that video wasnt so bad...dunno what do you expect?
I expect a game with actual quality low poly modelling and proper art direction , proper animations , etc like what Blizzard does.. of course I know that's asking a bit much from amateurs..
I gurantee you that WoW's modelling is much lower in poly than anything in Darkfall and yet it still looks 100x better..
Well I guess you're right. You can't blame tools and technology for horrible modelling and texture work of developers.. so their engine is not to blame.

Are you high? WoW's graphics suck balls. They just keep retexturing old models and serve it as "exclusive content" and reuse old animations for the new skills. Not to talk about the horrible clipping which they haven't fixed in 4 years, and the direction in which their "art" is moving is horrific. S4 makes me wanna puke and so does the whole BC expansion. Two-three months ago they made human females look like junkies, turned taurens' weapons into toothpicks and doubled the size of human female weapons cause apparently in Blizzard's art department all they do is jack at manga chicks with big eyes and swords all day long.

Blizzard have really top designers, alltho graphic is cartoonish and "sux" by some people, designers did really great job making it shine. From every aspect design of WoW is great.
Allso, remember that cartoonish graphic made game playable on every PC out there.
I started WoW on old Thinkpad laptop with 1.5 celeron, 128 MB ram and 16 MB ATI...it did stuck alot and i soon bought better PC but it was playable.
If you ask me i would rather have lousy graphics in game but smooth FPS...than 5 FPS crap we get from AOC.

The developers have been saying things will happen soon since August 2001, and very few of them actually did, but their community was willing to wait. And now after 8 years of saying things will happen soon, they are still saying things will happen soon, and so far very few of them actually have, but yet they still have a community willing to wait. If this routine has not changed in over 8 years I very much doubt it will in a month, simply all that will happen is the current members of the community who are no longer willing to wait will be replaced by new community members who are willing to wait. This process has continued for 8 years and I see no reason why it wont simply continue indefinitely, multiple official / unofficial beta and release dates have come and gone as well as numerous other “promises” over the last 8 years. And yet new community members, after 8 years of this, who replace those who are no longer willing to wait, are still willing wait for things to happen "soon" along with the allready existing community members who are still willing to wait. All it requires is ignorance , naiveté and faith to perpetuate the cycle. The only thing that can finally end this is for the things that have been perpetually about to happen soon for the last 8 years, like Beta, launch and new videos etc. to actually finally start happening "soon" i.e. in the next 5 months, or for Darkfall to be canceled. Otherwise, 2008 along with all the things that were going to happen soon will come and go, along with the current members of the community who are no longer willing to wait, and a new community members and those still willing to wait will be getting excited all over again about the same things that might be happening sometime soon in 2009.

Haven't done a great deal of research on the developers, but Ricki Sickenger (Lead Tools/ Game Logic) has a lot of Java experience, and very little C++ (from circumstantial Google data). Can't find much on Kjetil Helland (Lead 3D/Client Programmer), but he may have more of a management background.

"Displays stuff" and "takes user input" is a hell of a lot of the "gamepay". You could just as easily say, all the server genius is AI and some databases.
That said, a lot of MMORPG's have clients written in Java.
That's what I said... AI, and a database. And half of the network stuff, but most of that is already present in the OS or whatever. In reference to the original arguement, Ricki Sickenger is a "Lead Tools/Game Logic"... I think "input, network stack, graphics engine, sound & mixing libraries, UI widget libraries, etc" can safely be said to require "game logic" or be a "tool".
Google shows Wurm Online, Pokemon World and Runescape use a Java client. Whether a Java game is in a browser or not is irrelevant (same basic code, just affects portability and resources). These are all successful MMORPG's, which is more than Darkfall can say. I'd bet a fair number of the item mall games are Java, but are in-browser.
I'm assuming it's been stated it is not a browser game? Be funny if everyone assumed it isn't, and no one ever thought to actually ask.
dude the client is not in Java. the server *is* the game, where all the world geometry is, the physics, the AI, loot, etc - all the rules of the game are there. the client is basically just a fancy mp3 player with graphics that displays what it's told to by the server.
Funny that you love WOW so much you're here following Darkfall too.
DOUBLE ZING!!!!
now that's what i call pwned.
read my post history and find 1 positive post Ive ever done about WoW. I specifically dislike Darkfalls unbelievable number of pushed back dates. What are you on?
As far as the publisher I heard AV I think were in talks about it, but the deal hadnt been sealed.

First, we KNOW the server has some Java in it, and we know the client has some Java in it. Second, although we know there is some C++, we do not know the ratio, or the use of, the two. Third, you are trying to split some pretty fine hairs. Physics can be in the client, if the server has a check to prevent cheating. The "world" could also be in the client, again, with a check against cheating. Any instanced AI could be included in the client. ANY instanced content (some AI, loot, character physics, etc., can be included in the client, to remove load from the server.
For instance, you shoot an arrow at an enemy. If there is no one else around, your client determines the trajectory, and draws the arrow, and determines the damage. This data is sent to the server, which double checks (using a simple "pointing in the right direction" equation) that it was a hit, and that the damage is in the right ball park. If there are other people near enough to see it, the server tells them the position and character info (i.e. what weapon/arrow), and environmental data (if necessary, such as wind), and the client on that person's computer would render the arrow flight. When the creature dies, and you loot it, your client could determine what loot, and the server check that it is valid loot for that creature.
Although I'm sure most MMORPG's limit the power of the client to prevent cheating, I'm also sure they push as much computation to the client as possible. Considering the "fancy mp3 player with graphics" can be more than 10GB on some MMO's, I have to say the mp3 player is certainly fancy enough to qualify as a smattering of "game logic".
link me a reference that says there is Java in the client, because i don't know of one. if you're thinking of the in-game browser, that is most likely the open-source khttp renderer (used on konqueror and Safari browsers), which is C++.

none of that is right. all the physics, collision, loot, AI etc - ie: everything to do with the game - is determined by the server, otherwise it's too easy to packet sniff the netwrok traffic and reverse-engineer a client or mod that allows cheating.

the world geometry is on both client and server, and all the textures are of course already on the client. all the game decisions are handled by the server though the client may be allowed to do some interpolation (read: guesswork) to give the illusion of less network latency (ie: lag).

Do you even know how much it costs to build a professional grade server for a MMORPG?
It costs hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Why do you think Engines like Hero and Big World cost 1 million dollars to own a license to?
Now please someone tell me how Aventurine with their measly 20 or 30 amateurs can build a professional grade server and networking system capable of supporting 10,000 or even 3,000 people online at once... in a FPS style gameplay setup.
DARKFALL IS A JOKE PLAIN AND SIMPLE
it's never going to happen. EVER.
If Darkfall ever manages to get out of its fucken mythical hidden development behind closed doors phase and enter a public testing period , you will see one of the laggiest , most bug ridden pieces of shit around. Guranteed.
This project is such a fucken joke that I can't even begin to put into words how big of a joke it is. It's simply AMAZING that there's so many jackasses out there who would follow something that is obviously a complete piece of trash pipe dream.

Well now, hold your horses. Your not interested in this game but many other have a deep interest in Darkfall. And they do believe the game will be released 2008. Personally im 99,9% sure its gonna release this year. They secured a publisher and game is 100% feature complete.
Im gonna give you a little tip.
Since youre not interested in Darkfall and dont care if its released or not i suggest you move your e-peen to some other game that might interest you. Why bother writing walls of text on a game you have no interest in?
That's exactly what their so called 'publisher" is. Nothing more than a CD replication and distribution company. Because they couldn't find a real video game publisher for their "100% feature complete" amazing MMORPG.
Wake up. Darkfall is a complete failure. It's been a failure for years already. The only thing that has kept it afloat is the fact that no one has actually seen it because the devs hide it like a deformed child.
Wake up. Darkfall is a complete innovation. It's been revolutionising the way people think about PVP MMOs for years already. The only thing that has slowed down its release, despite the fact that several people who have actually seen it report how good it looked, is because the devs are obsessive about the game's quality and want the public beta to be relatively bug-free.
