yet another Im angry post by someone who wants to try and smear this game for there own flawed reasons.
Ok every new mmo that comes in a box you buy with the exception of guild wars and a few others requires a subscription. Many of the f2p games out now started out as a subscription game. Its called recuring revenue streams. There is no money to be made in stand alones with free updates and new maps and content where the company making the product is not making money to pay devs to do these things. Look at some of the most popular fps games with multiplayer how many are run on a server supplied by the company., not many. most are private servers thus some one else is paying for it.
Now having to put in a method of payment, cc or game card has been around along time. When I first picked up eq I had to do this as with coh, ultima, wow, and other games. Its just how it is. It is sop, standard operating procedure. Now does it feel like double dipping, duh this has been a debate since the golden age of mmo's Which is why guild wars became so popular.
Now on to out dated mechanics, tab target and kill....well guess what people that method is the most excepted combat system, considering you take all the subscribers of games that use this and you get well over 50 million playes, this is not including f2p games that use it. So guess what your a small voice on the internet speaking out of lack of creativity. If people wanted creativity then games like conan or hellgate or earth and beyond and fallen earth would have been huge sucesses, But guess what THEY WEREN'T. Why cause people want something they can easily play for enjoyment. When Final fantasy changed how combat went in there console based games Sale of that title shrunk. Most of my gamer friends began to even look else where. Kinda sad to be honest, But every few months there is always some forum troll wanting to rage over some new game that uses tried and true mechanics as a basis to smear a game they dont like cause it took away player base from one they do like....Boohoo. It happens.
If you dont want to play games like this cool awesome there is always console games.
However to come on a forum and just show your anger and ignorance cause boohoo its not something new and try to ruin the game content for others with shameful claims of fraud is just sad...
OP don't listen to the fan boys, this practice is pointed since years and have no reason other than pushing you to sub. Some will claim it is to reduce cheating, but we all know it's bs since any computer game work on codes and there is no reason mmo are different. As other said, just cancel your subscription as soon as you made it, the first month is for free.
And honestly now they made an effort since they accept a lot more ways to subscribe like debit cards. They used to accept only international credit card few years ago. If you don't have any mean to sub and don't want to, yes you most definitely can return it, especially if it is not written on the box (i'm pretty sure it is not tbh, but just check). I don't know if your local seller will take it back, but in front of a court you can be sure you'll get the right to do so, even if you leave in the most remote country. But as always who on hearth will deal with a court for those little commercial abuse. If you call Bioware and explain them, they will probably take it back, just so they won't loose a customer, its common practice.
Its just how it is. It is sop, standard operating procedure.
1. That is not true, period. I've experienced WOW, LOTRO and AoC in the past three years and in all three cases I've got what I paid for without further delaying. When the 30 days purchased with the game were over, the account got frozen and I needed to select a payment method and this is the proper way how this should work.
2. Even if it is true - wth? They have no right to ask me for my credit card number before they need to be paid and I simply refuse to play as they whistle. Not speaking about the fact that if you want to use prepaid cards you need to pay them NOW.
So what they do is absolutely not right and I'm not going to accept it as some "usual way how to do it" without further questions.
If they stated explicitly they will want more cash or my credit card number to let me havfe what I paid for I'd never buy the game.
AND PLEASE - stop with these degradatory remarks aimed at people who would not accept this scam.
Ask yourselves why we MUST give them our credit card numbers before flaming others who do not feel like it:
"It's a story about an experiment with 5 monkeys. The 5 monkeys were kept in a cage with a ladder. Some bananas were kept on the top of the ladder. Whenever one of the monkeys would climb the ladder to get the bananas, all the monkeys were sprayed with ice cold water. Soon, the monkeys begin to police thmeselves, and would prevent any other monkey from climbing the ladder. Eventually, the cold water was turned off, but the monkeys kept policing themselves. Then, one monkey was removed, and another monkey put in it's place. Sure, the monkey didn't know about the forbidden bananas (must be rotten by now), so when it tried to get the banana, the other monkeys would stop him. Soon, the new monkey started policing the other monkeys too. Eventually, one by one all the monkeys were replaced in the group, but the monkeys kept policing themselves, even though none of the original monkeys weren't there and the reason for policing themselves was not existent."

1. That's your opinion. Obviously analysts have determined that enought people find the requirement to renew manually at that point annoying enough, or the profit from people forgetting to cancel a renewing subscription profitable enough, to make it this way.
2. Obviously they do have a right. What do you think things like "credit card required to play" and "active subscription required" on MMO boxes means? If you don't like, you were hardly forced to buy the game at gunpoint. And if you don't like pre-paid cards, don't use them.
3. This scenario does not fit the definition of a scam. Read what it says on the box for heaven's sake.
I swear, people need to stop whining about EA enforcing standard terms that are printed on the fricking box.
"Everyone playing MMO's accepts that you have to give your cc details upfront to get your free 30 days of play". Damn right they do, else they would not be playing any MMO, would they ? They might not like it, but they "accept" it, they have no alternative.
"So, stop crying and just give us your cc details already. Remember, you can cancel at any time (offer subject to conditions). Oh, btw, would you like some more KoolAid ? "
In the early days of mobile phones, "commonly accepted" practice was to make the user sign a 12 or 24 month contract that they had to pay in full. You could not cancel it. You could stop using the phone, but you still had to pay all your contractually agreed payments. There was massive demand for these new toys, and few suppliers, so they could set any conditions they felt like. Those conditions were "commonly accepted" (but universally hated) because not accepting them meant... no phone.
As the mobile phone industry grew and more suppliers entered the market, these restrictive practices went the way of the dinosaur.
The "commonly accepted" business model in any industry is established by those that provide the services. If there is limited competition, then the business models are usually heavily skewed in favour of the service providers, not the consumer. Companies only give up their advantage (restrictive contracts, higher prices, skimpy customer service) once competitors move in and start stealing their captive audience by offering more choice and better value. That is just how the world works.

You do realize that this isn't a contract, or even a charge, but just setting up a charge to happen in a month, that you can immediately cancel so it never actually takes place, right?

Ok its printed on the box, fare. Still, what Fext say is pretty damn true. This practice is pointed since years, and the few last gen mmo did made an effort about this, and some don't require you to put your cc info and subscribe for the 1r month. And yes this was done because people wanted this to change, not because those companies decided it was better that way suddenly. Now the fact Swtor is a "traditional mmo" with all the crappy traditions too, thats an other story. If you think this kind of practice is defendable and like it in the back, that's your choice.

Customer: "So I can start playing without having actually paid for a subscription ?"
Service: "Yes, as long as you agree to pay in future."
Customer: "So "paid subscription required to play game" is not literally true then ?"

It's pretty simple. If the concept that you are required to have a valid method of payment on file to play the game is too complicated for some people to understand, that's unfortunate, but I guess IQ is a bell curve distribution.

The thing is the payement method is not required, as stated the game and the subscription is already payed at least for a month. It is required because some mmo company force you to do so, thats the only reason.

You need a separate bank account for games and subscriptions so you can transfer the money back and forth and keep the balance at 0 when you need to.
Also don't pre-order or buy MMOs at release again.
Perhaps it's because with slicing it would be stupid to buy gold.

Nobody is being forced to subscribe. What on earth are you talking about?
Yup, read what's printed on the fricking box
"...AND PAID SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED TO PLAY GAME. 30-DAY SUBSCRIPTION INCLUDED WITH PURCHASE."
Perfectly clear, isn't it ?
I mean, c'mon, nobody could misunderstand that could they ?
I'm glad I could clear your confusion up for you.
Especially the part "Valid Credit Card....Required To Play Game" so confusing.... Whats That about...
Yes you are read the box "subscription required to pay the game".
You are required to have a valid method of payment, and a subscription interval choice on file at all times to play the game.

WEll my sarcasm button wasnt working apparently.. so... that was sarcasm....
Oh, that's good, I was wondering about that. But you know these forums, you can never be sure if people are kidding or deadly serious.
You didn't clear anything dude. Read the box "paid subscription is required to play the game" then on the same line "30-day subscription included". So isn't the subscription already payed?[mod edit]
True, my bad, shoulda put the '/sarcasm off' tag line like the cool kids do.
Customer: "I have a 30-day subscription included with my purchase, but I can't play the game, whazzup ?"
Service: "Sir, you need a PAID subscription to play SWTOR. It says so clearly on the box."
Customer: "Oh okay, so I have to pay and then I get a free 30-days added ?"
Service: "No sir, you have to agree to pay in future, then you can start playing immediately. But you can cancel that agreement at any time in the first 30 days."
Customer: "So I can start playing without having actually paid for a subscription ?"
Service: "Yes, as long as you agree to pay in future."
Customer: "So "paid subscription required to play game" is not literally true then ?"
Service: "It's complicated... "
It is required because some mmo company force you to do so, thats the only reason.
lol
