I enjoy taking a jab at SC any oppoturnity, but why is everyone here so serious? Its a funny video, hilarious bugs happen during every game development. Both the "see, I told you SC is shit" and " muh alpha" people need to calm down and have a laugh.

The reason is no release date. Only pledgeing and concept sales, going on 6yrs now.

If only stuff as this was posted because it was funny, and not to argue the game is shit...

I was speaking in a general sense, not referring solely to the OP. The dumbass AI is pretty funny though don't you agree?
Do you think this is that funny? This AI glitches are the usual glitches we from AI in games, that is clipping and bad pathfinding.

Now actual funny bugs in SC; that would be things like
    https://clips.twitch.tv/CleverFairQueleaKappaPride

Well that was meant to happen, but not with that knockback lol
I think it's very funny, moreso because of the number of years involved, the amount of money, the amount of staff and the amount of claims that have been made. It's a beautiful example of how time + money + staff =/= quality.

On a project of this complexity and scale that is rather understandable, it's known in normal game dev that the priority focus on bug-fixing and polish is one of the last things the game goes through, but in SC people are expecting that to happen mid-dev upon unfinished mechanics (such as AI on the example).

And this is why large scale dev projects happening behind closed doors have it better, they don't have to maintain and give access to a public release this early, it's like that famous sentence that mentions those who can't handle seeing the sausage getting made as it ain't pretty.

It's not even a case of "dumb ai". It's about a work in progress just like in any game in development not remotely relevant to be worth it's own thread.

Of course it's dumb AI, the guys are walking into walls repeatedly, how dumb does it need to be before you can admit something so obvious.
Saying it's an early work in progress is brown-nosing of the highest order, CitizenCon 2016 showed AI that was no better than what is in that video. So nearly 2 years and practically zero progress and you're going "REEEEEE early WIP REEEEEEE"

It's dumb or broken AI taken from 1 clip. Do they always act like this? Or are we just trying to make a chicken out of a feather? Either way, yeah the AI in the clip is clearly not functioning as promised.

But Babuinix isn't actually saying that the AI isn't dumb, so you two are cherry picking pieces from each other's statements for the sake of arguing.  I'm sure if you rephrase the question as "Are the NPCs in this clip acting dumb", he'd probably agree.

Concerning WIP and AI, do we know that they have had a team actively working on AI, specifically this AI? If we do, then I agree, the team is not doing its job properly. If we don't, then maybe no one has worked on the AI substantially since 2 years prior? I mean random NPCs that don't really do much besides add the illusion of other players doesn't really seem like a necessity at this stage what with everything else they still really need to get done.

Also, Bubuinix isn't acting like that RPM. You're one of the better frequent "Hard on SC" critics here, I'm a little disappointed in you for that last bit.

Look on the bright side, the game will probably never release and be in perpetual alpha etc. but in the meantime, think of all the fun forum stuff its generated over the years, thats been 'priceless'  ;)

Calling it "dumb Ai" is the real dumb thing lol

    Seems im talking with infants.

It's a game in development. In game dev as you introduce and improove features others break. Things are supposed to break. Then they are adjusted and adapted to not break, or to break the less possible or are removed entirely.

This is what happens behind doors in every single game in development.

It's part of the process, you cant develop a game without it.

This is like complaining that the chicken is undercooked before it goes into the hoven.

This AI has been added recently and it's still on the very first iteration, the AI priority is on the actual gameplay front, that is ship/dogfighting AI and FPS AI, this visual roaming NPCs will not take priority, things like the AI on missions with the escorts and such is where the attention is as that's where the AI functionality is core to gameplay.

That's what I figured, sometimes it sounds like people think all AI in the game is just something you can copy/paste the same code around to every NPC...

Yeah they almost always act like this. The wholly static ones tend to be ok but if there's any pathfinding involved it all goes to pot which is something that can be seen in all of their convention demos, they are very careful to avoid stepping infront of any of the NPCs when they're on the move.

I know what Babs is on about but the fact that he can't/won't even say "Yeah it does look kinda dumb" instead he needs to find some way to make excuses for it so I like messing with him.

Well they've been building these stations out and implementing NPCs to make them feel more lived in for quite some time now, on top of that there's been lots of talk on their weekly shows about NPCs, lots of reveals for NPCs etc. I seriously doubt that they don't have a team working on AI when they have 500 staff and are regularly talking about them in-game. The FPS AI was another god-awful reveal.

Let's not forget that this is CryEngine, it's not like they have to build everything from scratch.

The FPS has not made any reveal because all they've shown were early WIPs the same way when we've seen the first procedural planets we could even tell the triangle shapes on the terrain, I'd wait for the first implementation to see the bases  of it, a lot of stuff in the roadmap still mid-dev for it.

You talk about NPCs this and that, have you forgot about the mission givers? Is undoubtfully the best part of the currently implemented AI on NPCs and the amount of work and detail put in one of the mission givers, as well their mission-generation/giving functionality and early reputation system shouldn't be stripped of merit.

But that's kind of my point, it's 2 years since they showed NPCs walking around and Tuskan Raiders reacting to the player in the CitizenCon 2016 demo. I refuse to believe they have been doing nothing regarding AI since that time, especially considering how much they've talked about it.

The mission givers are good, for static NPCs, Miles sits on his ass wearing 8 different coats and sometimes you can find him curled up on the floor after a few too many whiskeys.

AI is computationally expensive.  The first versions out of the gate are going to be primitive, one way or another.  Too good immediately, and it would steal cycles from other game aspects. Oh well.  Will be fun to see whether they can shovel in expansive AI along with all the other stretch-feature creep goals.  Or whether the blissful followers will be talking the same line next year.

    Same as it ever was....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

I don't know how you being willingly obtusely ignorant is "messing with me", at most you are "messing" with whatever little "critic credibility" you could still have with some folks here :D

No, the npc's don't always act like specifically like that. Sure there's plenty of occasions where path-finding gets messed up after a patch, just like many other things break when new features are introduced, that's how development works.

Again, "funny" to warrant it's own thread lol?

alphas always offer a good laugh, but it's not fair to judge a game's overall quality based on alpha glitches/bugs. Having said that, I have not followed SC's progress at all so can't comment on the prospects of the game.

But that was a tech demo, showing off prototyping of they were working on, the AI there was no highlight it was still that same core as the AI 1 year later on the SQ42 demo.

And as of recent months, now we see concrete development reports on the actual development and implementation of FPS AI, that is what is happening now, not what was happening then. It's a confusing thing for who is more unaware of how devs tend to prototype a feature as a proof of concept first, then it's when they work to implement it, and many times the prototype code itself is not what is going to be the final solution that makes it to the game.

That is exactly why earlier this year is when the FPS AI started development towards implementation, even though we have seen footage with FPS AI it years ago.

Hey at least it’s kind of an improvement. In the citizencon demo when they got into that firefight the npc’s just stood there looking straight ahead and firing straight, never reacting to the person. At least now they walk in circles now and bump into walls
