Yes, well no one minds a lot of free content, even the hardcore (basically meaning "jobless") gamer people don't, I guess. :)

First of all, book 9 and 10 should probably have been included at launch. How many LOTRO players quit back in May-June due to boredom?? When this game went live, It was geared towards the casual family type of gamers. Powergamers such as myself are used to their MMO's being loaded with Content and features that will keep us entertained for months until new content needs to be added.
To me, LOTRO seems like a MMO designed to make ONLY the casual gamer happy. This game is great If you have a son/daughter around 8-14 years old you'd like to play with for a couple hours a day. It is definitely not nearly on scale with true hardcore powergaming  MMO's like EQ, EQ2, DAOC, WoW, VG, etc.
I played LOTRO for about 6 hours before realizing this is definitely not the MMO for me. During my 6 hours of play time, I didn't die once. My Burglar only reached level 13, but I knew I could not advance my character any longer due to the boring el simpo EZ mode this game portrayed.
Now, the reason the game has a high rating is because of how incredibly easy and laid back LOTRO is. The abilities and controls  are very easy to learn. The quest story mode is pretty neat, but it seems like your playing a structured RPG and not a true MMORPG.
For hardcore powergamers like myself, we need something a bit more challenging and in depth, a game that truly makes you feel a part of the world your playing in. Games like AoC, WAR, and Gods & Heroes are on my highly anticipated list.. I know for a fact these 3 games will appeal to more true MMO gamers than everything LOTRO has to offer.
Most true hardcore MMO gamers who tried LOTRO quit due to boredom. These gamers are probably the reason Turbine had to work double shifts just to release book 9 and 10 within 4 months. It definitely was NOT intended to make you casual nub gamers happy. Turbine stated that LOTRO is NOT meant to be a hardcore MMO, but here they are doing what they can to keep its playerbase in tact which means, releasing more content to make their hardcore subscribers happy.
So those of you nub casual gamers who want to gloat and brag about how great Turbine is for releasing 2 major content patches, please save it. Your failing to see the real picture here. Most MMO's that are released usually has A TON more content at launch than what LOTRO had available. So If you ask me, this game was released to early due to pretty much NO end game whatsoever until more than a month after it was released. Book 9 and 10 should NOT be considered as two free  major content updates simply because it should have been in the game at launch!

Pro hardcore powergamer, pro hardcore powergamer,... these are the words you say to yourself everyday I guess!

But it's far from true if you consider WoW to be made for pro hardcore powergamers and that you expect Warhammer to be pro hardcore powergaming and calling Lotro is just another noob game. Then you are a little wannabe.

Your reason why Lotro is such a noob game is that you didnt die up to level 13. Now come on, if you died in WoW up to level 13, how dare you call yourself pro hardcore true powergamer 2007.

I had to buy the original game and a computer to play it on also , those bastards LOL.

I find it Funny as hell that  the same people pissing and moaning about this are probably forking over 30 bucks a month to SOE for the Station Pass which is nothing more than one half ass dying game and several shitty ones that are pretty much dead.

    I miss DAoC

PVE games are not hardcore. Open pvp with permadeath or severe consequences and full looting are. You confusing Time-sink with hardcore. If no one can kill you and take all your gears that you spent a year getting..its just a game that makes you wait..not hardcore. You are not hardcore..you have alot of free time that you spend killing npc's that are scripted to let you kill it. Never have I heard eq2 or wow or daoc called hard core games. EQ is a timesink..nothing hard about waiting..VG is the most solo friendly game out there..where, again, you kill things that are meant to die. The hardest thing done in these games is group ganking npc's. Thats like you and your friends beating up a shrub in your back yard...and yelling "straight outta comptom bitch" at it like  youre a no good thug. The only games close to hard core are eve and uo..which you didnt even mention. Anything else you bring with your hardcore self?

Powergamer isnt a title of respect either...all it means is you spend alot of time playing a game. Ask any girl if you dont believe me..see if they think its hot.

    lmao!

I think that rates as quotable.

Except in his case, it'd be "I'm a hardcore powergamer, bitch! A hardcore powergamer! You hear? Hardcore! Powergamer!.... Hardcore!! Hard. Core!! Power. Gamer!!.... Hardcore!!!"

Seriously... maybe we shouldn't be so harsh on the guy... I'm thinking maybe that post was some kind of therapy for him.

You know... like those people who put thing like "I'm a good person" anywhere they can in plain sight to boost their self-confidence? Kinda like that.

30 or 45 bucks for a new postage stamp size zone and a few more gray quests is not free, nor a good value.

I didnt play Lotro beta. I bought the game on release. Installed it, and made it to 50 within 2 weeks as well as the 1st mastered weaponsmith. I also quested to reach lvl 50 the whole way. I was one of the 1st people to beat Helg and Mord.

Having said that, the game is extremely easy. The only "depth" to it is from what the individual who plays the toon makes. The game actually has none. Its a casual " only got a couple hours a day" game. Which is fine if thats what you enjoy. My sub lasted till the raid was released, where we beat it in the 1st night and i cancled right after.

I am chomping at the bits for a game that has some real depth to it. This one wasnt it.

Eve gives all their expansions for free.

I will have to second this! EQ2 gives out MAJOR free content...and if you even consider that if you're a Station Access subscriber, you get all THREE Adventure Packs as FREE content! Now that's a TON of free content that even after the LotRO updates upcoming won't come close to! Just thought I'd point this out.

    :)

And yes, I tried LotRO, and well found it lacking...for lack of a better word to choose. Good game but lacking alot. Maybe I'll check it out a year from now when it's hopefully caught up with some other MMOs in amount of content etc... BUT, I won't be giving up my EQ2 instead.

SOE gave me EQ2 ,  adventure packs and three expansions for free along with three months of service . That seems like plenty of free content . Considering I only played vanguard for a month :

That's cause they want you to get there SOE get ripped off subscription plan.

Plus no one really plays EQ2 anymore it's a dying game.

  • zevianzevian Member UncommonPosts: 403

Turbine isn't the only one who provided a bunch of free content to their subs ( things that should of been included in release)

Warcraft did the same thing, battlegrounds dungeons raids all were free up to the first expansion pack, which their doing again.  Voice chat dungeons raids.

Its pretty commonplace matter of factly

But its good to see turbine is taking care of their game.

    dee deedee

    durrrrrr

thats about all i am hearing.

you do realize all the games you pod people spout off all started with low content, yes even eq and wow.

so please, get off the horse.

SOE giving away something that doesn't sell anymore isn't hardly "free", but I guess you could look at it that way.

Eitherway, putting SOE and Turbine in the same catagory of free content is laughable at best.  Turbine has a history of free updates with storylines and such dating back to AC1 and continuing today.  SOE has a history of nickle and diming their clients to death with buggy unfinished content until what, last month? when they finally gave a free zone away.  Whoopdy doo!

Kudos to turbine for continuing that trend.  I wonder if they have enough creative license to run live events?

  • roundheadroundhead Member Posts: 48

In a subscription-based game, I would hardly describe content updates as "free".  You're paying for it, but in small regular amounts instead of one big, discernable lump.  And you have no choice of whether you want to pay for it or not either.

But overall that's a minor quibble.

Player housing in Book 11, eh?  I just hope they don't do it like they did in Asheron's Call.  That world was HUGE and the player population relatively small, and yet the world ended up feeling absolutely full of houses.  It was even worse because as an exploration-type game, nothing breaks the feeling of true exploration-immersion as coming across a settled neighborhood!

"Now I am trekking through the untamed wilds of the Amazon.  Look at that snake!  And these ruins--have human eyes seen these in hundreds of years?  And over there is...7-11?"

Id rather see more lands to explore then player housing.

Want a game with alot of depth and that, I can guarantee you, you will not run out of things to do - even after getting your 5th or 6th job to level cap (75)?

Try Final Fantasy XI. It's about as opposite of casual friendly as you can get - and I don't mean that in a bad way; I love the game (LoTRO makes a great counterpart to it, I think).

Seriously... There are people who have been playing that game since US launch (over 4 years ago now) and *still* haven't seen or done everything. Go to ffxiclopedia.org and do some research - check out things like Limbus, Dynamis, Salvage, etc... I think you'll find something to keep you busy for quite some time in that game.

That said, you're right... LoTRO is geared toward people who play much more casually. I think for what it is, it's a very good game with alot to offer as time goes on and they continue to build out the rest of Middle Earth. I think Turbine have done a great job.
