The term is an acronym made from 6 words. These words have definitions according to the English language. They are definable and are established. For this or any other site to say otherwise is misuse. This is NOT subjective. And while one can argue the exact number that is "Massively" is subjective, it is NOT 5 or 6. These are NOT opinions but actual definitions. It's not even common use, it's marketing. They're trying to get their products in front of more people. Now, all the sudden because Superdata (As if that company's credibility isn't in question), publishes a list of MMOs that includes a 1v1 game on it is considered an MMO because of "common usage"?
as if the literal meaning of the words matter ..
Yes, meanings matter, otherwise we'd have something like this in our everyday language.
Who cares what Massively has to say? I remember last year, them predicting ESO would fail before any MMO that would launch in 2014. I pointed to Wildstar in the comments, saying if any would fail it would be it or it would be first. Due to the new IP, the watered down vanilla wow feeling, the combat due to optimization issues and the 40 man raids.
I also wondered if the grudge they had against ESO, had anything to do with the statement. Again in the comments.
I was called a troll by fans of the website and by one of writers as well. Wildstar fans especially hated my point and told me how wrong I was, that ESO sucks. I just laughed at the whole thing I did not go back.
I was always told it was a joke of a MMO site, and to call the writers there journals was laughable. I played it off as hate, but it was pretty close to correct. I just used it for my MMO news back then. Did not know about MMORPG.
But praising Wildstar and hating ESO, sat funny with me. Just because they didn't even question Wildstar at all. It was obvious they prefered Carbine. So I left, and became a lurker here for a long time. I enjoy many of the posters here.
Even the worst articles here are better than the best Massively has to offer. Same goes for WoW insider. Matthew Rossi drives me nuts and even though I play WoW I'll get news some other way.
LoLs name even says it is not an MMO.. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena. A lobby based game where you click find match does not qualify to use the term MMO. Just because there are many people playing it doesnt make it so. Seriously..Going by this then the Battlefield and Call of Duty games are MMOFPSs and that is just plain silly.
Games that are MMOs are games like Planetside , EQ , WoW , LoTRO..etc.. Games where there are many players playing in the same world you are .. a persistent world. There are MMOFPS and MMORPGs and I think some MMORTS.. Let me know when there is an MMOMOBA.
Desinty is the same.. It has a graphic lobby but you are never around more than your group or a few other players in the " open world " sections of free play mode.
If people don't like what games massively covers and their editorials I'm curious why they like this site since its MUCH worse in both regards. Editorials here are complete dumpster fires and games listed barely even have an online component in some cases.
MMORPG.com in general can't really talk trash about anyone else, the whole place is just a disaster with a URL. One of the worst communities I have ever seen and they put their forum posts front and center on their homepage.
When you type in "Massively" in the search window, it's a bit more clear.
If only it was that simple... there is something much more deeply wrong, and there is nothing any of us can do in order to fix that. It is not confusion.
Consider a simple term like "Roleplayer". Defined as "a player whom uses a character within a gaming world, whom makes decisions for the character based from the perspective of the character, as opposed to making decisions based from the perspective of the player."
This guy's argument to this is, "That definition does not apply to enough gamers, and thus roleplayer should mean gamer and does mean gamer based on the companies' and news articles' use of the term. AND... it does not matter anyway."
There is no getting anything to sink in with this guy.
This site is constanly debating definitions. But those are generally jargon terms. "Sandbox" vs "Theme Park", "P2W" etc.
But those are terms that were birthed from these games and thus do not have an established definition but more or less a contex based on the games that they originated from. But this thread as with so many other threads and posts from this OP don't focus on these types of terms, He's trying to alter established language and then telling everyone who doesn't agree that it's their "opinion"............as-if.
But based on Language we have to have structure and definitions or we simply cannot communicate effectively.
An acceptable (At least to me) use of an expanded definition based on your example above might be something as follows:
1. The Roleplayer in the sense of taking on a "persona" The Traditional Roleplayer if you will.
2. Then there is the Roleplayer in the sense of filling a class role. Such as playing a a Healer, Tank, CC-Support, or DPS , etc.
Both references fit the definition you posted above, Assuming your definition came from a legitimate source, so both would be acceptable.
If the OP's interpretations were structured within the official English definitions given the term "Massively Multi-player" He could maintain a legitimate argument. But when we see 1v1 games being tossed in there just to get the name out to as many readers as possible, it's not an expanded definition.
Both references fit the definition you posted above, Assuming your definition came from a legitimate source, so both would be acceptable.
There is no such thing as a legitimate source of definitions of how terms are used in gaming. Otherwise, why are people here debating about the definitions of MMO, MMORPG, sandbox, themepark, RPing ..... every day?

Originally posted by filmoret So according to the OP these games are dealing with a massive amount of players the incorrect way. If they dealt with the massive amount of players differently then they could call themselves a massive multiplayer online game. Instead he wants them to call it a multiplayer online game. Even though the gaming companies are dealing with a massive amount of players. The word massive addresses the amount of players they are dealing with not the place they are put.
So if a lot of people would play a chess game it would be a MMO? Because they all play the same chess game online? In fact it would mean EVERY online game is a MMO, because they all have the potential to get a lot of gamers.

Going through this thread I find it quite amusing how precious few people actually agree with senselessness of the OP.
What a bloody train wreck.

I just read that now every game on steam is considered an MMO because lots of people are all playing them at the same time and you have to have your steam client connected to play.

and i quote "check out some of the MMORPG genre's winter holiday events and promotions, conveniently rounded up for you in our guide below. The list isn't exhaustive, so feel free to chime in with any we've missed that you love."
And what is included in the list? and i quote
"Destiny: "Be on the lookout for some small stocking stuffers sometime after the Holidays have come and gone."
"League of Legends: Snowdown brings sales and skins and new game modes to the biggest online game in the world."
"World of Tanks: Global maps on are ceasefire through the holidays!"
"World of Warplanes: A snowball mode has joined the game for the holiday season"
I bet they think MOBA and instanced pvp games are MMOs too.
Yes, it seems the ignorant and stupid think that MMOs are 4-12 player matches.
Merry Christmas.

Do Coney Islands only sell Coney dogs? This is such a non issue that it's frankly amazing to me that you guys can even hold a debate about it, isn't there something a little more substantive that you can argue about. They don't actually think these games are MMOs, but they are popular online games that share a lot of the same players as actual MMOs so why shouldn't they have some coverage on them. Expansion can be a very important factor in a successful business, anyone with a brain could tell you that.

Now I see the source of your confusion. When I go to:
