Is this even an MMO ?

GrailerGrailer Member UncommonPosts: 893

I just moved from RIFT to SWTOR and I totally regret even buying this game now .

It feels worse than RIFT and WOW , they have taken a huge step backwards in game play . Sure the story cutscenes are great but the actual game is pure garbage .

I quit WOW years ago so I definately wouldnt want to play that game again with a new skin .

Nothing feels right , the animation feels jerky and broken . The quests are shallow and the entire world feels instanced ( probably because it is ) .

I never connected to my character like I did back in EQ days when the thought of possibly dying bought excitement and fear of going into a new dungeon or area .

It's nearly 2012 and this is how far we have come ? We have gone backwards .

So now what? I guess I just have to wait for GW2 to come out or Diablo3 ?

Should have done your homework before buying. it's not like there hasn't been a wealth of information available to let you know what the game would be like...  Caveat Emptor!

So basically what everyone said was going to happen happened? You can manage to make a qq thread, but ignore tons of threads details flaws and positives in this game + completely ignore a open beta even I managed to get into?

Well anyways. Rift is doing ok and Deepwood server would be happy to have you.

I am on the same boat has you,

This is exactly what i thought when i first try it. ( on beta )

I guess its not for everyones else and i am sure people will disagree with us .

Its a Good MMO but its not my cup of Tea.

From what I have seen in gameplay videos, the game just looks kinda choppy with its animations and the it just seems like a generic mmo put into the star wars world. I think i'll sit out for the SWTOR craze and wait for GW2 which looks reaaaally good.

  • dubyahitedubyahite Member UncommonPosts: 2,483
It's definitely an mmo. That's a silly question.

    The Secret World - Dragons

    Planetside 2 - Terran Republic

    Tera - Dragonfall Server

Funny, my experience has been the opposite.

WoW I got bored with pretty quickly... click, quest, accept, kill, turn-in, reward... rinse, repeat.

RIFT I got bored with even more quickly... WoW in a different setting, nothing new at all.

SW:TOR I have been playing since the first day of early access (plus during beta) and I'm enjoying it thoroughly.  Questing with a purpose makes it so much better than other "themeparks" that I've played.  I feel like I'm playing out a part in my own movie.  I'm actually attached to my character.  I think the animations are far superior to those in any MMO except ultra-realistic ones like AoC, and I can forgive them for not being "ultra realistic" because the game is supposed to be a bit fantastic/sci-fi to begin with.

So... I guess it's all just a matter of opinion.  Right now the only game that's ever been bigger is WoW.  I doubt SW:TOR will ever surpass WoW, but I doubt that any other MMO will ever take the 2nd spot away from SW:TOR.  Of course there's no way to know that for at least 6-12 months... so we'll see!

Telling you guys make it 10 times bigger then it needs to be and people will think that = content. That is the real WoW formula.

All I can say is totally the first setence of the quote, I cant belive how people can feel entirely so different about something but I would imagine you have burned your self out on playing WOW I Would assume even though I played WOW for years too, but I know when a good thing has passed, nothing last forever.

Iv played tons of mmos, the point of this game wasnt suppose to be ground breaking in terms of quest structure, you should have known that.  I think the gameplay is silky smooth and even if everything else in the game sucked even the role playing VO's, the gameplay is fun as hell.  Slashing away at dozens of enemys with my duel sabered sentinel will never get old.

More than 128 players on a persistant server online at the same time is a MMO.

Sure, TOR have less people on the screen than most other MMOs but it have more than a CORPG and they are still a sub class to MMOs.

I felt the same way about the game feeling instanced-- till I realized that the first TEN levels are a tutorial of sorts, to teach you your character. Once you hit 10, and move on to other places.. Its definately NOT instanced!. There ARE instances that are like dungeons, but every game has instanced dungeons now days ( EQ1 is the only execption to that rule way back in the day) that you and your group venture through.

Once you hit the capital and move on out-- you see people lfg for this and for that--- its definately an MMO :)

Obviously, you never made it past 10.. the solo, learn your character, tutorial zone?

It feels worse than RIFT and WOW , they have taken a huge step backwards in game play .

Fallacy 1: Assuming that there is one line of "progression" for combat systems that all MMOs can be placed on, and that it's actually possible to take a "step backwards"

Sure the story cutscenes are great but the actual game is pure garbage .
I quit WOW years ago so I definately wouldnt want to play that game again with a new skin .

Fallacy 2: Saying the game is just WoW with a new skin without any evidence. And to top it off, saying that even though the sentence before you clearly indicated that you felt the game had a unique combat system

Nothing feels right , the animation feels jerky and broken .

Fallacy 3: Blaming the game for your archaic computer not being able to display the incredibly smooth animations properly

The quests are shallow and the entire world feels instanced ( probably because it is ) .

Fallacy 4: Using the word "instanced" even though you clearly do not understand what the term means (why else would you call the entire game instanced?)

I never connected to my character like I did back in EQ days when the thought of possibly dying bought excitement and fear of going into a new dungeon or area .

Fallacy 5: Giving way too much credit to a game that clearly impressed you simply because it was one of the first MMOs you encountered death penalties in rather than any innovative game features it had

It's hard for me to feel sympathy with these people who have the nerve to make another hate thread while putting so little effort in to prove their point. If the graphics are so bad, or the design is so similar to WoW, please feel free to take screenshots or movies and actually prove your point.

I do not get it tbh,.All the info of what swtor was and is was available for months,.They had a open beta pretty much mmog, massively and alot of other sites had tons of keys to give away anyone could have gotten in to check the game out.

Far as the instancing goes alot of mmogs use that tech swtor isn't the first to use it or will be the last AoC uses it Dungeons and Dragons,Eq2,Lord of the Rings online began to use it a few months ago it is to try to give players a good experience.People would bitch if they were waitin in line to kill quest mobs(wow releases and expansions) even WoW has done it somewhat with phasing,.

Sayin it is a rip off of any other game imo is pretty silly all mmogs share most similarties WoW sure copied alot from other mmogs and still do. take a look at there panda talent tree for upcoming expansion then go look at the eq2 talen tree and tell me where they got that idea same for there achievement book which was pretty much ripped from WAR.

I like SWG I think it has brought back storytelling better  than any other mmog has on the market I think people have forgotten they are called rpg for a reason. Can you recall what you did your first 10 lvls or WoW? Can you remember the story/lore from you WoW character? Some can but I bet you 99% cannot.. But I bet you most ppl who are playing and enjoying SWTOR can remember there characters storyline. To each there own but I am lovin it I still have my Wow account open not planning to quit WoW it is good mindless fun I dunno why some ppl feel they gotta swear allgience to one game or the other  it's okay to like and or play multiple games even mmogs.

You can make the same argument for every MMO since EQ. Lets face it. EQ was the best and nothing will top it.

I find it funny you think GW2 and Diablo 3 will be any less of a de-evolution in gaming.

Reminds me of a much larger Guild Wars with all the instancing it does.

OK this is either horribly misinformed, or you're just trying to mislead folks.

Guild Wars is entirely instanced except for central quest hub areas.  Then you're 100% on your own unless you group up.

SW:TOR is 90% + an open world, and very rarely uses instances... specifically it uses them for some portions of class quests, and for flashpoints.

Yeah but when you complain about something, you don't necessarily have to be accurate. Just close enough. Using the word "close" loosely of course

So if he's in the minority why do you guys care lol?

I mean someone earlier said he's in a miority as if it's fact in which it honestly isn't but naysayers are always in the minority, they were the minority in WoW,Rift,AOC,Aion, and so on.

To be honest I hate it when people use the word "minority" too. Nobody has any factual numbers to actually back such a claim up so it seems stupid at best

Hey grown men listen up. Put it on your thick skull that you WILL NEVER, EVER EVER, feel the same way you felt the first time you played an MMO. You say we are going backwards? or are you just stupid to see that its part of our humanity that once we tried or tasted something, we expect even more of the next that should come our way.

Yes you played EQ, you never felt something so grandeur and happy while playing it. You then played WoW which gave some unique features, but after playing it for so long that you are so attached to it that once you've played a different one you expect more.YES! You do expect more! but don't yap about telling the WHOLE WORLD that we are going backwards in the MMO Genre because if you stop being childish and act like an adult and be open-minded, you'll see how innovative EA and Bioware is w/ this game.

You want a solution? either stick to your CUP OF TEA MMO or just stop playing MMO 'cause you WILL NEVER, again, NEVER feel the same way you felt when you played your first MMO.

I think it's just different strokes for different folks.

For me, the story doesn't excite all that much.  I think it's mainly because I've been playing RPGs since the old SSI gold box games, and having played so many, I easily tire of cliche plot elements.  I'm kind of like a jaded critic when it comes to RPG plots.  When someone tells me that their son has been kidnapped by bandits who are holed up in some nearby dungeonesque building and they need to rescue him, I die a little inside.

Don't get me wrong, I like (maybe even love) a great RPG story, but most of SWTOR's sidequests are very cliche.  And you typically spend a lot of time doing sidequests.  So I just find myself disinterested in them.  Some of the main class storylines that I've seen are interesting, but some are cliche as well.

My friend on the other hand, loves the story aspects of SWTOR.  So it's really just a matter of taste I think.
