Yeah I saw when they did that. I don't know why people insist on pitting these two games against each other. I could see pitting SWTOR against other p2p games, but not a single MMO in history ever has, or ever will, stop people from also spending money on their console games, which are a one-time payment (not including DLC, ofc). GW2, not a console game, but also still a one-time payment, so there's nothing stopping people from owning it and whatever $15 a month game they desire. GW2 is not worried about competition because they won't have any, that's not how they'll be making their money.
People will be playing those other games, but there's a good chance they'll own GW2 as well. All the fanbois that come into GW2 threads shouting about other games seem more worried about the impact GW2 will have on their game's fanbase than anything else. Doesn't speak well about the confidence you have in your game.
Exactly. There's no competition between the two games because they are two different types of games. You said it very well and I don't have anything to add to that

What is your purpose here NMStudios? Why are you so upset?
ArenaNet has their own schedule of development and now closed beta is on that list. What in the world does this have to do with another game and another developer?
lol Upset? Hardly.
Companies pay attention to their competition, that's normal. I simply do not believe that their timing is anything but strategy. I also believe that it was a poor decision on their part, because the hype for SWTOR is just too big.
I'm not upset, I'm not complaining, just commenting.
I think you are paranoid, or chasing windmills.
If you have followed GW2 for any length of time then you would know that 1.) the last profession would be announced before any beta announcement and 2.) they would annouce the closed beta before the end of this year. So does it make sense it to announce it now or at Christmas time?
And besides, this closed beta means nothing to everyone here except make it an official milestone in the games development. It has nothing to do with any other game. All they are doing is following their own schedule. And besides, didn't SWTOR change their early access days like a week ago anyway? Really you are seeing something that is not there at all.
So, they planned to announce it right before early access, but were thwarted by BioWare's moving it up a couple of days? Is that what you're saying? I think you're right, because it would have been a lot more news worthy and gotten a lot more notice that way, where right now during the early access frenzy it just gets lost in the swarm.
Umm maybe because someone released the mesmer info way ahead of schedule? But i am sure that was all planned out in advance too.
Seems to me they have been just playing catch up to the leak. But, oh well, i am sure people see what they want to in anything.
Sounds like a sad attempt to steal thunder from the SWTOR launch, just as it was with the release of the final class. A failed attempt, actually.
I doubt its an attempt to steal thunder from anyone...Let's look at how many MMO Releases have gone by without GW2 interfering with them....quite a few. Not to mention Arenanet isn't one to just go picking fights with everone. "Oh you're releasing your game when? Okay let me put this out real quick..." To be honest, and not to step on any toes, that's more Blizzard's style. "What GW2 just put out a trailer?? Quick make one for Cataclysm!!" Joking aside, They released the class in a hurried manner, yes. But they did it because we were starved...and we demanded it from them. It had been quite some time since we had any [interesting] information from them about anything....aside from cinematic conversation upgrades...but lets be honest; Mesmer > Cinematic upgrades.
But like i said Arenanet isn't trying to steal thunder from anyone...they're not even directly competing with anyone (atleast not openly). Like somebody.........
I think we know who I'm talking about ^_~...
Arenanet pretty much keeps to themselves...and just want to make the best game they possibly can and that strategy has turned out perfectly for them thus far. Try to fight a giant and he'll step on you...sit down and make a pair of stilks and a lazer guyn....and the giant starts to question the food chain. Anyone notice Blizzard playing some tricky hands? Mists of Pandaria.
Lets be honest...no matter how you look at that (in technicolor or 8-bit) it will always look like Blizzards attempt to save itself. It's been said 1000 times but...
SERIOUSLY??? PANDAS???
That aside...GW2 has nothing to worry about. Them giving us beta is a good thing, open or closed. And the release of the mesmer class was far from sad...I felt a great disturbance in the ping ...as if thousands of GW fans rejoiced and prematurely ejaculated...the mess was unprecedented.
MMO's are the ark of the gaming world. Let it take us in new directions.

I lol'ed
I'm the hardcore player, the one that rushes lvl cap before you even finish the starting area.
Looks like 200,000 accounts created on the first day. Nice try.
Well, it is unfair to compare WoW's launch to SWTOR. As you may be aware WoW launched only in the US on that day so those 240k accounts were in the US alone.
Anyway War and AoC had more preorders than SWTOR.

family and friends beta. now close this thread.
ya cause your SWTOR analogy was a much better thread, lawls.....
Anyways a good step forward to know that closed beta has begun, no matter how exclusive the list of invited people might be.
In my opinion.
If they are serious about Competitive PVP they should launch the open beta only in the form of "hot joinable" pvp, as soon as possible.
To detect possible problems with the balance of classes.
