I feel sorry for non vanguard players...

If you aren't part of the Vanguard community, you are seriously missing out.  Not only is it the best MMO out right now, but  the best MMO we have seen in a long time.  Seriously, what is out now?  WoW is a cartoon on a computer, and EQ, UO, and DAoC are just not the same anymore.  What coming out soon?  AoC looks ok, but the whole no targeting thing is very risky and the theme of the game looks like it only appeals to a certain niche.  Warhammer is a WoW clone, plain and simple.  Plenty of people on this forum take pride in how many aspects of VG they can point out that take away from the game, but is that really the way to look at things?  I'll run through some cons first just for all you bandwagon haters.

Cons:

  • Performance - While the game is unoptimized, and bugs appear here and there, I see nothing wrong with the 40-50 constant fps I get with my 7900GTX 512mb card.  This is a 'next gen' game and I am sorry if your hardware is not up to par with  'next gen' gaming.  Bashing Vanguard because your video card sucks is almost as stupid as the guy who was bashing it because his download was taking too long. Not to mention, up until recently (with the whole Sigil giving it to SOE deal), patches were being issued every Wednesday, without fail.  True, we STILL dont have helmet graphics, but if you play MMO's for helmet graphics then dont play this game.
  • Population - Many have also complained of low server population.  There is no denying this.  This can be mostly attributed to the terrible rep VG has been given (half given, half earned).  It was a rough start, and many people were quick to yell "FAILURE!!! ITS A FAILURE OMG!!!".  Brad made a big mistake breaking promises from the start, but it was hardly his fault anyways.  Blame SOE if anyone.  With all the trolls out there who seem to have more fun hating the game than playing it, VG is having a rough time gaining subscriptions and keeping them as well.  As soon as people start realizing that most of these haters are just followers with no opinions of their own, population will increase.
Pros:

  •  Graphics - Simply amazing.  No other MMO can even try to claim they have better.  While many of the graphics are not completed, what is in game is finely detailed.  From character models to landscapes, this game has it all.  Effects like Atmospheric Distortion create an environment that really stands out.  This can be trouble for some people who do not have the power to handle graphics like these, but like I said, upgrade or miss out.
  • Something for Everyone - It is almost guaranteed that you will find a role to play in the world of Telon.  If you like adventuring, like most, the variety of race/class combinations are sure to satisfy you.  With 15 classes in game, you are sure to find a fighting style to fit your preference.  If combat is not in your nature, choose crafting or diplomacy.  Both of these gain you wealth and partnerships as you gain levels.  Server play-style is also fantastic in this game.  They made sure to create a world for everyone.  While most of the servers are PvE, they also include Team PvP, and FFA PvP as well.  These rules do not lie.  PvE is strictly that, and FFA PvP is also what it claims to be -- FFA.  Kill anyone, anywhere, anytime.  I think many MMO's have failed to provide a decent no-safe-zone environment in the past, and if they did they were probably Korean grind - all - day games.  The variety doesnt stop there.  There are three different continents to choose from, also with their own housing and boat building styles.  Oh yeah...did I mention there is boating and housing?  Add that to the list.  Also, there are already many UI mods to apply, to create an interface that maximizes your abilities for your class.  As you can see, this game could be played many different ways, you just have to find the one that fits you.
  • Community - This is probably the thing that makes me love VG as much as I do.  The people who play the game are great.  If you are a WoW player, and are sick of wiping due to 10 yr old noobs who dont know anything about aggro control, VG may be a good switch for you.  The community is full of adult level players, most of which who have played one or more MMO's in the past.  I meet very few who are not serious about the game, and the kids who cant survive due to lack of skills dont last very long (and probably make up most of the trolls on this board ).  A lot of people call this MMO "hardcore", because you cannot get on for 2 hours a day after elementary school and make much progress.   If you consider yourself a "hardcore" player, with time to dedicate, this game truly gives back for the time you put in.
And so, for all of you people who say "I will never think of giving this game a chance because [insert troll name here] says it sucks LOL!!!11!" ;  think again.  I would hate to see this game go down, when it, even at this stage of the game, has SO much potential.  Personally, I am loving every second of this game, and I await every patch with anticipation. Sorry for the novel, but im pretty bored at work and I think this board really needed a post to let the unaware know whats up instead of letting the trolls take over.  To all you current VG players: Stick with it guys!  I know its hard when everyone out here is flaming us, but remember the reason you play MMO's in the first place!

I have thought of giving VoSH a second try and then I run across a post like this.

It's not the game that keeps me from playing, it's the arrogant and better than thou attitude of the community.

    LOL

This OP just made my day. You create a name like "iluvVG" and make a Vanguard apologetic post in the midst of a time when anyone with half a brain knows that VG is a disaster of an MMO, regardless of whether or not you like the game.

If the OP is serious, then that just makes it better, but I suspect otherwise.

But just so we're clear, the Cons "Population" and "Performance" make your Pros irrelevant. Who wants to play an MMO with terrible performance and a low population?

I also love the Blame SOE comment. Yeah, blame people who had nothing to do with the game's development, but only published the game.

What you forgot to add, is that the game is a true sandbox experience. You will find that when give the choice of either LOTRO or Vanguard, most people will choose LOTRO. This is because that game is very similar to WoW, you're placed on a set of tracks with very limited options of where to take your character. This is not necessarily a bad thing, I'm currently playing LOTRO and WoW, not Vanguard. I do enjoy a good sandbox game, sadly Vanguard is not that game for me.

Having posted this, I have to add that I played Vanguard upon release, and quit after my free month due to all the bugs, lack of a feel of accomplishment and the lack of any real enjoyment.

You let your own personal opinion and decision making process be influenced by a single post, of a single opinion on a single board?  That alone shapes your view of the Vanguard community?

The only way to get a feel for the VG community is to play for awhile... in-game.

VG is not a bad game, I played beta and a couple of months after launch.

But then I got bored of the repetitive grinding, ( this goes for many MMO's)

But wtf do they mean with next generation MMO??

I see no such thing. Boats and housing?

    Even UO had both.

Graphics and effects doesnt make "next generation"

The obnoxious craft system doesnt make it next gen either.

Am I missing out on something? VG is my parents generation.

I like that you put performance under the Cons. It was not only a con for me it was the destruction of the game for me. I purchased a geforce 8800 gts 640mb graphics card to get still crappy performance. I turn everything off i get a rough 50-60 fps average but when i turn around or turn quickly my fps seem to love to drop to 10fps. with everything on good 40-60 fps average and when i turn 1 - 5fps. Now yes vanguard had promise for me but when turning around or turning fast makes my fps drop so drasticly i had to quit. It was frustrating and annoying that i have the hardware to play this game but yet it didnt live up to the playabilty i need from a game. That alone made me bash Vanguard and yes it might be fixed now or will be within the next few months but at release if your game isnt playable with all the graphics turned off without low fps spikes your game isnt ready. That was the problem with the game and that is why everyone bashed it still bashes it and doesnt want to give it a try. We were suckered in and we were fooled. People dont like to be fooled and want to play what they pay for. especially when your going to charge 15 dollars a month. Bugs are a part of new games yes but when i cant run around and enjoy 40-60fps when no one is around (since when people are around u lag) i will get annoyed and let the game collect dust like it deserves.

I'm certainly going to give this game another try :), but that will probably be next summer when the game is hopefully more "finished" when I played this game at release it felt a bit too "unfinished" to my taste. However I felt like I really had to give it a second try after some time.

I also love the Blame SOE comment. Yeah, blame people who had nothing to do with the game's development, but only published the game.

You are right.  You would have to have half a brain to think that the game is a disaster.

The population isn't as low as you would think.  Lot's of people playing, just playing really far away.  World is to big for the pop at the moment; so it feels like there's no one there.

SoE devs were working on the game; so they were doing a little more then just publishing.

I don't think the game's a disaster and I like it.  Does that me I have less then half a brain or more then half?

    Wish Darkfall would release.

    Pros:

Graphics - Simply amazing.

Something for Everyone - It is almost guaranteed that you will find a role to play in the world of Telon.

Community - This is probably the thing that makes me love VG as much as I do.

If you like this game try out Ryzom! The community in Ryzom is one of the most friendly and mature of any MMO I have played! The average age of the players of Ryzom is 22-25.I would try out Vanguard but from everything I've read that is has, Ryzom has  too with the exception of Diplomacy. From what I've read we aren't missing much either. How is Vanguard a next Gen game exactly? From what I've read, including interviews with Brad, it just sounds like they waaaaaay over shot system specs. for the PCs out today and hoped that they would catch up by release. And if the game is that good why did Sigil go under in less than three months after release?

I welcome the change.  I still can't figure out why with today's technology comapnies refuse to take this obvious step.  "target and button mash" combat is boring and un-innovative to say the least.   To say that freestyle combat would create a high latency is a lame excuse that also claims companies are only taking the easy way out.  Last "target and button mash" game I played (with exception to an MMORPG) was 2D....

AoC isn't the only MMO coming out this year to finally make such a step in game mechanics though.  After 2007 it will practically become a standard it seems.
