and I'm adding on some expensive software in that price (the machine itself was only about 5k, but while I have a MAC at work for design programs, I also have to have them installed at home so that I can work on things here without having to have 3 separate machines at home for different purposes).  It was mostly to make a point. :)  But it will run any game that is presently out in maxed gfx, DX10 enabled, everything set on Ultra High and not stutter, so I'm pretty happy with it.

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to come off as snooty and bragging, but I'm just trying (in vain) to make a point about the versatility of a high end PC in comparison to a console.  It pretty much all boils down to what you need in functionality though, and I don't think console gamers will ever convince PC gamers that their consoles are better, and vice versa.

The irony of your post is that those in a relationship are more likely to use a hooker than someone who isn't. Also those with consoles probably already have a decent partner compared to the friendless PC gamer. Consoles are, and always have been, more of a social form of entertainment compared with hunching over a desk, alone, in bad lighting, playing an RTS or RPG on a PC.

I use my PC for MMO, RTS, FPS and RPG any single player game I'll buy on PC over console if I know the mod community is behind the game since it extends the replay value by quite a bit.

I use my Xbox360 for Madden and most recently Street Fighter IV.

Wow, after reading this whole thread I've come to one conclusion....most of you don't know what the hell you're talking about. (Especially those of you that choose sides.)

I like to play games on both. both are great and have their advantages. but if I had to choose one I'd choose my consoles. Mainly because I like the idea that everyone playing is on the same level as far as hardware goes. If I go on a massive killing spree in an FPS, I want to know that I did it by my own skill and not because my rig runs the game better than everyone elses. When I play online, I can talk about what I see on screen and now that my buddies see it too.

I do love pc games like NWN though because with mods, you can play a game for years...I don't even remember how many years I got out of the original NWN.

And I really hate the argument that people who play consoles are poor children who are too stupid or poor to keep their pc's upgraded. That's ridiculous. I run a "decent" rig. I have the money to fully upgrade it every 6 months. I know how to configure the graphics settings "just right". I just don't want to. Some people enjoy that type of thing. I don't. I'll just keep this one for a while and in a few years I'll go buy a much better "decent" pc for the same price I paid for this one.

Its cool if you prefer one over the other...but lets stop with the elitist bullshit. To each his own.

consoles are for the mainstream gaming population...   PC's are for those who take gaming more seriously.

That is purely my opinion.. but I think its pretty valid.  I graduated from console gaming to PC gaming at around age 15, I never looked back.

PC gaming is a pain in the ass... compatibility issues... driver updates.... hardware upgrades..... OS issues..... spyware.... viruses........

But its more rewarding too.   Also with PC gaming for many of us building, maintaining, and upgrading our gaming rig is as big a hobby as the games are....  I rather enjoy it.

I can end this discussion with 3 words.

    Oblivion nude mods.

There is a huge game modding community for PC games.

So have fun with your Oblivion on the toy 360 without mods, because your missing out on thousands of Oblivion mods. And that's just one game.

As a grown up that's married and has sex on a regular basis....

It's gonna take more than virtual titties and ass to get my attention and make me spend $500+ a year on upgrades.
