[Column] Elder Scrolls Online: Why Would a Non-Elder Scrolls Fan Play ESO?

I can't say its bad game. To be honest, I am not sure how big success it will be or not, but I can't say I don't like the game now. I will buy it and try it for longer time.

There are two things I feel more then others:

1, Because of all the players around, you can't actually have same experience like in for example Morrowind or Skyrim.

There is still running someone around :)

2, Personally I think, that the flora, the environment of the world should be more detailed. I have feeling like its too empty. And I think, that the beautiful vistas are one of the major things people like on Elders scrolls games. Sure, not the most important, but still very important.

BTW, I don't understand why someone is whining about NDA, when there are maybe hundreds of gameplay videos on the youtube, even from closed beta.

i'm one of those older TES series fan

i've played Morrowid, Oblivion, and lastly Skyrim

however, i'm not going to jump in on the first day, i'll check the reviews first instead

my reason is simple, it's not Bethesda, and it's online

I am having problems getting past the graphics and I rushed beta to get as much in as quick as I could so I did not give the game a real chance. I will play open beta slowly and see if i like the game but i doubt i would subscribe since I am already in another p2p game atm

If they fix those horrid char. animations and laughable combat by launch then maybe i'll consider it. doubt it though.

I played Oblivion through several times.  But haven't purchased subsequent games because I prefer a multiplayer experience.  Still  I like the Elder Scrolls Lore.  And it seems the game mechanics will be a welcome change as well.  At the same time I'm certain many die hard fans of games like Skyrim won't be interested.  Even as many of us who are fans of MMORPGs will eschew TESO.  That's just the way life goes and I hope ZOS has realistic expectations for the level of success this game will have.

I just know that I've decided to give it a try.  And I'm open minded enough that I will most likely enjoy myself tremendously.  "We'll see" is the most constructive thing I can say at this time.

Not as bad as I was expecting. Still has a non ESO feel being locked into classes. Still can't explore the whole world on 1 character. Didn't see anything to really excite me though. Felt very generic and...meh!

might cover a months worth of boredom but long term...not sure the appeal. Just too dumbed down and on rails and not open enoughfor my liking

I honestly think the only people who end up playing are DAoC fans, what few remain, and megalithic fan boys with an agenda.

Funny, I think ESO fans and non ESO fans will play it. In fact I think many like you who claim to hate it will too. What insulting baiting title similar to megalithic fan boy should we call that?

I plan on playing but I have no allusion as to the many issues I see with the title.  Something that astounds me that Fan Boys don't see.  But back to my post, one simple look into any sub forum (non ESO related) or the many negative or postitive previews/articles of the game.  Such as the ones on Forbes, Reddit, Massively and Kokotai and you'll see many many many fans of the single player experience saying the same thing.  Hell many of the posts on this very sub forum is negative toward the game.  Yet you think all is gravy.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

It is easy to get a feeling of the game from already published videos on youtube.

The character customization is  elaborate, it is a good thing but I never felt it to be all that important. The power customization seems a little limited however. I like it when I actually have to think about how I want my character to work. Its good that the game is using the mouse for directions hough, tired of the querky moves from older games.

I think its worth the purchase, however I dont think it is a game that for most players will last more than a few months.

That's because it is "just another Themepark with little innovation". With horrible animations and clunky combat to boot.

Many believe a sandbox is a game that allows freedom to do what you want (no rails).  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandbox_Game There are many versions of a sandbox and there is no need to act like Professor Know it all picking the thread and people apart.

If by "my version" you mean a version that is actually consistent with the word being used, sure.  It's not my fault if other people use words in ways inconsistent with their meaning.  And that link doesn't even go to a page about sandboxes, it redirects to a page about open world games, which is not the same thing.

Also, even if we use your no rails definition, that still isn't Skyrim.  Companions quest line?  On rails.  Main questline?  On rails.  Thieves' Guild?  Rails.  You get the idea.  There being a bunch of different sets of rails is not the same thing as there not being rails.

Or how Oblivion and Skyrim are listed in the top 5 sandbox games here.

Looks like there are more confused people writing for those sites. ;)

It's only a sandbox element (in whatever percentage) if it's in the game.  All the creation tools available for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim exist solely outside the game.  If you only play the experience as it comes on the disk/in the original download, you are playing Bethesda's themepark game.  To be fair, their games are really sets of separate themeparks, all dropped into an open world with some random monsters wandering between parks, but there is still no sandbox inside that open world.

What modders have done outclasses what any developer can do?  Do you also read fan fiction instead of novels, and watch youtube videos instead of movies in the theater?

It is not an inferior product.  It is not a superior product.  It is simply a different product, and depending on what it was a given player liked about Skyrim, it is possible to either love or hate TESO on that basis.

I believe you are confusing the term just as much as the person you're quoting here.  Sandbox has never, will never and does not equal creation/crafting.  Just because you don't like it doesn't make it true.  Open World, non linear gameplay has always been associated with sandbox but it is you who see no creation or crafting.  Many sandbox games have no crafting centric game play.  But most do include it because it is another bullet point in the games systems list.

Agree. Why would someone that has total unrestricted  freedom in a sandbox want to?

Skyrim isn't a sandbox.  If you use a bunch of mods, you aren't playing Skyrim anymore you are just playing mods that use the Skyrim engine.

Except that Bethesda made the game to be modded and thus it MAKES it a sandbox because that is one of the things a sandbox is. A game that provides the tools players need to shape the game in a way they want. Funny how that little part of the game keeps being left out by those calling TES a themepark.

I seem to remember that MMORPG caught a slip up a couple months ago where one of the ESO guys said that there would be some sort of instanced modding almost neverwinter style but i might be thinking about one of the other blockbuster games coming out, which by your definitions would make it a sandbox, You act as if the only reason people played skyrim was mods and sandbox features, what about all those people who love the story and world and the combat, those people might be satisfied in ESO.

Because they butchered the lore and only a non Elder Scrolls fan wouldn't care?
  • r3dl4ncer3dl4nce Member UncommonPosts: 114

    Reasons to play TESO:

    - quest system based on exploration, puzzles, place to discover, treasure maps and not the boring "fedex" quests

    - you can grow you character as you like, hybrid mix can be done, just use the weapons, armors, guild skill that you like and grow them by using them. Your character, just as you want him!

    - action combat system

    - third person view just like a TPS (shoulder cam like on the last Tomb Raider)

i like the artstyle and the world and character models but the things i that i didnt like and the ones that need fixing are big enough for me not to pay a subscription in any game. After the game launches and they offer a free trial (or a free weekend) then ill see if they fixed the flaws and its worth a sub. Right not its not.

Not giving details because of NDA

Before the release, there should be an open beta with the game as it's release state, you should try it during that

Don't get me wrong, it looks beautiful and has great sound, but as an MMO I predict a failure on par with SW:TOR.

Most companies would kill for a "failure" that becomes the second most successful MMO with a subscription option.  Nice to know you think ESO is going to be highly successful.

It is possible to use terms incorrectly.  Open world and sandbox are two different things.  If they weren't, there wouldn't be two terms.  Do sandbox games tend to be open world?  Yes, but that doesn't make any open world game a sandbox.  The only thing that made SWG even arguably a sandbox was the inclusion of player buildings/cities.  Without those, it would just have been a themepark that forgot to build any rides.  Minecraft is a sandbox.  Landmark will be a sandbox.    You seem to be saying that something is still a sandbox even if it only gives you the box and the sand, and leaves out the tools.  That isn't a sandbox.  It's just kitty litter.

The defining element of a themepark is that it is about playing through professionally developed static content.  That is exactly what you do in an unmodded Elder Scrolls game, and if you are playing mods, you are no longer playing the Elder Scrolls product created by the developers, you are just playing amateur products created to be experienced in the same engine.

I would much rather be talking about ESO specifically, but well, NDA.  So instead I'll just focus on knocking down nonsensical arguments that try to frame other Elder Scrolls games as something other than what they are in an attempt to convince people they won't like ESO.

There are several references to the $200M or $250M cost of the game.... This has not been confirmed by ZeniMax and is probably a myth (started by Paul Tassi @ Forbes).  It should be noted that Skyrim did cost over $200M and was profitable without a subscription fee.

    Things I do know:

    1. There will be a retain price for the Boxed Game / Digital Download (price TBC)
    2. There will be a monthly cost (£8.99 in the UK) discounted for multiple months
    3. The characters appearance and abilities are very configurable
    4. There is a lot of crafting to do (if you want)
    5. There is a lot of exploring / Chests to pick / resource gathering / fishing to do (if you want)
    6. ZeniMax have said they intend to update the game every 4-6 weeks
Personally I am really looking forward to the release date and it might just coincide with some time I have booked off work (if it releases on time).

In one of the battle grounds, it's a capture point style battle ground, and you have to "capture an Elder Scroll by reading it". I think that speaks for itself.

    http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Elder_Scroll_(Lore)

"Any person gifted with prescient powers is able to interpret the contents of the Elder Scrolls with practice. It is said that those with no ability see only unknown etchings and runes, often claiming to recognize constellations and birth signs. True insight into the divine contents comes at a price as each new foretelling and interpretation strikes the reader with blindness that gradually increases with each reading, while simultaneously granting them a broader view of the scroll's contents. Ultimately, the reader, having engaged in frequent acts of prophecy, is left bereft of their vision, forever after removed of their right to read the scrolls. By time-honored tradition only those of The Cult of the Ancestor Moth may read from the scrolls, the younger members caring for the elder as they gradually lose their sight for eternity. The loss of sight for the reading of an Elder Scroll is described as "a price," probably for the learning of what the Elder Scroll chooses to reveal to the reader. Some go insane from reading an Elder Scroll because, as the game describes, it is too much knowledge for some to handle."

There's a lot of other stuff as well. It's not a game for fans of the Elder Scrolls IMO, especially the older games.

     This after the fix.

The word "Non-" should be removed from the title because that is one of the biggest questions being asked on every TES related site. [mod edit]

No amount of articles pushing the game is going to change that and doing it on this site that is swarming with former DaoC fans is just preaching to the choir.

Took the words right out of my mouth

The vast majority of MMO reviews aren't very useful, and there isn't any way to distinguish the specs of gold from the mounds of detritus presented as "helpful advice".  In general, if a game sounds interesting, just sign up for Beta and play pre-release. Per the chan aphorism, if you want to know the flavor of a biscuit, eat the biscuit, not a painting of it.  And with modern betas, you can generally do that at no added cost.

I am largely one of these people.

I bought Oblivion in August 2012, and got into reading alot and playing around alot with the mods. I had only been playing 6 months, asking lots of questions on the forums when:

I received a bad taste in my mouth when a Bethesda forum mod stuck their .... in my mouth and insta banned me for an innocent reply to someone in a thread. I made a simple reply to someone in a Bethesda forum thread when they were talking about TV, when I simply said I can't afford a tv so I watch tv shows from xxxx.xx, gave me an insta ban from the forums. They called it against the the forum rules (which is a no tolerance policy) for hacking/warez/...etc sites which it was not (just because it is torrents doesn't mean it is that. TV shows aired over the airwaves are free to people with "rabbit ears"...and no it was not that "buccanner" site; this place only has tv shows).

    I stopped playing after that.

Well, i did not finish Skyrim, because i got bored half way, it was realy no fun to play when everything that was interesting about Skyrim was shown to you in first couple of hours of the game.

Also Skyrim realy disappointed me with those bad model textures and lot of other low quality places.

Now compared to ESO, it kind of feels like ESO was made on same engine in same world but by different people. In ESO quests are mostly not boring and fun to play, so from technical, story and from any other perspective, ESO is way better then Skyrim.
