Whats the best video card for 100 bucks for EQ2? My step brother has a 200 dollar budget, 100 for video card and 100 for ram. Which card has the most band for yer buck?
I just bought a ATI Radeon x700 256mb but i haven't opened it yet. On the box it says PCI Express. I looked under system requirements and it says:
*PCI Express based PC is required with one x16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard.
*An additional connection to the system's power supply is not requred for radeon x700 pro 256mb of memory.
*Installation software requires CD-ROM drive.
*DVD playback requires DVD drive.
I dont remember off the top of my head what my motherboard is but i just got it with a AMD Athlon xp 3200. My guess is that it should work but i need another opinion. Until then I'm afraid to open the package.

The only manuals you really have to study are the ones that come with your motherboard, chassis and CPU (if there is one). Make sure you buy these components retail and not OEM, bulk, etc.

I chose this one. It is an nVidia card (I've had too many problems with ATI drivers) and has good all around stats for just 98 dollars. Please remember however that all my research into economy cards was done about a month ago when I was ordering components for my gaming system and something better may have come along.

ok, i can almost certainly tell you, that your computer does not support this. bring it back and purchase an agp version. the PCI express is a newer technology and only comes with certain choice motherboards (and i think it only comes on intel mobo's atm, not sure) but, its better safe than sorry, because if you open the box, then good luck with returning it.

Kilabane- Here is a freeware prog you can use to pull up your MB info if you need to check that way. Once you have it up it's just a matter of looking up the model number at the manufactorers site to check to see if it supports PCIe. Good luck.

putting together a pc is pretty much insert and screw basically, but i'd say the part that worries me the most is the risk of electric shock. I usually touch and hold a piece of metal before i handle any pc parts to avoid the chance of this. other than that, it's easy IMO. I've never bought/purchased refurbished parts so i wouldn't be able to tell you if i'd reliable...
I cant find a radeon or nvidia card thats between $200-$250 in retail stores other than a radeon 9800 pro 128mb. Ive checked bestbuy, compusa, and circuit city. It would be nice to find a geforce 6600 GT or an AGP x700. I think i might have buy a 6800 if i can find the extra cash.

What parts specifically? Make sure your CPU and Motherboard pin numbers match up Make sure your MB supports the RAM your getting. For example DDR vs. SDRAM (DDR= newer better) Manufactorers site will have most of the details your looking for on compatibility.

Jonesy, PCGamer just put out the Ultimate PC building bible, and it's very informative. It shows step by step procedures (with pictures!) to build your PC. With this at your side buliding a PC is a breeze. Everything is clearly explained so that even the person with the least amount of computer knowledge could build there own.

It's my understanding that they should work but you would be unable to take advantage of the dual channel architecture if you use different card models (with different CAS values, etc.). I could be wrong.

lol same here, we were supposed to have a 1 year subscribstion, but we only got 6 months. We got it for free from flyers miles, my dad flew so much years ago that now we have like 12000 points lol.
I was thinking that computer buildingguide was from PC Magazine, so nm, the one in PC gamer should be pretty new then.
Yeah the PCgamer one just came out on Nov. 30th. It has a benn a world of help to me. And Murt, I belive it was a newstand only issue so those with subscriptions would have had to buy it at the store anyways. It's a bit more exspensive than the average issue so that's probably why it was only on newsstands.

Take a look at the new Asus mobo that is just what the doctor ordered:
The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket939/a8nsli-d/overview.htm
Less expensive AMD processors, superior nVidia chip(set), support for dual GPU boards.
What more could you ask?
