I think this is the first time I've really paid attention to forums like these during the release of a big property game like this. Is it always this hilarious?
I seriously encourage everyone to sue, sue, sue. A fool and his money...
Yes it is. I read similar topics when Rift launched and one had to use credit card or debit card in order to able to play. Same thing during CO and STO release day.

I hear ya lol... I come here hoping to read up into some intelligent debate's and conversation which seems to be quite rare at times.
Just to be clear, you get the first 30 days for free, right? Like you paid the 60 bucks, you get 30 days free with that, and if you want, you can cancel before the 30 days are up and never once have to pay 15 dollars in subscription fees. Is all of this correct? If so then this is a pretty small problem - just cancel your subscription before the 30 days are up. Problem solved.
You are right. When you use paypal or credit card to set up 30 day sub they don't charge you anything. Once your account is activated remove your credit card and you can play for 30 days.
we ll see i just went to my local walmart and baught this game AND time card if they ever ask me a credit card number even with a pre-paid card ,ea can forget my existance in this life!

If you setup a subscription, you can skip having to actually pay for it if you don't want to pay after the first 30 days of game time that comes with the game. You would just cancel your subscription before it actually comes due.
I don't agree with requiring a subscription or a game time card as being 'right'. However, in my particular case it would be a non-issue since I'll be playing for more than the 30 days provided with the game purchase.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
What bothers me is I have 30 days of game time on my account....
Why am i forced to sign up for a sub today when i dont need it? Maybe i'll be bored with the game in 30 days and wont want to play it anymore and then i'll just have to cancel this sub.
But the main thing that gets me is the fucking wait time.... Ive been sitting on the site now for near 45 mins in the "waiting room" so i can put my sub informatin in on an account that has 30 days of game time available in it so i can use my vacation i took to play the game....
Instead im wasting it writing this forum post and sitting in the waiting room on the swtor website.
There is no reason I should be forced to have an active subscription today if i still have gametime on my account.
Usually the reason to do this, along with defaulting you to auto-renew, is to catch a few people asleep at the wheel and squeeze an extra month out of them if they forget to cancel. Although, I don't know if this is the case with this system.
I can see them asking you to identify yourself to play on their servers, but I don't think that requiring payment information up front when you aren't actually paying for anything, is very legitimate. But it's their field so it's their rules. They can ask you to jump through any hoops they want. Next time, be more wary of dealing with them.
I was going to leave it at that, but then I just read this:
ALL MMO's do this. Its standard procedure and completely legal. It says all over the place that a subscription is required to play, and if you are buying a P2P MMO, what did you expect??
Yes, 30 days free game time comes with the box, but you are still required to subscribe to the service. It is a subscription based service and if you dont have an active subscription you cant play. The fact that they give you 30days free is irrelevant to this.

Any one familiar with business law please tell me if there is a solid foundation for this ?
There is no law issue nor there is a foundation.
First of all, no one is forcing you to spend another subscription fee on top of what you have paid already. You only need to setup subscription plan and then you can cancel the subscription immediately if you wish. You will be not charged.
The reason is that the retail keys are not the same as regular game time codes. One is purchasing the game, the other adds game time to already purchased game.
Could it be done more 'comfortably' and friendlier? Maybe. However this is how pretty much any MMO work - for reasons described above(at least how I see it). It is a standard business practice and no more than 'technical gimmick'.
A subscription doesnt automatically mean you also have to enter payment details.
When you download a trial for a MMO, a subscription is also required. Its very rare nowadays that it also requires you fill in payment information though.
So the OP does have a point. No matter if you see those 30 days as free, a trial or a fancy GTC. As long as you havent decided to stay after those first 30 days, you shouldnt have to fill in payment details. There is simply no excuse for that other then the hope that you wont hit the cancel button after filling in your payment details.
You cant even compare 'all MMO's' to this. Some MMO's let you download the client without charging you and then its of course obvious that you need to pay right away for your subscription if the game is P2P. This is because you didnt pay anything yet.
Also, some of you are still acting as if you actually bought something when buying the box or a digital copy. But all it is, is your entry fee and first month of subscription if it comes with 30 days. So it stands to reason that your game key should act as some fancy GTC. No additional payment details should be required untill you decide to stay after.
The fact that most MMO companies do this, doesnt mean shit. If enough users complain about this to make an impression with those large gaming companies then there is a chance that they will change this. It will not change if you start surpressing your own doubts about this of course.
Just because the OP isnt used to this, doesnt mean he doesnt have a point. Maybe because he isnt used to this, he is able to look at this practice with fresh eyes. And he convinced me.

its like buying food at a restaurant : forking out cash even before you get in there, then paying full price before you get to enjoy the low quality of this steaming turd of a game.
while the dish is ready in the kitchen, suddenly you need to give them your credit card so they can charge you at a later date, -should you make the mistake of walking to there direction.
I for one had little repsect for this game in beta, buying this turd just to play with friends, for the love of god bring out GW2 or any next gen MMO.
This game is near ready for Beta and its officially, people have been mentioning bugs like the UI for months and nothing happens, -this tub of shit will loose 50% of the players in 6 months.
This ppl is what happens when you let a monkey use a PC, be warned, NEVER let your pets near your PC's.
i dont mind behing forced to buy 1 time card to access the free 30 days it has been like that for ages ,but the way people say here it sound like it asked their credit card number even with a pre-paid (unless i mis interpreted what they meant)
People need to read the fine print (Yeah and they're making it mighty tiny these days). Stop being cattle and letting companies get away with poor practices by rewarding those practices. Caveat Emptor.

Yes, there is.
How else you want to determine active and inactive account?
Newly purchased or re-occurring subscription, you still need to make exactly same steps to keep active subscriber status.
Retail keys and GTC are not the same thus they are not interchangeable like in cases of no purchase fee.
Just another person who KNEW they hated a game, then went out and spent money on it anyway, and then got mad because they did. A fool and his money....... nothing to see here, move along.

This...
... it is the lure of the Dark Side :-P
Ok so DAoC does this, and a lot of MMO's even UO I believe did this too.
Requiring you to set up a subscription before you can play your free month does 3 things.
#1. Allows them to make sure that the person playing is over 18 or has a parents permission.
#2. Allows the stress on their billing system to be eased up a bit because the people putting in codes are not all doing it on the same LAST MINUTE.
#3. Does not effect you in any way shape or form or charge you money or even wind up causing any problems what so ever.
so whats the problem?
Add your Sub infomation, then UNSUBSCRIBE. You can still play your free month, and if you want to play longer then RE SUB when you choose to do so.
OR you could go on the forums, over react, call people names and stuff. I mean its up to you.
The title is false and extremely misleading.
