And you know this... how?  I am sure you have some links with info to prove it.  Unless you have info we don't.

I think Polar and others present some logic doubts that makes me think they didn't restart things.  This project started in 2001, at least that was the public kick off.

Now, what's the importance if the game had been in development for 5 or 7 years?  We know they small company.  We know they are really bad in giving us information of the status of the project... hell!   They had been in beta (according to them) since the last 5 years!!!  And personally their mistake is using the word beta too easily and hinting beta coming before they are really sure.

I had been following the game since almost day one... I didnt even have broad band... I had a 64 modem that connect to around 32k the best days!!!  LOL  I played UO with a modem!!!!!!!  hehe  Time pass fast and I get older :(

Imho, this project had been on going since at least 7 years but 5 or 7 years are irrelevant.  Saying they restarted the project, when even Aventurine didn't say it, its just an example of the blinded faith some people are having with this game.  And I learnt long ago not to discuss faith.  If some people want to believe 5 or 7 or more or less... go ahead.  I believe 7 hehe

If they release, we will see soon what DF really is.

     LoL!!!.

Polarization must be the nemesis of signusm/aventurine/tassos :p I would have never expected Polar, to find proof that they have started with this, 13 years back

All I was thinking was something like 10 years at worst, but this is beyond imagination... This is why its graphics are so old and outdates, and its concept a lot out of fashion these days.  good work

  • GaladournGaladourn Member RarePosts: 1,813

Don't be deliberately naive; what the merger did was give them the chance to develop a new 3D engine (as can be seen from the improvement in screenshots of later years).

They would never restart the entire project...

    Kind of difficult considering the game has only been in development for 5 years...check your facts { Mod Edit }

Wow I didn't know that SignusM Knew so little about the game he's been rabidly defending. Wonder what else he doesn't know and is wrong about.

WoW's graphics are now starting to show. And this is with a team like Blizzard. I'm sure DF is going to have a lot of outdated areas.

World of Warcraft graphics completely destroy Darkfalls as they are. There is no comparison. It's like comparaing a master painters work to some lacky who cleans his brushes.

I doubt they wil come up with anything in August. What we will get instead is the bleating of the few remaining sheep who havent been "sheared" by the myriad of lies perpetuated by DF.

Keep shootin the fireworks Signus, eventually after you get burned enough, you'll stop, just like the rest of us.

ok, but from where did idea of releasing 2008 came?

    Edit:

    Just found it

*On May 9, 2008, a WarCry developer journal stated that "... launch date will be inside 2008, with the public beta preceding it by a few weeks. This is official and internally we're a lot more specific, but pending an announcement, we cannot say more at this time."

What would happen if they don't show anything more than the previous video's, maybe even use some of the same material.

Some would go 'you see, vaporware', others would go 'but they DID deliver a new video',

more importantly, Adventurine would go 'god, internets people are so stupid, this was easy!'.

  • QarkQark Member Posts: 234

why would they sign contract with publishing company, and company in its statement say "for distributon of game"

it's pretty clear we'll be seeing decent coverage of sieges and city-building stuff, the question is how much will we see of other stuff? like everyone else i hope they will make this a proper marketing video and include a wide variety of stuff.

They have not signed any publisher that I'm aware of. They have not signed a contract with a distributer, that anyone is aware of. They have signed a MoU (otherwise known as an "agreement").

The conspiracy theorists say it's a complete scam for plublicity; for Tasos, et. al. to land better jobs; or to recieve funding for nothing.

I'm fairly certain the game exists, but due to an ageing engine, graphics, etc., they have stopped and revamped portions several times over the years. Whether they have been able to keep up with technology and write content for the game, we will find out when and if the game ever releases.

I think we will see a video around October 1st, that will underwhelm all, and not be thorough in the least (with a vague statement to the effect that "we could not show a comprehensive video, since it would simply be too large. But the game will be out real soon!"). Sometime in October, they'll begin the selection process (i.e. asking for applications on the forums) for public beta, but won't actually start it until at least early November (again, the scope of the game will underwhelm all, but Tasos will state "the beta is limited to those areas that require testing in addition to our rigorous internal testing").

They will string along with vague promises of giving an exact release date up until late November/early December. Then they will admit they can not release this year ("beta testing taking longer than expected... Balancing skills and characters hard... Making huge improvements...."). they will slowly shrink the number of  beta players ("focusing our attention"), as the money runs out, sometime in January/February. They will try to "partner" with a publisher, then "license" the game, then sell out.

If they can find a publisher... well, when it releases would then depend on the publisher, and whether the game is remotely fit at that point. If I were to bet, I'd say they do manage to find a buyer, who then revamps the game as a in-browser game, and releases around August 09, as a competitor of Runescape.

was somewhat amusing until the last couple of paragraphs where it got a bit ridiculous.

first, game engines do not age that badly, textures and models do though. for example, AoC, which everyone acknowledges has great graphics, is primarily based on the AO engine that was written before 2000. they've been revamping their textures and some of their models over the years, not the engine per se.

i predict they'll announce beta sometime in august, but it won't start until early september. i strongly strongly doubt they will run out of money and rush it out the door. i just can't see it happening.

Here's what we'd all like to see:

If video of a finished-looking game IS NOT released this month or it's just a rehash of old video clips, the fanboys need to stop defending this game.

If a video of a finished-looking game IS released this month without being a rehash of old video clips, the haters need to stop dogging this game.

    Prediction:

Tasos will provide some lame excuse as to why the video can't be released this month but will nevertheless make new claims that the game is almost ready for release and should be available by year's end. Fanboys will lap it up and cheer. Haters will be more convinced than ever. Forum wars will continue. Avertine will file for bankruptcy in December.

Strictly speaking, true. However, game engines are often revamped to deal with promised features. Not only do features, UI, animations, etc. change to match other games (and market expectations),  but updated (or new) existing OpenSource libraries, changes to programming APIs (it's been fairly well established they're using Java), security needs, and changes to graphic cards and OS's. Even changes in networking protocols. In the development of Darkfall, Windows 98 has fallen from favor, Windows ME came and crashed, Windows 2000 has come and gone, and Windows Vista now has more than two users.

To claim their engine has not been revamped to some extent would be ludicrious. The only question would be whether they "rewrote" it. But whether the changes have been incrimental or all at once (or twice), doesn't really matter. But major reworks would account for the game's repeated failures to release.

oh yeah i am sure they've been adding enhancements to their engine the whole time, as new version of DirectX have come out, as well as just generally. I would doubt they've rewritten it wholly, but then again 3d game engines aren't really that big, typically well less than a few hundred thousand lines of code.

regarding java, no, their client is 100% C++, and their server is a mixture of C++ and java. their world editor tools appear to be written in java from the old screenshots, which show a Java/Swing Frame and the Java mascot icon if you look carefully.

i don't think the release failures are due at all to graphics per se, i think it's more likely they were due -- more than anything -- to being too open about their plans to the public and just straight-out naivety about how long the game would really take. maybe the 2006 near-release was due to financial pressures, only they know, the 2003/4 near release i am certain was due to them forming Aventurine and making a serious decision to significantly expand the scope of the game.

I really do think this is the real thing this time though, all the circumstantial evidence is there, from the graphics touchups, to the distributor deal, to the explicit announcement of a release-by date.

an amusing snippet from that IRC i linked above:

<stratos> Claus|Dev: what year in development is DF in now?

    <@Claus|Dev>; god dont ask

<@Claus|Dev>; it has taken way too long, thats for sure. But the good news is the game

    will rock

What's the source of the client being 100% C++? I don't see it in the IRC chat.
