I agree that the races are too few, but other than that the game looks good. All in all I think the game will be good, and I will play it even if I can't be who I want to be in there.
Lets ask from an objective point of view: is there a point at which you think a gaming company should be reasonable and not provide all the possible paths one could take but instead provide the amount provided to them by the situation they find themselves in?
So the game isn't even in Open Beta and you've given up.....on what? Waiting? That just means you are impatient. Mass majority haven't even tested the game out and you are here to talk this game down already, you are probably the worse Bioware fanboi out there.
And let me just say, Bioware stated they want to use WoW as a 'touchstone' for SWTOR, as a mold to base their game off, not trying to recreate the WoW fantasy in a sci-fi setting. They are going to use story driven quest for players to move forward in the RPG elements of the game, they are employing a very similar, very traditional mmo combat (tho I would love to see the Mass Effect 2 combat in this game :P) BUT this doesn't mean SWTOR will be anything like WoW.
Trolls and fanbois pls move along.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
I'm sorry but this is just silly. Folks are way to over emotional over a game that isn't even close to release yet. And the comments about WoW...who freaking cares. All it boils down to in the end is if you enjoy the game or don't you. Since it hasn't been released then you have pretty much no way of knowing this feeling so why this overly stressing yourself over it at this juncture? Quit looking for something to poke at because if you look hard enough guess what....you'll find something. I don't care what it is but you'll find when you keep trying.

If they would be made by the dev team that is making SWTOR expect simplified stock market rules and easy football gameplay available for everyone in the family.
I love Bioware. I think if anyone can bring the depth of story to this game it is them. They are master storytellers. I have faith in them. Having played SWToR, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age and Mass Effect 1 & 2 ,all of which I absolutely love I am going on blind faith that they will not disappoint me.
I understand the OP's concerns and hope he either waits until the reviews are in to give it a look or finds something else he likes. Some of the things he finds to be weaknesses I consider to be good things:
Flipping sides: I hated that feature in SWG. It was way too easy for people to flip back and forth based on the numbers or whatever loot was available. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out which side you're on. It makes no sense for people in the middle of a war to flip sides that often. You would be shot because you can't be trusted. Plus I'm sure that we'll have the option of keeping as many alts as we want so that we can try out every class.
Species : Another thing I hated about SWG was seeing wookie and trandosian jedi. It just doesn't seem right.I'm sure someone will be along to tell about some minor character in an EU book that was a wookie or trandoshian and was force sensitive. It doesn't matter. We have to keep in mind the time and place that this game is set in.
@Charisi - About the playable race issue... To my understanding once you have played a character through their complete Story Arch its supposed to open up other playable races. This does not mean Miraluka will be playable as a Sith per se. But it does open that up as a possibility.
About Faction Swapping... I can agree with your points. But I don't see how they could have made that a choice here. First off, it would mean learning a new set of skills, and those combined with previous skills, would likely be OP. And conversely, lets say you started with a Sith Warrior, who later was redeemed, If he goes on using the same technigues isn't that going to lead him back to the Dark Side? He would have to go through some kind of Trauma where he forgets everything and has to be trained over from Scratch. And I personally don't think many players are going to be comforable with that dynamic in a game.
In closing, I hope you can find a way to give SWTOR a chance when it comes out. If you love Star Wars, and have enjoyed past BioWare games, as much as you say... I think it should be worth trying. Then if you really cannot enjoy it, you will know that you have to "give it up".
I have given up . Oh just wait game is not even out yet.... It is a real shame that people give up a game oh hearsay, or expecting features or elements that will break the game concept provided by the developers.
It's a sort of pointless Black is the new White type discussion and results in nothing.

OMG, that was funny and so true. I can't help but wonder how many of the Doom Cryers will be playing this game and never admit to their hypocrasy. Personally, I like what I am seeing in this game so far, but I won't make up my mind until it releases.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
First, let me preface this by saying a few things. Most importantly, I am probably what some would consider a bioware fanboy. I've played every game they've made, (with the exception of Jade Empire...just haven't gotten around to it yet), and loved everyone of them. More specifically, I'm a Mass Effect NUT. I've put hundreds of hours into both games, and read the comics and books as well. I firmly believe Bioware craps gold.
Also, I am most definitely a Star Wars fanboy, (minus the prequel trilogy of course). 95% of the books I read are Star Wars books. I've played/own the majority of Star Wars video games, (yes, I still even have Shadows of the Empire for N64 =P). I absolutely LOVE Star Wars. It has such a rich and vibrant lore.
Now, I was one of the SW:TOR fanboys that has been waiting for this game since before we even knew what Bioware Austin was up to. I have been so excited for this game, that at points I felt like a child waiting for X-mas. However, based soley on what I have read the past week or so, I feel the game has completely lost my interest. I just read the article about how World of Warcraft is the "touchstone" for SW:TOR development. Now, that being said, I can't blame a company for wanting to be successful. What's the goal of any company? To make money, plain and simple. I've played WoW in the past as well. I think WoW was good in it's own way, but I hated how dumbed down they ended up making the game, just so they could cater to the idiots that had no idea how to play a game. I certainly understand why they did it though, as it has made the game the most successful MMO to date. Now, I'm not going to sit here and bash WoW, (as simply, I don't HATE the game, as others do), as that wasn't the point of my article. I think WoW should be left as WoW, and other companys should stop trying to copy WoW, and make their own game.
I feel that Bioware is severely hindering the game's capabilities. I was extremely disappointed when I read that space was going to be a rail shooter. After complaining about it for a while, I realized that it didn't really matter. I was going to play the game anyway, as the rail shooter space combat wasn't a deal breaker for me.
Then I read about the race/class restrictions. Now before I go into this, let me save some of the trolls some trouble. I know race/class restrictions have been in virtually every MMO ever made. I get it. One more time for the visually impaired, I KNOW! What upsets me about the restrictions in SW:TOR, is that I feel they are FAR too restricting. I mean, here we have probably one of the most expansive and rich lores in the world, that is literally FULL of dozens and dozens of various race/class combos,(to put it simply). A perfect example of a clear disregard for lore is the Miraluka. They have to probably be one of my more favorite races in SW lore. There have only been a few well known Miraluka throughout SW, but certainly the most prominent has to be Vises Marr. For those that don't know, she was a sith Miraluka companion from KOTOR 2. Now, Bioware has limited them to REPUBLIC ONLY. Why in poo perfect hell, is one of the most force sensitive races in SW history, being limited to ONLY jedi? Granted a large number of miraluka helped rebuild the jedi order, but they weren't ALL jedi, and it certainly wasn't a rare sight to see sith miraluka.
I could list dozens of other examples, but I really don't want to put you non SW nuts to sleep =P. The point is, I feel like Bioware didn't even bother to do the most basic research on the races and classes they were putting in the game, or SW itself for that matter. For example, I read one article from a producer, (I believe it was a producer. Can't recall his name off the top of my head at the moment), who said that there will never be faction swapping....ever. What?! All the major events in all of SW history are BASED on faction swapping. The most notable example, Anakin Skywalker. He grew up as a jedi,. Then what happened? HE FELL TO THE DARK SIDE!!! And at the end of his life, redeemed himself by saving his son's life. The success of the Empire was in large part, due to Anakin's fall to the dark side, thus completely changing that time period. The examples of falling to the dark side/redemption are far more than I care to list, as I don't have hours to do so, but you get the point.
I realize that Bioware is trying to make the best story possible, but they are ignoring key elements that make SW what it is. According to their story, no sith will ever be redeemed, and no jedi will ever fall to the dark side. This simply isn't Star Wars. While I do have other complaints, (like locking lightsaber styles/colors to one per class), I feel I've been long winded enough.
In closing, let me just say that I'm not trying to sway anyone, one way or the other. I was merely voicing my distaste for what the game has shaped up to be, and wanted to sort of gauge how many others felt the same. There is no need for trolls/flaming, (even though I know the logic impaired will be on here doing it anyway), and I don't need people to tell me the game isn't even out yet, so wait and see. I know it's not out yet. I based my opinion soley on the info/videos Bioware have released already.
Just relax and drink some alcohol.
When the game is out you have all the right to be dissapointed and blame them for their bad job.As for now wait for swtor along with 1 milion or more till u see the real deal.I may end to be a good game but it may end to be a big dissapointment as well.
I agree with the OP ... bottom line is that SOE made the greatest Star Wars MMO that will ever exist in SWG until they completely destroyed it with that plague they call the NGE.
RIP all Star Wars MMOs

And this is why opinions are like certain parts of the human anatomy that we all have.
All kidding aside, I played SWG before AND after the NGE and while both versions of the game were decent in their own way, neither one grabbed the majority of people that played it. Honestly, I couldn't tell you why the game never appealed to me, but neither version did.
SWTOR on the other hand is grabbing me pretty hard and no matter how much I resist it, I know that I WILL be buying this game as soon as it goes live to try it out. I will have to wait until then to see if they can actually keep me though, which SWG couldn't. Currently the signs look positive though.

As soon as I saw them march in on E3 to annouce thins game and started to too say WE have Invented the WHEEL its called STORY I knew this game was going to be a let down for me... BIOWARE DOSENT UNDERSTAND WHAT AN MMO IS. They were DOOMed from the start.

I see where you are coming from , I feel the same way for the most part. To me an MMO is about the gameplay, with .... a Mass of people! not story . I never read the games lore, nor quest text etc... I powergame to max level and then go on to PvP. That is how I play my mmorpg games, and it is what I enjoy.
If I wanted a game for its story then I would buy a Bioware single player game! because lets face it unless you play on a RP server, you can read all that Lore, turn around and there will be L3//K SkieW4l|<3R standing next to you spamming , begging for gear and help;therefore, ruining the immersion of your so called epic story.( amongst Chuck Norris jokes etc...)
I play MMORPG's for the PvP, so the rest of the features really don't bother me or matter to me, I dont care about music/sound ( I listen to my own) I dont care much about graphics, and I dont mind grinding, which brings me to the point in which I agree with you on the reason I think Bioware Doesnt Understand MMO's, or at least some of its players.
Bioware stated that their death penalty would avoid people from grinding on lower end mobs etc. and they want players to take risks into doing certain things that a harsh death penalty would otherwise change a player's mind. For my playstyle and for any efficient powerleveling ( powergamers would agree) the #1 rule is DON'T DIE.
It is not due to xp loss or debt etc. Powerleveling is all about XP per hour so you will always pick the easiest route and dying even if the risk is slight will lower that ratio so i just never risk it Why do quest X for an extra 100xp when quest Z takes half the time and 0 risk; or I can stand on a fast spawn area killing weasy mobs without runing around, and back to town to turn in a quest ?( specially if the run to town takes you 5 minutes round trip)
I don't even Loot when I level up I set a special time to make cash etc.. between grinding sessions, or loot to full pack and just keep grinding as long as weight doesn't hinder me.
I just have hopes that Bioware somehow understands that people that grind do it becasue they choose to and regardless of what they do people will always grind and some folks will always explore etc...
I hope they can introduce their story without getting on the way of what I consider fun. As long as I can ESC from cut scenes etc... I guess I'll be ok for me. I do have faith in them but with EA involved .... well I would never hold my breath.
But, lets be honest here! Do you honestly believe no one thought about introducing STORY as the main focus of an MMORPG before? imho YES , All MMORPG's ( except a few sandboxes) have a story EQ,UO, LOTRO , hell even WOW has a story!
Can I interact with it? YES! I can either close the quest /ignore it or do it!
Bioware is doing nothing new. but adding an extra step before you can accept the quest. I will google the quest see the rewards and pick each answer accordingly!

Apparently an MMO is not a game that 12 million people are claiming it is and paying Blizzard X amount of dollars every month.
Sorry to break this to you but your definition of what an MMO is/not isn't accepted by the vast majority of MMO players.
An MMO with a good story hasn't really been done before, esp not to this level. We'll see if this will succeed or not but I highly doubt they won't hit the '500k' sub mark. Heck Bioware can release nothing but a toolset (NWN1 original) and people still bought millions of them.
No, NWN1 OC sucked, it was awful. The 2nd exp on the other hand was very good.
Gdemami - Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
Charisi I agree with many of the points you listed in your original post. Many of the same were the reasons why I will not be purchasing SW:TOR.
SW:TOR will be a huge success and will have millions of players, but SW:TOR will not be what it could have and should have been.

MMOs were NOT supposed to be about the "majority" and the "cool kids". We were perfectly happy in our geeky nerdom thank you very much. If I hate Blizzard for anything, I hate them for inviting the world to our private party, especially since we did not want the world to crash it. We were having a blast until Blizzard told everyone about MMOs (in how they marketed WoW). Telling us that the "majority rules makes everything OK" is horse manure when it comes to MMOs since they started out as a niche hobby to begin with and some of us are not willing to let it become the next popular fad. Nothing ruins a nerd's hobby like a bunch of cool kids showing up un-invited.
Maybe now you will understand our rage better. We did not want the cool kids here at all.... that's one of many reasons we were playing MMOs in the first place.
So if you are a "cool kid" playing MMOs... you can probably guess how I feel about you playing MMOs and whether you belong here at all...

It is how I play , It is what I enjoy!

Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
