Here is a video where they interview a guy that got to PvP at the fanfest thingie. I know not all combat is PvP, but you might find what he has to say intresting.
I've watched trailers, game play videos, class explination videos, dungeon trailers, etc. I like to think i've watched a majority of whats out there. And as much as I love SWTOR (getting $150 collecters), the fighting seems rather boring, drawl, simply put, boring. Now, this is only my Opinion from videos - that to my knowledge are all early level videos, but there doesn't seem to be much going on
The ranged fighters are just standing back and blasting, there isn't any huge blast, or rain of bombs, there isn't much of anything. the melee is just standing there swinging their lightsaber (which is badass). It all looks fun, but, there just isn't a lot going on. I really hope this is just low level fighting. Granted all our expecations are through the roof, but when it comes down to aspects being better than other aspects, game play should be really flashy and look badass, at this point.
Err... until you've actually logged into the game and played it, it seems that you're "judging the book by it's cover". For all we know, it's an insanely intense clickfest. Or maybe the people recording the videos just aren't very skilled at making compelling videos.
I'm hopeful.
If you expect combat to be different from WoW's or Rift's you are gonna be disappointed. Every SWTOR combat video, even of the devs playing, has players standing in the same spot going over their rotations.
You don't need to play the combat to have a rough idea of how it plays, specially when you've already played combat that looks exactly the same.

Even if Swtor used the theme park WoW model type of combat , it has no auto attack, that's different.
For sure if you watch it in videos you can barely notice that.

Yep, have to agree. Stating that you find a game boring that hasn't released yet is like saying you're already dead from the cataclysm that's going to happen in Dec 2012.
Weird, the pvp combat in Warcraft is one of the most reactionary types there is.
But then again, if you're terrible at it, I would find it boring too.
A post just to get in a ( you're terrible) response is sort of low brow don't you think?
And I was great at WOW pvp myself and it was boring against stupid people not to say that killing them wasnt fun but the combat system itself was hardly brain surgery. What he is saying I think is that this combat system looks like WOWs combat system minus the hard parts.

You should watch these 4 videos, if you havn't already, then lets see what you say:
We've not seen anything above lvl 8 yet, but that 4th video that covers the combat. I don't see how anyone could say that there isn't a lot going on. When a force user is blocking blaster fire and lightsaber attacks all around them and from other enemies while you're fighting another...thats some epic combat with tons going on. I've never seen that amount of action in an MMO before, and it must've been a nightmare to program.
Thanks for those videos they really put the quality of graphics in perspective, so many haters are just willing to jump on any bandwagon without truly forming an opinion for themselves.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"
Everything looks like it's going to be WoW-like combat with slight improvements. If that's too boring then tough, this game will have you bored of combat rather quickly. Lots of people like WoW combat, and I guess they're catering to the masses. The graphics are tons better and of course it's Star Wars...
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...
I would agree that the combat appears boring. I haven't played it yet either, though, so it may feel amazing when I'm behind the keyboard, so I'll reserve my judgement until then. It does certainly look like WoW combat though, and I would be lying if I didn't say that worried me a bit.

What would worry me is if it was the original Bard's Tale style combat. Right now I am neutral to what I see. Personally I would love to know how the powers affect each other in combat.

You are correct, it's very old school theme park dressed up to appear a little modern adding a few jumps and leaps in. It's doing nothing to take the themepark MMO genre forward othe than voice overs and cut scenes you'd expect of a single player game.
I am not saying it is so, or it isn't so. All I say is: game combat, especially of RPGs, is something you have to experience, over some time. It is VERY difficult to judge if you will enjoy it or not by merely watching videos. And RPG, MMO or single player, is no action shooter and no console jump-and-run game.
Watching Everquest combat never was exciting in videos, but I thoroughly enjoyed it for many years. So I share your feeling the SWTOR videos don't make combat seem to be over exciting but as I said, in this case I'd really wait for the game experience.

It is not all about voice over and cut scenes, it's about story, choices and consequences; it's about getting emotionally attached to your character and other players' characters during its leveling process. In this case voice overs help a lot probably.
which themepark MMO does that?

I'm not convinced these "voice overs, cut scenes and choices" are going to dramatically change the gaming experience all that much. It might be good for creating a bit more immersion when you play solo. But when you play in group and what you see happening is exactly the opposite of what you chose and you just have to go along with that choice, then well, we'll have to wait and see how that feels. As far as the choices go they're not all that fundamentally different from chosing whether you want a light force point or a dark force point as a reward for completing the quest. It's really nice fluff, but I hope the game will have more to offer than just fluff.
Waiting for Guild Wars 2, and maybe SWTOR until that time...

I think you are somehow confusing immersion with team decisions. Immersion is when you feel more like a part of what is going on. Team decisions is when everyone gets a choice and someone wins the "toss". Team decisions should not destroy your immersion, but should instead only increase it since you are given a chance to make a choice within the questing other then "Yes, I'll do it" or "No thanks, maybe later". If for some reason the teams decision does ruin your immersion though, you always have the option to jump ship and tell the team you can't go on.
All in all, having a choice in a team will be a lot better than playing "follow the leader" like most games and feel more realistic (immersive) to me. If that isn't a "change in the gaming experience" enough for you then I guess I will just have to wish you luck with whatever game you are looking forward too.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
I had not seen those videos - so thanks for sharing, although they didn't shed to much light on my subject matter. Graphics look awesome, Story progression, innovation, quests. It all looks shweet. And I don't mind "WoW" style combat system, althogh it would be nice from some major over hauls. EQ did the best job IMO of cambat simply - looking - awesome, flashy spells, visable buffs, amazing melee feats. Actually looked like stuff was happening. Thanks for the Article post from Europe, that shed some light
Yeah, they didn't really "jump out" at me either. Nothing I've seen so far seems all that amazing.
I mean, from what I saw, it seems like every time someone gets killed, it's preceded by some "clever" one-line statement. It's as though every interaction that ends with someone's death in ToR plays out like an hommage to the Han Solo/Greedo scene in the Cantina when Han shoots him. It's like BioWare expects us all to be like, "Ohhhhh SNAP! That was cold!!!" when it happens.
Also, with all the hubbub over the more interesting quest system... about "inviting players to pay attention to their choices", "gameplay based on player choices" etc.. That's not "BioWare setting out to change the way Quests are handled in MMOs". That's just BioWare doing what they do in all their games, which just *happens* to be different from what most others are doing.
It's like saying "The CocaCola company has set out to inject some excitement to the rather mundane school lunch experience, by working with schools to start selling CocaCola in the schools' cafeterias. Lunch is about to become much more interesting!"
That wouldn't be CocaCola trying to "inject excitement" into anything. That would be CocaCola doing what they do... selling their product. Doing something different to "twist things up" would be researching and developing a new drink that has never been seen before, that is developed specifically for school cafeterias.
Anyway...
Time will tell about how much people actually care about BioWare's approach to it.
As for players having to pay attention to what's being said... I have absolutely 0 doubt that SWG will fall into the same trap every other MMO does... people don't even pay attention to the story and just pick the choices based on what some Wiki Walkthrough states, to get the desired outcome.
There are some pretty sorry examples of storyline in a number of MMOs that come down to being little more than an excuse to go do something.. However, there *are* a number of excellent, intriguing and very well-written ones in them as well. The problem is, no one would know the difference. At the end of the day, it really comes back to the players... and many players couldn't care less what the storyline is. They just want their reward.
There are many players who only care about one thing: Progressing as fast as possible. They're 100% rewards-driven, and the end result is all that matters.
Everyone's quick to blame it on "horrible storylines", but frankly, I'd wager that most of the people voicing that complaint haven't even read most of the dialog to even know whether it is or not. They're just parroting what others around them are saying. One of the coolest stories they've ever read could be contained in a quest-line story arc... They wouldn't know it, 'cause they'd just click past all that "stupid reading".
I've experienced this first-hand. Someone I used to know who played FFXI claimed that all the storylines sucked, that none of them were worth following, blah blah... One day I was having a conversation about one of the story arcs in the game with my LS and this guy logged in. He didn't say anything at first, but eventually chimed in, "What movie are you talking about? That sounds awesome! Sounds like something I would want to see". When we told him it was one of the story arcs in XI, he was actually surprised. I said "That's what you're missing out on when you just skip through everything".
His reply? "Well, I usually just skip past them in other MMOs because they suck. I figured it would be the same in XI". I asked him in response, "And how do you know all those other games' storylines all suck if you didn't read those either? You might have actually enjoyed some of them". He didn't really answer that.
So.. I applaud BioWare in trying to bring storyline front-and-center in a MMO (though I think they're going a bit too far the other way, personally)... I just hope they're not surprised when they find that many people aren't even paying attention and just picking the "best choices" to get the "optimal outcome" based on some wiki guide.

Yeah, they didn't really "jump out" at me either. Nothing I've seen so far seems all that amazing.
Nothing seems amazing to me either, haven't seen anything from any game in a long time that seemed amazing, morrowind was probably the last game that actually amazed me, but I have found many, many games to be fun since then.
To SB fans, please stop making our demographic look bad.Stop invading threads that have nothing to do with sandboxes.
Unless any of you actual enjoy combat in games like WOW or EQ then you guys are going to be so disapointed.
The only good combat is when you are actively involved in the combat ie aiming the gun at a moving target or blocking then counter striking someone in melee. The kind of combat you get in games like PlanetSide and Darkfall / Mortal Online.
We now know that SWTOR uses the same kind of combat as WOW and EQ so yes the OP is correct this game is
I think this is at the heart of the matter. There seems to be in influx of players who very much desire more fps type combat, more combat where they are in control of every move. If one actually played the original EQ then one can easily see the evolution of this type of combat.
It's not about strafing, blocking, aiming.
Almost as if mmo combat can be lumped into the same genus but not the same species.
This type of combat will not be considered boring by players who have enjoyed the original mmo type combat and have no qualms with continuing playing games with similiar combat.
It's only players who have been steeped in fps type games and who want to explore that type of combat in an mmo who will have issues.
I suppose.

That doesn't look boring to me!
Nothing seems amazing to me either, haven't seen anything from any game in a long time that seemed amazing, morrowind was probably the last game that actually amazed me, but I have found many, many games to be fun since then.

SW:TOR Graphics Evolution and Comparison
SW:TOR Compare MMO Quests, Combat and More...
I suppose.
