Now what about the other 20-30 key you can bind with a keyboard around WASD? What about gaming keyboards that have more and macro functions? My Naga mouse has 17 programmable buttons, where ya gona fit that on the controller? Also what you have there will work but the response time will be a little slower then a mouse and keyboard. Only advantage a controller has is running circles around people. Function is not the problem, be equal to a keyboard and mouse never. Equal to a gaming mouse and keyboard imposable. Then tell console gamers they need to buy a mouse and keyboard to play it on their console and the sale turn into nada.
Yeah but that's irrelevant.
It doesn't matter how many keys you have on your keyboard if the game doesn't need them. 17 programmable buttons on your mouse? Well GW2 only have 10 skills and then maybe some supplementary F1-F5 ones. So what are the other buttons for? And what about all the buttons on your keyboard?
This isn't an argument of whether a controller can ever offer the versatility that a keyboard and mouse can in general...I think we know the answer to that question. This is an argument of how well GW2 can work on a controller. If GW2 doesn't have a need for the 30 keys on your keyboard and the 17 buttons on your mouse, then they aren't relevant.
Do you even know what macros are and the HUGE advantage they give an MMOer? If you cant see the advantage a keyboard and mouse gives with keybinding and macros and the even bigger advantage a gaming mouse and keyboard has I am not even gona try. I will just say you take 2 people of equal skill, one uses a controller and give one the gamer mouse and keyboard the later will win every time.
You're missing the point...
It's not about whether the game can be played better on a keyboard and mouse. It's can the game be played in an ENJOYABLE manner on a controller.
As I understand, console gamers and PC gamers will be on different servers. So it doesn't matter that PC gamers will have an advantage because of their control mechanism.
Do you see XBOX BF3 players bitching and moaning about PC BF3 players? No! Of course you don't, because they aren't playing against them.
So long as the game is FUN on consoles, it doesn't matter that PC gamers have all these crazy macros.
I would definitely buy this game for PC no matter what.
Right now I'm more intrigued than anything else by the idea that it might also come to consoles. No everreaction, the only good console MMO was FFXI and the UI was a mess, DCUO and & FFXIV where both shit.
MMORPGs are a PC genre, i won't support developers trying to cash in and bring even more soccer moms to an already casual saturated genre.
Hey but life is good, it's my opinion, you can still buy the game and enjoy it, i just don't want to have anything to do with consoles, they are the cancer of gaming, already screwed up FPS and turned them into crap, and they will slowly do the same with MMORPGs.

That how DCU-Online started. Console gamers on one server and PC on another. The console gamers didnt have a large enough poll of players to make it work so they stuck bother together. The unofficial forums is filled with rants of unbalanced gaming. If the game comes out on consoles in 2014 how many new people do you think it will draw? Enough to make a stable server? How many time zone dose that cross? It would have to be a large influx of new gamers and that does not normally happen on a MMO 2 years old. Maybe if they shared the same release date.
Just because some game is multiplatform, doesn't mean it has to have the same UI, unless developers are lazy to adjust it to the platform.
Also if this news are true, i wouldn't expect it to come on ps3/xbox before late 2013.
Its not about lazy its about fair. How can you give one set of gamers more options on their UI that gives advantages in combat, crafting so on and so on and not another that pays the same amount. Now its PC gamers win more because they have a mouse. If you have played any console MMOs that run on PCs as well you would get it. Go download DCU-Online and see if you like the UI. Within 10 levels you will want to quit. This is a sad day if its true. Even if Anet says that they will have 2 UIs in the end they will need to nerf the PC UI for balance sake when people freak out and they will.
Please, you guys are just blowing stuff out of proportion. It's quite easy to map GW2 control scheme to a console controller without sacrificing balance or whatever it is you're afraid of. In fact I've just gone ahead and made a set-up that just might work;
Looks pretty nice, but wouldn't it feel kind of icky to have to double tap that pad to dodge?
It does feel slightly weird but it works. I've played games where it works like that.
what about the jump ?
I guess that seals it. The back button is for jumping.

If a game allows their users to use macros, it is a design flaw. Through macroing, you can use advanced programs which can in theory automate the whole game for you. I don't see any justifiable reason why any game should allow botting and since you can bot through decent macros, I don't see why they would should allow macroing either.
Nobody reads anymore. They have no plans of making a console version. I swear the console community is destroying the PC gaming world. Keyboard and mouse always triumphs over a controller unless you are playing a racing game. The graphics would be terrible on the console and visibility range would be similar to that of PSO.
I totally used to think this way, then I got older and got a job where I sit at a computer for 8 hours a day. My neck hurts, my back hurts, when I go home I want to play games but the last thing I want to do is lean forward on the chair to use a keyboard and mouse.
So if possible, I almost always play PC games with a 360 controller. I can lean back, get comfortable...it's just such a relief.
Yes, mouse and keyboard are more precise, but they are also more taxing for "old" people (read, over 30) to use.
So really, I would LOVE if GW2 had a controller option on the PC. If I'm playing competitively, I would use mouse and keyboard for sure, but it's nice to be able to just lean back and relax sometimes.
+1 to this brother.
I will be 39 next month and after 8+ hours a day at a computer for work....xbox 360 controller+Recliner=Win.
I play all my single player PC games like this, The ones that support a controller at least.
Ah PC gamer snobs - never cease to induce the LOLs.
I was going to play GW2 on my PC with a controller anyway if I could.
Ask a game developer with experience developing for all 3 "major" platforms - PC, 360, PS3 which is the least annoying.
360 > PC > PS3.
360 because of excellent support from MS including the XNA and dev kits etc.
PC is 2nd because they have to design for a wide variety of hardware where as on 360 they can maximize and fine tune the engine for the specific, always 100% the same hardware.
PS3 last because apparently coding for it is awful due to the architexture.
They started sending out the next version (720, Xbox Next whatever) developer kits/console to major game devs months ago.
I bet Anet has one.
I'm an unapologetic PC gamer snob and I'm thrilled to amuse you, but this doesn't change the fact that GW2 plays more like an FPS than than standard tab-target based MMOs like WoW or SWTOR. For this reason, using a controller will be inferior to mouse and keyboard because speed and precision are going to be factors. In fact, WoW would be much better suited for controller because, despite the large number of possible skills available, 95% of the time, you're using the same half dozen -- if that. Tab-targeting takes care of the controller's need for auto-aim and movement locking while using skills keeps the complexity down.
As for the casualness of the game, I'll give you that -- right up to the point you start running repeatable mode dungeons. It's there that the difference between a one or two second reaction delay and a split second will start becoming noticeable. However, if the game mixes the platforms on the same servers, you'll be noticing that difference in PvP far more quickly -- like from your first encounter with someone using an effective control method. If you're given the choice and you still prefer a controller, I can only marvel at your capacity for taking punishment.
All this has nothing to do with how you map buttons on a controller, however. It's all about the speed and accuracy that a controller provides, which is, and always will be, inferior to a mouse and keyboard. The only time that rule can be broken is when the computer does the aiming for you and all you have to do is press a button to activate a skill. No matter what sleight-of-hand the console fans trot out, aiming with a controller is slower than with MKb. Full stop.
Suddenly, i just lost all interest in this game. Consoles... yikes, no thanks.
Really! If this game coming out on consoles which will not effect the PC version has made you lose interest, you could not of been that interested in the first place.
Really! If this game coming out on consoles which will not effect the PC version has made you lose interest, you could not of been that interested in the first place.
If a person feels so much hate towards a complete culture of gaming, it is likely that a such person is prone to become an inhabitant of the Fanboyism and Hater countries. If you are extreme in one aspect, it comes as no surprise that you are likely to be extreme in other ones as well. So perhaps it isn't so bad for the community as a whole if he lost all his interest?

This has been on the agenda since the start, about console port, If you have seen some of the very early news they have mentioned that console port was on their minds.
After that being said, if you guys didnt know, console players have different servers they will not be able to connect to PC player servers.
On the other note PS3 fully supports mouse and keybooard for a lot of games.
Just sayin.

The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true.

It's supposed to be launched sometime after the PC release. But seriously, what the heck?
I'm all for it if they don't pull another companies idea of a release date and pull it off the shelf a full two weeks before release to change then entire thing to a console game after they setup getting the game for free after paying a year on another title they own....I'm glad that Anet is focused on the PC version FIRST.

I really don't understand why others MMO company don't port to consoles too.
They really can maximise their profits.
All they need is to get a great ui console and pc programmer.
They can make extra few millions.
I should think the gamepad need to add on extra buttons to fully optimised.
Maybe another 4 buttons inbetween A - X - B - Y.
