I voted for the first time in this site a few days ago and here are some things i want to say.
Just by witnessing the stance some users are holding here. I've also been watching the comments here on this section and i've made some conclusions.
According to ESO voters :
A) Whenever there's a comment that bashes ESO (justified or not) from a supposed "ESO hater", it's always a true projection of how the LOTRO players or the ESO Haters are. The comment is 100% true and gets quoted by ESO players , to prove something. How superior is the ESO community to all their haters (for whatever reasons).
Whenever there's a good comment for LOTRO, Elder Scrolls supporters start saying things like "you can't be serious" , "OMG have you ever played ESO???".
C) Whenever there's a comment that presents part of the ESO community badly (see that comment that the guy said that he voted ESO and made multiple accounts to do so, and he forced his friends in his guild to do the same thing),ESO supporters, either didn't say a thing or there were people that quoted him and "Proved" he was trolling.
D) By the way when a comment that presents part of the LOTRO community badly those same users instantly quote his comment as something which is true and sincere. Everyone who doesn't like ESO after all is a hater and a peasant. (also see 1)
E) But when ESO supporters were complaining that "Lotro was getting a vote every 5 minutes...This is certain abuse of multiple voting". It is so weird that a game gets 1 vote every 5 minutes, but it's not the same for ESO... By the way where did you get the stats that it's 1 vote every 5 minutes? Is there a graph or a total counter that says how many votes each game has?
No? Well thought so.
ESO players have set it their personal crusade to prove how superior their game is. Well i'm sorry, but anyone with a decent IQ can understand your pretty sick gaps in logic and convenience arguments ("I take an assumption as fact, only when it's convenient for my ideology).
Keep it up. People are already talking seriously the possibilty of ESO becoming F2P (while Zenimax said quite the opposite all those years) and will become one more P2W fest .
Iselin, guard this vote with tooth and nail. If LOTRO surpasses ESO , Satan will eat our children...
people have been shouting F2P about eso the whole time, there is nothing P2W about this game. no one is trying to shove eso down your throat, but they will tell you when your opinion is not true.
and i think you are wrong about eso crusaders. they arent all trying to tell you the game is superior. most of what i see is people saying its not as bad as the jump the gun reviews at launch, its is in fact enjoyable to play and it deserves a second look. (or in the case of players who never tried it, should consider doing so).
the community in eso is helpful and the steady flow of subscribers has always meant theres other players around at your level all the time. (im an altaholic, so ive seen continued growth at lower levels)
but none of what an eso fanboi might say in response to ill informed broadcasting particularly in this thread has anything to do with LotRO. the differences between the 2 are incomparable. its not hate from the Lotro community that makes eso players rally in defence. its the popular opinion of negativity that in most cases is a skewed point of view.
eso community isnt hating on Lotro either, personally from what i read about lotro written by its actual community is that its full of turmoil and the game is winding down. in fact i sympathise with a community that has to watch their favorite game beign neglected by its devs. its really quite frustrating when players care more than the creators. i have experienced that a few times now but zenimax are NOT devs that do things half assed in this case. perhaps thats the benefit of subscriptions..
Originally posted by Athisar Yeah, it couldn't possibly be that LOTRO has a lot of dedicated players and a strong community who are happy to vote for it, with forum support and people posting in game to vote? Or that it's actually a good game?
Anything is possible but then again....
In the past year ESO had 6,426,661 unique hits in this site, the second most was Wildstar around 3 Mil and on down to Neverwinter @ #10 with just over 1 Mil... LOTRO is somewhere below that because they only publish the top 10. And those are just hits... positive, negative or indifferent.
So yeah, whether you like LOTRO or not, this is an ESO yay or nay vote.
LOTRO in its first year would have had many more hits as well. It's an old game that's had very little news in the past year. Hits on here mean nothing about how good a game is or its player base.
i agree it doesnt give evidence of a games quality. but it does give an indication of popularity.
you have to admit there is something else going on when u look at the difference between ESO at 1. and WS at 2.
it seems good and bad press = popularity.
Or that drama = popularity. People stop to look at car wrecks. If two people get into a fight in the middle of the street a crowd gathers to watch. Cops come and arrest someone in public, suddenly everyone wants to see. Doesn't make any of the people involved better liked.
hmmmm cant say i bothered stopping by any game's pages more than once if i was curious about playing it.
that is to say, why would anyone check a page out unless they wanted to learn more about it?
makes sense to me that the people playing it wouldnt have need to read its reviews on here.
so whats left? people considering playing it and or haters checking the validity of their own claims?
Voted ESO and EVE. I've loved ESO ever since beta. I don't care what anyone else says. And I played LOTRO for about a week two years ago just to try it out, got one character to level cap, and it was not even remotely interesting to me. I felt I gave it a good try.
EVE is of course awesome, but I don't feel I have time for the level of organization and involvement it requires. My vote is a little unfair since I haven't played TSW, but it wasn't something I even wanted to try so I feel justified.
its obvious eve is far better, bigger more feature rich, mature and sexier than all of those games.
it should breeze past tsw, but unfortunately votes are most likely riddled with people who havent even tried the game or know anything about it.
Though I voted for EvE myself, I have played both and I think I have a decent guess at the issue here - EvE has poor combat, quests, and PvE in general. It is a great sandbox title, and it has incredible upsides - enormous large scale fights, the largest single shard game, incredible economics, etc... but the people that voted for TSW are doing it because TSW has the best questing in any MMORPG, while EvE has some of the worst.
TSW shows that questing can be a mentally engaging activity, involving suspense, combat, problem solving, and story telling. In EvE quests only have the combat. If CCP could put some more effort into quests EvE might be winning this entire competition right now. I would adore quests that tell more of the games lore and story - being an Amarr based player myself (amarr rep, gallentean character) I would get the absolute best of this. I read the EvE Chronicles even now while I am not playing the game - the lore for EvE is deep, unique, interesting, just awesome. None of that finds its way into the game, unfortunately. If you do not know what I am talking about check here:
Really though, I hope everyone tries out both of them. They really both need to be experienced, absolutely incredible games with unique standard-defying features.
Ohhh yeah, put him in the corner ESO, and give him a whoopin'!
And now I shall go back to actually playing ESO. Now that a crappy computer's no longer standing between us, our love's great again. (and I find myself marveling at how gorgeous the game is, and the level of detail in its design.)
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
I just came to the entertaining conclusion that unless EVE manages to claim third spot, the entire MMORPG.COM top three MMOs will be themeparks. xD
Which is an amusing notion considering how much this community tends to chant "Sandbox uber alles!"

People chant one thing and quietly do another.
It doesn't surprise me at all. There's a lot of digital ink used here to promote sandboxes, forced grouping, full loot PVP, harsher death penalties.... even perma-death. But mmorpg gamer's habits seem to indicate they spend their money on more casual pursuits.
People like to think of themselves as gaming badasses but very few--especially those who are adults with families and jobs--actually are

Been coming to mmorpg.com for awhile now, but newly registered. Only registered because I wanted to throw my weight behind ESO. It's a great game. Haven't had this much draw to an MMO since the early days of EQ and DAoC, so that says something to me about it and the team behind it, not to mention the community of players.
Tried LotRO when it first came out and it didn't catch me, but I'm sure it's a great game as well, as both EVE and TSW must be as well, to have lasted for this long. I did vote for TSW since I am a World of Darkness fan and TSW just smacks of WoD from what I have seen and incites more desire for me to play than EVE.
At the heart, its not just the MMO's but the people who play them that make them all so awesome.

A very classy post. And those are the same reasons I find myself drawn to TSW and enjoy the stories in it so much.
Great setting + the devs and writers did a great job with the storylines in that game.

Yeah sandbox will always be niche until someone builds a polished one the right way. At the moment themeparks ARE better except I've been playing eve and it's pretty cool. Feel exactly like a space cowboy.
Also very pleased to see my game take a well deserved third place!
My two favorites won this round, so I'm with you there.
Congrats ESO, LOTRO and TSW! (Now I just have to get around to playing LOTRO sometime, I finally installed it a few days ago, but I'm too hooked on ESO to try it atm.)

Pointless as ESO has more players and a developer who is not shy about letting all players know about this contest via a splash message on the login screen.
If Blizzard did the same on their launcher though.....
But they don't care about these meaningless contests because they don't need the publicity.
Smaller devs like ZoS and Funcom do however - otherwise they wouldn't bother either.
It would be great to see this broken down in two ways:
A poll including all votes (which will be ESO and TSW wins - the two companies that let their players know about the contest)
And a poll excluding ALL votes from new accounts - I'd love to see that

ESO community says W
LOTRO community says X
EVE community says Y
TSW community says Z
...does it really even matter?
Try the games out in their current state. Like them vote yes to them.
What a dumb poll.
