You guys can try and defend the puny 23k players online on "one world" but the fact remains it's a minority of the mmo players. Once you realize that you can stop trying to make everyone else think it's as big as WoW or even EQ2.
Quit being dense. There is no other game- not one! Where all the players are in the SAME UNIVERSE. Sure, several million people play WoW. But not in the same game world- they're all on separate servers! In eve, you can meet everyone. Makes for a bigger online community.
As for puny- as has already been mentioned, eve is close to entering the top 500 supercomputers list. Where's wow? Not even close. No supercomputers there. Puny.
I've played wow a bit- it was more fun at the start, but just got boring. I'm still playing eve after 6 months. They both have their good and bad points, but eve is better.
(And I think we've found at least one of the WoW fanbois )
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in the last 14 pages, but on the Eve Online website they specifically told their players about these awards and asked them to vote.
That would be the most obvious reason why Eve Online claimed the awards. If WoW, EQ2 or L2 officially told their players about the awards and asked them to vote, they probably would have won too. They probably just didn't care as much.
Not to take anything away from Eve, but it has quite the small subscription base compared to other mmorpgs for the simple reason most don't care to play it. Why? Because most don't think its a game worth buying. Thats not stab at Eve, just a point of fact.
Oh well, the awards probably meant he most to Eve Online so props to them.
Flush these results down the crapper...total garbage and rigged!
Plus...weren't the "awards" supposed to be for THIS YEAR!!!
EVE DOESN'T EVEN QUALIFY! But then neither does WoW, EQ2 or nearly anything in the nominations for that matter...as 2005 SUCKED for MMOs, except for GW...which was excellent, but noone thinks that's a MMORPG.
And as for EVE's graphics...hahahahaha...I could put a solar system poster on my wall track a model spaceship in front of it and take a video, and that'd equal the technical standard of EVE's graphics. Let's see something with ACTUAL polygons and textures win graphics...but NAAH! OMG, and Ryzom for STORY??? what the...?? Ryzom is one of the BIGGEST grind-festing non-story MMOs out there...
(Just my opinion...no flames required...congrats to EVE and CCP on the "wins")

There is the techincal possibilities and then there is what you do with them. There is so much more to graphics than polygon count. I have not played EQ2 so I can not comment on it directly, the screenshots look ok but to me it feels like it's missing the most important aspect to graphics "feeling".
Feeling of imersing you in the world. Eve got that feeling.

very amusing... it's the same old story over and over again... it's the oldest quarrel ever known....

so there was a vote... whats the problem with that? nobody's got to believe in the outcome, nobody's got to change his game because of the outcome, noone is forced to do anything, nothing changes... and still some people behave like some world is coming to an end...
do you all believe that there is some sort of "higher truth" about which is the "very best game" out there, and that this truth is some sort of "absolute objective, unchangable fact" ??
has it ever occured to even a single one of you, that there is no "best" game in spe, like there's also no "best" class, no "best" ship, no "best" way to skill and no "best" whatever... it is a MATTER OF TASTE... and different people got different tastes... different people like different games... thats GOOD! where would we end up, if everyone around the whole world would just play one and the same game like everyone else?

why is it so F*****IN important, that the one game YOU like, is the BEST game? (not to mention that there's no sort of "higher truth best stuff thingy whatsoever") how comes it that everybody feels personally insultet, if someone else does not like the game she/he likes quite a lot? do you really need ALL other people in the world to tell you that you are right, in order that you are able to believe it yourself? or what is all that fuss about?
why does everybody feel the unstoppable urge to prove that his choice of game is the only good one?
there are different tastes, there are different people, there are different games and there are different choices. this doesn't make one taste or one choice better than any other... especially the fact that many, many other people are of the same opinion doesn't prove anything... because something is MAINSTREAM it doesn't neccessarily need to be good...
there is no "absolutely" best game for everyone. depending on play-style, personal preferences, personality traits, experience in gaming and many many other things, theres ONE perfect game for every single one of all of you. there will NEVER EVER be ONE game, that's perfect for EVERYBODY. NEVER, NEVER, EVER...
so what the hell are all of you arguing about?
do you really thing there's one single person reading this thread, who will change his presumptions because of your whine or flame?
all of that does lead to absolutely nothing...
it's just the same old story... it's nothing more than a new variation on "my c0ck is bigger than yours"
or is there anything else you desperately need to prove here?
i myself played wow for nearly a year now. got one lvl 60 char, one around lvl 40 somewhere, and one lvl 30, and several others below 20. i played it enough to know, this game doesn't really fit me. i spent a lot of time and money, and i sure got my fun in exchange. but i found out about more and more things i did not like. instances for instance. i don't like em. it's just my very personal opinion. noone needs to share it. and even if i was the only one on the whole world who didn't like em... i wouldn't feel the need to prove everybody else wrong... i don't know what other people like, and i don't mind. if you like instances, if you love WoW, thats good for you! no jealousy, no hatred, no need to quarrel. or maybe a bit of jealousy... you've found your game. i still have to search on! i know what i like, and it's not instances. and it's only my very personal and very subjective opinion. no need everyone gets upset about it. im going to try out EVE now. not because of the vote results. and surely not because of anything anyone ever postet in this thread... i can't tell you if EVE is "better" than WoW... ask me again one year from now. then i will be able to tell you which one is better IN MY OPINION. i don't own any sort of higher truth, so no matter to whatever conclusion i will come... this conclusion is only for me alone, and i don't think that the game that's best for me, HAS to be best for someone else too... and if some tells me, that other game is best for him, why should i try to prove him wrong? who am i to know better what HE likes best, than he does himself?

First of all it was not a employee of CCP who posted the link but a player who cares. Then it got stickied on the the forums by a moderator who is a volunteer (not a GM) who also care. Only after the voting was over did Oveur, the senior producer of EVE, post a gratitude post because he both cares about the result and that it's found on this site.
Now what does that indicate of other MMORPG's player bases and designers? They don't care about any thing outside of their pityful little world. They don't even have a shared community proberly due to all those server shards. If they did it should have been no problem for them to gather enough votes on this site.
And you're right that EVE doesn't have the highest number of players, but did you ever consider that it might be on purpose? CCP started out small and are growing with the success. They're trying to make the game they want and doesn't really seem to be in it for the big profit imo.
Originally posted by Wrayeth Just because the graphics don'tAlso have the highest poly/particle count doesn't mean they can't be good. There's a differents between best graphics technology and best graphics. The first is based on poly count and particle density, and the second is based on the overall effect that the graphics produce. Yes, Everquest 2 probably deserves best for graphics technology, but when everything comes together, I'd have to say EVE's graphics equal or exceed those of EQ 2. (If you really want to get into it, I could cite how EQ 2's character graphics tend to follow the old "plastic" cliche - the characters look like they're made of plastic and not flesh and bone, among other things.)
When it comes to graphics, Art Direction and overall texture/atmosphere has a lot to say. A chaotic, uncomprehensible mix of styles does not make for "Best Graphics".
"Best Graphics" is not a competition in "who has the most polygons", any more than the "best game" is a competition of "who has the most subscribers.
I've been a beta tester for EVE, and i'am a player of WoW, so i feel i can give my 5 pennies to this thread.
In my humble oppinion EVE earn his place in Favorite Company, since without any doubt they invested more in the client than WoW. The network seems more stable and customer and tech support are better.
In the graphic award i can say EVE and WoW are both winners, EVE have a very good art concept regarding the space and tecno "ambience", and WoW delivered us the good and unique art concept of Warcraft, that unlike a post i saw in this thread, isnt the easy way, since the easy way are concepts like Lineage and Everquest, very "3D" assemblance, good graphics but they dont interact with player. They just seem computer landscapes wallpappers.
The best game award to EVE seems to me a deserved prize in the overall of all awards for CCP.
I like to play WoW far better than EVE, because i dont like space games, and the role-play was im my humble oppinion kinda boring (trips take much time, griding takes much time), in fact i consider more EVE a Strategy/Action game than a RPG/Action game.
"jpfo" sounds exactly like the average EVE player.
You should come back to EVE "jpfo" - A lot has happened since beta and you sound like a person bound to be popular
I happen to play WoW and EQ off and on (non-seriously) alongside EVE myself. They all have their good sides. EVE is just... the most special. Different. I care. It's just how it is.
Now if only people would get over the fact that WOW & the other robe-donning tranny games LOST!!
I won't take anything away from CCP on all four of their wins, bottom line is they got the most votes on those four categories regardless of the fact that they are 100, 200, 250 times smaller than WoW. Eve players voted in larger proportion than WoW players. There's always the 2006 Readers Choice Awards to be more proactive and show your support to your favorite game.
One thing I found interesting in the "Favorite company" category was a company as large as SOE with many titles on the market could not even get 5% of the vote.
And you're right that EVE doesn't have the highest number of players, but did you ever consider that it might be on purpose? CCP started out small and are growing with the success. They're trying to make the game they want and doesn't really seem to be in it for the big profit imo.
I find this talk about profit funny since Oveur owns a Ferrari Enzo and their is a fairly good chance it was him that fried the cluch and left it unlocked and abandoned on the side of the road. Linkage I wonder if Oveur's Mom, she runs the kitchen at CCP, made him do dishes for a month for that one
But its things like this that makes the EvE dev team rock. They will hang out and drink a few beers with the player base at events, hell even if they just happen to be in town they will take the time to met you in the local pub.
Every single member of the CCP loves EvE like their child. Oveur isn't afraid to put money back to to the game at no extra cost to the consumer i.e. The 3 major content updates that have been released in my 1 year of playing.
EvE will be around long after WoW has been replaced with the next pop mmo.
I think the writer of this article should use spell checking. You "right a ship", not "rite a ship" (unless you're smashing a champagne bottle against the hull). You "strike a chord", not "strike a cord."
1: "EVE didn't deserve the graphics award, it has way less polygons than EQ2!!!!!!"
Blood 2 isn't better looking than Unreal Tournament 2004, even though they use the same engine. Or even more extreme: Blood 2 doesn't look better than Wheel of Time, even though Blood 2 uses a better engine.
Anyway, point is: Polygons and texture resolution don't make graphics. Yes, they are important, and it's nice to have higher res everything, but a certain point, it becomes useless. EQ2 is way too hardwarehungry to get any award for graphics atm anyway, because even at max graphics it doesn't invoke the same mood as WoW for example.... It doesn't feel alive. The game tries to look realistic and believable, but that's exactly where it fails.
I didn't vote, but if i did it would ahve been a toss-up between EVE and WoW, because both can invoke a feeling when seeing the graphics. You can *feel* that you're there, which is even more the case for WoW than it is for EVE, which is a reason why i still play it
Graphics are there to make the world belieavable and immersive, not to exhaust your computer hardware and to make you buy new stuff for it.
2: "EVE sucks, i played for 2 days and it's boring!"
EVE is a game that requires patience and planning. It's not a game of instant gratification like most other mmo's out there, including WoW and EQ2. You can't just max a char and go play endgame stuff, because you can't max a char.... At least, not within 50 years. And that's no joke. Also, there's no endgame content, because there's no endgame.
Patience is and stays the keyword for the game. If you don't have it, you won't like it. Commitment is also a necessary trait - again, if you don't have it, you won't like it. Accomsplishing anything takes a long time.
3: "The vote was rigged, mmorpg.com has too many eve fanbois, this was just a popularity contest"
WoW has 50 times the accounts of EVE. It eve has 5 times the number of posts on this very site. There are more people bashing eve than there are defending it, and some who are defending it don't even have EVE as their favourite game. According to this, for most people, a game is better than another if it has more subs than the other.
So why, if i may ask, didn't WoW win in all categories if it was a popularity contest?
Why, if the accusations of being rigged would be true, did no one in any of the other game's camps try to do this?
According to the forums, WoW has more people on here than EVE, so WoW should ahve won in all categories. But, it didn't. That shows that people can objectively vote for the games they think ar best in a given category. Why can't you just take peace in that, instead of bashing a game you didn't even play properly? If someone else says 'WoW sucks, i played it for 2 days and it's boring', wouldn't you be upset about it too, because 2 days is by no means a good period to test a game properly? Especially since even WoW needs some getting into before it gets really fun.
Anyway, i see every basher here just trolling eve and making pointless and untrue accusations as to why EVE won the vote. I really can't get my head around that..... makes me think of this all the time.
To start with id like to let you non eve fans know something about the games developers/owners.
When they made EVE they had 2 objectives the first was of course to make a game that would earn money and have some good profit - in this they succeeded.
The other objective was to amke there dream game belive it or not but for a lot of them Elite is a game they all loved and miss so they wanted to amke a PvP game with eliments of there dream game.
The second reason is why the dev team is so popular with the player base, They care about the game and activly engage with us both in game and in real life at events and in pubs
True everquest 2 doeas have a superior graphics engine but can all of its playerbase play at max graphics ?
Eve's graphics are not up to the pollycount of EQ2 but 2 things about the graphics makes it the best graphically.
1. The graphics that are there are very atmospheric. [i oncce remember minnig ore in an asteroid field once with a blue dwarf illuminating the dust combined with the rust on my ship and the great music it was very moody.
2. Most important of all is that the average computer can run it at max graphics with few problems Unlike with EQ2.
As you can guess eve isant the only mmorpg i have played ive played EQ2 for 3 months WOW for 1 month and neocron for 7 months Eve for 3 years.
Now eve isant for anyone i love it if you dont thats fine as long as you have a game out there that YOU enjoy im happy for you.
Originally posted by majoch as large as SOE with many titles on the market could not even get 5% of the vote.
I think thats because SWG is broken. When you can solo the 2nd hardest boss and get really high end loot, I think its safe to say R.I.P. Most of the time its gliched so you dont even have to take damage.
As for EQ2 - I only played the trial, but my first impression was the models looked pretty lame. People quickly went to WoW because they have more attractive modeling.
CCP probably is a great company. I haven't played EVE, but I can say first hand from my SWG experience there isn't a company in the world that screwed people more than SOE :P
i got to say that the bitterness shown by the fans of other MMO specialy WOW is quite childish, you comlain that this vote is a popularity contest..well let me hand you a clue..votes lie this ARE a popularity contest..if all the WOW felt dedicated enough to their game to take 5 mins out to vote there is no way in hell eve would win..as it is they obviously dont love WOW.
Now considering CCP is a new company and eve is there first major child, this is one hell of an accomplishment, EVE at is 3 years old and is contineously growing..when i started 13 months ago there were 12k online tops...now were hitting 23k..how many MMO will continue to grow at this rate 3 years after launch? soon EVE will be the first game with servers on the top 500 supercomputer list...thats how much deidcation CCP have to the game..they will spend that much $ to make sure we get the best expirience possible.
the main difference with CCP and other companys is that $$$ is not the no1 motivation for them, they love the game, and value their playerbase...and as such their player base values them.
the graphics may not techincaly be the best ever....but they sure as hell set the right mood and serve the game perfectly.
for those who think EVE shouldd not of been in the top pvp neverlone win it...that just shows you have not played this PVP BASED game
and as for best game? ive not seen any other mmo which offers so much depth, option or freedom..where any action taken by a player will have such a large effect on the world..where you have coporate and alliance warfares...hell last september there was even the first major civil war

Haha! Dont pop a vein kid. This thread would have made me cry if i wasnt laughing so hard while reading it. EvE won fair and square and it deserved every award it was nominated in. Personally im a bit dissapointed it wasnt nominated in more categories, that would have been even more fun.
_____________________ I am the flipside of the coin on which the troll and the fanboy are but one side.
Eve won, and it deserved to. It has won plenty other awards too.
If you play WoW, the chances are you won't like Eve and the Eve community won't like you, so don't bother trying it. If you play EQ, GW or most other MMORPGS then download the trial of Eve and give it a bash if you haven't tried it already.
From the traffic on the eve main page it looks like you already are.
----------------------------- 'Argueing with an Eve player is like argueing with a religous nut. '
As the graphics win of EvE seems to be controversial the question is how do you define "best graphics"?
Choice a) Most Polys? Use of newest available graphics features? If thats your defenition of good graphics then EvE probably didnt deserve to win this category.
Choice b) Style and quality of design? If thats your defenition of good graphics then EvE probably deserved to win in the graphics category.
On a little sidenote - Every design pro will tell you good design is timeless.

Hi all.
Cheers to all
"jpfo" sounds exactly like the average EVE player.
EVE Online is NOT just "a game", it's simply a wonderful virtual reality.
Keep up the outstanding work, CCP !
Eve is a well deserved win in all catagories! I'm very happy to see Eve take so many catagories!
I think the writer of this article should use spell checking. You "right a ship", not "rite a ship" (unless you're smashing a champagne bottle against the hull). You "strike a chord", not "strike a cord."
Otherwise, was a decent article.
To all EVE bashers:
Playing: WF
Played: WoW, GW2, L2, WAR, AoC, DnL (2005), GW, LotRO, EQ2, TOR, CoH (RIP), STO, TSW, TERA, EVE, ESO, BDO
Tried: EQ, UO, AO, EnB, TCoS, Fury, Ryzom, EU, DDO, TR, RF, CO, Aion, VG, DN, Vindictus, AA
Meanwhile have fun
Yes because we all know putting a ship on auto pilot and going to the store while it travels 40 minutes is actually playing a mmorpg.
Clearly, you sir have never done any of the following things in eve:
Flown in a fleet
Run a high dificulity complex
Put a POS up (Player Owned Starbase)
helped out in a corp mining op
Etc...
MM stands for Mass Multiplayer. Remeber that.
Grats to CCP ;-)
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
i got to say that the bitterness shown by the fans of other MMO specialy WOW is quite childish, you comlain that this vote is a popularity contest..well let me hand you a clue..votes lie this ARE a popularity contest..if all the WOW felt dedicated enough to their game to take 5 mins out to vote there is no way in hell eve would win..as it is they obviously dont love WOW.
Dantes inferno
MASS corp
Stain Alliance
EVE onlin3
Woohoo. Wtg EVE. I do love WoW too though so it was a hard choice. I do feel lucky to have two such games to play.
And dare I say, *raspberry* to you SOE. Take your EQ and crap and shove da grind up yer tooters.
Haha! Dont pop a vein kid. This thread would have made me cry if i wasnt laughing so hard while reading it. EvE won fair and square and it deserved every award it was nominated in. Personally im a bit dissapointed it wasnt nominated in more categories, that would have been even more fun.

Lol this thread really makes me laugh.

'Argueing with an Eve player is like argueing with a religous nut. '
Congrats to CCP and their title EvE
As the graphics win of EvE seems to be controversial the question is how do you define "best graphics"?
Choice a)
Most Polys? Use of newest available graphics features?
If thats your defenition of good graphics then EvE probably didnt deserve to win this category.
Choice b)
Style and quality of design?
If thats your defenition of good graphics then EvE probably deserved to win in the graphics category.
On a little sidenote - Every design pro will tell you good design is timeless.
