Cuz this is where the real mmo players hang out!

    E-sport kids hang out elsewhere.

I remember having a conversation with a WoW player that went something like this.

Me - "I really thought SWG pre-cu was the best made mmo ever. To me WoW is ok for a month just like   Mcdonalds is ok for a quick fix"

WOWPLAYER - "LOL how can you say that?  WoW is the best MMO eva!"

Me - "What other MMO's have you played before?"

WOWPLAYER - " errr... Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, Counter Strike..."

    Thats a true story.

Oh Yay! yet ANOTHER elitest snob who's delusion and ego has made their heads grow so damn big they actually think they are THE authority on MMO's lol! Take a reality pill pal, stereotyping all WoW players the way you just did only shows your arrogance and your ignorance, oh, and so you know, I've played a number of MMO's myself, all the way back to UO (UO, EQ, EQ2, CoH/CoV, SWG, DnD, LOTRO, DAoC, WoW, FFXI, GW and a few that escape me at the moment), and sorry, but a lot of them (the ones that I played anyway) are crap now. The only one that HAD potential was SWG during the Pre CU, but even then, it still didn't compare, why? Because SOE didn't bother to do their jobs and fix the damn game.

Oh, FYI, you're not the authority on MMO's, so take a reality pill, and you making stupid generalizations about an MMO's demographics only shows how ignorant/intolerant you are.

This one is real fun: "ignorant/intolerant", cause the stereotypes wandering about out there always wander under this logo ready to use on anyone who has a different opinion than their average self. Reminds me of a colleague who told me that I had predjuges towards him asking him to take down his leggs from the desk at work. How it made me feel intolerant/ignorant.

Anyhow all this controvercy around a seemingly straight forward and immensly popular game like WoW I think is typical for any large success. It has to be in the middle of the road somewhere. One is for sure, Blizzard gain a lot of money on their game, which make them more able to make a good and flawless game and therefore WoW has an unquestionable advantage on that part of the quality aspect. Well I have jet to play it myself.

I play VG now and come from WOW. I did enjoy WOW at the beggining and put in a lot of time. WOW is a first step for new MMORPGers to learn and understand then move on. As a whole though it is nothing more then a stepping stone to real MMO's.

I know the rating's were done a while ago, but if they re-reviewed it I think it would be even worse. Blizz has made WOW so easy in the last few patches its dumb. You can really tell they are trying there best to get new people to 70 for the expansion.

I personally had to leave wow because I seriously thought I was playing with 5 year olds. Every day it gets worse and worse. If you think EQ2/VG has Elitest you need to play at 70 in WOW. People have two attitudes, either they think your 5 years old or they are 5 years old.

Ok I'll put in on this one I guess.  Here's MY impression of WOW.  Grind, grind, grind, instance, grind, oh look some epic armor! wonder when I can wear it? Grind, some friends power level you , grind grind grind, oh level 70!!  Now I will look down on everyone else, the end.

Tell me about any MMO that does not involve grinding of some sort. I don't think that is a valid point. Anyway, at least your having fun while grinding in wow. Endless streams of quests, items and lore.

Fun while grinding, um no... After playing VG I can say that there is no fun in grinding in WOW. In VG if I dont want to quest I can go do some crafting. WOW's version of crafting is getting two items type in 20 hit the button then go get a beer.

Like Vanguards systme is any good. The constant clicking and button pressing to make a class A item almost drove me insane. It's soooo repetitive.

Crafting seems to suck in every MMO.

I like the simple crafting system in wow. A complex system does not make it any more fun, in my oppinion. I've tried the system in EQ2 for instance, and even though it's more detailed and you can create items of different qualities etc I still found wow more fun and rewarding.

I would tell you about GW.

If your playing PvE in GW then your still killing monsters to gain experience. If you repeat this over and over it's called grinding.

From what I can see is that theres two different types of players. Casual and hardcores. Both are going to have different views. Granted what I can see though is most Casual players slowely turn into hardcores and want more. When they did the rankings they looked at games in a hardcore sence, looking at all aspect of the game.

The difference with GW is that you kill monsters on your way doing quests, not for gaining experince, but for them not to kill you, that's called hunting. I totally agree on your definition of grinding, but I think it doesn't apply to GW. But we are actually talking about WoW in this thread so I guess we are a bit off topic.

Well, there are many situations in wow where the side-effect of completing a quest is killing a lot of monsters. So I really don't see a difference. If you mean killing monsters solely for gaining experience then I at least do that very rarely in wow. You get more experience from completing quests.

WoW is just the most commercialized in the real world, therefore newbies who know what a life is get to it.

I bet you 9/10 of the people playing WoW don't know what the hell an MMORPG is.

    1. the results are based on more than just popularity (like many things in life)

    2. the results are based on votes of people on this site (who have tried many other games)

someone above me made the comment that many WoW players don't even know what an MMO is.  they just find that one fun and never (and i mean never) look at any other MMO.  people here are exposed to every MMO out there.

    3. being the biggest does not automatically make you the best

    4. the list is always skewed when a new release comes out

    5.  the one you see on the main page is basically the admins of this site and their views.  it is a good list but again its their list and not everyone will agree.

WoW is a good game don't get me wrong, but it is not one of the best around.

SWG-------------------------Guild wars-----------WoW---------------------(insert really good MMO that you like)

i did not put an MMO into that last slot as i know many would flame me for it

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Thats cool. I don't say that WOW is or isn't for everyone.  In fact thats why there are so many games out there.  Its just that the hype that goes along with WOW is annoying.  I liked Shadowbane for the fact you got to build a civilization.  Back in my days of runescape you could do any and all skills.  WOW you pick 2 professions and thats it.  I like a variety in my games and crafting to me shouldnt be easy, its something you should have to be good at, not just point and click on 2 objects to join them. And your right, most games are grind and grind some more, that's why we have to demand better games, especially when you drop $15 bucks a month to play.  And, one last thought.  Would Starcraft be successful as a mmo?
