I bought a gamepad for this game, but I'm using it with other games too. I know I'm going to love this game and it's worth the money. I've played PSO on PC with a keyboard, and it just isn't the same as on a console with a controller.
Armor doesn't change your appearance, only what clothes you are wearing. You can buy more clothes and change your look from your room at any time. There won't be any pvp at release, but will probably come later.
I would suggest Phantasy Star Online or the sequel, Phantasy Star Universe. Although PSO has a battle mode for PvP. They're co-op games where you have to work together to reach the boss.
Phantasy Star Online and Universe have an action RPG combat system. Ofcourse PSU will probably just get delayed again and come out in 2008. I'm pretty sure PSO has a free trial for computer.
