The no skybox comment sounded interesting too seeing as ED does have a skybox.
Could you elaborate on this? At the moment they don't have more than 1 star system so are they talking about a skybox when going from planet to space or something? Elite basically has a skybox for each star system but a system can be phenomenal in size with multiple planets, moons, suns etc and you could fly to each of those without passing through a single load screen (if you were really inclined to).
During the little planet/sandstorm demo CR said there was no sky box and showed the sky and even the station stating it wasn't a sky box. He even said and zoomed a bit on the station that you could see the station rings turning.
I assume he means what you see when on the planets is what is happening and you can hop in a ship and fly towards a target and get there no load screens.
In ED You look at a star and it's a sky box essentially in that you can't point your ship and fly there unless it's in system. Any stars you see beyond the system, even if on a planet is part of the skybox and thus you need to jump there and go through a loading screen.
I like to call it the friendship drive!
I mean sure ED has big systems but they are mostly empty and boring but even going from planet to space has a mini load screen hiccup. I forget the tech jargon they use to describe it but it's not smooth.
I found it interesting in that there no hiccup compared to ED though I do think maybe you will have to jump from system to system like ED.
I backed ED too and like some of what they have done but frankly they still have a long way to go. I just got bored with ED and will check back in a couple "expansions", not in the mood to pay full game price for every xpack that adds stuff that should have been in the basic game.
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
@Erillion it is possible they can add that to Stanton, they did with it Delamar already that belongs to Nyx.
But until there's any word on that, no expectation is that we wouldn't visit a planet like this until we can travel to more than one solar system. Or visit it on SQ42 if that happens first.

That's pretty much a lot of work being put on LOD's, so it is real but it requires a lot of tuning down for performance sakes.
Some things we really can't complain much about, it'd be incredibly expensive to make it that "real" to a point while impressive it has a cost that isn't really that justified.

I wasn't complaining. I thought it was pretty good compared to what we have presently in ED, looks hella better for sure.

Oh yeah in terms of visuals they'll always push it to the best it can look.
What I really liked was the atmosphere, the whole lighting, the sunset effect on the sky is just beautiful, this one: http://imgur.com/E4CNX2M
When he does the jump planet>planet the sun positioning remains and the sunset was just perfect there. RP groups will be in heaven when it comes to this kind of stuff.

From the jump planet>planet the sun position and that sunset was just ...
Agreed stuff in ED always looks barren and dead, and tbh sometimes I think the graphic took a backward step from some of what we had in alpha/beta. Can't help but think it was due to some of the "optimization" after they released the console version.
To be fair though I am hoping when they have atmospheric planet landing in the game that will improve but ...dunno.

But what CR is saying is no different to what you're saying exists in Elite, you could take off from a planet in Elite, not engage supercruise and fly to another planet or to the sun or to a station without any loads screens if you were inclined to do so. I admit that the transition to supercruise mode is quite different in effect from SC's QD mode and I do like what they've done with QD. However I did think it looked a bit silly Quantum Driving straight from the planet's surface to space with no effect from the planet's mass etc.
Seeing the station from a planet was also a bit strange tbh, one wouldn't be able to see the USS with a gun scope from earth and certainly not with the scale or detail they were using in game.
As you say, I think when they implement multiple systems then we'll see the effect of the skybox in SC, much in the same way that it exists in Elite. With systems in both games being so large and distances so great it seems pointless making it possible to go from one system to another without a load screen, you'd get the occasional masochist you might do it once in a blue moon for science but that would be about it.

That's been clarified to just have been done for the demo purpose, on the game they are to not let you QT travel from planet>planet that way. The QT speed and such was also quite boosted.
That would be ridiculously OP, and also require one OP PC to render all that, that fast.

That's good to know, it did look a bit out of place. I wonder how that will work with the new speed changes and how far you'll need to be from the surface before you can engage QD.

After all this time they should have a playable version of that not just some tech demo.

If you saw the GC 3.0, when they leave that first planet they go through the exit, go a bit further away and then he says "that's far enough", so that shows kinda where it's going though no exact details on distances.
After all this time they should have a playable version of that not just some tech demo.
The playable is what was shown on the 3.0 future update, the tech demo is of the V2 version (that is not 3.0); that v2 is focused on breathable planets with atmospheres, vegetation, weather and stuff like that.

Define playable.
I have seen many games rush things and bring out playable games, cough cough, line of defense and frankly I would rather avoid that kind of playable and wait longer.
I am just playing something else while waiting.
