Ok lets make this clear then, IT WAS MORE SUCCESSFUL THEN IT IS NOW BY FAR..
Hence the 45 people showing up at a Fan Fest vs the 500+ we had pre-NGE. "You know, the fans? Yeah.. us"...

Yea but with the star wars name this game has always under achieved. SWG rather you think it was the best game or not kept doing things since day one to pretty much push their players away. Because of the star wars name and it being the really only sand box game it was able to keep it's core, but the game alweays had the potential to have WOW numbers if they didn't keep pushing people away. The devs were able to justify their numbers and the fact they kept losing players over the last three years in chunks of tens of thousands due to poor decisions never bothered them because their over all numbers they felt were good. However, that was only because no one made them answer the question with the starwars name what should your numbers really be.
The game had been in life support for a long time before NEG or CU because the gaming base has never hit a streak of continued growth.

I don't disagree that it should have done much better. Might have helped if they didn't do a "soft launch" and has maybe one commercial about it at launch. If they acually worked to get the word out to non-mmo types. Fixed a bug.. added some content...
But they didn't. So it did "ok" for an MMO. Was doing "ok" until WoW came out and raised the bar. Now it is doing pathetic even by pre-wow standards.

Here's a post from what one my guildie's posted on my guild's forums. Best sums this up of what Brenlo said.
Brenlo said ... Where did we go wrong? Delivery, we failed in our timing and communication. That is where we let you down most, SWG faithful, and for that I truly apologize.
Hmmm.. why do I find this so funny?
If you order a Meat-Lovers' pizza, (as ATO members oh-so-often-do!) and you get a pizza of Goat Anus... does.. does saying it was "a delivery error" really "catch the gist" of the problem? A communication error? does that imply that they should have called you, to tell you they were sending Goat-Anus Pizza your way? instead of the meat-thing you ordered?
A timing issue? We know now, we shouldn't have tried to get you to eat this, while you were awake and alert.. we fully intend, to make all of our stupid-ass mistakes in the future, during holidays, when no one is paying attention.
"An army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of bullshit." General George S. Patton Jr.
So, I wanted to clarify that we did, here at SOE conceive and develop the NGE. We did so with the best of intentions, to try and make a better game.No blame or buck is being passed.
"Best intentions"... an interesting phrase... in itself it admits that their intentions were to do good, however this statement would not be applicable if the NGE was viewed as a success. If it's not a success, what is it?
No what he is doing is implying that the players are wrong for no likeing the game and that's where the failure is. He belives if they could of come up with a better way to fool the players the obviously superior NGE format would of been a big hit
Not to feed the troll.. but 300k pre-wow USED to be considered a success.
WoW is the exception to the rule. Not calling 300k a success now is like calling any movie that doesn't make $600 million, the amount Titantic made, a flop.

Should SWG have had more than 300k subs? Yes. However, I disagree that SWG could have had WoW numbers. Why? Look at sales of other Star Wars games. The best selling Star Wars game of 2005 was Battlefront II and it sold just over a million units, and it was the only SW game to sell over a million. The Star Wars IP doesn't automatically translate into million+ units sold.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
with wow, millions more people have accepted paying a montly fee for an online mmo, not to mention xbox live too.
since the money's there, why doesnt soe just get a much larger team to work on swg and upgrade the game in a positive manner?
it's not exactly rocket science here- if theres a bug, just fix it.
had swg just been able to accomplish that, it would have continued to build more and more POSTIVE hype, the way that wow did.
because devs failed to accomplish these simple things, the game lost it's steam.

instead of doing a crap ass combat upgrade, why not fix the simple and obvious problems that will make everyone who plays happier?
Combat upgrade = 90% people pissed off
bug that disconnects you fixed = 100% happy.
soe should be more farsighted- genuinely good games can do well in the current mmo market- just fix the easy obvious problems that make EVERYONE HAPPY.
then start working on combat upgrades ones that dont suck ass.
they couldnt fix the lag, or the servers, or the bugs---
it was the reason they screwed up the CU + NGE in the first place. they didnt know wtf they were doing.
baby steps.... just take baby steps.
--people who believe in abstinence are unsurprisingly also some of the ugliest most sexually undesired people in the world.--
I always wonder what would have happened if SWG was released after Wow with player cities, vehicles, jtl and the original cu. I bet it would have given Wow a run for the money.
okay, after reading pages and pages of this thing...here is my take as a player who played from launch, quit, then came back recently and played with the new system(just for a short time, to see what the game was like now)
are you ready for it? are you sure?
I don't dislike the NGE.
Now, maybe it is because I was a bounty hunter, so my profession remained more of less intact...and maybe it's because seeing jedi everywhere doesn't bother me. I can't really say for sure.
Why doesn't seeing a lot of jedi bother me? It's simple, it's a starwars game. Is it correct for the time period of the game and the star wars lore? absolutely not. Does being a jedi appeal to a great many people, including myself? Yes.
Was it a money grab to get people to think "whoa look I can be a jedi in SWG now without doing any work" 100% yes, but was it one that many people will actually find enjoyment from? yes.
Of course, this all comes at the cost of your veteran playerbase who want a true star wars experience(why have you been playing the game then? the game never felt like star wars anyway, it was a space world sim, nothing more)
The only thing that really and truly bothered me about the NGE was that the new combat system felt very clunky and unfinished, that and it seemed like the game was desperately trying to show you "look! it's a star wars game! see? it's han solo! OMG!!! Darth Vader is talking to me!!!" But in doing so ended up feeling very contrived.(this in addition to the real pictures of star wars characters on ALL of the profession screens)
So that's my take, from a launch veteran to a disgruntled former customer, back to a short term NGE player.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
Originally posted by LilT I always wonder what would have happened if SWG was released after Wow with player cities, vehicles, jtl and the original cu. I bet it would have given Wow a run for the money.
Pre-CU reached +- 300k....For a game that barely was marketed.
While the NGE, was marketed alot, tv adds, newspaper adds, magazine adds....And it's...not even close to the unmarketed game.
And lets not forget, that the game never was marketed to the Star Wars fans...No adds or anything was aimed at publications that Star Wars fans read or visit. With the NGE and butchering of Star Wars story, it's too late to even market it to the Star Wars fans, and they know it..wich is why there's no word about the game in any Star Wars publication.
It strikes me that there are some VERY low standards for success being expressed here.
Look at the customer bases of the early mmos. The market share was completely untapped and yet they scored such low customer bases.
The mmos themselves were not of high quality and they garnered a very small share of the possible market share.
Than look at Wow.Its comes along and blows them all out of the water customer base wise (except the asian mmos, which already were scoring customer bases way above the western mmos).
It seems like to me ,many of you are using how badly other mmos have done,to say "look at this mmo,it was a success becuase it wasnt quite as badly done as the others"
Thats kind of like going into an area in which you know theres a large amount of infectious deseases with four other people.Than saying your trip was a success becuase you only came back inflicted with 1 desease, while the others in your goupr all came back with 3 or more deseases.
They are simply NOT getting it right when it comes to MMO design. And they are getting worse rather than better. And its reflected in just how badly most mmos are doing.
Too many "visions" not enough common sense and hard work.

Yes, and SWG today has over 1 million registered users (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=6303). Notice how it says registered users? That means they've installed the game and registered it to play at some point. That doesn't mean there was 500k active subscribers at the time.
I guess I have a different take on what he said. But before I discuss it, here is the quote we are talking about:

First a request, to those of you using this thread as your personal battleground, please take it to PM's. So, I wanted to clarify that we did, here at SOE conceive and develop the NGE. We did so with the best of intentions, to try and make a better game. No blame or buck is being passed. We can, and I am sure many of us will, debate for years on end whether this was a good idea. Personally, I believe the concept of the NGE was sound. Some smart guys had some good ideas to make the game better, Jeff being one of them, and they went for it. A bold move and honestly, I am happy to be a part of a company that is not afraid to try something different. Where did we go wrong? Delivery, we failed in our timing and communication. That is where we let you down most, SWG faithful, and for that I truly apologize. Brenlo Bixiebopper Director, Global Community Relations - SOE --------------------------------------------- It's a rough life, but someone has to live it.
Well first off they have made customers mad enough that the brand loyalty they did have is now gone. It may never return I'm afraid and the only thing that may bring a few players back is a classic server.
In that third paragraph I think you see why SWG has never been what it could have been. How can anyone actually think there is a "debate" about weither or not the NGE was a good move? Is it not obvious? The game is a shell of what it once was. It has been 9 months and the results are obvious and they think there is some "debate"? The NGE was sound? Really? Then why does everyone hate it so much?
The problem is that $oE is just arrogant! The problem was communications? No, the problem was rather then fix the game, they screwed over all the people playing the game and switched it out with a completely different and even more broken game. No communication plan can fix that!
And frankly, his being "proud" to work for a company that would do something like that to thier customers tells me something about him, and it is not good!
If they wanted to release the NGE, they I don't have a problem with that, but they should have done it as a COMPLETELY NEW & DIFFERENT game, not completely change an existing game.
There is no debate here and the fact that $oE thinks there is one tells me they don't think they did anything wrong or stupid!
"but dos'nt registerd user mean they have registerd an are using. The link you have posted just claims they have sold a million units?"
All it means is that someone with a station account used a SWG key aka registered the game.
They didn't even have to ever login to the game.
Locally at Frys you can get the Access Collection for $14.99.
So you can then go and register I think its 5 games in there. Even if you never logged in and cacelled immediantly. All of the games in that pack would get a +1 to registered users.
There is also a big difference to how many people have played a game over a multiple year time frame. Compared to how many played it at any certain point in time. So you could have some point where a game peaked at 450,000 active uers (an example). Yet over a multi year period had over 1 million users.
That's just due to cancellations and new players/accounts etc

soe should be more farsighted- genuinely good games can do well in the current mmo market- just fix the easy obvious problems that make EVERYONE HAPPY.
then start working on combat upgrades ones that dont suck ass.
they couldnt fix the lag, or the servers, or the bugs---
it was the reason they screwed up the CU + NGE in the first place. they didnt know wtf they were doing.
baby steps.... just take baby steps.

For the Horde!
okay, after reading pages and pages of this thing...here is my take as a player who played from launch, quit, then came back recently and played with the new system(just for a short time, to see what the game was like now)
are you ready for it? are you sure?
I think so too,
SWG just had a bad bad start
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
The last of the Trackers
ROFL.... hows making *BLEEP* up working out for ya? Please, just stop lieing...

From the LA Website: June 28, 2004 - "Launched a year ago, Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided quickly became the fastest growing massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) in North America and today boasts over 500,000 registered users, with more than 115,000 players logging into the game every day."
ERRRRRRRRAAAAAA...... LIAR!!!! LOL!!!!
Yes, and SWG today has over 1 million registered users (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=6303). Notice how it says registered users? That means they've installed the game and registered it to play at some point. That doesn't mean there was 500k active subscribers at the time.
(holds up hand) dont mean to keep gettiong on your case obraik, you not a bad old sort reaaly
but dos'nt registerd user mean they have registerd an are using. The link you have posted just claims they have sold a million units?
I guess I have a different take on what he said. But before I discuss it, here is the quote we are talking about:
Concept for SWG 2
