In full open PvP (FFA) you don't get to choose your own style. If I choose PvE someone else can choose PvP and FORCE me into PvP with them.

Darfall has major competition and many of the clans including mine have moved on to Mortal Online. I will give AOC a miss and play WAR until Mortal comes out. At last a game which doesnt cater to care bears.
And I prefer to play AoC until mortal comes out then give that a go. But if you think War is any less catering than AoC is then think again. But I also know that MO wont be out 2009 just as DF wont. until then AoC caters for long term appeal for me and way past that point.

Mortal Online or DF are still in the paper and pencil design stage. During that stage, the designer puts down every wish he can dream of. When it comes down to production the engineer will replace the fancy ideas with some realistic implementation, based on technology and costs. That is the normal cycle of designer engineer wrestling.
As Avery put it so well, its more realistic to look at games currently available and choose. I am not going to forego gaming now and wait b/c some designers tell us about their ultimate dreams. I do not know if I will live long enough to see the next generation games. There is no harm playing the best game today in the market as we hope for the next breakthru. After all I am not going to marry AoC or anything, I will ditch it the day I find the next game vastly superior.

I agree with Aion and disagree with Lineage remark it is amazing how so many ppl ride it off as another asian grind when it has been clearly stated on many occasions that it wont be but any way no point feeding these people as much as i would like to see AoC succeed i think it will dissapoint more then it will impress it is heading right along the lines of Vanguard ok it may be a lil bit more polished but unless you computer can handle the game so many ppl will be dissapointed as they wont be able to play it thus leaving a low Sub base to start with till ppl can catch up with the game and i dont think that it is a bad think to make games this way it just means the game wont be an instant success.

I hope you are not mistaken, because then we both will be having a lot of fun! I have not been following this game. But I have to suggest you take a more realistic approach to your expectations. You have not seen much of the game, and there is the big element of community. If the people you play with suck, so will the game (multi player types). I know I usually enjoy the first moments in a lot of games I play. Hopefully this games proves to have enough of that enjoyment to keep people playing beyond the start. AoC is the next great 'alternative to the generic cloned crap' MMOG out there. Like SWG was, AO was, and Eve is.
Which is pretty sad, is it not? AoC is going to be a good game, I have faith. But even that is not good news. Why don't we have a few very nice general titles and a lot of competitive variants to choose from?
I want a couple great orc vs dwarf games, a battletech/mech game, a flight sim game, a realistic historical based war game, a fps, some combos and more. Original ideas, games with variety.

That is why I am not a favourite of free trials/fully open betas. Free trials brings in all the freeriders, and a sizable portion of them never intend to pay for the game, so they are in no mood to help beta, to shoot bugs, or to build a good community. They come in to ravage the game, exploit the free duration, and exact as much personal distress as they can levy and move on. They practically ransack the game and move on.
Once the game start charging, most of these will go. Hopefully what is left are the better community, if they are not already driven off. Personally I would rather play a game with a modest community that is mature and loving, like the LOTRo community, than participate in a game in which everyone is for himself.
Just a heads up Aion is not going to be another Lineage. It's a complete WoW clone mixed with some Lineage features and wings. The UI, the gameplay, the questing, and everything is a complete WoW ripoff. Check the forum for Korean beta information since there is no American NDA yet...

no way of knowing. I'm REALLY hoping it will end up like LOTRO, in that it's so much fun that there's really no grind at all.
