They have also changed hardware and software so the servers can now handle more users at a "green" stage. Plus on weekend night all servers hit a yellow status, which I believe is several thousand users.

Yes you did download an update. It was just a patch though. Mainly it was to fix various issues that had been discovered. You can read about what you downloaded by reading the patch noted on the CoH/CoV website.
