More hyped on SW: ToR, though it's really close. ;)

First off: I love Star Wars since childhood. Second thing is, SWToR is under dev by BioWare and so far, all BioWare games I played were great, especially the Mass Effect series. I have to add that I loved Guild Wars 1 and I will have a look at the sequel. ;)

Oh, come on .. that's hardly fair.

Star Wars + Bioware + KOTOR timeline. That's like my perfect recipe for an MMO.

I'm sure GW2 will be a decent game, but there's really no contest for me.

I'm slightly hyped up for both, to be honest. TOR will have great stories but GW2 sounds like it will have great PvP. So I'll be getting both. It also helps that GW2 will have no subscription fee.

GW2 will be and does sound good.

But it can't compete with SW:TOR. Simply because its star wars. Its the best IP ever imo. When you mix that will possibly one of the best developers your just asking for an awesome game.

KOTOR is great, Mass Effect 1 and 2 are great and Dragon age is great and so far TOR looks amazing.

To tell you the truth Swtor wins for me, Bioware is just too awesome to make anything bad. Although i am kind worried since WAR guys are also working on the game, no offense.

  • VaultFairyVaultFairy Member UncommonPosts: 566

Guild Wars 2 for me. I played the GW since it was released although i never joined a guild and just took my time. Saying that i hardly done anything on there anyway, but it was fun none the less.

Just wish they release some more information about classes and what not. Liked the Mesmer class but my timing kinda sucked back then.

GW2 for me. A-Net already has a working (and highly successful) model to base the game on and build upon. TOR may be made by a successful and very popular company but they have nothing to show for their skills in the MMO genre and the limited information we have so far on the game has many people worried (large amount of solo and instanced content, possible MT based business model).

  • PilnkplonkPilnkplonk Member Posts: 1,532

    neither

both promise to be more "story oriented" than their predecessors which is a massive conceptual failure

story-oriented = death for persistent online worlds that are mmos

(is there an "epic story" in farmville?)

I expect massive initial sales and miserable retention rates after the players "consume the content" (or to be more precise, they perceive the dearth of any long-term draw in the game - in essence the lack of any tools for players to provide their own storylines and content - what is known as "sandboxyness" in these parts)

no one will pay a monthly subscription for what is basically a co-op console linear game with precisely determined "playing time" (the very term makes me shudder with revulsion)

however the suits will get their $$ back fast with presales, boxes and whatnots -  and that is what counts in this day and age.

    STO anyone?

    duh

Not trying to offend anyone but it seems that a lot of people are putting way too much faith in the fact that Bioware is making TOR. Yes, Bioware is full of talented developers who make great games but they have absolutely no experience in making MMOs. Most of their MMO experience comes from Mythic which actually worries me, since WAR sucks pretty bad.

Based on my experience with Bioware games, I have no doubt that TOR will have amazing story lines for the different classes. However, I have yet to read anything about TOR which makes it an MMO that will stand out from the rest. So far, judging by information I was about to find out about TOR, it seems to be WoW with voice overs and great quests.

    That would be... disappointing. :-(

I really want good gameplay for an MMO. Story is just a plus, as it alone cannot keep me occupied for more than one month or so. I don't want to invest 50 € for SWToR just to realise it's WoW with Star Wars graphics and better quests. :-(

Guild Wars 2 and it's not even close.

Until a company proves the Star Wars IP can work as an MMO I'm calling BS on every attempt.

  • MyskMysk Member Posts: 982

That's hard to say.  They both look like very good games and I will probably try both.  Guild Wars 2 will not have a monthly fee, as we know, so I'm already sold on it.

Both EA and Lucas Arts are involved with this Bioware project, and EA alone is reason enough for me to be uncertain about the project's quality (eg; ads in game, DRM, expected item mall issues, charging for every possible small thing that they can both in and out of the item mall, and so on) and even more so for its future (lack of ongoing support, premature closure of its other MMO, unable to resist putting its fingers into everything & general mismanagement).  For me, EA is a company that causes a considerable amount of uncertainty in any product that they're attached to, whether as publisher or as a developer, because they just can't seem to resist being the typical EA.

We'll see what the situation is like with SW:TOR.  We already see a lot of corporate speak from Bioware, but there's a certain line that they have to tow these days and I understand that.  The final product will have to speak for itself.

I also haven't been a fan of Bioware's Dragon Age, which is regularly brought up in interviews about SW: TOR.  Probably because there's a lot of spoken dialogue in Dragon Age and it's popular in general.  DA isn't a terrible game at all.  It's of good quality and the voice acting is generally great (with a few amusing moments thrown in). I have some nitpicks about the mage hats and the mage class in general, as well as some game mechanics.  However my main issue with DA is that it's highly formulaic and it's entirely predictable from the get-go.  Personally I'm the kind of guy who likes wondering what's going to happen next in a story, but Bioware opted to go a different route with Dragon Age - and that's okay for many, but I was pretty bummed about that.

DA was kind of like a Western anime in that you knew exactly who the bad guys were, who was going to die and pretty much when, what was going to happen in the end (basically who the real evil boss was), who was the tortured soul that would ultimately seek redemption, and that there would be a twist with a certain female character in the end (though the specifics of that twist sure weren't expected).  Everybody looked their part and played their part exactly as you would expect them to.  You just had to enjoy the ride even though you could see 99% of the loops and turns coming up.

They have a lot of writers hammering away at SW:TOR, though, so I'm hopeful that it won't turn out to be so formulaic and predictable.

So the cards are still out on the both of them.  The fact that it's a KoTOR setting makes me REALLY want SW:TOR to be... well, everything that it can possibly be, but I won't assume that it will be and, to Bioware's credit, I won't assume that it won't be.

If they both were going to have a monthly subscription commitment then they would both be firmly in the "we'll see" category.  As it is I probably lean toward GW2 until I have a more complete understanding of SW:TOR's situation.  Or that's the plan anyway.

    both equally

TOR all the way. Never was a big fan of the Guild Wars franchise.

  • icedutahicedutah Member UncommonPosts: 67

Of coarse GW2 for the PVP. Star Wars will have no pvp. It sounds more like a single player pve game.

  • ForceQuitForceQuit Member Posts: 350

I'm looking forward to both, but GW2 more so than SW:TOR.

That could change as more information about the games are released, because frankly we still know only a little about each.

However, from what I've seen, I can already tell that the art direction and animation in SW:TOR is going to annoy me to no end.  Guild Wars 2, however, has insanely great art and technical direction, perhaps the best in the industry.

GW2 will also have no sub, but SW:TOR looks redefine the concept of "massive" in massively.  It looks huge.

So each will have its pros and cons, hopefully they will both be great.

I'm more interested in Guild Wars 2. I already played SWG for over 3 years so I'm sort of burnt out on that franchise and from what I've read SWTOR isn't really that innovative as an MMORPG (apart from the voice dialogue.. which I think belongs in singleplayer games anyways). "Dialogue" should be between players.

    neither of them

Ultima Online 2 is coming and its goint to be the best game in the universe(not hype)

don't know if i would even consider SWTOR a MMORPG just yet. sounds more like a COop RPG.

  • JoiryJoiry Member Posts: 10

GW2 is my preference, but I'll likely try SWTOR if the gameplay isn't too dumbed down.

Personally, I don't see the need to put the two in some kinda grudge match.  They'll likely launch in the same 6 month timeframe based on the little info that's out there, but they don't fundamentally compete.  SWTOR will have a following of SW fans, Bioware fans, scifi MMO players, and general MMO players.  GW2: the fantansy MMO fans, PvP e-sport players, and the general MMO players.  They don't overlap too much.  I'm sure it'd be better for both games not to launch too near to each other, but I doubt it'll effect either too much.

There is of course a third perspective - Blizzard's.  For them, its Cataclysm vs GW2 + SWTOR.  So let's not fight and tag-team the 1000 pound gorilla in the room ;)

Sadly, Ultima Online 2 died a long time ago. Which is pretty sad because the game was going to be amazing. It was the first MMO to have motion captured animations. Unfortunately, UO decided to continue milking Ultima Online as much as the can.

What's really crazy is that the game still has about 100,000 subscribers, not to mention all those who play on private shards. Would be great if EA redid the client and made it 3D and on par with current graphics.

Bioware keeps saying that the endgame is going to be really special but it's just corporate talk as from what I've been able to gather, based on the various hints dropped by the developers, the endgame is going to revolve around instances, raids and battlegrounds.

Judging by the game play videos, the combat is pretty much the same as other MMOs. Yes, there is a cover system but Tabula Rasa had one as well.

Like I said, the game will have amazing stories but it will not be revolutionizing anything.

The thing is does the hype matter? I mean of course both game are gonna have fans hyped for it, but the hype doesnt mean how good it will be. And why GW2 and SWTOR, why not like, FFXIV?

    MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise

Not really looking forward to either one actually. Im not sure how you can compare successes between two games that will most likely have very different payment plans. They will both sell a bunch of boxes, but one will continue to make money after the initial sales.
