Though I've got to hand it to them, it's brilliant marketing at least.

This post is gold right here.

    Nah.  Maybe pyrite.

There are 48 servers and the estimated number of people who prepurchased is somewhere around 200,000 so far, based on some guesswork.  That's over 4000 per server already.  4000 per untested, un-optimized server.  And EU isn't sold out yet.  Plus there's the press coming and the 10,000+ actual beta testers already in the game.  Sounds plausible to limit the number of additional testers with that in mind.

Although it is also some brilliant marketing.  I can't remember ever hearing about a game company *refusing* sales, for whatever the reason.  You have to admit, the trend has been to push the stuff out the door and damn the consequences.  It shows a lot of confidence to hold back sales.  They *know* people will be back for it later.

Darkfall did this as well, and people were here complaining then as well.

I have a newb question..  If I purchase GW2 at gamestop, will I be able to participate in the beta event this weekend?? Or is that reserved only for the digital purchase which is sold out atm?

    thank you

So geniuses, if they are limiting supply due to not enough capacity

    A) What kind of fail company doesnt have enough capacity for the first public outing of their game

    B) How comes if I goto amazon, play, gamestop, etc I can still buy a copy and get into beta, If there isnt enough capacity how comes these people can still get in?

This is marketing BS pure and simple

The kind of company that sells WAY more copies than expected.

They give out a limited number of beta keys to retailers and their planned number for the GuildWars 2 website ran out before most other retailers. On their website, they even direct you to other places you can purchase the digital version of the game and still get in BETA.

This is marketing BS pure and simple

    No.

    No.

So, actually its not sold out at all. You can still buy the digital version from other retailers, and you can stil buy the boxed version from other retailers.

The game is not sold out. One shop (ArenaNet) is sold out.

    Marketing Hype.

Is it so hard to understand that they just did what they said they would do???

They said that betas would have a limit and that limit would increase from beta to beta.

So if they reached the limit to the 1st beta they dont sell more. Simple as that, it was announced for weeks.

So what the hell are you talking about when you say its a bad company because of that? its just normal..

    So many nonsence post ffs.

I dont understand why or how some are so affraid of GW2 be a sucess, that makes them spend all day at GW2 forum to say nonsences.

So genius, if it was market pure and simple why you can still buy at EU? Only US servers reached max capacity as it was told.

So in your opinion they should prohibit all companys that still have it for sale? lol...

Must give +10 to Anet for thinking about the current players playing the beta.

I mean they could have sold for an gigantic  amount of extra cash, but refused to do so.

Dunno how much people pre purchased GW2, but this is just fantastic news :)

Now lets see some numbers ^^ !!!!

But IIRC they also set a record in the number of canceled pre-orders revealing a big weakspot in their business model that GW2 isn't even threatened by.  ...add to that TOR's "fuzzy math" on copies sold versus actual subscriptions and you've got a game with greatly a future Sales potential that is already steeply dropping off VS. GW2's staying strong for years to come if word of mouth carries it.   (TOR's word of mouth is:  WoW in space... which isn't helping it).

Alos: StarWars was going to sell a ton either way based solely on franchise Loyalty.

Guildwars is too much of a dark horse for that dynamic so that's another reason they don't compare well.

The ability some of you have for necroing is one for the record books.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I don't see how this increases demand.

I mean if someone really wants to play there's copies out there.   I was getting some groceries at Walmart and they had a big GW2 display that still had copies.

Heh just noticed this is a necro
