[General Article] Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Goes Unlimited on St. Patrick’s Day

The rumors can end now, folks. It’s official, as of this moment in time. Elder Scrolls Online is ditching its subscription model in favor of a model more akin to Guild Wars 2. Simply buy the base game, gain access to all of its content, and never pay another dime. In addition, the PS4 and XBOX One Editions will be launching officially on June 9th. It’s all coming up Tamriel this year, it seems. However, that’s not quite all she wrote.

In addition, Bethesda will offer ESO Plus to players who wish to pay a single monthly charge for  a premium membership service, providing exclusive in-game bonuses, a monthly allotment of crowns to use in the store and access to all DLC game packs while a member. PC/Mac players with active subscriptions on March 17 will be automatically enrolled into ESO Plus and begin enjoying its membership privileges.

Sweet! That's great news. I wasn't all that surprised, though, since they probably want to get as many box sales for console as they can (and they'll have one with me). I played the PC version, but going to console with a sub might become contentious, especially since they're using a franchise that has never used that model and, also, been a staple on the console market for a long time. Great move IMO.

THEY COPIED THE GW2 LITERALLY. ESO dont have enough people and they need to go B2P if they want to get some money like GEMS STORE in GW2. but people will still play GW2 after the big incoming expansion :)

    [mod edit]

Surprised the PC gets the B2P switch before the console release but it's pretty well what I expected.

GW2 is a good model for that game.

I hope the ESO crown-shop isn't too cheesy with the pets and costumes. We'll have to see.

Just read the news on PCGamer and wanted to make the link. Damn, am I glad I bought the game and DID NOT pay a dime on subscriptions.

Glad I am one of the people who could care less and will continue to enjoy the game regardless. Some people wrap themselves up in this shit a little to much lol.

So is this a thread about this announcement and discussion of said announcement or for what it seems to be turning into?

It's going to be crickets for most of them for a while.

On a side note, I wonder how the cash-to-crown conversion rate is going to be.

  • They basically did a paid beta on pc and milked their customers for console release lol. I'm actually happy about this. I'll buy this game on ps4 and play it peacefully without any bugs and bots...

Looks good. Might actually have to go back and take a look at this one once it hit. Have not bothered with it since beta as finances have been strained enough without a sub game on top of them.

This have been a good conversation

ESO was always planned to be a console game. From the start, the limited action bar, the ridiculous linear inventory, all screamed console. Most likely, they planned on going B2P when the console launched in the first place; the PC version was a paid beta test in essence.

Now it remains to be seen how intrusive the cash shop is. Will it be a blatant cash grab like so many recent games? Or a moderate shop with cosmetics only? Or will ESO go the full gambling route with lockboxes, keys, and RNG?

In any case, the player base will go down a notch in quality.

Played CB, OB and and took the pre-order, enjoyde the game for 5 months and at that time I would have said no way this game would become F2P or B2P.

Now...today it doesn't come as a suprise that it is going B2P. Might even consider returning when it goes live. But to be honost allot of new games coming out and GTA5 while delayed till march will most definitly get most out of my attention.

No they released the game as a subscription game for the PC and it obviously did not net them the profit they wanted so they are switching to a B2P model, simple as that. I don't know why some people get off on anything they can throw in someone face or make into some negative or jab lol.

Part of me (The financial side) is very happy it's going B2P. I appreciate the money saved, and actually hope they have a nice cash shop, because I want to show my support for a game I've enjoyed for so long whenever I can afford it.

The other part of me? Weeps for the drastic shift that is likely to occur in the community... And the campaign queues.. Ack...

We'll see what we'll see, but I know I'll keep playing.

  • SatyrosSatyros Member UncommonPosts: 156

Well.. ESO  was fun while it lasted.

Lets see what else is out there for me to play.

  • ScalplessScalpless Member UncommonPosts: 1,426
Not a surprising move. I'm a bit tempted to return to ESO now, but the beta was bland enough for me to get bored before the weekend ended. I suspect a change to B2P is the only way they could gain a respectable console audience, as console players aren't used to subs and have to pay for online already.
