If what you say is true, then you have made my year.

It makes sense and would work. Just wish it was today...

    Thanks for the 411

Boy, do I hope you guys are right!  I was sort of hoping since the Game Developers Conference is this week they would use that PR platform to make the split announcment if there is one.

Well, KOTOR and all that may be ok, but the real apeal in SWG for me was the concealed SW theme, presented through a complex MMO. Yes, it lacked that in-your-face Star Wars feeling, but at the same time achieved incredible SW atmosphere. Many will say it was a crappy game, but in many cases, it was the poor implementation that held it back.

KOTOR and similar concepts are all great, nothing to bash them. But transplanting the same concept into a MMO world doesn't really work. For me at least. I'm sick of the linear story-telling, the driven narration. And if it has any semblance to KOTOR, then it will be all about jedi (nothing wrong with that, but while jedi is the principal story element behind the movies, it doesn't work for mmo).

SWG and Koster's vision of mmos might not be everyone's cup of tea, but at least it gave a radical break from everything else. Looking into the future, I just don't see much alternative to the baseline that WoW set. Linear "kill x stuff for y xp" quests storyline, with carefully and controlled designated pvp areas, no persistent content apart from your bank (might be something else, don't know enough about WoW), but seems like too many are going for that concept.

My opinion always was, that original SWG was a great MMO, set against the SW setting. Sadly, it got killed, without ever even attempting to fix it. That was the downfall, and unfortunately a great precedent for everyone making mmos, who'll avoid anything and everything it offered, for wrong reasons.

The post makes sense, if it's true we'll see soon enough.

On a serious note .... /sarcasm-off .... and providing that this is good accurate information and not just speculation......

I would not anticipate anything being rolled out until they get preCU with JTL, RoW, and ToOW all working at one time ... THEN roll it out and allow people to play.

I can't believe with what has transpired with $OE that they will do nothing short of rolling out a complete package.

Bioware and Pandemic will do a great job on this, I suspect the graphics will be top notch, and game play very fun, and a great story. I dont think that this new version of the game will be like anything that has been played and I am pretty sure that this click and wait 10 mins combat will never be coming out of Bioware, I have a feeling you will see amix of both pre-cu and nge but done a lot better which will look nothing like it does now.

I'm hoping a little as possible from the NGE will make it in .. hopefully nothing from NGE ...NGE has left a HUGE bad taste in people mouths and may prevent alot of people from coming back.

For me ... if it was my call ... NGE can stay home.

And where does it say in that link anywhere that the new mmo they are working on isnt SWG?

  • kairaenekairaene Member Posts: 256

    See this one?

    So I investigated....And I found out a few things;

    * They did open up shop in Austin
    * They are looking to hire 25 DEVS with SWG Pre-CU experience in CODE WRITING (Confirmed by phone call to BIOWARE HR department by me)
    * They showed up to the big job fair at the Airport Marriot here in Austin. (I was there as well with Microsoft)

    Locked but not deleted.

everyone is holding out for hope that SWG can be saved by another company but I doubt this will happen. I packed up my houses and closed my accounts months ago and I've moved on. About the only way we may see a Pre-cu server is that SWGEmu project, other than that SOE has and always will have SWG to ruin.

I used to believe these rumors but learned that unless it comes in the form of a press release it's most likely untrue, the NGE mole being the only exception to that I've seen so far.

No matter what happens the SWG forums are already showing signs of massive locking.

As for if it is true or not... When has anything connected with Lucas been that far out in the open? I think we will be waiting for E3 to get all the answers....

  • AntariousAntarious Member UncommonPosts: 2,846
"Hey Ant, would you be so quick to admit your companies' largest failure of all time?  I don't think SOE is dying to tell anyone this...  This could very well mean the death of their company...

Imagine if SOE came out and said, "Sorry folks, we tried our best with SWG, but we are not in the position to offer you this game anymore (license being pulled)."...  Everyone would have a fit!  SOE would forever be the poster child of MMO fuck ups (pardon the French), if they aren't already...

I think the people at SOE are racking their brains trying to come up with something to say about this that won't make them look bad...  lol, watch, they become so delusional with their rhetoric when the say something like this:  "Over 80% of veterans are still playing, even though the servers are shut down"..."

Major problem is... you missed the entire point the OP made and my response to it somehow.

This has nothing to do with SOE announcing anything in anyway.

It has to do with OP sayingt their source said the license was pulled by LAE... thus at whatever point SOE no longer has the game period.

The announcement I was referring to was BioWare's of the Austin Studio and the MMO in development.  Beyond that if LAE had pulled the license as the OP said their source said... The point was that LAE would in my opinion have tied themself to that BioWare announcement in some way.

To let SOE continue to suck the life what little if left out of a LAE branded game is nothing but bad press for LAE... further creating a bad taste, reputation etc to rebound from if the OP has in fact been given correct information.

What positive spin is there to put on it... At some point the BS would cease if the license has already been pulled. (that's what the OP said not me... that the source said the license is gone.. not maybe but IS).

I mean you give the example "we have 80 percent veteran retention" followed by the idea they say sorry closing servers down.

How about the EQ2 producer letter which roughly said before KOS expansion:

"EQ2 is growing every month we have as many players as the average MMO... but we need to consolidate them so the players can find each other.  Due to the massive size of our game.."

Um hello? 80% vet retention is the same shining example of logic cover with BS..  EQ2 is no larger than any other MMO I played... and its growing yet consolidating servers err it already consolidated.

Maybe if you look at the parent company Sony Corp you'll glean how this is SOP.

In Nov they announced there would be a fiscal year loss of almost $90 million.  Two months later (january of this year) they suddenly said... Instead of losing $90 we will have a profit of almost 600 million (they said at that time the PS3 would most likely be delayed but it was factored in).

Now they announce the PS3 delay and are trying to figure out how to explain how the -$90 million in two months went to about +$560 million and now is back to a loss...

This seems pretty standard for Sony at this point if you want to look at it from the press release side.

    And to end the ramble...

I agree with you if it was up to SOE with any brains they'd not want this info out.

But what the OP stated would mean one thing... SOE has no say in the matter.  The license was pulled the deal with BioWare was signed.

So if it was true... LAE could get some good press or at least try... with the announcement rather than soak in the cesspool that is SOE and SWG.

Sometimes all we have is hope. SOE/LA failed us. We get first hand accounts of focus tests and see the questions being asked. So, at the present SWG's future isnt certain at all. The original incarnation may very well be dying at the hands of SOE and emu servers may very well be all we have in the long run.

I'd like to think were all fairly bright here. We see alot of things going on and were trying to put 2+2 together. Sometimes were right and sometimes were wrong. But for some of us all we have is hope.

And for me I just really want to see what kind of reply we get from SOE about it all. I have watched them butcher a game I loved for years and am going to enjoy their less than graceful bow off the stage. Perhaps thats the closure I need.

This isn't rumor, BTW. I found all this out myself.

Anyone can call and confirm this for themselves. Although I wouldnt be surprised if their phone lines are flooded now lol.

here it is the real true Biowear asking for space code writing Devs

BioWare Corp. Announces New "BioWare Austin" Studio

New Studio Recruiting for Massively Multiplayer Online RPG Project

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada, March 13, 2006

Canadian videogame developer BioWare Corp. has announced the opening of a new studio, BioWare Austin, based in Austin, Texas. It is the second of BioWare's studios and the first to be located outside of Canada.

BioWare Austin has already begun work on a Massively Multiplayer Online roleplaying game (MMORPG) title; the new game will mark BioWare's debut in the Massively Multiplayer Online space. BioWare has recruited some of the top talent in MMO and RPG development, both to manage the development efforts at BioWare Austin and to collaborate with the experienced team at BioWare Edmonton, to develop a game that combines the best of BioWare's great past games with a compelling persistent online experience. Joining the Austin team as lead designer is James Ohlen, BioWare's Creative Director, whose previous credits include lead or co-lead design roles on Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™, Neverwinter Nights™, Baldur's Gate™ and Baldur's Gate II™. Also leading the BWA team are MMO veterans Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton. Richard Vogel brings 15 years of experience to BioWare Austin, previously serving as VP of Product Development for Sony Online Entertainment's Austin studio, as well as launching Ultima Online™ as a senior producer at Origin. Gordon Walton recently served as VP, studio manager and executive producer at Sony Online Entertainment as well as VP and Executive Producer at Electronic Arts.

"BioWare is committed to a seamless collaboration between our two studios to ensure the same high standards of quality and creativity our dedicated teams have always delivered," said Ray Muzyka, co-founder and Joint CEO of BioWare. "With our extensive heritage in the roleplaying genre, BioWare Austin is extremely well positioned to innovate in the massively multiplayer online space for BioWare's valued community of fans."

The new BioWare Austin comes soon after the formation of BioWare/Pandemic Studios, a partnership facilitated by private equity firm Elevation Partners. The new entity combines top videogame developers BioWare Corp., an industry leader in the role-playing game genre, and Pandemic Studios, an award-winning developer of best-selling action titles.

Both BioWare Austin and BioWare Edmonton currently have job openings for programmers, designers, artists, animators, world builders and writers, with new jobs being posted regularly. Applicants may view job postings and submit materials through jobs.bioware.com. BioWare Austin will also be recruiting, along with BioWare Edmonton and sister studios Pandemic Studios LA and Pandemic Australia, at the Game Developers Conference at the San Jose Convention Centre in San Jose, California, March 20-24, 2006.

I hope this is true. You guys also have to remember, i can see LA stripping the license from SOE and giving it to Bioware. Number 1, LA biggest attraction is star wars, with what SOE did, they are hurting LA's biggest seller. How many people already stated they will not buy any SOE and or LA product. By stating that they will be hurting LA's pockets b/c lets face it, star wars games is pretty much all they make over there, SOE has their other lame games, electronics and other half ass products to sell.

So im gonna say i hope this rumor is true b/c its pretty much all that we have left as far as hope.

its common sense folks, why else would Bioware SPECIFICALLY want coders with pre-cu experience ??? Call them yourselves to confirm. Do it fast, I wont be suprised if they catch wind of whats going on and put a lid on it
  • AntariousAntarious Member UncommonPosts: 2,846

"* They did open up shop in Austin
    * They are looking to hire 25 DEVS with SWG Pre-CU experience in CODE WRITING (Confirmed by phone call to BIOWARE HR department by me)
    * They showed up to the big job fair at the Airport Marriot here in Austin. (I was there as well with Microsoft) "

I know that was off the SWG forum but I got an answer for that one...

These jobs are listed on the BioWare webpage along with some other info that is actually related.  Specificly to this part:

"They are looking to hire 25 DEVS with SWG Pre-CU experience in CODE WRITING (Confirmed by phone call to BIOWARE HR department by me)"

"Please see each specific posting for the appropriate application email address."

    and

"If the job for which you are applying requests supplemental materials (artist demo/portfolio), please mail to:
    BioWare Corp.
    Human Resources
    200, 4445 Calgary Trail
    Edmonton, Alberta
    Canada T6H 5R7"

Reason I am noting this is if YOU go to the site yourself... one thing you will see is they do NOT accept phone calls about these jobs in any way.  The person who stated that said they called the BioWare HR department... I just find it odd since they are not accepting calls on these positions..

They also go into great detail on their "hiring" site about what they want.

In the Austin office as well as the Canadian office.

    ****

Now yes I want SWG back or something like it used to be (but better) and BioWare is better.  What is bothering me is there seems to be a lot of misinformation out and being spread rapidly... Which serves no purpose than to get our hopes up...

Like I said you can go to the BioWare site yourself and see what they are offering and how you can contact them or NOT contact them.  Then make your mind up on that yourself.

    http://www.bioware.com/bioware_info/jobs/austin_jobs/

that's the url by the way for the austin jobs with BioWare.
