For those saying ANET is in the wrong or that it’s too harsh why don’t we compare the ANET policy to say the Blizz policy when it comes to this type of thing. In Diablo 3 there are players who have been reported for scamming and exploiting countless times by other players and NOTHING is ever done about it. There are threads on the official blizz forums regarding known cheaters/scammers and literally nothing is done about it by the blizz staff. As a player this is very demoralizing. If you’re one of the opportunist you probably don’t even understand where the honest players are coming from. Some of us want to be able to play the game the way it’s intended to be played and not have to worry about other players gaming the system and completely destroying the economy, community, etc.
This type of policy sends the message that just because there was a programming error doesn’t mean it’s ok to exploit it. I don’t know of any better way to police a community than to put the message out that there will be harsh consequences when you intentionally exploit the game. No longer is it ok to just google for exploits and cheats and jump in with the rest of the opportunist.
All of you saying ANET messed up or defending the exploiters seriously do you think they have time to come up with a complex rollback and tracking system to figure out who’s a repeat offender and who deserves a second chance? That’s exactly why nothing gets done in any other games because there is no time for this sort of thing. I completely agree with the ANET policy as a player who has no desire whatsoever to cheat in video games it’s refreshing to see a company have a zero tolerance policy towards it.
This may be the first game I’ve ever played that took an adversarial stance against the type of players I wish couldn’t be in my gaming community to begin with. From the stupid names, filthy trash talk in chat, to the cheating and exploiters. Awesome

I think it's the right thing to do. The game isn't even a week into launch yet. They way they go about it is interesting. Rather than just rolling the servers back, they are making the exploiters remove all of their gains from the exploit themselves. Sort of an "if you want your account, then you better prove it" method.

It really is awesome how they are doing it. It's like these kids are getting their first lesson in honesty ever. The act of them having to reverse what they have done themselves will have a much stronger mental impact than someone else doing it for them.
Also I'm ok with the reversal as long as going forward ANET has zero tolerance. The word should be out now. No more excuses.
"If a function in a game is "broken" due to an oversight by coders and/or game developers, and the flaw is "exercised" by some portion of the player base, it is the developers' responsibility to fix said flaw so the exploitation ceases."
Gamers traditionally call this "constructive use of game mechanics", skewed or otherwise. Is it "grey area" of morality? Of course it is but...
The developers have now effectively STOLEN $60 from thousands of people (real money, not roll-back game money) when the mistake was theirs.
It doesn't matter how you shape it. This game company are now not only incompetant, but also theives. I'm so glad, so glad, I didn't buy this retail. ANet just really pissed off thousands of opportunists with half a brain. Very bad things will come of this.
Wow, just wow... That's about the most brain dead thing I've ever read! So, if you steal from a shop, because the security camera is broken, you are free to leave with the stolen goods without any interference from the shopowner? Bullocks..
To use your own phrase.. It doesn't matter how you shape it, a crime is a crime no matter the circumstances. There is no such thing as "constructive use of game mechanics". There is a report button so you can inform the developers that issues remain within the game. If you expect a game to be flawless at launch you are seriously deluding yourself and the real culprits are those who effectively unbalanced the gameplay to such an extent that other players might be affected negatively..
Idk, taking advantage of a cheap price OFFERED BY Anet on gear does not seem like a bannable offense to me. Rollback/take the gear and send these people a message saying Woops... cause it seems like thier mistake not the individuals who bought something for cheap.

Spot on there!!
No. They knew it was wrong and suffered the consequences. What is interesting here are the different morals being exhibited here.
I approve of the perma bans. I'm tired of exploiters getting a slap on the wrist, I'm looking at you SWTOR. People who are defending the cheaters are either a cheater themselves or have a personal vendetta against GW2.
It's very easy to talk when you aren't affected, isn't it?.
This is what happned to me, despite arena net or any or you can argue:
I reached level 40, so I went to the norn city to see if I could buy a weapon with karma. So I checked the vendor and I realized my karma wasn't enought. So, just for curiosity, I checked the rank 2 vendor seeing the weapons were low price...
I was a bit surprised, I didn't know of such a bug and beside I suspected it to be one, I buyed the weapons related to my profession (mesmer). Before you blame me, think if you would have done the same or not...
5 mins later the server restarted, so I rechecked the vendor to confirm if it were a bug or not. As you can guess, it confirmed me it was a bug, so I wrote an email, explaining my situation in spanish. A few hours later, I was playing and got d/c with a message saying that my account have been suspended for 71 hours.
I am still waiting for an answer of my email, and before you say that I should have contacted the english support, I'll say that I buyed the game here, at Spain, and it's translated to Spanish, and I play with Spanish people on an Spanish server, so they should provide me with Spanish support...
Excuse me if my english isn't very good, but I just saw the post and had to tell my case.
Right now the game is full of bugs (auction house broken, mazz broken, guild system broken, events broken, lag everywhere....). If the game, by any of thouse bugs, give you a weapon it shouldn't and you take it without knowing it's a bug, you should be banned? Think it, because it could happen to you.
But now I think they have made me a favor, because this way I'll do other things the weekend, instead of suffering lag, disconnections in the middle of a boss, or other bizarre things. I hope that everything is fixed for when I come back (but I seriously doubt it will be done in 3 days....).

I did personaly bough the weapons ( 1of each) and i'm not banned

I'm glad you got a temp ban, be thankful it's not permanent. Exploiters are always the ones who cry the loudest when they get banned, and most fo the time they lie about what they got banned for. I'm 100% sure you got banned for something you did intentionally, but you don't want to admit it to yourself or on a message board.

Wait, so now the game in general is just bad? Despite you being level 40 already?
As someone who has been playing online rpgs since MUDs in the mid/late 90s and has never once been warned/banned/asked to stop doing something by admin/rolled back etc...I know it's completely possible to just play the way you're supposed to.
Another great decision done to avoid this game, despite the massive hype. What a company does when it has its own problems? Bans its customers, rather than fix its issues. There are ways and means you can properly fix an exploit without anyone being harmed cuz of it, like doing a rollback to those accounts or removing the profits earned.
On top of that permaban without prior violations on your account remainds me of the old SOE days with SWG Pre-CU. But we all know how that ended, and they begged getting as many subs back in the game with the collapse after NGE.
Disagree.. It makes no difference if it's a game exploit or a real life exploit.. People MUST learn there are consequences for one's actions.. Our local grocery store found a glitch that some employees found and exploited it for personal gain.. ALL those epxloyees were FIRED immediately.. Are you suggesting they only "pay back" what they took? Where is the punishment in that?
I aint a cheater, but then again i rarely see exploits, and all you screeching permabans on first offense are crazy. These are videogames and there will always be cheaters, but thats just it, THIS IS A VIDEOGAME....not boot camp. If there was an exploit and thousands of people were banned the fault lies not with the masses but with the company for not taking care of their game, lol kinda glad i havent bought GW2 yet cause i admit i might have been tempted just a little. but wow...already theyre failing at maintaining their game, Good job anet!
Edit: This thread is nothing more than a fools witch hunt, just pages of stuff like "Good Riddance" when the game lost 3000 subs already and its just begun...killing your own game.

Yes, good job Anet!! As you can see from the posts on this thread, most players are happy with the bans. Since you don't plan on playing anyways, I'm sure GW2 will survive without you.
What is truly funny is that I never even got a temp ban for doing the same thing. I was a large scale user of this tactic, as my whole guild was, and nothing has happened to any of us.
So would I get banned from Target if they had, say iPods priced at $1, and I bought a crapload of them? It is in a store marked at a price, and all I did was buy the item? I do not see fault with the customer.
Idk, taking advantage of a cheap price OFFERED BY Anet on gear does not seem like a bannable offense to me. Rollback/take the gear and send these people a message saying Woops... cause it seems like thier mistake not the individuals who bought something for cheap.
The real statement should look like this.
Should I be banned from Target if I saw a price gun sitting on the counter and decided to mark the iPods down to 1.00 then proceeded to buy 1000 of them. The Gear was that low due to an exploit it was not marked down that low by Anet.

That's bull.
As a normal playing customer, I want Anet to do something about the tools that exploit the game. That includes both fixing the actual exploit AND punishing the people abusing the exploit. You'd rather let those people get away with it? Bull.
Greed is the main factor why companies using subscriptions don't prosecute such behaviour properly like Anet can afford now when they have no subs. I mean when some chief with $$ in his eyes listens to his employee who gives an idea to perma ban 3000 people they do the math: 3000 people x 12€ subs = 36.000,00 EUR lost OMG and go "U MAD" and order 3 day bans.
The exploiter however goes:
1. Exploit exploit exploit omnomonom
2. gets banned for 3 days LOL WHATEVER
3. earn thousands of preeeciousssss goooooold omonomonom
4. repeat and PROFIT?!?!? Hell yeah!
Well done ANet, and please keep it up!!
Don't get all flimsy. This is the only way to make your game better.
Some or many of the banned players wont buy it again which means no gems or expansions bought.
If you let people get away with anything you get a bad reputation, as Lineage 2 have for botters and exploiters. That can cost you a lot more than a few banned players.
While I agree to some extent.. you have to think that there are players who WILL buy the game again, and thats another sale that you didn't have before...
And therein lies the problem for me. Is a permaban really worth it? Couldn't they ban players for a month? Remove all the items or gold they made? Is it necessary for a permaban? I don't think so -- in a game with no subscription.. they could throw a long term ban without making it permanent instead of forcing players to pay for the game again -- which would put them back in the game sooner anyways.
I always hated exploits like these.... while, sure, some players went way too far buying thousands of items... it was a fault of ArenaNet. Not at the amount of the exploit.. but if there wasn't one, nobody would have been banned... right?

Hm. I look at it really simple:
If you do not exploit, you are safe. If you DO exploit, you might get banned. Look, it's not like the permabans are handed out to people accidentally doing it once or twice. We're talking about dozens upon dozens of times.
Im surprised though. After all these MMOs where exploiters and botters were pretty much ignored, someone finally steps up and kicks ass, yet people STILL complain?
It's very easy to talk when you aren't affected, isn't it?.

That reddit-thread is an amazing read really..!
Someone really thought that he was banned for naming his character "lol," so he confronted Arenanet with it, knowing they would post the reason for his ban (that was stated as the reason for the tread).
The reason he was banned was apparantly that he got reported for saying: "This isnt Africa, you dont adopt black kids."
Another dude named "FoulMouthedFrog" was banned for saying: "GET THE FUCKING CAVERN SCUTTER ENERGIES YOU FUCKASSES!" which is freaking hilarious!

(mod edit)
Good day to you too. Hopefully you can take your own advice when/if you buy GW2 and learn from the mistakes from others.
Long thread. Not sure if this has been covered but:
Definition:
Exploit. Mostly used about multi-player games, an exploit can be defined as a case where a player knowingly uses a flaw in a game to gain an unfair advantage.
From Guild Wars 2 Rules of Conduct ( www.guildwars2.com/en/legal/guild-wars-2-rules-of-conduct/ )
17. You will not exploit any bug in Guild Wars 2 and you will not communicate the existence of any such exploitable bug (bugs that grant the user unnatural or unintended benefits) either directly or through public posting, to any other user of Guild Wars 2.
Not sure why this thread is so long.
Tabletop RPG gaming since Chainmail and D&D was a blue book with some cheap plastic dice and a crayon. MMORPGing since MOOS/MUDS, when forums were just bulletin boards and players actually roleplayed their characters.

I'm 100% sure you got banned for something you did intentionally, but you don't want to admit it to yourself or on a message board.
Wait, so now the game in general is just bad? Despite you being level 40 already?
I think you're lying.
As someone who has been playing online rpgs since MUDs in the mid/late 90s and has never once been warned/banned/asked to stop doing something by admin/rolled back etc...I know it's completely possible to just play the way you're supposed to.
As such I approve one strike and you're out.
Bull.
That said, what subs? Sigh.
Kripparian had his account per banned, he first found out about it on reddit. lol.
Your account info is safe with us! But we reserve the right to post its status on an info site!
That reddit-thread is an amazing read really..!
Someone really thought that he was banned for naming his character "lol," so he confronted Arenanet with it, knowing they would post the reason for his ban (that was stated as the reason for the tread).
The reason he was banned was apparantly that he got reported for saying: "This isnt Africa, you dont adopt black kids."
Another dude named "FoulMouthedFrog" was banned for saying: "GET THE FUCKING CAVERN SCUTTER ENERGIES YOU FUCKASSES!" which is freaking hilarious!
