Ok I read the article but, I could not get over the vision that was painted for us in this introduction.
MMORPG.com's Isabelle Parsley has donned her flameproof thong and stands ready for the fire to descend given the title of her latest Player Perspectives column.
Please make it stop!
edit:
I'm sure it won't be a groundbreaking Mmorpg but i'm sure it can't be any worse than some of the crap out there that these hack developers call games right now. So i'll play it.
The claim that this is a single player RPG with multiplayer elements is so frustrating. It's been trotted out time and again by detractors and time and again it has been refuted, not only by bioware themselves but by htesters as well as journalists many of whom work for this site.
Gotta agree with you here. That little dig is beyond stale.
Obviously I have my own concerns/criticisms about SWTOR, but anyone pulling out that "single-player RPG" chestnut is clearly either a moron or just trollin'.
There's nothing moronic about saying the game will feel more like a solo RPG than a MMORPG. It's a subjective point of view that many people share, myself included.
There is plenty moronic about it because it's been refuted again and again. The game has social hubs, crafting, a myriad of reasons to group in both normal and raid sized groups, a robust guild system, player housing that allows for other players to visit, a conversation system designed specifically around party dynamics and it's been said over and over again that single player instances make up a tiny fraction of the overall game world.
And before anyone tries to chime in with the fact that TOR is using Champions Online style instances of the same planets which will separate players it should be made very clear that they have said this will be done only as a last resort for the limited time surrounding launch where the majority of the playerbase will be consolidated on 4 planets and that even then it'll be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
It's a subjective point of view, sure, but there is nothing to support that point of view.
Look at the price of the game on your invoice: 54.99, its really 59.99. They subtracted 5 dollars for the pre-order, its not additional. If it was additional, you would have had a total of 64.99, instead of 59.99.
What is shows is you are quick to jump on any assumption, news, info etc, at first glance, without actually doing any digging on it. A band-wagoner :P
Reading an official billing statement shouldn't require interpretation or "digging". And it's patently ridiculous you're trying to argue otherwise. It's an invoice, not a horoscope.
Stop being an apologist.
It shouldn't require someone to point out what would be obvious to the majority of people. If you're complaining about the invoice, then you're looking for something to complain about.
Also, Han was smarter than Greedo, of course he shot first.
Obvious, how?
Look, I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill here, but c'mon. The invoice stated quite clearly the cost of the game was $54.99 and the fee for pre-ordering was $5.00.
You can't fault me for taking the official billing statement from the retailer at face value. That's not jumping to assumptions or being a "band-wagoner".

The total cost on your was $59.99. The total cost of the regular copy is $59.99. You're buying a different product (pre-order product) for the same price as the regular item. Perhaps, since the information was readily available prior to ordering, they didn't feel the need to explain it on the invoice?
This isn't an issue. You are trying to make it an issue. That would be making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

That's NOT how it was listed when I was filling out my order. I remember quite distinctly because it irritated me. Try again.
If you're arguing $5 isn't worth making a huge stink, I'd agree with you.
Furthermore, if you're arguing sloppy, inaccurate syntax in a billing statement isn't worth a fuss, again, I'd (somewhat begrudgingly) agree with you.
However, if you're arguing I should have had intuitive knowledge that outright contradicted what a retailer indicated before, during and after a transaction was placed, you're simply not being reasonable.
then don't play it. don't comment on it, and stop following it's development. go find something that does excite you. why waste your time writing articles on something you don't like.
what a pointless article/thread. i really question the motives for articles and threads on here. it's seems to be more of a competition to see who can stir up the pot the most rather than provide a topic for a productive discussion or interesting information.

The website has the list price as 59.99. I agree that they way they showed it on the billing was a little confusing, as I at first thought they charged me an extra $5 as well.

You were trying to make it out that Bioware or somebody else was charging you $5 extra to get into the game early. This is clearly not true. It would have been obvious if you had used the 'reading comprehension' you referenced earlier. You didn't.
I'm saying had you paid attention before ordering or took the 30 seconds of reading it would have taken after ordering then you would have realized what was going on. You obviously didn't do that. Instead, you took the effort to make a forum post here, which would have taken far longer than actually figuring out what was going on with your order.
The invoice for SW:ToR where you get what you paid for isn't an issue. At all. By all means, keep running with it though.

I have a problem with the combat in this game. It doesn't look that exciting especially the ranged classes. You have a pistol and start ranging your target, within 3 seconds you are closed in on. You then proceed to pump shot after shot into the head of your enemy at the range of 6 inches. If I have a pistol and am shooting something square in the cabeza I should at least 2 shot it, I don't care if it's just a .22. Meanwhile the excitement level of the 12 pew pew pews is 0. There are a couple of videos showing this where they are running around w/ the companion "Blizz." What happens in pvp when you have a Trooper on you and you pull out your water pistol? He is heavily armored and you are doing the same damage at 6 inches as you are at 30 yards. Maybe at point blank, the damage on ranged weapons should at least double, This would make classes/npc's think twice about closing on you so fast. I think the game looks very interesting in alot of ways, but I really think the combat needs some added pizzazz, especially in the ranged area.
The point in posting about something that you find unexciting is the faint hope that someone who is in charge will read it and say, "Hey they are right this does need abit of work." Or are they just making the game for the 50 people sitting in the Bioware office? If not, they should get as much input as possible from their audience before release.

You have not played the game. Watching a vid of gameplay is never going to give you the experience of actually playing. Those who play and report on this, with a variety of classes, say the combat is fun and fast paced. Ranged characters have a close combat tactic or two, even at low levels, that allow them to do some good damage and skip away to get ranged again.
I suggest trying to chat with people who are actually playing or wait until you know some people in the game and ask them.

the problem really is what we see in the video's, which seem to indicate that this type of thing is the case, until the game actually comes out though.. we're probably not going to get confirmation one way or the other.. i hope ranged weapons are handled better than they appear to be in the video's but given the focus on melee weapons (force users) i rather suspect that what we've seen in the video's is exactly what we'll be encountering in the game.

Han shot Greedo one time and killed him. You can't really do that in mmorpg...stuff has to be dragged out a little bit. It's part of that 'classic' mmorpg combat system.
That doesn't mean it can't be fun, but the overall game play is going to win out over logic every time there's a conflict. Logic says a point blank blaster shot to the head will kill pretty much anyone. Game play says you can't do that or the combat will be trivial (always wait for the mob to close distance to you).
There's also the thing that watching mmorpg combat is boring. There's nothing you can do about that. It may be fun to play, but watching it is like mining in Eve. Boh-Rang. Hopefully it is the case that it's fun to play in the game.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
So many posts, and there isn't even a Robert Dinh fellow here to pump some vitality and life into the topic.
I'm impressed!
Oh well. I'm going to admit something sort of weird.
I went into my parent's basement, helping them store some stuff, and... ran across some of my old (Original trilogy) Star Wars toys.
For a little bit, I was really hyped to play SW:ToR. It wore off later in the day, but I guess there's still a part of me that thinks SW used to be pretty damn cool.

I really just don't understand reasoning like this. This is a game, combat needs to have enough length to allow for skill to become a factor, therefore one shotting people just isn't really a reasonable option.
As far as the pace of combat is concerned I think that generally the videos are meant to show off one move at a time but when you combine the 7 or 8 ranged moves that we've seen with the 5 or 6 close quarters moves that we've seen (gadgets for bounty hunter, melee attacks and grenades for troopers, dirty tricks and scattergun for smugglers that the combat is going to have a rich and action-packed feel.
As far as doubling damage at close range is concerned I think that's a fine idea so long as you're willing to extend more than the same benefit to the giant laser sword that should be severing your limbs from your body, but that might not seem fair in game.

Yeah, I understand that. I have watched all the vids too and wondered. People playing have said it is fun though. Ulitmately, your right, we won't know until the game is out.
A release where most gamers are fried on 'same ole' level and gear grind, the industry is RIPE for 'NEW'.
Something other than fantasy as a genre.
All of the above are reasons why people are frothy. I would also have loved to see an SWG2 but I'll take what I can get. I am trying not to get too excited but even the reports from the beta boards seem to be about 90% positive reviews. That is reassuring. At this point, I don't know how they're going to keep the servers up and running the first couple weeks... so if you're MEH about the game, please wait at least a month.
I'd have to write Isabelle that any writer who uses Meh all the time in a gaming article is sending out the wrong signals since the word gained popularity from the Simpsons cartoon series and as an educated adult most try to show that they have moved along from that type of stuff. I guess at least there aren't any "D'oh" words on view...
A revealing phrase was:
"If there were a magic formula then Blizzard wouldn’t have been the only ones to hit upon it and we’d have a dozen WoW-sized successes by now. "
That magic is surely lost now as WoW is losing hundreds of thousands of subs per quater now, though I guess maybe the rhetoric may have something to do with some of the front page advertising.
Why not just judge the game when it comes out, and if it is not for you simply quietly move along. If the game is a total waste then it will surely fail as many have, but if it has something it will surely last. You don't need to be one with the Force to know this is true.
Ok so maybe I am more in the minority for the morning crowd, but come on this is bioware. They made KoTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, Dragon Age. The developer know how to put a shine on a good RPG.
LOL, well at least one of the games you named wasn't a total failure, although the KOTOR sequels were garbage. Bioware's been riding on their name for waaaay too long, and don't forget that half the time its not really Bioware, but Obsidian or some other pack of second-rate devs with Bioware's name on it.
This thread exists why? This is like making a WoW doesn't excite me thread. Just because WoW has the highest "payed" subscriber count even if you exclude the 7million Chinese subscriptions that stay active regardless of play. Just because something is hyped or big doesn't mean everyone in a genre should like it. One thing that will keep the Eastern crowd away is the fact that it is Star Wars and it has never appealed as highly as Blizzard products or cute cats. May not excite ya Isabelle, but it shouldn't have to excite ya, and it is good that it isn't. A game that fits everyones taste is sure to be boring bland and tasteless.

the problem really is what we see in the video's, which seem to indicate that this type of thing is the case, until the game actually comes out though.. we're probably not going to get confirmation one way or the other.. i hope ranged weapons are handled better than they appear to be in the video's but given the focus on melee weapons (force users) i rather suspect that what we've seen in the video's is exactly what we'll be encountering in the game.

I was always more of a Star Trek (original series) fan, Star Wars was cool up to ESB and I lost real interest after that.
That said, I am very interested to see how Bioware does with this offering.
I can't say I'm "foaming at the mouth" about SWTOR but am excited thst Bioware has entered the arena and hope they do well.
Had it been a Mass Effect MMO I'd have a fanboi hat on though for certain.
Star Wars
Bioware
A release after 5 years of carrot dangling.
No bitchers.
"The great thing about human language is that it prevents us from sticking to the matter at hand."
- Lewis Thomas
Meh.
