I read the reviews on game review sites and they seem to give this game high ratings. But when I come here it's all doom and gloom. Should I even try this game or is it really that bad?
This site is full of people that only like games taht aren't out yet or games that were released 12 years ago.
The best I can tell you, if you have played and liked Bioware single player RPGs, and a multiplayer version of one of those sounds fun, you will probably like TOR. If you are expecting SWG2, you won't like it.
i second to that. monthly paid singleplayer game with very little interaction to fellow players if your fine with that and the subject is close to your heart go for it.
Personal preference, but the game is good (in fact very good) up until end game. Then it becomes a generic gear grinder in a Star Wars skin. Time will tell if it changes, which I hope it will do.
The issue is offset somewhat, if you enjoy the stories and want to experience the ones of the other classes and fraction.
The "bad" is just that SWTOR is very much in the same "mechanical" model of prior MMO's the earliest example of which would be EverQuest & the most successful being World of Warcraft, this similarity appears to be the biggest bone of contention for the commentators bashing the game, besides that SWTOR does not have "all" the features from that style of game which over some 13 years have been put in for those earlier titles, something BioWare are working on correcting. Also the game once you've reached 50 does have a lot of things to do, but each "endgame style" is a bit thin, if you like raiding there's a small number of raids, there's solo/group content in the form of Flashpoints & Dailies, but again only a few, & PvP is the same content you've already done before but with a bracket just for level 50's with new gear sets open to you & the open-world PvP of Ilum, though that is being taken back to the drawing board & will not be tangibly rewarding by way of items until that revamo has been completed at an undisclosed future date, though ranked warzones & ranked PvP gear is on it's way in April.
If you PvE only & do the class-quests It follows a "grind quests" design more than a "camp & grind on monster kills" so in that regard it follows WoW more than EQ.
If you PvP only you will be grinding warzones (instanced matches between players), or there is a "free for all" PvP area on Tatooine where pretty much anything goes.
There are "Flashpoints" instanced content for groups found at the Fleet which is a "social hub" for your faction "Heroic quests" for either 2 or 4 players out on the planets themselves & together they make up quite a good amount of group content & these do seem to be well-used at least on the well-populated server I'm on.
You can of course mix & match what you do, there's an "on-rails" space-shooter mini-game which is similar in mechanics to "Starfox" though it doesn't have easily identifiable "boss mobs" in it.
The crafting system is not as deeply involved as only a handful of games but does allow for you to "fire & forget" to a certain degree by setting up your spare (not currently being used in combat) companions, which at max level 50 will be 5 of the 6 you will have by then, to do crew skills while you are active doing other things.
The "good" is if you enjoy having a smooth levelling experience from level 1 to max then this game nails it pretty well, each of the 8 "base classes" 4 on each faction have their own "class story" comprised of quests that will serve as the spine the rest of the story hangs from & many side quests are interspersed with it, each planet has a background - overarching theme story that is explored as you go through the quests, also the companions that you earn along this class-story each have their own dialogues, some of which lead you into quests for them & this is part of the development of your ties to them as part of your team.
My overall opinion is the game is good quality, polished & engaging & provided you like the storytelling & the Star-Wars universe you will get a great deal of enjoyment from the game if you keep something of an open minded view & aren't a jaded veteran tired of the "same-old same-old" because this is that with a great big story system bolted on top, most of the detractors would put the "same-old" at 99% of the game, I'd put it as the story is 60% of the game. From 1-49 the story made levellng more fun & enjoyable for me than any other game, so much so that playing through on alts has not been anything like as boring a chore as any other game I've had alts in, and if you enjoy playing alts this game will have one of the most robust systems I've ever seen going in with 1.2 & onwards to support that kind of gameplay.
You've missed the Beta which was what the early adopters often choose to "try it out" but the 14-day friends-trial has started today, which will grant a current player three codes to invite friends in for a 14-day trial of the game, ask around & someone will probably be happy to help you out with one (I've handed mine out already to friends).
I read the reviews on game review sites and they seem to give this game high ratings. But when I come here it's all doom and gloom. Should I even try this game or is it really that bad?
No, it's not a "bad" game. The problem is asking the question here is pointless, there's more feces slinging here than there is at monkey world.
If splashing out £45 or $60 is a concern then don't bother.
Game would have been good as single-player + co-op game (without sub).
The game has a lot of multiplayer content, but for me it just doesnt feel worth the P2P fee, although at the moment, I dont think any games deserve it. They are all old and tired, and not pumping out content enough.
I miss the days where I played EQ2 and they pumped out new content every month, now they are doing it every 3 months (sometimes with no content at all).
The only one that seems to be earning the monthly fee at the moment is Rift, but that game is a bit rubbish in my opinion. Looking forward to the death of the P2P model really.
Yeah but New Content in older games was usually something very minimal that would not fly in current games. I think that all games now will suffer from crazy expectations. People will fight the satisfaction curve because there is perceived to be no limit on what can reasonably be provided in the game.
New Content must be >/= Shipping Content or ---> Unhappy
New Content must be released at ADHD speed or ---> Unhappy
New Content must compete with other MMOs + unreleased MMOs + sometimes even non MMO games (Skyrim, ME3, etc) + MMOs from days of yore or ---> Unhappy
Activities and grouping must be facilitated by the company not by players or --> Unhappy
I don't remember it being like this so much in my past experiences with MMOs.

Ie. it's good unless you have to justify the cash you spend in which case there are much better options.
We all have different taste and opinions, some may hate the game but that doesn't mean you wont like it. Some people may love it and you might end up hating it.
You never know, that's why you don't ever listen to others when it comes to games being good or bad.
I've had way too many games that i bought and ended up regretting that, even though the major people who have played the game loved it, i absolutely freaking hated it.
Look up information about the game including videos and if what you're reading/seeing is something you like, you should try it.

This is pretty much it.
If one likes bioware games and wants a more multi-player version then this game is very good. I realize some say it's "not an mmo" but I"ve done more grouping in SWToR than many other games I've played in the past. But your mileage may vary. The game has its issues such as the planets are more like quest hubs than places to "be" but it can be very fun.
Swtor is no where near the quality of biowares single player games.

Dragon Age 2 was also a Bioware single player RPG that's what you can expect from Bioware. Copy pasted areas and dialouges, overall feels and looks cheap but is sold way overpriced. So do the f**** you want they have got their reputation for no reason.
Because Dragon Age 2 is the only game they made right?
Personally I think its a great game, and has been the first MMO in a couple years to actually keep my attention longer then a few weeks. I have done more grouping in this so called "single player" mmo than I ever did in my years in WoW and the game lends itself far more to playing in a group than a lot of other games do.
Really only you can decide if you like it or not, buddy invites should be out now, I am sure you can find someone to send you a key so you can try it for a week before you buy.
And yet you played wow for years, i very much doubt you'll be doing the same with swtor.
why play swtor when you can just play mass effect 3? it doesn't have a monthly sub. It has multiplayer battlegrounds and it has a better story. The only thing swtor has going for it is star wars.
It's not really bad, but it sure is a bit confused about what it's trying to be. If you come looking for a great massively multiplayer experience, you will be saddened at the low populations, the missing community, the limited and poorly designed places to socialize (worst looking areas of the game and you are supposed to spend a lot of time there?), and the small incentive for grouping through most of the game.
If you come looking for a good game to solo in with a good story, you will find some things ( a few key points in some of the stories) to really love, stretched out by a lot of MMO kill quest grinding badly disguised by conversations with quest givers. They enticed me in the beginning with quests that felt meaningful, but it didn't last - with some exceptions here and there.
If you come with a friend or two to basically coop the whole thing you will probably have a pretty good time.
Oh and if you come for pvp, er, don't :P Yuck.
The game is still being worked on though, and I think it definitely has some possibility to improve. It was rushed to market, the game design is a bit flawed (it's not JUST that it's a clone of the current standard mmo model), but there are enough good things about it I can't outright call it bad.
First of all never trust this site on what games u shoudl play. Its all doom and gloom for every game out there except gw 2.
So really if u let this community pick your games for u , u will never be playign any mmo's , most of the peole here arent.
they are to busy whining that the game is uo or everquest to actually play any of the games on the market today
some of which are alot of fun , tor to me is a blast. But thats my opinion. Try it for yourself and see. if u dont like it u are out what it costs u to buy any game ud buy. 60 dollars as u can cancel before u have to sub as u get 30 days free with the game
Please when it comes to games u have to try them yourselves and not listen to anyone on here even me.
I personally enjoyed the first two months of gameplay at a recreational pace, playing through the storyline quests, some PVP, and some of the space missions. I just broke level 30 and am still having fun when I have the time to play.
If you are looking for a storyline-driven MMORPG, where you can do 90% of the content solo or enjoy grouping with other people, then SWTOR might be for you. You do have to keep in mind that some systems are still in their early stages of being expanded to what many people consider it "should" have been for release (UI, crafting, guild management, PVP rewards).
A decent number of people on mmorpg.com will give you the usual doom and gloom (if not flat out venemous) responses, but I personally don't mind endorsing the game. Like most things in the world, if you accept it for what it is and focus on the positive points, it can be a lot of fun. If you intend to churn through the game at a breakneck pace and are looking for a robust and well-defined end-game, SWTOR is likely not for you.
