Yup and marketing people tend to be a bit shady and not so bright sometimes. The actual game devs more than likely had nothing to do with the  marketing statements.

don't forget trial accounts.. haha id like to see what they would have if they said  "active paying accounts" instead

It means no MMOs report their actual subscriber numbers. Blizzard reports milestones like 8million, 9million, etc. but other than that, no one reports accurate monthly numbers for subscribers.

So, Turbine made up a way to throw a big number into their advertisement -- 4 million characters.  Just like with WoW, each million subscribers would be a milestone Turbine will happily announce when they reach it, but obviously they haven't quite yet.

Blizzard does say Active Accounts in their announcements.

    Turbine just said Characters.

Who cares how they came up with it.. it's called Marketing.  The game is quite popular and doing very well..

If you want to take a good look at population amounts... maybe look at SOE and the games you're playing.  Those would be some interesting numbers.

Agreed. The game is doing great, and it has won awards (Take a look at the website) and Gotten great reviews (Take a look at the website.) It's a marketing thing. 5 Alts per server. Do the math.

I must say myself the game is pretty good and the fact it has 4 million accounts.  But you can't tell if its the truth or not, Some of the accounts could not be even used.  Meh but you must lie so the game looks interesting and that people would buy it.....

Im not trying to sound gay but man 4 million accounts....

wow, talk about false advertisement. both Lineage and Lineage 2 kick Lotro's ass when it comes to size in subscriber/playerbase.

    OMG... seriously people...

Quit judging a game based upon how many subscribers it may or may not have.  Quit trying to justify your purchasing decision by pointing to the masses and saying "look... I'm so right!... everybody else is playing it too!..."  It doesn't make you right.  It makes you another follower who doesn't trust themselves enough to make an informed argument about a game's true merits.  It makes you a lemming.

For what it's worth I happen to play 2 games actively at the moment (LOTRO and EVE) although I've played at least a half-dozen others over the years.  And the only thing that I care about is whether or not the game is fun for me... those two games are probalby opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of gameplay mechanics and complexity level, but for whatever reason they both suit my tastes just dandy. As a counterpoint, WoW has a bazilliaon kajillion subscribers, but I lost interest in it by level 30.  So which one is better?  Better for me?  Better for you?

I'm not here to bash LOTRO (why would I?  I like the game and play it actively), nor am I here to defend LOTRO.  I'm here to say "trust your own judgement and to hell with what other people, or subscription numbers, or marketing people have to say".

Well i guess the bots in L2 would yeah but Bots are not playerbase now are they and so what if poeple can have 10 Alts it does not mean that every player has 10 alts and besides that fact last time i logged in  i seen that you could only have five alts? even so if every player had 5 alts that is 800k subs which not every player has 5 alts me included  i have 2 atm and when i am bored and if i get bored with them maybe i will try another  so 800k is a good number imo but i am sure there is more than 800k but i could really care less if there was cause it is at a comfortable level now and i hope it stays that way.

4 Million Charactors, That could be be manipulated either way. I mean, 5 slots per account, trial or otherwise..No one one knows I guess, but I seriously doubt better than 400,000 players (trial, buddy, otherwise) at its peak. And does this include all charactors ever made since release? The ones collecting dust for the past 5 months?

Even if my wild speculation is high by 100 grand or so worldwide, still a great success by today's standards.

  • cupertinocupertino Member Posts: 1,094

If the subscriber numbers were in anyway impressive they would tell us those, instead they give us characters, I have about 15 WoW characters but I am only counted once in Blizzard numbers.

Not taking anything away from LoTRO its a fine game.. but come on turbin/CM dont think we are idiots.

I suspect they are counting charcaters ever created as in inactive accounts, and maybe even beta accounts? and most certainly Trial accounts.

  • CacolacoCacolaco Member UncommonPosts: 99

At 5 character's per account, if all of them were filled by every player, there would have to be at least 800,000 players to accomplish that.  Seeing as how it isn't likely that everyone filled all their character slots, the total number of players since launch is actually probably more than 800,000.  Obviously some people have canceled their accounts, and many may have been trial accounts, but I would imagine that 4 million characters implies that there have been over a million accounts.

I suppose deleted characters count also, so I guess that factors in.  In any case, I don't play, I just noticed that 400,000 seemed a bit low.

I'm just waiting for a F2P overhyped sandbox WoW clone with full PVP, epic raid bosses, instanced group content, and Crysis-quality graphics to come out. That, or something fun.

When a company has to release character numbers instead of subscriber numbers you can smell the BS coming. Second largest MMO? If you exclude second life, lineage, lineage II... If their numbers are below 300K then they are fighting a couple others as well. Turbine made one good MMO and has been shoveling crap ever since. Time they cowboy up and release AC again with a 2nd gen engine.

Also the numbers being thrown out are ignoring trial accounts, characters on multiple servers (IE. more the 5 characters), and canceled accounts. I could believe 400K which is respectable... but they are no where near 800K subscribers.

No question that 4 million characters should be divided by 10. And even than we will have only estimate.

But 8 million active subscription of blizzard includes ALL and EVERY account EVER CREATED - Including trial, gold seller, bot, and people that do not play for year or two ...

Actually they defined it as paying customers. So that would discount any inactive accounts, banned accounts, trial accounts... etc. Don't get me wrong I dislike WoW... but they have been very specific on what their numbers represent.

yep, well, if you only take alts from the same server, it's 6 (max number). but then on more. servers.....

myself I have 6 simply for reserving the names I want. and on two other server some chars for the same reason. and i am not even hardcore.... so your 10 is not so far off I would say, which would correspond to 400k subscribers, which again seems reasonable.

quite a shame considering the name behind the game - scary considering what might happen to WAR, AoC, etc.

STO stated themselves they will go the safe way and do a "WoW-style" game. Great, what will that mean? Certainly not 1 million subscribers, that's for sure.....

    Sigh.

    QFT! Exactly my thoughts!

When I started playing WOW, I could have not cared less about how many ppl were already playing it. I bought a PC Gamer with a free week trial. I tried it and I liked it. Played if for a year, because I myself have found out that it's a nice game.

I am playing LOTRO because I stumbled into a beta giveaway in February. I liked it. Now I am a founder. Nobody, no marketing, no website, no shill/forum poster could have convinced me to buy. I played it myself and found out that it works nice FOR ME.

People should be much much more secure in themselves.

For some this might be true, but for some it isn't. One of the things that can really destroy an MMO is... a lack of players on your server to play with. Some play solo all the way, but some people actually like to group, and that's hard in an MMO that is empty. So yeah, some players like to know how many are playing before they buy the game.
