Agricola1 - very nice post and this is how it works. In EVE skills are not showing Your REAL skill, understanding of game mechanics is more important than Your 30mln SP. You may kill 1000 NPCs and be lamer noob when in other games You will be PRO with Your "x"lvl. In EVE Your skillpoints only HELP You killing others, not killing them. And one important thing.... If You looking a MMO game - EVE isn't for You... If You looking a MMO game that reminds You Elite/Frontier/Privateer (and You where playing this games and thinking how would be nice when other players can play with me in the same time) with 20k other players You know You will stay.
Edit: Sorry for my english .o/ and cheers for those who play it and those who dont like it .o/
As for the popularity thing: I would say that a game that brings in $2,040,000 USD per month (170,000 * $12), is pretty popular.
Do you have any proof to back that claim up cause I doubt this game even has that many players?
Even if that were true WoW brings in over 5 million customers. This game is at the lowend of the spectrum.
If EVE is on the low end of the spectrum with 170,000 players then UO must be a n00b game. I think UO peaked at about 250,000. I know the max subscribers to SWG was 250,000 at it's peak. 170k isn't the low end of the spectrum. WoW with 5million is just at the very high end of the spectrum.
WoW's numbers shadow any other MMO ever created. You can't compare it's numbers with other MMOs. But, WoW is just a dumbed down game that requires no thought to play. It was created to be a game, nothimg more, nothing less... just a game that you pay $15/mo for. Where as most MMOs like L2, EVE, UO, SWG, etc are created to be virtual worlds and online communities.
I don't have a link to where it says 170,000 players. But, I'm sure someone can pull one up for you.
First off I have to say that EVE has been the best Beta I have ever paid for.
Secondly EVE by nature requires that its players have at least 2 accounts. However because you can buy timecards for in game ISK the power gamers have 3 to 4 accounts so the question is how many actual subscribers are there and how may of them are simply Alts. I believe that there are actually only about 9k-10k actually people playing.
I started playing at the official *Beta and continued from gold to present quitting for a few months between to try out other games.
Realistically there are only two play styles for you to enjoy EVE nether of them is PVP. If you want actual Player Vrs Player action then you better off playing SS or the new Battle Field or even hitting the BG in WOW.
The first play style is, well its like fishing. If you understand this statement Fishing is not about catching fish, its about the act of fishing then you will love EVE. Mining, MFG, Trading are like fishing or the same reason there are quilting bees or even poker night with the guys. Its about relaxing.
The second play style is, hmmm, well if you wondered where all the LVL 60 Barbies that used to come in to your LVL 12 D2 game and go hostel on you and the rest of the new players, well they all discovered EVE. The second play style is GVp (gang vrs player) or BVp (blob vrs player) as its called in EVE. I have seen these players in BS run Safe Spot and Log because 3 other players (in shuttles) suddenly showed up in local. So if you like PKing and I Win buttons but hate actual risk then EVE is for you. IE: If you agree with the PKers logic as shown here:[ Typical PKer logic ] then CCP welcomes you with open arms and has actually created the Prat welfare program just for you.
EVE is not for everybody but if you dont mind being the sheep and knowing that CCP is the Judas goat and determined to funnel you to the Prats then you will enjoy EVE.
*as opposed to the current form of EVE which is still a beta since most of the content promised at released still has not made it into game. Revelations (Kali) is simply adding some but not all of the content only 3 years late.
PS: I had 3 EVE accounts for the first year but dropped to 2 accounts until WOW came out and traded 1 EVE for my WOW account. It's great because I can play WOW while I am traveling or mining in EVE. I know,, the only reasion I still play EVE is to support my Clan. And sometimes it's nice to relax which is why my fishing skill is Maxed on WOW

Because SP are not significantly relevant past a certain point, and that point is a few months, at most.
The fact that you cant handle that doesnt mean anything about EVE, it means something about you. The fact that thousands and thousands of other people CAN handle it means something about EVE.

This was my impression of it exactly. I didn't care for the controls, though. Click-to-move is irritating. Joystick support would improve EVE by leaps and bounds. I found the standard MMO sandwich combat (click on target, the game does everything for you while you fire off specials here and there) in SWG or WoW is preferable to the combat in EVE. You don't even have the option to add ingredients (ie - fire off specials from your toolbar). If the gameplay were more twitch - like some of the PC & console games out there (TIE Fighter, X-Wing, etc) - EVE would be considerably more enjoyable for the average MMO gamer.
I love the relaxing "fishing" elements of games. It's almost as good as fishing in real life, but it's a lot less work. :P Unfortunately, the "fishing" in EVE didn't balance out the dull combat, the GvPers, and the click-to-move controls.
To me it was an all right game, just don't see why it is number one, just doesn't deserve to be. It seemed that the only thing I did was delivery missions and just waiting for hours going from jump gate to jump gate. You'd think that most gamers these days are out of the space genre of games and more into fantasy.

One question comes to mind when I read your post: Why did you do nothing but courier missions if you didn't like them? That seems pretty dumb to me.
There are other missions besides courier and you don't have to mission at all. I've never made it to level 2 missions and I do quite well.
Well I only did what the tutorial told me to next, I had never played the game, had no way of knowing how to get around on my own so I had no way of even knowing how to get other missions.
Level cap or not other MMOs still give you the chance to compete. Like I've said 100 times the Skill system in this game is flawed beyond belief because it requires realtime to advance.
It is impossible to catch up. Impossible. While other games, even without a skill cap, you have the chance to play and play until you're caught up while other players are most likely on alts or playing less.
I'm not meaning to completely crap all over the game. It was alright, but it doesn't deserve the #1 spot at all. Space genres are generally unpopular anyways ontop of the fact hardly anyone even plays this game. My only guess as to why it got #1 is that one of the site's operators boosted it up cause he had the game from release and/or nobody bothered reviewing the game other than hardcore Eve players that've been crushing newbs with 10 million more SPs.
I lied this game just sucks and I'm crapping on it.

Why do you keep saying that? I'm beginning to think you're nothing but a troll.
You said you played UO right? Well UO didn't have many more players than EVE has. I guess nobody played UO either. :-/ While we're at it, SWG's numbers topped out at about the same as UO. So, I guess nobody ever played that game either.
And I guess AC never existed. Because it's numbers never even touched EVE's.

And how would that measure relate to EVE.
YOu can say skillpoints if you wish, but I've already rebuted that charge if your suggestions forum thread.
But I think if you give me good info here I think I can help increase your understanding of the game.

Dude, I reported him for trolling and hopefully they do something about it. That's all he's doing. He keeps saying that "not many ppl play" because he's fishing. Which, is why this thread has so many damn replies.
Making this thread in this forum, was completely pointless. He made one almost exactly like it in the WoW forums. He's a troll, pure and simple.

Snakey, you keep making outrageous claims without having any proof or fact to back them up. UO had thousands of players on multiple servers. This game has 1 server with 15k on most the time or less.
That page gives nothing but a few corporations or whatever. Doesn't say anywhere how many members and even if I felt like going through I doubt I'd find anything on their resembling anymore than 30k players. And that's pushing it.

Awwe, getting me banned is probably your best bet since you realize I'm telling it like it is and there's nothing you can say to disprove this. Ultimately you've just admitted I'm right and getting me banned is your last resort in trying to pull some more newbs into this horrible game. I don't need to fish. I don't think this game is crap just because it has a low population. I think it has a low population because it's crap.
Sorry my thread brought some truth to you and fellow MMORPGers.
Looks like I got some Eve "elitists" upset. lol Feels great.
You can't get me banned for expressing an opinion. Go ahead and try tho. Lot of people in this thread actually agreed with what I'm saying anyways.

look demon, you dont know what you are saying. do you really believe that if you start playing WoW right now, and WoW didnt have a crappy and pointless level cap, you'd be able to compete? do you think you could out-play thousands of teenagers with no life that play 10 hours everyday? and that is knowing they can not get past 60. if WoW had no level cap, i am sure that players would play much more. and you think you could compete... yeah right. NOBODY, i repeat, NOBODY, could compete with 2 year old players, and that is how it is always with level based games. a level 89 fighter, can not even touch a level 90 rogue. and that is bad design, bad gameplay.
but anyway, it seems that you just dont care about EVE, you just enjoy getting people pissed. i am sorry for you. there are far more entertaining things to do than come here to make yourself look like a child

You have no clue what you are talking about. In level capped MMOs you still only have a minimal chance to compete in PvP or PvE with few exceptions. You want examples? For PvE, look at EQ, start at level 1 today and you will have trouble getting to the same equipment and AA level as someone who has a character that has been around from the beginning. You just won't ever be able to advance fast enough to catch up to the rate at which SOE releases new gear and levels / skills. It could be done, if you were able to get literally a whole guild to assist you in backflagging for months on end, but that just does not happen. Then with DKP, zone lockouts, other guilds competing for the same spawns, etc, you'd have to be lucky beyond Lottery odds to catch up, and then of course there are the AA's. For PvP, look at DAOC, start at level 1 today and you will likely never catch someone who has been around since launch and continuously RvR'd. Even if your toon were played 24 hours a day, there just would not be enough RvR happening to be able to catch up in a reasonable (read less than a year or 2) amount of time. Some might say "impossible."
EVE is no different. No, you will never have as many SPs as someone who has been around since launch, but you might be able to get into a circumstance where you have a better skillset and fitting than a vet. Example? A vet has 30 million SPs, but you meet him in space while he is in a AF or BC. With less than 3 months in game you can compete in your own AF or BC and with 6 months in game you can have nearly every skill related to an AF and BC at the same level that 30 million SP vet has.
In the end, most of the games are the same, with a few exceptions. Newbs don't catch up to dedicated vets and rightly so. Unfortunately, or fortunately, EVE is hard for some people to grasp or just isn't their style. So be it. You didn't like EVE. Big deal. Don't come here with your "EVE sucks because I can never catch up" attitude, because it just shows you didn't put forth the effort to learn how to play the game well. If you didn't like it, come in, say you didn't like it, and leave.
And every skill has just its five levels. So a 30 mil Vet might have some more diverstiy and more 5 % here damage, 5 % here more Cap Reload, 2 % more shield recharge, but if you can them to lvl 4 and you have a some unusal fitting you can grab his ass.
What people say about point'n'click and no manouvering.... its bullshit either. I SAW people outmanovering other by intelligent using of p'n'c because of lighter ship mass even with less speed, but thats really stuff that needs your own skill. So if oyu want to keep your transversal speed high, to not be hit, you have to use your own skill, and mastering this needs a lot of personal experience.
SP is something you need, ISK too, but what you crucial need is personal experience, skill, imagination and a lot of crazy ideas to compete well.

Well given the fact that I personally know 3 Economists that play EVE and more than a handful of bankers/accountants, I don't see where it would be a bad thing.
I came up with my ingame name Redart as a backwards way of writing Trader. Because, before EVE I pwnd ingame economies. I could play the markets and make more money doing hardly anything that I ever could killing millions of mobs or doing missions. Take WoW for instance, I quit WoW with after about 3 weeks at lvl 35 with about 5000g (if you haven't played, that's an ASSLOAD of money). Then I started playing EVE, in EVE I am nothing. I still do fairly well, but in EVE I am competing with hundreds if not thousands of other people who are doing the same thing and the majority of people who do what I do, are much better than me because they have have degrees that revolve around it and do it for a living with real world money, or are just really really good at it.
Disclaimer: If you don't belive me about the WoW thing and you play. Go ahead and try it. One of my main sources of income was bronze ingots. Go harvest yourself about 10 stacks of bronze ingots, go to the AH, buy out every single stack of bronze ingots that sell for less than 90s. Now, upload your ingots and what else you can fit in the AH at a price of 1g to 1g 50s. Within 24hrs, every single one of your stacks will be sold to lvl 60s with too much money who want to increase their Eng/Weap/Armor making skills.

Doesn't take into account the amount of people with 2 or more accounts. That page didn't prove crap to me. Find me a page that has some stats on people currently playing the game if you can find it and you'll win me over. 150k is crap in the MMO world even if that's true. I'm willing to bet that mark he used were people that subscribed at one point and then canceled.
I learned enough about the game to know it wasn't for me. How's that?

So Wow having "about" 5 million subscribers means nothing to you too..? What about the dual accounters of Wow, or the dual accounters of every other MMO out there....
Deamonknight you are a prat and deserve to be perma banned from this sight - you have no argument when every form of evidence placed before you, is dismissed because you do not agree with it, or it is not "good enough" for you. There use to be a god forsaken site that described the amount of true subscribers to an mmo (single accounts, not character number) and at the last check it was at 150k for Eve, that site was used for marketing purposes by the mmo companies themselves. Now if your theory works, there are still around 75k players, with a "maximum" of 15 k players on at one time...
Please -
WHERE ELSE IN THE GODFORSAKEN WORLD ARE YOU GOING TO BE ABLE TO FIND THAT MANY PEOPLE ON ONE GAME IN THE ONE WORLD AT THE SAME TIME...?
- You just plainly won't. Darkknight, learn to understand reality here, learn to use the same statistics everyone else does, do not fabricate your own proof to support your argument. It's like writing a history paper, if it didn't happen, you cannot talk about it. Every thing you say relies on your own words to be the utter truth... problem is only maybe 2 things you have said are true.. 1) a new player will never catch a vet with SP number 2) point and click is not the best form of game control.
Problem is 1 your flying a ship atleast the size of a Naval Frigate (as in the sea, as in 40+ metres) You try controlling something that large with a joystick - it is impossible... 2) your in space and well unless your in the avergae sized jet, your not going to be able to do much more then fly in straight lines... I'd wite more but I see no point in putting much more effort into this topis, which by all chance should have been locked atleast 30 posts ago.
"Just because there are other colours to use in chat does not mean you have to use them..." - Please follow
Honestly to be able to Pilot a Gallente Titan, you have to have played the game at least ~760 days, which equates to about 2.5 years.
And that is training only Spaceship Command Skills constantly and non stop. So as soon as one skill is doe you immediatly have to start the next in order to achive Titan in that amount of time. And honestly your not going to train only Spaceship command for two years there are other skills in the game you need above spaceship command to function properly.
I've been playing for about 2 weeks, and I've been playing almost the entire time. Taking time to sleep and eat and what not but I've been paying as much as I possibly can and the game does get a little boring because you have to sit around wait for your skills so much. You just kind of get bored like you do in real life you know. You can't just sit around and mine all day or go kill NPC's just to pass time. This game makes you wait plain and simple.

His pre-2006 numbers are fairly correct

An so it begins
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.[/CENTER]
One question comes to mind when I read your post:
Why did you do nothing but courier missions if you didn't like them? That seems pretty dumb to me.
There are other missions besides courier and you don't have to mission at all. I've never made it to level 2 missions and I do quite well.

I lied this game just sucks and I'm crapping on it.
thanks.
Why do you keep saying that? I'm beginning to think you're nothing but a troll.
You said you played UO right? Well UO didn't have many more players than EVE has. I guess nobody played UO either. :-/
While we're at it, SWG's numbers topped out at about the same as UO. So, I guess nobody ever played that game either.
And I guess AC never existed. Because it's numbers never even touched EVE's.
There are over 75,000 ALLIED players alone. http://www.eve-online.com/alliances/

Tell me Demonknight, by what measure do you put success to in an MMO.
And how would that measure relate to EVE.
YOu can say skillpoints if you wish, but I've already rebuted that charge if your suggestions forum thread.
But I think if you give me good info here I think I can help increase your understanding of the game.
While your at it, also tell me how EVE works against your measure of success.

Agree, lock this thread and make that kiddo troll banned.. Its annoying to see threads from him.. worse than crazy frog it is.
All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.

Lot of people in this thread actually agreed with what I'm saying anyways.
thanks tho
look demon, you dont know what you are saying. do you really believe that if you start playing WoW right now, and WoW didnt have a crappy and pointless level cap, you'd be able to compete? do you think you could out-play thousands of teenagers with no life that play 10 hours everyday? and that is knowing they can not get past 60. if WoW had no level cap, i am sure that players would play much more. and you think you could compete...
So a 30 mil Vet might have some more diverstiy and more 5 % here damage, 5 % here more Cap Reload,
2 % more shield recharge, but if you can them to lvl 4 and you have a some unusal fitting you can grab his ass.
What people say about point'n'click and no manouvering.... its bullshit either.
I SAW people outmanovering other by intelligent using of p'n'c because of lighter ship mass even with less speed,
but thats really stuff that needs your own skill.
So if oyu want to keep your transversal speed high, to not be hit, you have to use your own skill,
and mastering this needs a lot of personal experience.
SP is something you need, ISK too, but what you crucial need is personal experience, skill, imagination and a lot of crazy ideas to compete well.
fact to back them up. UO had thousands of players on multiple

that's first time I've read that. I saw it once but was too busy.
"But the escrow itself is controlled by the game code?
Magnús: Yes. But I imagine that for example big enough alliances, say three to four thousand people, could have their own insurance companies, complete with insurance inspectors to detect attempted frauds."
Haha, I was in on the discussion in the Forums about that. I didn't start the thread, but I was the one who figured out how to make it work with big alliances. I don't know if they will be using my ideas or not. That would be really cool if they did.

Sort of shows that eve is going to get very intereesting with players playing accountants lol
Disclaimer:
If you don't belive me about the WoW thing and you play.

The counter never went over 20k. How could I possibly miss that? Ya, you know it's official when the guy being interviewed is just takin a shot in the dark and saying "about" 150k.
