what i actually see here is another desperate attempt of filing up the coffers. Blizzard paid for this interview as a shameless promotion of a dying genre. MMORPG.com staff is really becoming watered down, just like WoW.
Well when you think about it, if the mmo genre wasn't in a horrible shape as it currently is they wouldn't be needing to promote non-mmos. 2010 is going to b a weak year for new mmos, we need all the help we can get lol.
I have probably logged 8 or 9 hours on SC2. I play Protoss mainly and some Terran. The writer is correct that if you liked the first you will like the 2nd. You have basically the same game with some cool upgrades, new shiny graphics, and i'm sure an engaging single player.
The key is the Galaxy toolkit/map editor they will be releasing. Without writing any code you can mod SC2 into a 3rd person shooter with dialog, and do all kinds of cool things. The community and modding will be what makes the game amazing and replayable. It is a solid RTS close to the original with a crazy modding tool. If you like old school RTS you will be playing this and loving it i'm sure.
Btw they just deleted my thread questioning the creation of "Non-MMOrp" forum creation. THey created that forum along with this SC2 article, so expect more non MMOPRG games on the front page, perhaps even some popular FPS.
current beta testers are only testing 1/3rd of the game. Single player and the Galaxy Editor aren't available yet. even though i'm only playing 1/3rd of the game, i still think it's awesome. I don't think i could say that for many other video games.
i uninstalled this game very fast. i admit i didnt look into any of the games mechanics but it just felt like the same as star craft 1 from a first glance.imo the graphics werent even that great. it left me feeling like i shouldnt be as hyped as i am about diablo 3 being anything innovative from the others either.
Just like Dragon Age had reviews and adverts on this site, it really isn't a huge deal that SCII is being shed some light as well. I know there are plenty out there like myself just waiting for a big MMO to sweep us off our feet and in the meantime are catching up on some amazing console titles. It's good to know what's going on in the gaming world, outside of MMORPG's.
However, I truly wish that a better writer experienced the game. I've read MySpace blogs with better articulation. Was this article even edited?
I am amazed that there are so many here so interested in the finances of MMORPG.com. "this site it bogus man because they cater to the advertisers!'. Idots...
like to add after some comparison between sc2 and sc1:
players who prefer more rough graphics or more "real" colors (like diablo1/2) could also prefer sc1 over sc2 which has some similarities in design with wow or diablo3(known vids and screenshots). because like mentioned before in this topic gameplay is very comparable, the differences for me are mostly graphics and music in this case which i like more in sc1. so while im pretty sure competitive players should check sc2 because it still offers great gameplay (arguably better than most other rts) casual rts players could prefer games with design that fits their needs. as an example ive downloaded command&conquer tiberium sun which is now free full download... and like the overall design more than sc2. the gameplay seems more fluid in sc2 compared to c&c tiberium sun but it cannot push away all the design for me.
for interested people: there are dedicated starcraft or other "pro" gaming sites around which offers replays, videos and detailed information. that should provide all needed information whether to buy or not to buy on release !
I've decided not to waste my time writing an article for SC2 that would be posted on MMORPG.com... just not worth the time or effort for how few people would actually be interested in reading it. That and like someone already posted there are plenty of websites and reviews out there already. If you want to learn more about SC2 I suggest you just google it, what I would type has likely already been typed out before thus why spend hours creating something already made? Not like I'd be paid to do it anyways.
If you insist on talking to me about SC2 I'd more than gladly speak to you in VENT / TS, just send me a PM and we'll arrange it.
Guys, we're not listing the game, we're just doing an article on it. If you think a ton of MMO gamers aren't also looking toward Blizzard's RTS, you're wrong. We do our best to bring stories that are going to be of interest to our readers and we think that this is. We did the same thing with Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age.
If you're not interested in reading about non-MMOs, then don't click on it.
"We did the same thing with Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age."
Get ready for the Starcraft 2 adverts on mmorpg.com
You guys are so transparent...
Actually I highly doubt we would get an ad deal for SC2. I would welcome it though! But for the record, we restrict our ads to video games, not MMOs. Just be happy you don't see ads for "free credit reports", "refi your mortgage". "dating site xyz" or "shoot the bunny to win!" crap.
While we did get fortunate enough to participate in 2 big EA ad campaigns (DA:O and ME2) they had zero to do with the articles we wrote. We got these campaigns because an ad agency I work with often happened to land these contracts and they love the results they see on our site.
The fact is that most of you making statgements like this really have no idea how the online advertising stuff works. My editing team sets up content like this without my knowledge (as I desire it this way) and I am approached by advertisers on completely seperate level. A company like Blizzard does not book their own ad space - they have 20 agencies drooling and bidding for the contract(s) and the winners approach sites like us to beat us up on ad placements...these agencies have no clue what Blizzard might have let my Editor write from the PAX show...please!
There is no conspiracy here guys...we don't need to write an article for a game in order to get ad sales...especially from behemoth companies like EA or Blizzard (we are like an ant standing next to the space shuttle in comparison).
As for this article being written, I don't see any problem with it. We are all gamers here and this is a MAJOR event in the gaming world. This game (as with all major titles) will effect the MMO world good or bad.
As Jon said, we are not adding it to the list or following its every turn in our news. We were at a gaming show and given an opportunity to get a hands on - this generally comes with the professional courtesy that we write about the experience on our site. Just loosen up a tad!

Then DON'T write them. You know you are going to take criticism for it, and there are plenty of non-MMO sites to cover those games.

Well, as you can see in this topic many people are fine with us covering a major non-MMO title every now and then. If you don't have interest in this content - then don't click and read it - it is not like we forced you to read it before moving on in the site or something.
We are not just going to avoid doing something to dodge criticism by a handful of bitter people that are looking at the world through conspiracy glasses and a tinfoil hat on.
I have come to realize over the many years running this site that no matter what we do there are just some people so angry and miserable that you cannot please or convince them...they have their mind made up and that is that.
What I don't understand is if you are so negative on us and our motives...why bother coming here? If I believed a site was "evil" and "corrupt" as you obviously feel we are - then I would not support them.

This is what comes of not reading the forums. Most posters have already put this guy on ignore and then you go quoting him, thanks. He takes his cynicism to the level of the black knight, "allright, we'll call it a draw", you can't reason with these people so don't reply.
Incidentally, I am the only one who voted yes on the poll further up the page and as such believe a copy would be a fit reward (even the guy who made the poll didn't vote).

Wow is so boring and guild wars 2 is not near release... starcraft 2 is perfect fix , besides all true fans have been waiting at least 11 years for this game.
Well considering that it's the maker of the king our genre that is releasing this game, and most of us here obviously have some interest in all things Blizzard (for good or bad), I think this article was definitely relevant and worth posting. Personally I got into this genre because of WarCraft 3 (another Blizzard RTS game) which led me to WOW.

I have been reading here for about 4-5 years and I haven't seen a single other non-mmo get an entire article reported on it. That's not to say I haven't missed one or two, but ironic that it's Blizzard's game making this headline. No irony there.

We did a write-up on Dragon Age and I think Mass Effect 2 (this one I am not 100% sure on though). I remember Jon asking me over a year ago if I objected to the occassional non-MMO piece for a major game and I said "sure, go ahead" - as long as we don't list them and follow the games I don't see any harm in it. I mean, most MMO gamers play other games too (I personally love MMOs, RTS and CRPG games). We are not making some radical direction shift here - it is just one article on something we are pretty certain a large % of our community is interested in.
