Most of us disagree, yet you are still clinging to your idea.
If someone pretended to be a girl, and played you for the fool you are then learn your lesson. Don't flirt with MMO toons. Its stupid, childish, perverted, and flat out hilarious to see/hear about.
wow any guild that makes you have a Vent interview friggin needs to get lives. How sad. Its A VIDEO GAME! lol!! Who the hell cares what they sound like?!?
I won't join any guild that requires any sort of interview.
When I was the recruiter for a guild in WoW I had a couple simple questions I would ask before someone joined.
Do you want to raid?
When can you raid?
If they said they didn't want to raid, or that they couldn't raid often they would still get in the guild, they just didn't raid.
Having interviews in a game is silly. What can a person possibly tell you in a few minutes that will let you know if they know how to play a game.
I am member of hardcore roleplay guild (kinship) in LOTRO Any talk about real name, job, age, sex, nationality or anything else is frowned upon.It really breaks the immersion. I dont want to know who and what are you in RL , i want to know who you are in game. This is why we never use voice chat.
But this is the case for RP guild. I could see it being useful in pvp guild
Ok I guess using voice for rping would be bad, and if you're a serious rper then it could ruin your immersion or w/e.
I think hardly any roleplays anymore or at least ALL the time.
Id suggest to a roleplaying guild they could use voice once in a while,it could be like an OOC guild channel to help with raids.
I roleplay. always have. always will. Then again, I don't use terms like "gank" "noob" or any of that other childish verbage.
Back when I played MMORPGs (Asheron's Call) there were no voice programs (or bots/add-ons/macros, those came later in AC) and we did just fine. I don't need a voice program for a raid or quest as that was never a problem before and I refuse to use one. If a guild requires one, I don't join and find a guild that doesn't require one. I don't care if you think its required for a raid, because it isn't...heck I even tried EQ and me and my guild raided without vent/ts back before they were invented and we did just fine...just required more SKILL.
Roger Wilco was the first badboy of voice comm programs. I used it back in the late 90's for quake and Duke Nukem 3D. We even used it in Ultima a bit as well as Everquest. There were voice programs back then, you just chose not to use them. These days, I prefer to stay in character in game. It prevents personality conflicts.
The main reason i want to know your gender is just cause youre a guild member id like to feel comfortable with you in my guild.
And mostly ,cause i have gayphobia,
But now you know the truth.
I dont really care if youre a guy or girl.
I just dont want a pretend girl thats really some gay man.
Go ahead and flame. You mostly all know its true.Im just the rare guy that admits it.
It's a big reason for the interview. Gayphobia is a real problem for me.
Im working on dealing with my problem.
A vent interview isn't as absurd as all that if dealt with with the right maturity. But, the reasons you're doing it is wrong. You're using it to filter out those who play female characters who are male, yet they could be good additions to your guild. And it isn't 'gay men' who play female characters -afterall, what did you play in Tomb Raider? Did you play some extra addition male character?
In terms of wanting to know whether the person behind the keyboard is male or female, I think you have to accept that those people will only tell you if they want to tell you. The same goes for stuff like age.
The folks that complain about males playin females and females playin males are the ones that make a nightelf female in Wow and stand on the banker nakid for 7hrs.
The folks that complain about farming are the gnomes in Wow that loot the chest while your clearing the camp.
The guilds that have lengthy interviews and high reqs to join are the ones that have the 5 founders and 2 officers with all the gear.
The pvpers that are stuck on vent are the ones that camp respawn points like hyenas on a week old carcass.
The ppl that shop at walmart are generally + size. (Just count the ratio one day)
So why don't u jus skip the vent interview and do a background check.
I want to know who is really a guy or a girl and who is faking being a girl. ...snip
Sounds as though the OP is precisely the type of player I'm looking to avoid as a RL girl. I'm here to raid and play a game, not eHarmony.com as someone else aptly pointed out.
You should avoid me,cause all i would do is hit on you and flirt with you non stop until you had a crush on me.
Cause thats what vent is for....

What about the straight guys that play female characters? Do those scare you too? What about gay people who play characters of the same gender? What about women who play male characters? Do those scare you? If a gay man plays a male character, does that make him straight?
The imaginary gender of your pixels has no relation to your real-world sxuality, and many (I'd even go so far as to say most) people are comfortable playing a character of either gender (or any of several genders, or multiple genders at once, or completely ungendered - these are fantasy races, after all).
Stop being so afraid of your inner gayness. Stop fighting it and embrace it. Give in to your desires and have a little gay sex. It won't make you gay - if you're still into women, you'll be bisexual. And being bisexual means you get to have sex with everybody! You get twice as much action!

Well, it seems that the vast majority of people, at least those who responded to this thread, think a voice interview for a guild is silly, regardless of whether or not they use voice chat in games. I use Vent/TS in games but I wouldn't do it. The woman who is deaf made an excellent point. Where does she fit in? And what about people who rp? I don't care what sort of rules individuals make for their own private entertainment. Voice chat interviews? I don't care. Personally, I'm not the least bit interested in a guild that makes those sorts of demands but that's me. Just don't act surprised that people don't agree with you. The fact that your main motivation seems to be that you don't want to be fooled by gay people suggests you have some kind of serious issues. It's good you're seeing to them. Hope you get better soon. Until then, you will continue to sort of creep me out.
Clans that do not use voice software are not even worth to consider, for various reasons: You'll always do better if you can coordinate your movements through voice than with text chat. I simply hate writing while playing my char, specially when fast action is involved. This is not a chat room, it's a game. Voice is much more personal and helps to avoid misunderstandings. Voice helps to give strength to the bound between all your clan members and create a real friendship faster.
Really, from my point of view only the unsocial people or the people with something to hide are unwilling to use voice software, and you do not want those in your clan anyway.
About interviews you should be aware that most clans with some objectives, be them pvp or raiding, have some requirements. You cannot come out from nowhere and hope to take advantage from them.
This is a stupid idea/rule. I've had my microphones broken a few times during last couple of years, I would've hated it if that prevented me from getting accepted into the guild I wanted to join at the time. If anything, they should atleast be able to listen to vent but having to interview someone is silly.

Thats funny
But his wasnt stereotype. It was an individual one time experience. But yours was still win.
Well first off if your raid wipes cuz you didn't use Vent then your players, quite frankly, really suck. Back in the Ol' Days of EQ1 we did a 12 group raid of the Manaetic Behemoth (probably misspelled oh well), without any form of voice chat. A 25 man raid of Illidan? Cake walk by comparison. Oh and if you didn't play EQ1 then you have no idea what insane raids and raid mobs are like.
As for the "I want to know who is a girl"... umm.. are you that dense? I don't care if the girl begging for money is really the hottest girl on the entire planet, go earn your coin like the rest of us did!
Plus I don't understand the "selfish to stare at chat logs". You're already staring at combat logs, but that's ok?
From my experience voice chat can be useful in small groups, but in raids it becomes a complete mess. You can have 40 different people all talking at once, some moron blaring his crappy music and I even heard a dude flushing the toilet once! Ewww, I do NOT want to know the priest was taking a dump while healing me! Also, by typing in chat you can clearly see who said what. That will not always be the case if someone talks you may ask "uh who is the british sounding guy again?".
Besides for some reason voice chat and games don't always get along on my PC. When I played WoW I could hear on Vent but couldn't talk. IRQ conflict I guess but was never able to get it to work, usually when I duoed with a friend of mine we just used MSN Messenger voice chat since that worked.
I joined this guild just because of this. My other wow guilds im tryin to talk into requiring it as well. I think it's a really good idea. I want to know who is really a guy or a girl and who is faking being a girl. Plus by asking just a few simple questions you can learn a lot about their maturity and how serious the person is toward helping the guild or if they are just joining for free phat lewt. I think using voice chat is a must nowadays in mmorpgs, if you're a serious gamer.
What is really funny--- I asked my LOTRO guild leader to begin voice interviewing players interested in joining our guild. I figured that LOTRO even has voice chat built in game so it might be a good idea. Everyone in my guild was totally against it though, and thought i was being really weird to the point they all got angry at me. It was weird cause almost everyone in the guild uses voice chat.
I like voice chat. I think that it is way waaay better then having to type all the crap and read the chat box all the time. The advantages to using voice is so much compared to not using it for raids and pvp.
I think players who are so dead against using it to the point where it actually offends them need to get with the times. I think in many cases players who refuse to JUST TURN ON voice chat( just to listen)are so so selfish, especially when it's a feature that is built into the game.
What's the big deal? Why is it so hard for some people just to talk?
My guild had no problem raiding in EQ, long before they even invented voice chat in any mmo...As a matter of fact the only thing my guildies do in voice chat is make fun of each other while we raid...So voice chat inst a big thing, theres a reason why Guild Leaders have applications ONLINE where they fill out to see if its a guild for them...Tha's all you really need to do to get to know people...You join a raiding because you want high end content and you have to know how to play your class, what other information do you need from someone?
I wouldnt join a guild if I needed to do a vent interview...I play games to escape reality, relax, and have fun. I can do job interviews in my real life. If games start to cross over too much into this type of stuff I wont play em.
WoW: Asian bot game with American and European children.
The children are bad enough in the chat channels, now these kids want us to deal with them on Vent?
I am sooooo happy I quit this game. When I quit EQ 1, and have returned repeatedly, I felt I was missing something. When I quit WoW, I felt a sense of freedom and relief. The game like eats you up.

Some people take MMOs a little bit too seriously. It's just a game, there shouldn't be interviews for guilds...that's ridiculous. If a person is good, you keep them, if they're bad, you kick them. Simple. If voice comm is making or breaking your raids you either have a terrible guild or the raid encounter is too difficult.

LOL and that my friends is why so many guilds fail.
Everyone thinks they're uberleet and end up getting knocked off their high horse. I'm not a carebear or anything, i've been in plenty of skillful guilds but when you dislike 90% of the guild and only stay because they're good. It makes the game boring and you'll end up quiting or rerolling. If you can get a bunch of friendly people that have some skill and put their fair share into the guild, that's when you will have fun and enjoy yourself. Not by kicking anyone who sucks (in your opinion).
