Whatever it is, it will be extremely interesting to see it revealed.
Personally I dont think Blizzard would want to cannibalise their own existing playerbase. I think they'll be more likely to try and swipe someone else's. What online game has a massive presence that Blizzard might cast their gaze, vast, cool and unsympathetic, on?
Second life an free realms have a larger player base...
SL? Surely you jest?
RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.
i stopped playing wow due to everything focusing on raiding but thats me....hopefully they will add something that players really can influence maybe shifting lines of conflict..of bettter yet some world fantasy or sci-fi thats was been ravaged by war and players need to rebuild while holding back the opposing foruces...
istaria had alot of rebuilding in it.. some villages were completely destroyed but if players rebuilt them then npcs moved in and a new city/outpost grew graphics abit dated though and gear just didnt fit right...and by rebuilding i mean something like ..this bridge takes 3000 oak boards 500 steel girder etc and craftemen harvest mats to make more finished products while trying to fight off monsters or what have you..i know its seems more of a crafter game im sure blizzard can tie in alot of other options.
maybe a nice zombie game..
anyway ill watch for it but i dont xpect much of a true difference fro blizzard they ruined wow by dumbing it down..maybe a revamp of tabula .. or a cartoonish game called seed which was all player driven.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand?
"We got rid of the trinity." How'd you do that? "Now everyone can heal." Sounds like you just took the mechanic and spread it thin. "Well no, there's one class that can do it better than others." I see, so they're healers. "No. They're.." -mind asplode-
I don't think they'd try to steal population away from their own game.
So no, I don't think that.

I don't know what the new game will be. But whatever it is, they're not going to deviate very far from a formula that has made them rich.
Yeah, but what is that formula? To me, it's the effort they put into their games to make them really, really polished. But it isn't neccessarily the WoW system (level grind, directed game play, easy, identifier symbols, etc.). But they may see it differently. I don't really know.
All I can say is that it will be completey different from anything they have ever done. Thats all I'm allowed to say.
This is what the developers have said in interviews also. They are shooting for something completely different. I imagine whatever they do pick, will make use of there new engine they developed for Starcraft 2 and using for Diablo 3. It's an amazing engine that can handle just about any style of game and works great under a heavy load of models on the screen. Capable of displaying some insanly high detail models.
I can guarantee it will not be a sci-fi game. It will follow a similar formula to WoW. It will be a fantasy based gamed with ultra realistic graphics. The game engine will make Modern Warfare look like Pong. They will wait until 3D television has saturated the mainstream. When the 3D computer monitor is commonplace, they will release the game with an optional 3D client. It will more than likely take place in the Warcraft universe either 1000 years before, or 1000 years after the timeline in WoW. It will have gameplay elements that will revolutionize the genre, and will take advantage of whatever pay model the mmorpg industry is using(or they will invent a new model). Mark my words... 8/15/10
I honestly think that this is a difficult question to answer. First of all, we know little about the new game. However, I think that Blizzard is big enough where it knows the risk of making a clone of a game they have already developed. I think that Blizzard will take the parts of WoW that work and will then work it into a different theme with new things that work for this other MMO that may not necessarily work for WoW. I think developers should always be trying to innovate and revolutionize the industry so I think that what is most likely is that it will have WoW aspects but will not be a WoW clone.

QFT
(And if this isn't a hint from Alpha, nothing is.)
Except they specifically stated that it will be a new IP. Sorry to burst you bubble
voted no. I dont think they will release another themepark to take customers away from their flagship game. I'm expecting a theme that isnt fantasy (sci-fi, modern, etc), and possibly a game that isnt as geared towards casual players as WoW is. If we're lucky it may even be skill based. After WoW's success, you would assume their next mmo project would have alot of lee-way to go out and do something different, something niche (possibly). Either way it should be interesting.

I honestly could not even fathom a vote.Blizzard never makes sense to me,from their out in left field spending [redkneck rampage] to hiring outside of their large corporation to be able to make SC Ghost work on console.
Their newest game SC2,is a low tech game, hard to believe a giant with billions of dollars would deliver such a low tech game,so they never make sense to me,so how could anyone figure out their next move?
Usually they seem to stick to low tech ,but they went out and licensed a top notch game engine for this venture,so again hard to figure blizzard out.Goto Gamasutra and they are hiring a game engine tool set designer,so again this means at least possibly means a whole new set of tools they cannot develop themselves,so this leads me to believe a totally new type of game, that they are not used to working with.
I think we need a lot more information before we can make any logical guess as to what their plans are.Blizzard might just be planing for the future, knowing full well that WOW will eventually die out,so they are preparing themselves for the future, they have at least 5-10 years i think before they really have to worry.
Well, because of all the "low tech" their games has so many people that can play it, and thats why they have billions of dollars, because they do make low tech games.. if all their games looked like crysis you think they would have has as much money? lol.
It's going to be accused of it for sure but that will still depend on what a persons "personal definition" of being a "clone" is. I've learned that seems to be a really prevelant trait with mmo players putting their own meaning on words and such. I certainly don't expect Blizzard to make the ultimate sandbox game though it will most likely be themepark oriented and why not? They did a good enough job with it last time I just don't even see it making sense for them to stray too far from the formula they've found success with. But it isn't going to be WOW 2 (I hope).
I still don't know why they won't make a Starcraft mmo though.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I think it will use the same general format as WoW, but with a few of huge innnovations as selling points. That seems to be the pattern with everything that Blizzard makes in terms of expansions and sequels.

oh well enough ranting
Blizzard's upcoming MMO is still a secret because they are waiting for GW2 and SW:TOR beta so that they know what ideas and features to steal.
j/k

It's actually it means "Everquest clone," but nobody remembers that bit.
Someday we'll all look back on the age of computers - and lol.

I don't believe Blizzard can create something new. It's gonna be very alike to wow.
Your post actually means you don't understand what the term "WoW clone" means
You mean a different visual style right? cus WoW graphics for what they want to achieve are top notch.
