Ok damn - there are so many moaning plonkers on this thread.

At the end of the day "Try it before you buy it"

If you dont like it, give an opinion not a statement.

If you do like it sweet, still give an opnion and comprimise.

If niether of the above fit what you want to say - why write and annoy people, yes you may be annoyed yourself but you should never say something that you wouldnt like said to yourself.

I personnally like the game - in bits, i think has a few good things and a few bad things. Most of all for me its a great change from WoW - played it too long 2yrs - 5 months.... £8 per month - ouch.

    R3PooC out

(that's what I love (sarcasm) about the MMORPG forums... so many people talk out their a*$es. People quote incorrect 'facts' and put their opinions out there as facts. It's sad.)

Good post, well thought out and informative.  You addressed the different aspects of the game, laid out the pros and cons of each, in a neutral and unbiased way.

for all those people out there who are reading this and considering getting the game the ONLY way u will find out if you like it is to play it.

Skim read....but... melodrama aside *holds hand to forhead and gasps*...  and whatever the sexual name calling was or something some such reference but mod deleted...

Yeah kind of spot on. MMORPG's are very cliche a lot of the time and Turbine didnt go out there way to make this game NOT like WoW. IT held my interest. The grass swayed nicely in the wind and I left.

    Otherwise...

Nothing inherantly bad about the game just nothing greatly amazing and the classes grated on me..

All Diku ( level based) are the same when you boil em down to the basics. They will have minor differences such as art style, degree of grind between levels, amount of quests etc. But the basic formula is the same since the text mud days.

    I miss DAoC

Notice how often he starts out with a positive for the game, then finds a way to turn it into a negative.

There is also a lot of flawed, but often repeated, criticism, which is a trademark of commentary by someone pretending to have a lot more first hand experience with the game than they actually do.

No game is for everyone and I'm sure a number of people will find this game not to be their thing, but these intellectually dishonest critiques are worthless for people considering the game.

Well almost every fantasy MMO is going to have similarities. If you want something new then you better play singleplayer games (some of them) or even better start playing football for real, or maybe go fish.

    Troll alert...again!

Man, WoW is EQ2 with different graphics and story and still you like it? Kinda weird don't you think?

Also, LotrO at least has a decent story fitting within LotR

All game reviews are purely the opinion of the reviewer - that's a well known fact.

Where this "review" fails in being an actual review is in the utter lack of  knowledge of the game and it's mechanics.  This is blatantly obvious when the OP says Monster Play is unbalanced due to poor design, that monsters being weaker than players is due to a lack of inspiration and faulty programming/design.  Anyone who actually knows anything of the game, or has bothered to do even a modicum of research into it, would know that was done purposefully!  Turbine did not make LOTRO to go against the grain of the novels, to let players make uber "evil" monster characters that can utterly destroy any "good guy" player characters with reckless abandon.  If the OP went into MP expecting to be on even ground with a PC of equal level, or even more powerful than one, then he obviously did not bother to get to know the design for the system before hand.

Turbine stated quite regularily that in MP any monster character vs. a player character in 1v1 will lose - that was done intentionally.  Player characters are designed to be the "heroes" of the game.  The highest a monster character can get is equal to a "signature" mob in the regular gameplay.  They purposefully made it so it would take more monster characters to take out a single player character, and again I'll reiterate that anyone going into MP not knowing this and/or using it as an example of "poor design/gameplay" obviously did not bother to look into how the system was designed to work.

Yup thats really true. Though from Turbine I was not expecting much and for many MMO players they just  wanted the same. Anything really new often gets attacked viciously anyhow. The irony is LOTRO doesnt do it as well as WoW, copies are seldom as good. In the end this is about companies mentality and wanting more money. They wil produce endless clones until they become so obvious no one touches them.

Personally I dont like WoW and think that ardent WoW players will always graviate back to  WoW. I'd like to see more orginality which is why I left LOTRO pretty earlier on. The exact reason was the stupid pointless quests go kill X of this... then kill X .. boring!

Graphics are good and scalable though.. which for me makesa the gameplay even more criminal. Maybe Turbine will do something else with the engine. They like all their fingers in al the pies like SOE.

I guess i'm used to seeing hateposts here, but i'm still gonna add my opinion.

You moaned about how bad the community were, how bad people played and how healers hate their class, well bud, i think you should try rolling an alt at an RP server, i did that and got good results.

You also criticized the quests of the game, and while the starter area quests might be a bore most quests in this game got a storyline which actually interested me, sure there are the boar quests ugh... but they're really not in the majority.

I will have to agree somewhat with you on the deed system, not because you're allowed to set only a few but because of the immense grinding involved, "Hello, what have we got here, get a fancy title for slaying only 300 goblins and ooh, i get an useful (maybe) trait for slaying double that, this will only take me a week" yeah, that kind, personally, i just ended up not doing my deeds because of the intense borefest it became.

I can't really comment on the Monster Play or raiding part since i didn't take part of it.

All in all, this is my two cent.

LOTR is the best mmo out there right now. Don't listen to the 14 year olds who think the only way to have a good mmo is to have cartton graphics and the need to play 14 hours a day in order to get elite gear. I like WOW, I just hate it's community...bunch of rugrats.

I got my Champion up to 46. I've been in a couple kins, but what I found is if you aren't in a group or a kin from 40-50 , you really don't level at all. The game got to be a major bore with me after playing WOW for 3 1/2 years. Something is missing in LOTRO, not sure what it is...but it almost felt like I was playing a single player game.

  • TorakTorak Member Posts: 4,905

Why do you guys necro crap like this?

The OP obviously never played a "terrible" MMO and probably has little experience with the genre, he should go drop some cash on Vanguard, Roma Victor or Dark & Light or any of the over dozen wonder MMOs released in the past 3 years... then come back and b*tch.

    edit

Did anyone look at the OPs post history? He pretty much has nothing else to do with his time but hate and troll this game

No it is not the "best".

It might be the best for the really casual mmo player. But for the rest of us it is about #6 on the list.

QFT. I'd imagine it doesn't even crack the top ten for well over half the people who've played it. if it did, they'd still be there and not back in EQ2 or Runescape or WoW. It's not even the best Turbine has- Asheron's Call is about to start getting Social Security checks, and as bad as it is, it's still stands head and shoulders about this shallow, Ronald McDonald meets the Teletubbies POS.
