where does it state you must inform the company you are doing a review?
If a company releases a game and charges for it and its in a poor state ,they can easily refuse to let anyone review it had they the right(which they don't).
I am sure DnL would have loved to have the right to stop reviews too!So are you saying all those reviewers who gave DnL a bad rating had an axe to grind?
That kills the freedom of the press!
Sorry but your thinking is totally flawed or 1950s russia.
They don't have to ask anyone for permission to express their views and i can't see what a major magazine has an axe to grind with a game run by a few people.

Unless you have prove this is total hogwash.
Dont be an ass Herc...I didnt say this was a rule, just the normal way things were done...freedom of the press has jack-all to do with it. It would be different if they went to RB and they said no...but they did it without even contacting RB...given the apperent vicious nature of the 'review' and the fact that they ambushed the Devloper with it...this has hachet job written all over it.

Why would a major magazine have an axe to grind with a small development company?
Please explain how they ambushed the developer unless the developer didn't realize they had released their own game and charged people $40 US for it?
This is not a national security issue, you don't ask someone if it's ok to review their game. I am actually interested in knowing who agreed to RedBedlam's request to hold off on their review, as that is showing favoritism and implies they are biased in favor of giving it a good review, hoping the game will improve.
Originally posted by sempiternal Its clear to see from the 'positive' quotes from that review, that it is a fairly worthless review, highly bias and unobjective. That is aside from the fact that the reviewer somehow missed the biggest problem with the game during release - the lag. Nobody that actually played the game missed the lag, but somehow the reviewer, who's job it is to actually review, completely failed to mention one of the game-stopping problems! Therefore, the review is not only not accurate, but unfair and bias. If you were reviewing a car and it broke down during the test drive, wouldn't that be something you mention? However, of note to those that have not tried RV yet, the lag has been largely reduced.
Its not a way of a biased review. your the one thats biased. your the one that fails to see that the game FAILED. it SUCKS. RV is the proof that a small company with a limited budget can NOT create a decent mmorpg.

The truth is no one really cares if they get to review this game or not. I asked 5 other guys if they were intrested in reviewing it because I have already formed an opinion of the game and none of them wanted to, and to be honest I don't feel like playing the game again. The only thing any of them have ever heard about RV is the crucificion. Sure I could write a review of RV, but to be honest, I don't feel like wasting the time on it, and I would probably be accused of being a "hater" because it would get a 2/10 from me.
No one is saying that reviewers have to contact a company whose product they're reviewing. But I'd say 90% of the time they do give the developers a heads up. The community knew about the review before we did.
If they had just come out of no where and reviewed it that'd be fine, but we had them on the list as waiting for a "press account" so they could review. I guess it's like going to one of two Ford dealerships in town and putting your name on a list for a car that's coming in, but then turning around and buying that car from the other dealership. Nothing wrong with it, completely in your right...just a little...shifty.

Actually you can just go back to the first dealership and get the car from the second dealership through them! That would be shifty to me, not going through the second one but I get your point Kanoth.

I'd just like to point out one thing. The account that we reviewed from was set up by the Communications Director of RedBedlam, so the company must have been aware that we were reviewing it. I fail to see anything 'shifty' about reviewing a game from an account that the game developers have set up for us to review from.

Then clearly you have nerver been involved with a review of any kind.

No one wants to respond to this? Anyone? Anyone? What about the person from RedBedlam who accused PC Zone of the "shifty" art of reviewing a commerically sold product?

Why bother, they aren't even established and credible. I would beleive RedBadlam over this person in a heartbeat. Her email address isn't even from the company she claims to be from.
If they wish to establish themselves to Craig and the staff here or via a post somehow then I will consider the post but until they are credible it isn't worth debating.

I was going to lay out how this could have easily happened, but Fad is right.

Maybe when RedBedlam's Roma Victor gets any other review, then you can use that argument.
Also Future Media (you know, the e-mail address "futurenet" from the poster that refuted RedBedLam's claims that they didn't know anything about the review) is the company that owns PC Zone. A quick search brought up the e-mail address linked with other PC Zone sources.
So, I'm still waiting for someone to refute the fact that they didn't know about the review. Especially from the RedBedlam employee. I just want him to confirm that he is right about that, and not, you know, lying. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I'm still waiting for an answer on why if this game is so awesome, the official website doesn't even announce that the game is live? That the status on the game's own web site still says it will be starting beta in may 2006.
I'm waiting for some sort of free trial so I can try this game myself. I cannot justify, and will not pay, $40 for a demo.
I'm still waiting for an answer on why there are no professional reviews of this game other than the discredited/undiscredited PC Zone review.
Can someone answer ANY of these three questions for me? Please?

These are all good questions. All of these things makes RedBedlam seem a bit "SHIFTY" in how it has gone about releasing this game. Pretty SHIFTY if you ask me. SHIFTY. SHIFTY. SHIFTY.
I would not expect a free trial anytime soon...as it would be hugely abuseable.
While they did make some noise with the whole crucifixion thingey in beta, RB dosent have a huge PR dept...I am guessing that most reviewers are like Roma Who?
I dont know what the deal is with the website...I do know I got the game at launch and have been playing regularly since, so the game is real
Oh, and as for theVF and his shiftyness...the thing that is really shifty is an account created today that is suddenly all over this thread
Jorev??? is that you?*
*(If anyone who takes this comment seriously, I will come to thier house and kick them in the nads)
All I can tell you is what NGW (our communications director) told us in an email, no press accounts have been given out. I'm pretty sure he'd of remembered, as would KFR as he would have had to set up the account.
I will double check however.
As far as the website, yes it's grossly out of date. And I've brought it up many times. We were suppose to launch a new website when the Pre-release hit. For whatever reason it's been put on the back burner.
The free trial is a hot topic on our boards, we're still looking for a good way to impliment it. Head over to the forums to give your ideas and see what others have posted.

I don't think I've acted improperly since coming here. I've simply asked some questions.
And, Hey! RedBedlam is a new-comer to the MMO genre - I guess that must make them shifty as well? You are trying to lessen the importance of my statements by claiming that I am a newcomer, and I do not appreciate your weak attempt at it.
Man people like to latch on to a word dont they? Perhaps "shifty" seems too harsh to some of you. I was struggling with what word to put there. I in no way meant to sound like I was calling PC Zone underhanded or "evil".

They have bigger fish to fry, something more gameplay orientated. Something like on getting Swimming Implemented.
