Dude, relying on a gear / stats advantage to beat other players is not "competitive". You got your definitions mixed up. Competitive would be, you know, winning because you are more skilled as a player.
Oops...nope...competitive transcends just player skill. Meaning, for the correction, competitive shouldn't just be about player skill, or one element of game-play, but draw from every facet of game-play to contribute to an outcome; character attributes, charactyer skill, weapon, armor, situation, team vs solo, etc.
And if what the OP is saying is true, Darkfall is being WoW-afied through entitlements to newer players that feel that developing ones character with all the essentials and know-how through game-play is something that they should be rewarded with for solo, out-of-the-box one-on-one encounters for just signing up.
Nah, they are simply getting closer to what they advertised before launch and onward lol. Where player skill matters, a freshly made toon in the hands of a skilled player can take out a vet etc. yada yada yada. Besides all that the grind to get to a competitive level just isn't fun and considering new players can't defend themselves while they grind because regardless of player skill you just can't compete with a vet they get discouraged and leave.
In any case, you can't have it both ways. DF players are constantly complaining about lack of players and a dwindling player base. AV is working to resolve that. Can't have it both ways lol.
Shouldn't fighting outnumbered be a pain in the ass? I mean really, who goes into a battle thinking, you know, if we could just be outnumbered that would make this even easier.
QFE...
So many good comments already... I guess I don't really need to offer mine...
Of course, as if we needed any more evidence that this was a brilliant move by AV, all you need to do is look at this thread. We have one guy complaining... I think I saw one or two others that kind of agreed with him.. The rest see this as a good change. DF just announced a free trial and now has boxes for sale in stores (or will soon).
It would be awesome to see DF fulfill it's potential, and I think this change is a HUGE step in the right direction.

you do know they said that in the context of other MMO games right. What they were saying is that the spread between vet and medium players would be much smaller that it is in other games, not completely nill. Thing is, they have already done that. The spread between vet and medium players is considerably smaller than it is in other MMO games.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
I think people need to change their definition of 'hardcore'.
hardcore don't complain about things like grind or people starting earlier than them.
If people want FPS without having to do any work there are other games. The thing is, people want a grind, but only so much as is convineint to them and nobody can agree on how much grind is needed. This game going the way of SWG, its a shame and the instant gratification scrubs who will temporarily play this game will just leave when blizzard comes out with their FPS.
You call yourself a competitive gamer and then you whine about the fact that newer players will be able to compete with you. Do you truly not see the irony in that?
Ka-POW!
Here we are. Art imitating life. People less likely to succed and less likely to put forth effort towards accomplishments have demonstrated time and time again in society that they are entitled to what others have accomplished, but without similar effort, yet an expectation.
Where once DF may have been a competitive outlet where players earn their competitive edge through game-play resources, time and effort, leading to progressively more growth and edge, are now observing welfare gaming.

its not about 1v1 its about not losing just b/c you are outnumbered by 1.
take things to extremes more.
Thats where player skill comes in quit relying on some artificial advantage.
having your target block while his buddy shoots you in the back isn't an artificial advantage.
next moronic statement from someone who doesn't understand the game pls.
No having a great deal more hp than them because of grinding A.K.A. Macroing while AFK is an artificial advantage. So now that you understand what is and isn't an artificial advantage lets continue.
How did you let yourself get into a situation like that? Where there no tree's or other means of using the terrain to your advantage? Did they change something so that blocking doesn't drain a good bit of stamina? Were you prepared with pots and such? Did it not dawn on you to maybe use splash dmg spells to get around there block while keeping your back protected with a tree or rock?
So.... please continue with your moronic statements please lol. I played DFO for a good while and fought against people of my skill or better lol, I didn't camp the newb areas . That probably explains why you and I have such different views.

The only problem I have here is that working for months on end or even years to get to where you are in the real world has some lasting benefits. In the end it is worth it.
Working for months on end or even years to get some leg up on new players ..... well it's down right pathetic. Why would anyone pay to work online where there are zero benefits to doing so? What altruistic thing is done here? I mean ... surely if you expect people to work at a game like they do in real life there will be some benefits to doing so as in the real life right?
Money, a home, a car, something that will better mankind or at least someone down on there luck?
Thats why your view simply fails. It's a video game, it's something we do for fun. Non of this is to better our own lives or anyone else's beyond the simple enjoyment we get from playing.
I personally don't have a problem with the grind to compete in DFO but that is only because I've already done it. I did it at launch where everyone started out on the same footing. We could all compete with each other because we were basically at the same toon lvl.
After a good while people began leaving and new players came in. The fights began getting asinine. Those that macro'd day in and day out had a distinct advantage over those that actually played there toons. Those that actually played there toons had a distinct advantage over those that just started the game. I don't mean personal skill wise, I mean they had very distinct artificial advantages that simply couldn't be overcome.
It got boring. You either instantly new you were going to win or lose a fight when that first hit landed.
There's no challenge in that. It quits becoming a competition and starts becoming a hierarchy at that point.
Again, if this were real life and we people were working towards something important then you would have a point.
The fact that this is a video game and done completely for the entertainment your whole post simply makes you look a bit foolish and a bit like you need to get out more and actually work for something that means something.
I mean if you truly are looking for something to meaningful and worth spending all that time working for then by all means go out and do some volunteer work. I did for Zoo Atlanta for 10 years.
So get off your high horse and remember this is a friggin video game lol. It supposed to be about fun not work and everything you spent months and months or even years working for in a video game is completely meaningless. It's not important, it's done for entertainment. Until you start getting paid based on how much you worked in a video game or until it benefits mankind in some way it's nothing more than a form of entertainment.

I dont agree. I use sports as example because sports are games. They are very much like our games, done for recreation, has rules etc.
Good sports player play for YEARS to become the best. Now, as a weekend sports player you dont have to play the best to still have fun.
I have zero problem with an RPG game that can take years to get to top skill level and most MMO's do this without you being fully aware that they are doing it to you. They do it with the cunning use of expansions.

I know you know people who have attempted to start over Frumpy. They couldn't handle the grind of starting over. I knew when starting this game the first day when I died to Motig Sin's inferno that this game wouldn't last if this year long grind stayed the way it was. As someone said people don't pay $15 a month to be your bitch every time they run into you. People don't play games to die to you when they outnumber you 2-3 just because you have 100 hp advantage on them and hit a lot harder. I'm not saying there shouldn't be RPG elements, I just think it's kind of ridiculous. And you're being pretty ridiculous if you don't think there's a problem right now in the amount it takes to level legitly.

Yes, good sports players play for years to become the best..... and they get paid to do so or they are looking for a real payout at the end...... either way they are striving to get paid for what they do or they are getting paid for what they do.
Next example? And please make this one better lol.
Edited to Add: Heck I will even give you one. MTG (Magic the Gathering) I played for fun at the start. I got competitive though and worked hard to build up my collection and make competitive decks. At the start it was entertainment, but it became work... not because I enjoyed the work but because of the payout it could bring. I made a good deal of money off of all my work and at the end when I was ready to retire I sold my collection for even more. The payout was worth all the effort involved.
You call yourself a competitive gamer and then you whine about the fact that newer players will be able to compete with you. Do you truly not see the irony in that?

You guys crack me up. If art imitated life it would always become easier for those who follow than it was for the pioneers. When Tenzing and Hillary ascended Everest it was considered suicidal to even try. Now blind people do it. Blind People. It took the Wright Brothers years and every penny they could scrape up to make their first sucessful flight. Now anyone with a drivers license and a couple of hundred bucks can do it. Your assertion is crap. It's a natural progression in real the real world. In games it's usually also true for different reasons. Darkfall has several guides that will help people skill up much easier, even if they don't cheat their ass off like most of the pioneers. The real question is what purpose does the grind serve? Because it sure isn't for the player's enjoyment.
And the grind only exists because the players decided to play the game that way.. Yeah, probably an oversight in design by AV, but this is their first.
I don't grind in DF.. I play the game.. I enjoy the open world, the involved combat.. Well, all of it.. Even after reading about macroing or grinding for stats, first thing that came to mind was "Why on earth would I want to do that and remove all the fun I'm having"..
And it looks like I was correct.. I suppose, looking at it from the other side.. Had I decided to play the game incorrectly from day 1 and have all the fun removed from it, only to see the mechanics change so that my not-fun method of playing was no longer necessary, I might be upset.. Upset at myself for not taking the time to enjoy the game properly in the first place.

i was already perpared for that response.
I have a coworker who is not a proffesional player and he doesnt play for money but his team practices A LOT. why? becuase they like to win and they enjoy the game. You dont have to play for money to have the desire to put in the work to be as good as you can.
I want a game that is more of a hobby than a game. I want a game where tonight I build off of what I did last night, I also like empire building, character building etc. Now. I am not saying what some people suggest are bad idea for a game, in fact I like the idea of basically making a fantasy based FPS game but NOT this game. This game has invested to much in the direction its going to turn it into something radically different and I dont care what the orginally promised.

So then you completely reject the idea that talent can overcome training?? I mean, a handful of competant players, with noob toons, vs 1 competant player w/ a non-noob toon??
I see the victory in numbers there, not stats.

yea, people like you want to give steriods to the neophyte soccer players so they can "compete with the vets". Do you guys actually think the vet soccer players just want to beat neophyte soccer players all day and don't want any competion and that is why they are against the neophyte soccer players getting steroids? . Yea, right, veteran soccer players are against neophyte soccer players getting steroids because they are afraid of competition. LOL.
This is basically what you people are saying, lol. You should hear yourselves, its hilarious

it depends on the game dosent it? Lets take pen and paper games as example. Should the outcome of a battle in a pen and paper game be determined by who can throw the dice the best?
This is an RPG RTS game the keyboard and mouse is what you use to interact with the game, its not the game itself. its like suggesting the winner of a book award is who is best at the keyboard.
I know AV made a bunch of player skill based promisses and I really wish they hadnt becuase they confused the issue. What they are trying to do is simply add a realistic FPS aspect to the game, not make the entire competitiveness of the game based on FPS aspects.

Upset at myself for not taking the time to enjoy the game properly in the first place.

oh, i think brim would have stuck with it if he didn't have the option to buy an account for so cheap. He even refused at first before his buddy talked him into it for like 50 bucks.

i was already perpared for that response.
