No it is not THAT bad. It's worth trying. Might not be worth more than a month's sub though.

It's subjective. There are bad parts to it, imo.

    The bad:

    • The combat is wrapped around staring at cooldowns, which makes it a "play the UI" MMO. SWTOR makes WoW seem like it has action-combat.

    • There's a lot of needless travel time sinks via long distances between hubs with nothing to do in between and needless loadscreens that lead to needless zones to traverse to get to the next needless loadscreen (hanger decks and airlocks).

    • The only story variety is the on-rails class quests. Side quests are exactly the same for all classes.

    • Bioware claims that your dialogue decisions make a difference later in game, but they really don't - at all!

    • Boss fights are tank-and-spank. Really no phases or engaging game play for solo or group.

    • The Legacy system is DOA at ship-time.

    • Ship combat is VERY repetative and consists of only a half-dozen differing spacescapes. Think Star Fox, but more on rails.

    • Crafted items are actually worse than what you can buy on the auction house, making most of the crafting pointless.

    • Broad, stretched out zones with a lot of nothing-to-do for the explorer.

    • Dead worlds without ambient signs of life, other than the occasional space cow or panther.

    The good:

    • The class quest lines are interesting and do compel you to continue (if you can stand the combat system, which I eventually couldn't).

    • The voice acting in general is top notch.

    • Overall it is very well written.

    • Visually it's okay (subjective - some hate it, some love it. I'm meh).

    • Pretty good character tree development, though it's a direct lift from WoW circa 2007 in every sense except for names of talents.

    • The companion system is actually a fun element (imo).

    • Despite being on rails, space combat can be sort of fun initially (but quickly turns into a daily chore).

    • Not being a crafter, I liked the crafting system since my character could sponge the task off onto idle companions.

This is all just my opinion, so you mileage may vary. I got my jollies from the game for a little over a month, semi-casually. My highest leve character is a 46 Sith Sorcerer, with a half-dozen alts in their mid-20s. I wanted to get my Sorc to 50, but there's only so much uninspired tedium I can stand. I may come back after the holly grail patch that is 1.2, but that patch doesn't do anything for the outdated and uninspired combat system (whoever pushed/insisted this system should be in the game needs to be fired - watching cooldowns... really?), so we'll see.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

For me this game was more of disappointment than it was bad.

    Here's my take.

It's not phenomenal. but it's not a bad game either. A lot of people just had the bar set way too high. I mean, you're talking about multiplayer Star Wars and Bioware. It's a can't miss combination. Unfortuantely, it was off the mark a bit in a lot of areas. But judging by the content list of the upcoming 1.2 update, Bioware is hard at work on rectifying some of their mistakes. AFter playing for 2 months on a scale of 1-10, I'd probably give it about a 7.5

You also have to realize that a lot of the harsh critiques here are lagely from die-hard Guild Wars 2 fans. Although, I'm not really sure how you can be a diehard fan of something that's not even released but whatever, right? The point is there are a lot of people who gave the game a fair chance and didn't enjoy it. But there's also a lot of people who never gave the game a fair chance and God forbig... haven't actually played it and still bash it.

At the end of the day, it's not he best crafted MMO ever to come out. That honor still goes to WoW. Yeah, I said it. Sue me! *laughs* However, if you're looking for a decent game to play, you could do a lot worse than SWTOR.

  • hyllstarterhyllstarter Member UncommonPosts: 203

Just remember people who like something are busy playing it not on websites like this bashing it. The game isnt as polished as it could be. It is fun from lvl 1-50 but its true you can level to 50 without ever being in a group. But you can also do group content if you want. They are starting to hand out 7 day friend passes find a friend with one and give it a try.

I think i like Star Wars, but when i played TOR i started to hate Star Wars.

and im pretty sure theres more Star Wars fans in this planet than GW2 fans which is not even out yet.

If you're new to mmo's you'll probably not notice what's missing from other mmo's out there.

There is an upcoming patch in April that will add some of the missing features.

The levelling up is quite enjoyable if you can cope with all the travelling and loading screens.

If you enjoy PvP, you will likely be very disappointed once you reach level 50, which is easily achievable within a month.

Other than making alts, there is very little to do at end-game.

The game performs poorly on some hardware, even though it exceeds the minimum (or even maximum in some cases) requirements.

If you're looking for some long term commitment to a game, there might not be enough to do at this point, but you should get at least a months enjoyment out of it.

Its like - Is The Secret of Monkey Island a good game ?

     -yes.

    -with monthly fees ?

    no.

Honestly, I'd rather pay a monthly fee for The Secret of Monkey Island than 90% of the MMORPGs out right now.

As for SWTOR, it's good for a single run-through. If you pick a class you like (possibly meaning a storyline you like and voice acting you like on top of class mechanics you like), and avoid doing a lot of side quests, you'll have an OK time getting to 50.

If you do that in a month and then quit (which is quite easy even playing casually), you won't even have paid a sub.

    For a long-time relationship, I'd say no. :)

I'd honestly wait for the free trail or mid April to try the game out rather than risk disappointment and then post an I quit thread now because of things that might be in the game that you think where missing now ie UI customization and some other things. If you love story over gameplay I'm sure you'll like this game from level 1 to 50. That's if you don't mind ok gameplay. Then game is not terrible though like many make out to be. You must also take note that many reviews given early for MMOs tend to have strong love. Game informer actually waited a bit longer and gave a review of SWTOR and the reviewer ended up not liking it. Some reviewers actually claim that if they rated it now the scores would be lower. I'd say I've only seen few not many and it's mainly because of endgame, which is the same as many other MMOs. They got a few IMO innovations which is fully voiced to where you can interact with the cutscenes like mass effect or dragon age. They also are coming out with this legacy system that seems interesting. Combat is not very mobile it's like other tab targeting games which is not bad. Game is linear aside from searching for data tons. Leveling experience can be fun though it's engaging aside from gameplay but that's only my opinion. I'd recommend it to someone who is a star wars die hard and or someone who loves story over gameplay. Do not go off of trailers I suggest typing let's play SWTOR in YouTube search to find literal gameplay. Currently there are no high res textures, lfg, anti static creatures, UI customization, sitting, but that's just the bad. Gameplay isn't engaging like I've said but the story is. SWTOR has a lot of quantity but not high quality least from what I played and what many of my friends sum up their reasons for leaving. How ever the game has a lot of potential and can be great with a lot of work but it is very linear at the moment. I'd still give it a try regardless of what's being said by anyone even myself.

If you like Biowares other games you will like this game. It has a story to it which you cannot say about other mmo's. If you compare swtors combat  to other mmo's it is very good, you really feel part of the story due to immersiveness of the game. If you want to rush to end game than this is not for you, if you love the journey than this is for you-have fun.

PvP and crafting are just ok, they are not what swtor concentrates on.

This is really close to my impression. It's well articulated, for sure.

I'm currently in the second month of my timecard, but I don't know if I will play beyond that. I re-rolled on a populated server and that has made a big difference for me, but I only have a lvl  25 for my main now and a lot of alts in their 20s on the dead server.

I think the game will be fun for a month, so the box price will probably be worth it for you. And you will be able to form your own impressions of this game through direct experience. I'm glad I bought it and played it for that reason alone.

SWTOR isnt bad and at the very least is probably worth at least a play through. Class quests were a lot of fun but when I reached 50 the game was junk to me. I know this game isnt built on pvp but the way they implimented it was horrid. The open PvP in Illum was a joke, the WZ's were a joke and classifing this game as an MMO is a loose term at best.

With the implimentation of mail and Galactic trade on ships .... people will not even need to leave their own ship to do a damn thing. So the MMO feel really wasnt and wont be there. I didn't think this would be the gaem to do it, but I have seriously rethought giving any more WoW clones my money. yeah ...it's a WoW clone in space.  yes, I knew coming in they wouldnt do too much outside the box so they could make a lot of money but FFS, If I want to play Wow I would play WoW.

"I think it's better" is a lot different to "swtor IS better, get over it"

That's fine if you like it, that's your opinion its more valid for you than anyone else's,, I ignore anyone's opinion on here and go by what I like.

The way i see it, is when Bioware said this is gonna be KOTOR 3 thru 10, they were exactly right. They accomplished in making all those games under one hood, the point being they made a game, not a true MMOPRG. If you really like KOTOR  with a mutiplayer add on, then this game is for you. If you're looking for an actual MMOPRG, better times are to be had some where else.

No - it's not bad - it's going to have to get A LOT better before it can be upgraded to "bad".

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

Those 'good reviews' on all the big gaming sites is because EA is forking a LOT of cash to pay for advertising on those sites. For your own pocket book's sake, never trust gaming site reviews. Also the reviewers only tried the game out for a few days which is no time to generate an accurate review of a game this large.

Like many here said if you like Bioware games then you will like this one but it really is a single player game with a few multiplayer features. If your looking for a good MMO then save your cash for something else.

There is a 7 day referal trial avaliable now if you know someone that is playing to send you an invite but 7 days is just long enough to play through the good parts of the game. When you hit max level you also hit the minimum with gameplay. Everything is extremely repetive at max level and really before it aside from your characters personal story.

I enjoyed the game at first after about a month it just became bleh.  VOs are good and so are class quest lines, but the side quests are wash, rinse, and repeat.  I found the combat kinda boring honestly.  I would say try it for yourself and form your opinion as many people are enjoying it.

  • TorvanusTorvanus Member Posts: 17

In a nut shell the game is very good while you level up a character to level 50 once you finish that it is NOT worth $15 a month to play hutt ball and very meaningless dailies which are dull. It's funny because watching the feed of the Guild Summit Mr Ohlen mentioned how players are playing an average of 5 hours a day. I actually was probably in that category while leveling as the story really draws you in but once I reached level 50 the Cinderella story ended and so did my enjoyment of the game. Just like Obi wan once said ""I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."

Well, been playing about a month now, have a level 40 Republic Commando and have focused almost exclusively on the single player, story based content.

It's been pretty fun, standard theme park MMO faire (which isn't a bad thing), and I'd give the title a solid 7 right now.  (those game site reviews rate everything much too high IMO, in my world there has yet to be a 9.0 title yet, so 7 isn't a bad thing.

It's a decent game, just not a great game in terms of what I'm looking for, however people with other tastes might really love it.

It is not a "bad" game however, though that doesn't mean you might not end up disliking it for one reason or another depending on your individual taste.

It is a good game that is steadily improving. The downers for me are that I just don't see enough people to feel the massively part of mmorpg. And the red phase barriers are annoying.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

  • vellusvellus Member Posts: 30

The game was good, because it was new.  But after making one character, the second that is related starts in the same place and does not have all that much difference from the one you already did.  Then once you finish the starter planet, all 4 end up at the same place and then it is really repetitive.

It is good enough, I play it, but I do not have the urge to want to play it, I have gone to bed where other games have kept me up playing that extra hour, or two, or three, etc...

In my eyes it costs to much money for the single month it will entertain you. You are better of with sone other single player rpg, you will get more value
